Steven, while I don't know any of the particulars of this case, I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your efforts.
I belong to an architectural engineering forum which is un-moderated. After a steady stream from some members, unhappy with the present administration in Washington, making political comments on just about every forum topic, it has become almost unreadable. What's maddening is that the comments almost never have anything to do with the forum topics.
I appreciate this forum because it's one of the few where I can get information about my hobby without all the mess on other sites. I also appreciate the forum members who are knowledgeable about railroading who are happy to help amateurs like me.
Keep up the good work.

Ulrich is not, and has not been, moderated, banned, suspended, censored, edited, or otherwise penalized in any way. All I did was remind him that he has been warned, in the past, when talking about violence and unrest in his country, not to ascribe those acts to members of any particular ethnic, religious, national, or political group. I didn't even delete or edit the post in which he broke that particular rule, because I know that when I do so, he tends to get in a snit and storm off in a huff... which he did anyway.
His absence from this thread is entirely self-imposed. He'll come back when he's satisfied that he's stayed away long enough to teach me a lesson.

Had I known that, I might have volunteered to open the Diner. I am not a Diner regular, but I sure am a forum regular and probably one of the few who actually grew up in Chicago. Born and raised there for 23 years till I married and moved to the suburbs.
Anyhow, since this is a trains forum, someone's gotta show some pics of railroad bridges. So, how about the two double track bascule bridges (BOCT and SCAL) at 16th Street and the double mainline PRR lift bridge at 21st Street?

Good Morning All,
17F this morning, not the 60's we had in Sebring. I got back early because everything broke. The usually reliable Audi picked up some fault we couldn't cure in the injection, and the 23 after winning it's sprint race was found to have bent the exhaust valves on a mechanical overrev. Quite unusual. I left Sunday morning got to just south of Mooresville N.C, and did the rest yesterday. About 20 hours total driving time with stops every couple of hours. Of course now my knee is swollen a bit and I can't walk well. As others have said - getting old is not for sissies.
Chicago is another place I have avoided. Went to boot camp at NTC Great Lakes and had a 12 hour pass so we went to the city. It was at the height of the great unpleasentness of the early 70's so it was not a good time. I have been through many times since but never spent time there.
didn't do much last night but relax a bit after getting home but I did start on the PECO turnouts that are shorting across the frogs on the layout. I have found 4 that short for sure and will probably just do all of the medium and long turnouts for safety. I tried filing the first one but quickly decided I could do just as well or better if I used the Dremel with a bit of caution. Tonight I will start with the epoxy to fill the divots after I route the frogs out.
Hope the rest of you, especially Ulrich are doing ok. Cheers, J.R.
Good morning. A western omelette sounds kind of good, too bad I don't have an appetite in the morning. I'll just have a black coffee, thanks. The times I was in Chicago I never did ride the L. I seen them all over. It would be better to ride in that Pullman though Ed.
I learned the brake discs on the front of my truck are wearing thin at the dealer yesterday. I suppose I'll turn some wrenches today while work is slow. It would be better to take care of them now before they start grinding.

Personally, I think Steven Otte does an excellent job here along with Tom Stage. I'm glad we enjoy a moderated forum. I've seen what can happen on other forums where the rules are non-existant or very loosely enforced. I believe we all owe our moderators a free slice of pie and a root-beer float.
Good morning all. Flo, I could really use a western omelet and a side of wheat toast this morning. Can I get a second one in a critter proof to go box? With all the alcohol left outside for Ulrich, he's got to be feeling pretty tipsy by now with nothing to eat! I sure hope he comes inside soon. Diversion and conversation can be good stress relief. Ulrich, if you're out there, we're thinking of you.

Evening all, it is still light out here on the coast and the sunset was beautiful.
I think anyone with health issues has a very tough go. It would be hard to earn your keep never mind get ahead. At least Ulrich is getting good health care.
I was forced out of work for health reasons (not my choice) and didn't miss a beat as far as income went as I was a year from retirement anyway. I know I would not be where I am today if not for good health in my first fifty years. I had lots of offers from my employer to come work on contract in management after I retired and had big plans to do so, these health issues can come out of left field before you know what hit you, I was unable to.
The magic # for the playhouse demolition was 395Kilos/870Lbs. Seeing as how there were only two participants I'll treat you both to a sunset Surf and Turf. If I am around and you pass by this way I'll take you out for a real one.
I have been to the Chicago Museum of Industry twice, it is very cool.
Big Daddy there is a B&W series on You-Tube called "The Silent Service" it is pretty good. It reenacts real stories. There are a lot of familiar faces in the roles before they were famous.
They say it is going to rain, I'll believe it when I see it, we sure need it and so do I, that is the only way I'll get back in the train room.

All her other grades are just about perfect so she wasn't happy about math. She has been getting lots of offers from schools around the world. Pathology is her current interest. I think Medicine of some sort will be it.

Herrinchoker, I have not heard of that before and did some reading up on it "GYP" it is, at least on the forum. The British used it referencing some of their hounds. I won't go into details.

Henry I feel bad for Ulrich too. He and his lovely wife Petra (I hope I spelled that right) have had a plate of Hell on their hands. I have talked to him on the side only a few times in the past and will keep that in confidence. All I can say about him is he is a very prideful man yet humble and a very respectful man in my book. I would help them if I could.

Evening Diners,
TF be careful not to incur the wrath of Mr. Otte otherwise you might end up in the Cooler too!
I too feel bad for Ulrich, what's politically correct for him doesn't exactly line up with MRs policies, I understand that MR is just trying to prevent the flamethrowers from coming out, but as an individual having your voice silenced can be quite unnerving, all I can say is hopefully whatever Ulrich is dealing with gets better soon.
Well today was an interesting day at the Y, see we charge the dues either the 1st or 15th of every month, first caller was mildly peeved but understanding, second caller was really, REALLY peeved, after being cut off a half dozen times I told the lady to calm down or I'd hang up, she calmed down long enough for me to explain that I cannot accept payments over the phone that's YMCA policy, she decided that she should call Metro and complain, I told her that she could do that but it won't change the fact that she must come in to make a payment.
Lastly the last hour I was training with Amber the , a lady came in to exercise, when I went to scan her in the computer told me she has a termination notice on her account, I told her about it, she explained that she paid her dues so it shouldn't be on there, then Amber told be to "shut up because I'm stupid and don't know what I'm talking about" as she finally puts her phone down after staring at it since she got to work, smartphone usage is against company policy, anyways I proceed to allow her to handle it.
Meanwhile I get a call about canceling a membership, I am trying to tell the guy that he must come in to fill out a cancellation form when amber starts yelling, I mean YELLING, at the lady with the termination notice, as soon as I get off the phone I calmly ask the lady if she would leave her name and number and I'll have my supervisor (the program director) call her to straighten it out, she says yes and thanks me for my professionalism, being around the hotel/hospitality industry I've learned you have to be nice to guests to get nice back otherwise you'll have plenty of shouting matches to have as a spectator sport.
Sorry for the rant
Anyways I got my paycheck today!
I was showing my coworkers the picture of me in my suit, one of the girls that's a lifeguard loved the tie, she got confused on why I went to prom when cause she thought I was like 27-28 years old?!

Go ahead and put a whole keg out on the doorstep for Ulrich and let's tap a few barrels for us!

BigDaddy I feel bad for Ulrich, on multiple levels: medical, social, economic and political. His ideas of what he can post, do not correspond to managements'. I won't comment on that again. I expect if were completely banned, he would have to change his handle to get back in. At least he has a loving wife. I know people who are better off in the other ways, but have made bad choices in their married lives, sometimes multiple times, and have no one and others who have lost their spouse prematurely. We can leave a 1/2 liter outside for him. Ken thank for the mattress advice. I'll have to figure out how old it is, probably around 8.

Henry ... Your thoughts about our good friend, Ulrich, match mine . I have communicated with Ulrich via this forum for a long time, and I consider him to be a very good person. I look forward to the day he returns here.
Meanwhile, Ken (another good person) thoughtfully leaves a beer for Ulrich outside on most days.

My last time in Chicago was just before Christmas, 1989. We rode the City of New Orleans to Union Station to catch the train west to Hastings, NE.
The station was being remodeled, and there was no heat. It was so cold that when we left, we could see they had fired up the gas burners along the tracks.
Not good memories of that trip. By the time we got to Nebraska, it was 35 below zero and all the bathrooms on the train didn't work.
Amtrak put us up in a Chicago hotel because we were late and missed the connection, so I was able to take the family to the museums during our layover.
Not sure why, but I've never had any real desire to visit Chicago again. Maybe now that I've retired, it's time to make a trip there again.
A very enjoyable look at the CTA, Then-and-Now:
Very clever editing work here

Yes I do believe our good old German friend Ulrich has been in the Forum clink. I do believe he had figured out a way to still get in and post (God bless him) but was quickly erased.
One of his posts that was overlooked is on forum page 4 in the thread trade-offs between scales, page 2, Post 10. Dated March 25th 12:31 p.m. I'm sure that'll be erased tomorrow morning.

Done, thanks it was th 505, not the 585, the 1206 was the toilet malfunction
Ken ... You are correct. It is the U505 at the Chicago Museum of Science and industry. ... I visited that museum many times when I was a kid in the Chcago area. ... The Pioneer Zephyr was parked next to the U505 outside. To see the train, you had to tour the submarine.
Good Evening, Welcome to April!

I didn't see that Ulrich posted in the diner. I saw a post in a thread about "Trade-offs between scales" back on March 25 . I don't believe Ulrich was banned at all, he's just taking a break.

Wow Gary, now THAT is one huge brass locomotive! Another thread in here says brass prices are dropping, but still.....
I wonder if they had to remotor it, or put more pick-ups in the tender?
Ken, yes, Ulrich did post at the end of last months diner, only 3 or 4 days ago. I think Brent and I were the only ones to see it, as it quickly vanished.
Eveing Diners
Flo, give the gang and I a please. Leave a stein outside for Ulrich.
Did some post Ulrich was here in the dinner last month? Did he change icons again? Some how I missed it.
Henry how long should a mattress last, hum. There are a lot of variables. How often was the mattress rotated from head to foot? A person weight really comes in to play with durability. Mattress should be rotated head to foot 4 times a year minimum, more will help make it last longer.
Rule of thumb for a queen sizes.
$800 to $1100.00 Innerspring 6 to 8 years.
$1200 to $1800.00 Innerspring 7 to 10 years
$1900 to $2500.00 Innerspring 9 to 15 years.
Far as Chicago I do not have much use for the town. Hated the traffic and the black snow in the winter. Strange traffic signles for the turn lanes. Took my at the time Barb (yes, I know it was Barbie and Ken) for a business meeting / date. Drove up to the hotel parking valet in my new Cadillac Eldorado. He stood in front of the car and gave us 2 thumbs to get out! And I don't mean thumbs up, just get out!
Plus side? Pan pizza was good! Had a dinner in a Rotating Restaurant and it was the most expendive dinner for 2 I have ever paid for at $100.00 and remmeber this was around 1985 or so. Only time in my life I had Escargot and they tasted like Mushrooms?
Did get into U-505 so it was worth the trip for that a lone. Plus I had a few other first happen in Chicago traiffic that would get me banded for life if I posted details!
Hum, maybe I liked Chicago after all?
Ken
I hate Rust
Well I always wanted to see U855 at the Chicago Museum of Industry, after I read the book about it's capture by Daniel Gallery. He thought outside the box and hatched a plan to capture when when the occasion arose.
Well...it has a diesel engine
Uboat 505
Uboats had two heads, toilets to you land lubbers. One was usually filled with food at the start of the voyage. One particular version of Uboats could only flush while at the surface. You can readily imagine several problems with that.
One Uboat actually sunk off the coast of Scotland because of a toilet flushed at depth.
Good evening ...
I'll have a Chicago style hot dof with a Coke, please.
