something cheap probably a for sale by owner deal.

Steven, I'll also throw you some support for this, with a caution of looking carefully for a car in decent shape that won't just be the next money pit for you and payments that won't break the bank.  I cannot stress enough how important this is.  This can unfortunately mean moving away from your preferences based on style or "coolness" of the vehicle.  I was in a similar situation in college when the Camaro I was driving was constantly costing me money to keep it on the road.  I ended up selling it and getting a 4 door Cavalier for a very modest price, but was in much better shape mechanically.  Not a babe magnet for sure, but I had a reliable set of wheels with enough money left over to take out the babe that liked me for me.  To quote one of my favorite movies: "You must choose.  But choose wisely..."

Good Morning All,

17F this morning. I'll have a regular to go and a warm blueberry bagel with creamcheese please Zoe.

Not much done with the layout this weekend though I did clean a bit and finished the booster and auto/reverse circuit breaker revamp. Next will be to wire up the service yard with drops and a buss wire.

Steven, to be a bit contrary, it can be useful to learn to handle a credit card and develop a good credit score. I paid cash for everything until I wanted to buy a house. This being pre Internet, all I had was history with one bank and my Navy Federal Credit Union. Fortunately I was able to get a house mortgage through the VA but otherwise, no one wanted to talk to us. The trick cash or credit is not to spend more than you can afford and by all means build up some cash reserves before you sign up for anything long term (and that includes women). See, no lecture just my My 2 Cents and yes some of it might be do as I say not as I didWhistling.

All for now, I have paperwork waiting and then a generator set for the trailer.

      Chow, J.R.

yes my truck is a clunker at times but like a tee shirt I saw about the Mets old stadium which read "I miss Shea! It was a dump... but it was our dump!" That's like my truck, it's old, loud, kinda slow at times, guzzles gas, the paint isn't exactly showroom, neither is the interior but it's still MY truck.

Steven! Well stated!

I have driven my share of clunkers! My beloved MGB went in and out of the clunker stage several times. I always found a way to fix it, at least up until the time that the wiring harness melted.

The important part is that I was never embarrassed to drive the six or eight used (well used in most cases) cars and trucks that I owned, nor did I ever apologize to anyone for what they were. As you said, they were MY cars and I took pride in the sometimes extreme ends that I went to to keep them on the road. I did spend too much money trying to keep a Caprice running but I loved driving the big boat. Go figure - MGB to Caprice! What does that say about my taste in cars?!? Probably nothing printable!LaughLaughLaugh

You will look back at your loud truck with fond memories. If you aren't a bit of a rebel you won't have any fun!

I do have to support Brent when he questions your borrowing money to buy a car. Put some money aside every month. Buy another car when you can pay for it outright.

Cheers!!

Suits...?  I don't own a suit.

I own one tie, and the last time I tried to put it on was back around 1979.

I won't be putting one on again.

Hi Diners,

Brun Hilda, an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Been away from the forum a bit.  Aye, today was the day for wearing o' the green and all that.  I hope everyone had a great day.

Speaking of, beer does expire with a shelf life of about 3-6 months, although sometimes that can be stretched a bit.  Wine usually lasts around 5 years, and as near as I know, whiskey, etc. lasts indefinitely.

It would seem to me that a major question about suits is whether to wear a tie or not.  Suits without ties has become something of a full blown fashion trend.  Is Jos A Bank really regarded as a cheap suit?  I have a couple and they've both worn pretty well.

Nothing MRR to report today.

i hope everyone's bracket does well.

Less is more,...more or less!

Hey Dave its alright, sometimes I need a little nudge in the right direction, I'm probably not going to bother arguing with the phone people and just start sending them like 100 bucks every other check to get it paid off.

Ken I'll take a look at secured credit cards, I want to start building my credit so when I'm making enough money to afford a car loan I can go get a nice used car and not worry about getting approved.

And Maxman, yes my truck is a clunker at times but like a tee shirt I saw about the Mets old stadium which read "I miss Shea! It was a dump... but it was our dump!"  Happy Saint Patrick Day diners!

Flo, give the gang and I a green Beer and RJ a green glass of wine! Yep, leve a green stein outside for Ulrich.

It was all most a good day. Sigh Got some hard yard work out of the way Yes and will be feeling some muscles I have not felt for a few years.

Trains are being real mean to me tonight! Bang Head

1 Looks like the Mighty B&O F7a BBQ its decoder? Won't go into details now, I will save that for the DDC section.

2 The Mighty CB&Q F7's cannot pull rail spike? Same train it been dragging for sometime now. Made no changes to the train or rails. Need to check each engine and she what the problem is.

3 Was using a C&O RS2 and B&O GP7 to pull the CB&Q train. Then it stalled and by this point I don't care! Confused

Steven Good to hear you don't have a credit score, so you have a good chances still to get a good one. Did you the chech recommended Credit Cards for you? More than likely it will be a secured credit card but it is a start!

Are you ready for Key West? I love it, but if you have any social hang-ups at all. it can be quite a shock. . I love the bars, I love the party, it is great! Have fun!

I doubt we will be doing the bar scene...  I do plan to take the lady and her daughter and Son In Law out for dinner on Sunday after the concert.  We are planning to visit Hemmingway House, some botanical garden's, possibly go out on a tour boat.  I am waiting to hear back from my son in England as he knows someone who used to operate a tour boat.  I am one of those, how should I say, straight but not narrow (minded) guys so even if we do some of the Bar Scene stuff I am pretty hard to shock.....  (Even if I am am ordained Deacon.  LOL)  More likely we will sit on the couch and watch some movies and......  Well whatever. Whistling  Nothing not Kosher, I'm sure.

I went to Provincetown in 1975 for my honeymoon.  I didn't know.  I ordered octopus but they were sold out.  My bride was jealous that the waiter, dressed in a sailor suit, like something from the Village People liked me more than her.  I have never had the courage to order octopus again.

I hear you have to cook it very briefly or a really long time.  My son ate a live octopus in Korea, to impress some local woman.  It was animal cruelty as far as I am concerned.

And this is not a case of not being nice. It is a case of calling it as I see it. Sometimes there is a need for more tough love and less mollycoddling.

Oh... And for the first 4 years of my teaching carreer I worked on the Saturday Morning Garbage pick up runs at the Trailer Parks where I lived.  That allowed us money to pay the lot rent and for us to squeeze by so my wife could be a stay at home mother.  There are no jobs that are beneath our dignity to do if it is honest and needs to be done!

perhaps throw some positive advice my way.

.

Go to a young adult singles event in Baton Rouge and meet someone.

.

Take that $300.00 you would spend on a suit and spend a couple of days in Pensacola during college spring break week.

I don't have credit, checked credit karma, not bad credit but no score at all.

Also I'm attending college next spring, definitely not planning to be a Maintenance man or desk clerk for the rest of my life, my parents aren't exactly rich we make do.

We've all been in that borrowing from john to pay harry spots, instead of just telling me what not to do perhaps throw some positive advice my way.

Thanks for the kind words Ray!

Show up to a job interview wearing a blazer when the recommended dress is a suit and the chances are you will be disqualified.

.

Unless the job position REQUIRES a suit or jacket, it is now pretty bad advice to show up for a job interview in long sleeves.

.

You can be sure that if you wear long sleeves the assumption will be that you are hiding offensive tattoo work.

.

Wear short sleeves and show off the arms. Let the interviewer know you are not an attitude problem.

He probably knows by now that some on here are not very nice to young adults...

Say what?  No, I was not born with a silver spoon.  I think it might have been wood.  And this is not a case of not being nice.  It is a case of calling it as I see it.  Sometimes there is a need for more tough love and less mollycoddling.

It is the world that can be not a nice place.

Young Steven seems to be a very mechanically adept individual, at least according to his exploits.  What he needs to do is get off his seat and at least apply to an automotive (or other) trade school if he has no interest in college.  That would be a carear path with more future opportunity than being a desk clerk or pool cleaner.

Two comments, for what it is worth. Blazer and slacks is an acceptable alternative in some situations, but it is not a replacement for a suit. A suit is a more formal option. Show up to a job interview wearing a blazer when the recommended dress is a suit and the chances are you will be disqualified. If you are going to get a blue blazer, go with either grey slacks for a dressy look or tan for a casual look. Never wear black slacks with a blue blazer. It looks like you got dressed in the dark and couldn't tell the difference in the closet.

Richard, excellent advise!  Always do your best to dress for the occassion.  One reason for me to spend the $$$ for the 3 piece suit is that three or four times a year I need to be wearing that for the occasion.  Generally that is when I am representing a couple of the community committes I am on.  That dress is pretty much is expected of me in those situations.  The 2 piece I use for church and other dressy occasions.  I have also been told not to bring a suit with me when I visit Key West in a couple weeks.  Nobody wears a suit to anything (including church) down there.  I would look completely out of place.  It is important to know what the occasion is and what should be expected for it for yourself.

I vote for a dark blue blazer, and gray or black pants. . .

Afternoon folks....

Maxman.....  hey, give the kid a break!  I would be willing to bet that you, unless you were born with the proverbial silver spoon in your mouth, took some time to learn a few lessons as well.  I sure know I did!  I was married and a Father at the age of 19.  I was also going to the most expensive Music College in the world then as well.  My wife was working full time for the phone company and I was working part time as a professional singer (section leader) for a church.  Summers I worked one year for a golf course and the next three summers as a summer grunt for the phone company.  I can remember times when the fuel oil bill came in counting pennies and then borrowing from the parents to be able to meet the cost.

We were living a an 8' x 36' 20 year old mobile home that was a dump, set across the road from my parents house who gave us electrical and water from the farm for it.  I went without lunch many times because the $$$ ran out before the month did.  It was a very tough time.  I have some idea what the kid is going through with his life at the moment.

Today I pay cash for everything!  When I bought the Chevy Volt, I paid cash for the car (minus the trade-in value and the rebate for it) and the car was $35,000 delivered.  I own my house outright, and pay off my credit card (from the credit union, the only financial institution I will do business with for what I consider moral and ethical reasons, not to be discussed here).  I haven't paid a cent in interest in over 20 years.  And I don't intend to as long as I have $$$ in my accounts.  Yes it took a lot of years to be able to get to that place, and I had to learn some tough lessons along the way.

My credit card has no interest as long as it is paid off in full every month before the due date.  I have learned how to make sure that is done each and every month.  If I can't pay cash for it......  I don't need it.  Steven is not in that position yet in his life.

$300 for a suit???  The last 4 suits (two 3 piece and 2 two piece) I bought were from Men's Wearhouse and set me back about $2,000 with discounts.  I like to wear nice and expensive clothes these days (see paragraph above).  Only reason I bought 4 suits is I lost enough weight to have the first two swim on me 9 months after I bought them......  I will be picking up two pair of dress pants for when I am out and about but don't need the suits, tomorrow.  Those set me back $263.  I have shelled out about $4,000 for new clothes in the past year and a half.  I don't know how the others on here do things and like to look, but I am enjoying the looks and smiles from the ladies I get when dressed well.  Steven might as well...  Ya think?  Only advise I have for the kid is to not share some of those parts of his growing up on here.  He probably knows by now that some on here are not very nice to young adults...Whistling

Ask them if they will make a lay-away for you.

Lay away?  Lay away?   Golllll E.  If he learned to budget, payed his bills on time, and saved the money he wastes at the junk yard trying to turn his latest broken down poop box into a 2X4 mobile, he'd have enough credit to get one of those little plastic cards that allow you to buy now and pay a couple weeks later.
