Mornin' folks!

Track fiddler
Playing a musical instrument doesn't come back to you like riding a bike.

Musical instruments tend to be  bit more involved than riding a bike....  LOL  I talk from the standpoint of being a professional musician for most of my life.   Had hoped to be doing much better on my Classical Guitar by now.  Might help if I had any time to practice!  Biggest problem I have is that the calouses on my hands are gone from years of not playing.  Have to get started on it!

Happy soon to come B-day Ken.  Heck, you're just a kid!  The year I graduated from High School you would have been in 2nd. or possibly 3rd. grade......  Your still a kid!  May you have many more, my friend.

Finished my tax return.  Not a happy camper.  My refund this year is all of $14.  Last year it was almost $900.  Guess some ....  Not going to say it as it could be considered a political statement!

Need to get moving as I will be meeting my son at a local garage to get my old trailer inspected.  DiL needs to use it to pick up Girl Scout Cookies for her troop to distribute.  Guess they are getting a lot of cookies this year.  I know I bought way too many!

Have a great day out there!

Good Evening!

Just dropping by to say hello! Nothing really to say today.

Well, that makes me even more a kid! I am roughly half a year younger than Ken! Worrying thought, is that my FIL passed away when he had just turned 63. Just felt a pain in his chest, went to the ER, where they gave him a pain killer and sent him home. He died the same night - from the heart attack he had earlier.

Nothing to do for the rest of the day - maybe I´ll watch some episodes of "Petty Coat Junction".

Happy times!

I hear ya Ray.    I will need a lot of practice to catch up where I left off.  The nice thing is I have heavily calloused fingers from construction.  I can beat and slide my fingers on the strings to the hiltLaugh  when I pick it up again.

So I'm sitting here at the hotel waiting for my Judy,  she doesn't drive you know.  I drop her off and pick her up from work everyday.  She had some administrative problems at the hotel this evening so I have to wait for her.

It's going on an hour now so I'm bored,  what else are you going to do?  I see these Canadian geese coming out of the northern treeline.  They flew by so fast into the southern treeline till I can't see them anymore.  I'm like man!  that was really fast,  how fast do they fly?

So I Googled it.  A Canadian goose can fly in excess of 40 miles an hour under normal circumstances.  70 miles an hour with a tailwind.

I never knew this.  After I learned this I checked out which way the flag was going from the wind.  It was whipping pretty good the direction they were flying.  I guess I just saw some 70 mile-an-hour geeseLaugh

Not as good as 70 mile-an-hour Cabeese..... but good enough for meLaugh

Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast. It was about 9c today and we are expecting 10cm of snow overnight. I'll believe it when I see it although this is officially the coldest February on record for us.

TF, tailwinds can make a big difference in groundspeed. Once I was coming home from Hawaii and the pilot came on and announced that we were going faster than he had ever gone in his career as an airline pilot. Got home in record time on that trip. Most of our weather takes a direct path to Vancouver from Hawaii, we call it the pineapple express. It takes about an hour longer to fly to Hawaii than it does coming home.

Just getting ready to go into Vancouver to the Canucks game with the kid. It is a more expensive trip now he is old enough to have a beer.Laugh We use to go to quite a few every year, now he is in Ottawa it is only when he gets home we try and catch one.

Sorry to hear about your tax refund Ray. We are hearing a lot of grumbles from all our American friends. My pension cheques just shot up as the tax rates have changed, plus it is indexed every quarter.

I have been painting lampshades for the RH and I am not looking forward to soldering the teeny tiny little wires onto the teeny tiny little LEDs.

White on the inside.

Green on the outside.

Happy Birthday MLC hope it was a good one.

Well best go choose what Jersey to wear tonight. It is always a game to try and wear the one the team shows up in.Hmm We'll have a quick snack to tie us over until we get to the arena and burgers and beer.Dinner

All the best to all.

Brent.... The Jersey thingIndifferent  I have four Minnesota Wild jerseys and I think they have one more I don't have.  I remember the day when you wore the darker color jersey when it was a home game and the white jersey when they were guest.

Anyway,  I'll go for the Canucks tonight,  just as long as you buy me a burger and a beerSmile, Wink & Grin......Here's to your team KidYes

Your example of air speed and wind having nothing to do with the ground and your trip back from Hawaii in record time is definitely appreciated.  Physics has always fascinated me.

I have an old favorite customer named Phil who is a retired doctor...... Of course we always called him Dr. Phil.  Phil worked at the VA Hospital on Hiawatha right next to the Air Force Base in Minneapolis.  The stories that man told me we're incredible but those were the stories inside the hospital.

What relates to what we are talking about here.  Air speed has nothing to do with the ground.  Dr. Phil was out having a cigarette outside the VA one day before he quit smoking.  He heard two cargo planes winding up thier four props at the Air Force Base.  He heard them kick into High Rev take off mode.

What he described to me that he saw that day was something I wish I could have seen.  He saw the two cargo planes bucking a headwind shortly after takeoff,  sitting hanging in the air and actually watched them go backwards.  He was so fascinated by what he was observing that he lit up another cigarette because it was too intense to go back in the building.

He said John,  I didn't know what was going to happen but I had to see.  Finally the wind must have died down and the two planes went on their way.

That would have been something to see!

 Eveing Diners. Sigh

Flo give the gang and a Beer Please.

Wife is in the Hospital. She called me at work today to tell me a few things. At one point she could not say what she was trying to say and seemed lost for words!

I closed the store and drove home and took her to the ER. They did a cat scan (is that spelled right) and they found cats!

Seems she has a few AITT's or ministroke's! Far as they know thet did not happen today, but they have happned! That does explain a lot to my daughter and I. She forgets I told her something and swears she told me something she didn't!

When I left she had pretty good vital signs and is stable. At this point I am not worried about her passing, but the quaility of her life and my.

On the brighter side of today I got to meet and help a WWII Vet!  I noticed a SUV pull up to the ER entrance with 2 older ladys and a older man. He was wearing a Veteran Base Ball Cap. One of the ladys (turns out it was is daughter) went to get a wheel chair so I hung around when she came back a lone. They where trying to get him out when I asked if I could help?

When I got him into the chair they thanked me and I told them "It is Pleasure to help a fellow Vet". He looked up and saw my XVIII Airborn Baseball cap and smiled. Later we talked for a few minutes and found out he was Air Force or Army Air Corps and flew in B-29's in the Pacific over Japan. He was a little surprisied I knew what I did about B-29's.

Told him "the B-29 was a great plane when it worked right" and he said "we wished we could carry a extra engine with us". I replied "25 cylinder's just does not seem right, 24 or 26 sounder sound right. I believe the rear row of cylinder's would burn up there valves after 25 hours or so.

Speaking of "I am a Believer" my wife told me Peter Tork passed a way! Say what you will about the Monkeys they got me into Rock And Roll.

Ken - I am sorry to hear about Sue having a series of mini strokes. I hope she will recover soon! I have been through that  and I have recovered completely. Well, almost.

Come on Ulrich. I thought you had a TV set and never turned it on because you had no time for that sort of thing.

Nah, not TV - that set ain´t connected to anything. You´ll find all of that on Youtube! No breaks for commercials...

It's so easy to Take The Train

Ken, I'm sorry to hear of Sue's emergency. You did the right thing. Sometimes a stroke is hard to detect but early intervention can make a huge difference. Don't hesitate  to ask if there is any way I can help.

Speaking of Veterans helping Veterans —

Did you hear about this story?

I admire Colin Powell very much.

Ken ... Sorry to hear about your wife being in the hospital. Preyers for her.

Ed .... Thanks for the NYC video. It brings back fond memories of rail travel before Amtrak. .... I saw the story about Colin Powell a few days ago on another network. I like it when the news has good stories such as that one.

Brent ..... Looks like you are doing good work with your LED project.

Assuming no interruptions, I will be working on the model rairload today.

Well, I don´t think this has something to do with any health care system, but with the fact that you´ll find quacks everywhere in the world. It takes more than just good grades in school to become a good doctor!

JBT1

JBT1?

JPT1... it has to be on the motherboard somewhere.

It just HAS to be on the motherboard somewhere!

The instructions say that it is next to the battery,

But I do not see a jumper next to the battery.

Where is JBT1 ??

Oh... THAT is JBT1, it is not even a real jumper, it is just two beads of solder next to the battery, you have to short them wqith a screw drive.

Hmmm... Shouldn't I power down first.

Been there, it did reset the csmos, but I still cannot boot from this USB drive!

And you thought that DCC was painful, I got an $1100 dollar server sitting on my desk and at the moment it just might as well be a boat anchor.

Good morning from the West Coast, it is around 0c and the occasional flake is falling.

Well, the Canucks lost last night but it was a heck of a good game. I really admire the condition those kids are in. If they didn't destroy their bodies playing hockey they would have amazingly healthy lifetimes.

Enjoyed the time with the kid as he has been hitting the books so much on his week off we haven't seen him much. They were filming "The Flash" at the Vancouver Public Library last night so we walked over to the "circus" and the kid said hi to a couple of people he knew as they were on break. They had taken over two blocks right in the center of town.

On Wednesday my wife's stepmother had the daily call from her son and she was speaking gibberish. He immediately called an ambulance and they were at her house quickly, took her to the small local hospital, gave her a cat scan and loaded her onto a chopper and had her in the O/R in Vancouver very quickly to remove a blood clot in her brain, they couldn't believe she was even alive as the clot/bleed was huge. She lived a couple hours East of Vancouver in the sticks.

I have had so many broken bones and other injuries from my adventurous lifestyle over the years and quite honestly I don't know how the health care system could be any better.

Speaking of famous flat tires, Bill Gates got a flat tire on the way to Whistler once and some guy stopped and changed his tire in the pouring rain for him and went on his way. The guys bank phoned him and said his $275.000.00 mortgage had been paid off. Yep, Bill took his license plate down and found out who he was and did that for him.

I also admire Colin Powell, I am generally a good judge of character and have occasionally been wrong about people, but he is one guy I have always admired.

Ken, I hope Sue returns to full health. I wonder if the strokes occurred when she had her surgery? Happy Birthday Happy B-Day to you if I don't make it back to the diner by Sunday.

I was a huge Monkies fan, sorry to hear about Peter Tork.

Bear, Mikey M had those guys from NZ that were restoring the Mosquitoes on "Plane Savers" yesterday. It was interesting.

TF, I remember when I use to fly up through the canyons North of Vancouver, we would hit some headwinds that would have made walking faster as our groundspeed would get so low. Great caution required when flying into strong headwinds. We would go up right away when we ran into those. Didn't feel like dropping out of the sky if all of a sudden they quit.

Speaking of guitars and calluses, my calluses are so thick chunks of them fall off and I still have lots left underneath. I think it would take a looooong time for me to lose them. I have to be careful touching the wife with that hand or I hear about it.Laugh

Well, it will be a busy weekend around here so I best get to helping the wife bath the puppy for its first dog show.

All the best to all.

Stopping by to wish Sue a full recovery.  I worked with a young urologist, in his late 40's and having chest pain.  He saw his cardiologist, who did a stress test and pronounced his pain, non cardiac.  He made it to his car in the parking lot, where he had his heart attack.  He made a full recovery, but medicine is still an art.

It's been a  weird week.  My wife said I was talking in my sleep in an unknown language.  She asked me what I said and I repeated myself, exactly.  The only language I know is Spanish, but it wasn't that.  Speaking in tongues isn't something that runs in my family.

The next night I awoke and couldn't go back to sleep. I futzed around the house and went back to bed at 6 am.  Got up later, had breakfast, took a shower and as I was putting my underwear on, I saw drops of blood hitting the carpet!

I left a blood trail from the bathroom and it wasn't obvious what was bleeding.  I could see it wasn't prostate bleeding and determined it was intestinal bleeding, so I knew it wasn't a 911. It seemed like it took a long time to find the source of bleeding, it was skin, that hadn't bleed since my vasectomy 30 years ago. ??

That's weird, I thought.  There was absolutely nothing to see, except a spot, the size of a #40 drill, dripping blood.  I held pressure, 5 min, 10, min, 20 min, 40 min.  I do take asprin, but it seemed like a long time to me. After 40 min: drip drip drip.

By now my wife has returned home from shopping.  She sees what can't be more than a teaspoon of blood on paper towels and is ready to call 911.  I called a (different) urologist, friend.  He thought it might be an angiokeratoma.  "They take a long time to spot bleeding"  he said.  Jim it's been 40 minutes, I said.  "It's going to take longer than that because you are on asprin"

90 minutes later, the old medical adage, All Bleeding Stops, came true.  Hydrogen peroxide did a pretty good job on the carpet.  I was afraid to do anything that involved lifting or straining that might restart the bleeding.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A hot cocoa please. Thanks.

Ken - Hope Sue makes a complete recovery from the mini-stroke.

Henry - Hope the bleeding stays stopped. Yikes!

Ulrich - Glad to see you are out of the hospital, but sorry you feel the need to sell the trains due to other issues.

W*^k - Have done 3 full days of the new j*b, and so far am liking it. The owner said that I am already much better than the one whom I replaced. (I have a much better sense of direction, which is a good thing when you are a delivery driver.)

Weather - Warm next couple days, but strong wind and a very strong cold front Sunday will bring those strong winds and cold temps with snow.

Trains - The staining of the tie load was not satisfactory, so I am going with painting with acrylic's after assembly is complete. (Read - Glue is dried and cured.) Even after staining the ties 3 times, they were still way too light colored for new ties. They would look okay as older used ties, or even "currently in use" ties on a rail line, but not newly delivered (or being delivered) ones.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night.

Good Evening,

Ken, wishing Sue a speedy recovery. My mother had a mini-stroke once and made a full recovery. She did have to take her drivers license test over again though.

We had a busy day of errands and are expecting more snow again tomorrow.

My friend in ICU had the ventilator removed and is doing a lot better. They decided he didn't need a tracheometry and have him on some kind of CPAP machine. He was sitting in a chair today and talking which is all really great news.

Not much else is new.

As I watched, I could remember those spots on the Hudson line, looking out the window of the engine...

We are in for some freezing rain on Saturday night and extremely high winds on Sunday. I hate freezing rain. It is about the only part of winter that I can't stand. It used to be pretty rare IIRC. Now it happens regularly. Sunday's winds are predicted to reach 110 kph! I think I'll stay in bed!Smile, Wink & Grin

Good Morning!

It´s sunny again, but much colder than a few days ago. The next days will see increasing temperatures, but at night it will be quite frosty!

Dave - stay safe!

I found this gem on Youtube, a hommage to the 3rd Avenue EL in New York!

Note the complete absence of those works of art, created by juvenile delinquents artists, which adorn walls and trains alike these days.

Enjoy!

Happy times!

Happy Saturday!

Anybody see the ja Bear lately? Haven't heard from him all week.

He made a full recovery, but medicine is still an art.

That's why doctors and lawyers practice medicine and practice law.

Our younger grandson visited the other day and we had a new (handed-down) Thomas train for him to play with.

MY dad had a habit of rolling his tongue like young Wyatt here is doing. Heredity is an amazing thing.

Wilson got into the fun as well!

A gem of a film, indeed, Ulrich! The rail-lifts at the Harlem River swing bridge was neat to see at 7:15. Like a steam locomotive, The EL was quite utilitarian and very artistic at the same time.

I have a beautiful book of photographs of the Third Avenue by Lawrence Stelter with many views of neighborhood life among the EL tracks. Beautiful.

Alas, like so many iconic pieces of history, the cutting torch often has the last say.

I hope Sue is home for your BIRTHDAY tomorrow, Ken. Best Wishes!

Good day, folks — Ed
