As you guys probably know, HO intermodal stuff is quite expensive. One well car alone can cost $40 WITHOUT containers. Long story short, I found out from the June 2017 MRR magazine that in the August 1985 issue there is an article on how to scratchbuild a container loader. That would save me a good $29.99, because thats the market price I see for these. But I haven't been able to find the article online. Every place requires you to make a subscription or buy the magazine. Can somebody who has that magazine make scans of the article and post them here? Or is that illegal/a copyright infringement...
I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

You can try contacting customer service to see if they have any back issues of Aug '85 for sale. May cost you a few $$$ but it's cheaper than a year subscription and there would be no copyright issues.

There are also old issues for sale on Ebay for ~ $6.50 If you go that route, I have seen references to articles that were incorrectly referenced to the wrong date.

Well, I have that issue, and most every issue since about 1956, and I remember that article.
But unless you already have an extensive selection of styrene scratch building supplies, and a few other misc detail parts, it might be cheaper to just pay the $30. But I do see them several places for less......
It is going to take more than just a few dollars in materials........

Pages 95-101. THAT would be quite a build. It's not a detailed plan, just some drawings on how you could build it, going off of a brochure the author picked up.
That would be a big project for a well experienced scratch builder.

There are other versions of the Kalmar loaders that only handle containers.
Google Kalmar container cranes, and you will get lots of pictures, real and models.
That article just gives some basic drawings and pictures, a material list, and your on your own to figure it out. It doesn't start with any kind of loader or tractor as a base. You start from scratch.
I figured out the problem. I had to log out of my account for the button to show up, and when it did, the only way to access the offer was to sign in or make a MRR subscriber account. I only have the free one that allows you to post on the forums...
That is a pretty good price for that MSRP, but I just can bring myself to spend that much, even with the discount, on a little intermodal vehicle. For me, I value my money more than time, because I have more time to do DIY projects. For me, I model with the attitude of "why buy what you can make?"
At the risk of revealing just how old and outdated I really am ... many public libraries have subscriptions to, and back issues of, Model Railroader on the shelves.
While I applaud "why buy what you can make," making stuff means buying styrene and details parts and other resources, and to me information is just another resource. It isn't always free. Personally if I was so interested in intermodal that I'd be doing your particular project I think I'd get or already have Jeff Wilson's book or books on intermodal and work off the photos.

Thanks, thats a very good idea. I borrowed every single MRR publication I could find at my library, but maybe they have gotten more stuff since then. I'll have to check.
Well, I wish him luck building that loader. It's going to be a long haul.
For reference, what he's building is the LeTourneau Letro-Porter loader. It's the same loader that Frank (Zstripe) has as his avatar, as Frank used to operate one of these.

If anybody cares, posting a scan would most definitely be a copyright infringement. The law allows you to make copies for your own use, but specifically forbids distributing copies, even for free.
