Good Afternoon!

We had an enjoyable "lunch" at our favorite Asian restaurant. We like to have our main meal around noon, which is the common dinner time in Germany. For the first time in the 35 years we are together, Petra and I had the same meal - beef and veggies in a coconut & curry sauce, served with rice, of course! Petra had a Bei Jing soup for a starter and I enjoyed my usual spring roll. We paid about $30 including beverages, which is really  reasonable price, given the excellent quality of the food, served by rally friendly folks. I am just thinking that Todd the King of Toddland would love the place (and the waitress).

Both of us ate too much, but a slice of Petra´s birthday cake still found a place!

The remnants will be finished off tomorrow!

No snow in sight! I think we already had our winter, as we see flocks of migrant birds heading north. At the moment, it´s rather wet outside, with the temperature in the mid 40s F. The weekend will see temperatures of 55F and above - spring time in Germany - well, at least the North!

Steven - thanks for the good wishes! I shall try to stay out of the hospital, I think I had my fill of going to that place.

I was about to have a heart attack myself this morning, when I was shoveling the snowplow dam from the bottom of the driveway,

That´s what happened to a neighbor of mine some years ago. Unfortunately, he didn´t make it. 52 is not the right age to go!

Better to go slow!

Happy times!

. . .Now where's that lying groundhog?!

Old Phil predicted it was going to be an early spring; unfortunately he didn't didn't make any predictions about what it would be like getting there.

Good afternoon, it is 2c under beautiful sunshine today. It stopped snowing around 0500hrs this morning. I think it has been 13 years since we had this much snow, makes it kind of nice when you don't get it that often. A few rare snow pics.

126' of driveway shoveled three times.

I wonder how many times the mayor has had his street plowed in the last few days.Laugh

I actually prefer they leave it like this, my neighbours and I have an ongoing battle with the city over some things and are a bit bitter when it comes to the Mayor.Laugh

Brent, what kind of racing Datsun 510? I've helped with a couple of them.

It was a long time ago. I think it was a 1972. My friend that does Drag cars and 70s Broncos builds bought it off someone, rebuilt it and sold it to me as he had too many vehicles and not enough yard. It was lowered, sort of tubbed out with engine modifications and it was street legal. It was a whole lot of fun to drive. My RX-7 Turbo II would do circles around it in every way. I took my RX out to the driving centre where I had done a bunch of training and did acceleration testing on it. 0 to 60 MPH was 4.8 sec.

Funny thing about the Datsun, several years later I sold it back to him, he did another rebuild on it and then sold it back to the people he had originally bought it from. They totaled it around a phone pole 4 days later.

Brent, you cannot use the common abbreviation for diagonal cutters in this forum.  There is no end to what can be redefined as unacceptable these days.

The great unwashed that come to our house and hear the "B" word used frequently seemed quite horrified at first, but soon realize the legitimacy of the word. The Westminster Dog show was just on in NY. If you were in the seats the "B" word would be swirling around you everywhere. I know the "B' word is used in the bosses top doggie magazines, must not be a Kalmbach publication. Take a pill, people. No wonder the world is in such a mess.

Well, I am off to the Doc for quarterly maintenance. My old Doc retired recently and I am not quite sure if I like this new guy yet. I will give him a good chance and will get to know him a bit before I decide. I had already decided any new Doc I was getting had to have small hands, this guy stands well over 6' so he already has a strike against him.Laugh

Time to hit the shower.

All the best to all.

Howdy ..

Talking about snow, I don’t miss all the snow we had when we lived in Michigan. .. Here in KY, we have had a lot of liquid snow (rain) lately.  Way too much of it.

Ulrich ... it’s good to hear you and Petra had a good meal together at the Asian place. That cake looks very good, too.

Ken ... last night you mentioned your wife left a bag of dog poop on your porch. Reminds me of a funny true story . Some friends of ours have neighbors who have a robot vacuum cleaner and they left it running while they were away from home. They returned home a couple of hours later.  One or both of their two dogs had pooped on the floor. The robot vacuum cleaner spread it all over the carpet. It was everywhere.  It was a big, smelly mess.

Have a a nice evening, everybody.

Good Evening,

Brent, that is a lot of snow. Reminds me of Dec/64 when we were living in Coquitlam. The 4' fence in our backyard disappeared. Dad and I went down to New Westminister to pick up my sister who was arriving on the train for Christmas. We did manage to pick her up but only made it to a plaza parking lot at the base of the hill, several miles from home as there was no way the car would have made it up the hill without tire chains. It remainded there for 2 weeks. The Fraser froze over that winter.

Well, I spoke to 'Sis' tonight and my friend isn't doing well. They tried to take him off the ventilator but ran into a lot of problems so he is back on it. He has a temp of 103 so things don't look very good. She didn't want me to come down but we will be going to visit her when she is home. Sad day, as he is only 78.

I have a good (as in positive) story to tell about Kalmbach customer service. I decided to sign up for MR's Video Plus feed, in particular because I want to study the scenery methods especially on the Canadian Canyons series. When I initially placed the order I missed the fact that there was a discount option for MR subscribers so I sent customer service a note asking what they could do. That was late on Tuesday night. I had a response saying that the billing had been adjusted by noon today (Wednesday). I thought that was pretty decent service.

CN Charlie .... Sad news bout your firend. Porayers continue.

Dave ... Thanks for sharing the good work by MR Customer Service.

Ken .... I think it is best not to run any appliances (including a robot vacuum cleaner) when away from home. You never know what might happen.

Dave, you should check out some of the FB pages like Classic Canadian Pacific or Canadian railway modelers or structures and scenery, too many to list. Cool stuff like this.

Sorry Ed, but I am still a computer dinosaur. I do not have a Face Book account, nor do I intend to get one. I infrequently go onto my wife's FB account but only to see what our friends and relatives have posted. Yes, I'm missing out, but I find that trying to do a lot of new (for me) stuff on the computer is very stressful. Recent events have caused enough stress. I'm not going to go looking for more.

Boy I am tired of this crud, I do mostly fine during the day but I get wiped by the time I go home. Last night I felt like I had the flu, but I don't unless it was a mild case beat back by the flu shot. NIght before I got so tired about 7 I had to go to bed right then. I am kind of wiped this morning. I may go home and nap in a bit.

Good Morning All,

A toasty 21F this morning. The park behind the house looks one gigantic skating rink - ice from end to end. We only got around 4-5" of s**w but the sleet and rain on top made a mess yesterday morning. Chipped an inch of ice out of the driveway and about half an inch off the cars. At least the towns did a good job of clearing this time. Pack ice is no fun to drive on.

Ulrich - glad you had an enjoyable meal with Petra. Both cakes looked good.

MLC4 - sometimes the best thing you can do is just give in and sleep. I often sit in the office in the afternoon and have a quick nap.

Got the rest of my turnouts planted the last two days and ordered the rest of the sand tower, fuel island, etc I needed for the yard lead which will have all that. Found a map of the yard circa 1952 showing where it all went and the yard lead was the location of it all. Just need to find a small one track coal tower and I'm set. If I can't find what I want, I have an old mine building I can repurpose without too much trouble.

Off to Pa. tomorrow for services, 45 is way too early to go. He was a competitor of ours but the teams both got along well and I will represent the shop.

All for now - back to the shop.   Chow, J.R.

Dave, if it makes you feel better, I'm not a computer dinosaur, and I also avoid social media (facebook, twitter, etc) like the plague.  Sure you can find information there, but the bologna that seems to accompany it is ridiculous.  My wife was glued to her facebook account for about 10 years.  It started off all well and good, but by the end it was a constant source of frustration and stress.  An endless supply of things to get worked up about.  I finally convinced her to scale back tremendously and after doing so she even admitted how much better it is.  That stuff isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Good Afternoon!

A beautiful day - and not only because it´s Valentine´s Day today. We are blessed with lots of sunshine and a comfortable temperature of 55F! According to the weather guessers, it´ll stay that way over the weekend.

What´s Facebook? Whistling

I don´t know of such thing! I am a computer dinosaur myself and I have failed to see the benefit of joining an organization which makes a living of selling my data to ill-meaning businesses trying to sell me stuff I don´t need for money I don´t have. I don´t need thousands of followers - I am happy with the friends I have found here!

Seriously, I think Facebook is past its prime and so is Twitter. I think both will stay in business for some more years, fed by kids who don´t know better, but who will eventually see there is hardly a gain in that game.

I am proud to be a dinosaur!

Happy times!

I have a Facebook account, and I have only updated my "status" one time!

.

I look at it about once every six months or so, get bored in 10 minutes, then go back to building train models.

I just don't get the appeal.

Facebook is good for some things.  I belong to the My Rescued Coonhound group and that's always fun; it's a lot like the Diner.  It is also nice to keep up with friends and relatives that live in places I'm not likely to visit.  Some businesses are very active on facebook, but it's too much noise to follow a bunch of business.  If I have a question, then  I will look for a particular business.

I also belong to a group that is one of the banned subjects at this forum.  The curate things so heavily, that it is sometimes impossible to find a post you just made yourself.  Sort of like what happened to the Un  DCC thread, except it is supposedly done by algorithms and is much more pervasive.

Your friends & relatives who feel that have to get in your face with their politics, you learn to unfriend them.

For what it is worth, the demographic for Facebook has aged dramatically. What was once exclusively for college students (in the early days, you had to be a college student to get a Facebook account) has become the social hangout for the 30+ crowd. The young'uns mostly avoid FB opting instead for Instagram and Snapchat. Eventually they will loose their appeal and the young'uns will move on to the next thing. As for Twitter, it still going strong with no end in site. (Nuts, it seems to be the vehicle for any and all policy announcements.)

Good morning it is 0c and there is a big storm warning for this afternoon, 100km winds with snow and freezing rain. The whole West Coast of North America is being hit with a lot of moisture in one form or another. I think the power will go out with this one as there are so many trees covered in snow already strained and ready to topple.

Oh look a snow plow (5 days later)Laugh

I signed up for facebook for the sole purpose of talking to the kid in Ottawa. We chit chat on messenger throughout the day and video chat maybe two or three times a week. The FB video chat is very high quality and it makes having him so far away a little easier. I get a lot of friend request and decline them all as I don't want to see all the crap everyone is posting, as a result, my FB page is a whole lot of nothing. I get no adds on my page as I don't look for products on it.

Now, I also have a second FB page with a fictitious name on it and I use it to look at all the railroad pages both prototype and modeling. The amount of material on these sights is endless. The modeling and structures sights are incredible both in jaw-dropping works by some really talented people. Being Canadian there are some really goos C.P. sites and a bunch of Canadian Railroad modeling sites that are full of very knowledgable people. There are thousands of photos of layouts full of great ideas.

At first, I thought I would just be a spectator on these sites, but now participate on a rare occasion when I have questions and have been inundated with photos and what I would call expert advice. I go to the Rapido site and get involved with some of the cheeky chat with the guys from Rapido.

I get all the adds on my "fake name" site as I look at the manufacturers FB sites. If I see a good price on something I forward the page to my local guy and he will match it. Easy peasy. There is lots of private selling back and forth between people and I can zoom in right on Canadian Pacific stuff without wading through everything else. I have not bought anything that way but may if I see something I need.

FB is a great resource in so many ways and it is up to you to determine how you will use it. I have a lot of friends that ask me why I have not accepted their friend request and they are not the least bit offended when I tell them I only joined to talk to the kid.

I guess we're going to Costco, that means a Hotdog HMMMMM. That's only an extra ten minutes on the bike. I make sure I pay the bill by burning every bit of crap I eat or drink.Drinks The reason Costco sells their hotdogs so cheap is that they know you will be back to buy bigger jeans.Laugh They also give you a giant cup for the pop dispenser, I sure get funny looks when I only put 2" of rootbeer in the bottom of the cup.

Storms a brewin I had better go batten down the hatches.

All the best to all.

Brent

Howdy ..

Regarding FB: .... They have groups for model railroaders and also for rail fans. If not for that, I would not bother with FB.

I see there was a thread concerning another thread which had been modfied by moderators. It seems like moderators are confusing forum members when they do those things.

Recently, I was posting in my own thread. At the same time my thread was moved from the general section to the prototype section. Fewer members saw the thread after that. Soon, there were no more new comments in my thread. ... So, I question the wisdom of messing around with existing threads.

Nice pictures Lion.  The editing makes the rails look rusty, as in not used. The detailing on your layout is excellent! Whistling

Speaking of FB, I tried to check out what Brent posted early about different FB sites, and I got an error message.

I'll have to look around later.  I know there is endless info on FB, along with some other endless things that aren't appealing or appropiate, but it's about the same as forums, only I guess forums are monitored more.

EDIT:  Nope, still can't get into any of the formentioned groups, FB say there is something wrong.  They just figuring that out now?

Good Afternoon

Following some photographers on Flickr I noticed some shots of the Nickel Plate 757 being moved from The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania to Bellevue, Ohio on the NS.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/fan-t/albums/72157689677448693

Some folks at the Mad River and NKP museum must have some real pull with the NS to get this move accomplished. Last I knew it took an act or Congress to move any equipment with solid bearings these days.

https://bringback757.org/about/

Glad to see the locomotive back in Bellevue where, I understand, the Nickel Plate Road intended it to be when they donated it.

From N-S:

We are always looking toward the future but we never want to forget our past. This week, we are proud to assist in the preservation of a piece of history by transferring the Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive No. 757, the Berkshire, from the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania to the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania deserves much credit as they send this piece of history off to a new home. The Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum plans on beginning an immediate restoration.

I have a Face Book. When I'm napping I'll sometimes cover my face with an open book (or M-R Magazine) to shield the light from my eyes. One time I used a 1940 Car Builder's Cyclopedia and woke up with a sore neck.

Happy Valentine's Day Gift

I'm thinking it might be the MLPS Range Sensor on the trans in my truck, Ford has it for 100 bucks! I found a motorcraft one on eBay for 40 so I'll be going that route.

Facebook? I have an account, but I have zilcho idea how to use it.

How can you say talking to a bunch of Canadian Pacific modelers on FB is any more of a waste of time than talking to the people on here?
