Thanks everyone for the condolences.
It's the suddeness for Mark's passing that caught me with my pants down. Nearly all of my friends and relatives have suffered miserably until the merciful end.

We have enough diversity to battle out US or Candadian politics.
German, Swedish, Polish, British, Nigerian, Australian or Saudi politics don't inspire forum fights because none of us have knowledge or an opinion. Well, Ulrich has an opinion, but he is our only link to the continent. Unless Angela Merkel signs up, there is no problem here. JMHO

Ed,
I think that is the cats meow. It would be cool to get permission to be on the observation platform when going forward though I think between the speed it goes and the fact that the control cab is just above the deck you'd get a firm no.
Just about time to head out. Maybe even get some time in on the layout. I did finally decide to alter the yard throat so it makes more sense. We shall see. Big thing will likely be getting a clear shot to route the turnout controls.

I have not seen mine yet.
I finally re-subscribed last month for three years, and I hope the new subscription starts with the April issue.
I have avoided the April Fools Joke spoilers. I love looking for it in the issue.

Henry: Adding my condolences.
Good Morning All,
Henry - Sorry to hear about your friend. Seems to be a run of bad news lately.
Haven't been on the layout yet since I got back.
Speaking of the NYC, there was the jet powered RDC they did in the 60's that set a record at 183mph. One of the volunteers at the museum was an engineer (not the engine driver type) on the project. One reason they didn't continue with the project he told us was in addition to going really fast, the jet engines also blew all the loose ballast off the track. That would have been interesting.
I had to pick one of our guys up at the White Plains airport last night. Flight was supposed to land at 6pm and tracking had it on time. At 6:05 the cell lot display suddenly changed to "diverted to JFK". Turns out a plane got disabled on the runway and they had to shut down until they figured out how to move it. After hemming and hawing for a while, they decided to finish the trip to the original destination instead of terminating 30 miles away in the middle of NYC. Only lost 2 hours messing around so in the end it was ok. Just glad the CFO didn't go to get him. She would have been on the rev limiter right away.............

I'm sorry to hear of your friend, Mark, and his untimely passing. I agree that every day of life is a gift to be cherished and appreciated.
Regards, Ed
Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast. It was 10c today.
Henry, so sorry to hear of your friends passing, at least he was doing something he loved when it happened. I was riding with a friend and noticed he was not behind me anymore. I went back to find he had met a Volvo head-on, it was not a pleasant sight. He lived to tell about it, however, when I went into emergency at the hospital with him, my Mom was there and my grandmother had just died of a heart attack. I have had better days.
Charlie, sorry to hear you are hitting a rough patch, those Manitoba winters are far too long, it's too bad you can't get somewhere warm for a few weeks to charge up the old batteries. My Dad was 43 when he pulled the plug and we came out to the West Coast (and I'm glad he did) He just could not take the cold and snow with his health issues.
Watched a really interesting video on circuit boards today.
I think I really have the SMD 603 soldering down. After blowing through about twenty of them in learning the art, all of a sudden shazam! After reading one article where the guy promised it would become easy to solder those little dots with practice, it did. I figured it was like learning a tough piece on the guitar and just kept plugging away. I paid about $2.25 for 500 of them so I still have lots left.
Rode the bike this morning and shattered my old record for 20km (49:09) on a really tough mountain program, then went with the wife and dogs for a two-hour walk in the sunshine, so I burned off about 1500 extra calories that will be partially returned with a couple of Rum and Pepsi's.
I think I'll go pick up the guitar for an hour or so and then after dinner, park myself in front of the idiot box tonight with a giant bowl of popcorn covered in lots of butter. I'll still have to eat something else before bed or I will fade away.
Tomorrow I think the trainroom will be the destination as it will be a no workout day. I have lifted the RH and TT off the layout in order to install the lights. Sort of like this.
Time for Rum!
All the best to all.
Brent

My friend Mark is on the right. He was the most boisterous high energy guy I ever met.
He was born in South Africa, but has been a US citizen for 30-35 years. He was a more avid motorcyclist and proficient that I was. I have not ridden in a couple years and was not following the local motorcycle forum
I did see Marks' pics from his annual MC trip to South Africa a couple days ago on facebook. The land is a beautiful as most of our national parks. I thought for an instant, that would be fun, then having ridden with Mark, I thought, I'd just be holding up the group.
Today Mark was last in line and then he wasn't there. The group went back, found his minimally damaged bike and Mark lying beside it. No one knows if it was a medical emergency or what happened. Mark won't be coming home.
Tell you family you love them. Life can be shorter than you think
Thanks Ed, hey, TOP, I'll split it with ya Ed! Time for drinks and horderves! It's all most 4 pm here in WI. Close enought to 5 for me!

mbinsewiWas is that in your picture? An E ?
Yes, an E8. NYC did have some passenger F3s. 4 A units and 2 B units if I recall. They bought them thinking the added tractive effort would be needed on the grades east of Albany on the B&A. Turns out the six-axle Es and PAs had plenty of pull for the Berkshire grades.

Later they were used on the Big Four. In 1958 they were regeared for freight service.
Yes, Indeed! Top '0 The Page. Tell Flo to spike the check on my nail and I'll settle up before closing
Mike is chipping in, too so let's belly-up to the bar (salad, desert or otherwise) and have at it!
Ulrich, the video stirred up another memory. Sometime in the early 60's we went to see my parents friends who lived in a high rise on the upper West side, I think, Their appartment overlooked a big rail yard and they had a telescope.
I was plugged into the telescope for the evening. I think they could have been SW1200's, looking at http://www.thedieselshop.us/DataEMDIndexYD.HTML
Anyone know what yard that would have been?
If you've ordered from China on Ebay and gotten a tracking number that you don't know what to do with, try Postal Ninja. Beware of sites that want you to install software to track your package.
No documentation, just the usual bubble wrap in undestructable plastic
I'll go into Windows and see what I can do. Thanks.
Mine are F's, an A an B set. They have a gray strip under the grills, and on the A unit, they make a 90 degree corner down to the pilot. Along with some white stripes in between.
Was is that in your picture? An E ?
Just did a search, mine are the 20th Century Limited. And it looks like the two-toned gray cars are the cars I want.
mbinsewiWhen you spin the wheel faster than what little mousey thinks you should be, it goes into "jet" mode
Did your new mouse come with any documentation? In Windows you can adjust the sensitivity of the wheel:

Yes, it looks like miss is wearing sandles. Her suitcase is too big too
mbinsewiI have a black (shiny new) FA/B set that looks like this.
FAs? Freight cars went with NYC FAs. They didn't have any equipped for passenger service.
maxmanThey have an RS3 on display in Schenectady.
I like the way it looks with the grayed out windows. The paint job is very sharp.
The way the picture is taken, the coupler looks oversized. I am sure it is an illusion, but it kind of looks like a life sized Lionel locomotive.
She's barfoot, maybe she's a "hippy chick"
On another note, I have a black (shiny new) FA/B set that looks like this. What cars go with it? The two-toned gray?
Just wondering.
I got a new mouse, since I have so many USB ports, I got a wireless. When you spin the wheel faster than what little mousey thinks you should be, it goes into "jet" mode Still trying to get used to it.
I guess she's not barefoot, I just did a super blow-up, sandles.
Have a great day!
A beautiful scene in Hudson, New York:

I see a passenger carrying a guitar without a case! Hudson is about 20 miles south of Albany. This is the early days of Penn-Central.
Thanks on behalf of Mrs. ROR for the birthday wishes. March is the birthday month in our house. Out of the five of us, four have birthdays in March and three of them are within a week. It makes for a crazy month.
A couple of weeks ago I had a cap fall off. Turns out the cap did not get sealed like it should have after the root canal, there was seepage under the cap, and the post corroded away. The bad news is that there is not enough of the tooth left for a new cap so I am looking at an extraction and implant. Whoopie. For the time being I have a hole in my mouth large enough for Tom, Becky, and *** Joe. (The forum did the editing of the post, not me. Apparently Mark Twain was not all that politically correct. ).
