hon30critter I guess the taste of the meat from a horse that had been working hard all its life was less than pleasant.
Pretty much the same reason there's all the hot spices used with meats from the warmer climates, too.
For me an eighteen-year-old Scotch will work to kill off anything that's "off" in the meat.
TF, are you talking about the bridge thread in the Prototype Information thread? Still there as far as I know. In the interest of sharing burning bridges I'll present this video.
The bridge was set fire by a 19 yr-old trying to get attention. CN rebuilt it and had trains running over it in less than a month! Heck, it takes me that long just to take the trash bins out!
Cheers, Ed
Track fiddlerThat's funny you say that Dave. I am so allergic to blue cheese, it'll wind me up in the hospital. I prefer a creamy horseradish sauce with my prime rib or any other steak
Yes, blue cheese is not for everybody. I can only take it in small amounts or I will become a very loose character as it were.
Horse radish I can do! I like the hot version that clears your sinuses. My grandmother wouldn't eat red meat without it. She grew up in England when horse meat was about all that the proletariat could afford (that and mutton - yuk.) I guess the taste of the meat from a horse that had been working hard all its life was less than pleasant. It had to be disguised.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
That's funny you say that Dave. I am so allergic to blue cheese, it'll wind me up in the hospital. I prefer a creamy horseradish sauce with my prime rib or any other steak thereof that's what I'm talking about.... and another big man hug for you Dave. I hope things are coming along for you and your family, I can't imagine. I do see you are a very positive man though. I can admire that. Happy New Year to you and yours. May many blessings follow you into the new year. I admire your strength

Evening folks,
TF my thread is still there, got the answers I needed too.
Went to the club, learned how to lay track, I'm pretty good at it and I would've done more than I did had we had more rail joiners.
In other news,
For new years Fox had Steve Harvey dressed in a purple cudoroy overcoat and a fedora, he looked hilarious to say the least!
Yesterday I renewed my MR and Classic Trains subscriptions, I decided not to renew Trains.
Well not much else going on, the guys at the club got a chuckle from the story about my friend Sarah telling me about her boyfriend one of my friends just said "Wow" multiple times
I'm glad I can get a laugh from it as well.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Track fiddler16 ounces of cheese, if you have a cholesterol problem you can't eat with TF
Interestingly there was an article in Saturday's Toronto Star which suggests your chicken enchiladas might just be good for you. Two Canadian doctors are advocating that the usual low fat diet that the Canadian Healthy Food Guide has been pushing for years is not all that healthy. They say that not having sufficient fat in your diet leads to health problems and weight gain. They are recommending that cheese, butter and steak etc. be regular parts of your diet. You do need to limit your carb intake.
A lot of recent research supports their theory. They have more than 5000 health professionals and people who have enjoyed the benefits of their diet recommendations and have signed a petition asking Health Canada to re-examine their diet guidelines.
https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2018/12/29/are-steak-and-cheese-healthy-doctors-group-says-canadas-food-guide-is-wrong-on-diet.html
So, grab the Roquefort and the filet mignon and enjoy!
By the way, if you have never tried a bit of sharp blue cheese with your steak, do it!
Good evening all.
Zoe - A RBF please. Thanks.
Dave - Belated condolences.
Steven SWP - Glad to hear you are feeling (somewhat at least) better.
Ken - Retail is getting tough, one place where I am, we just had our worst December ever. The other place is very slow right now as well.
Weather - Cold and wet today, after a very wet and very windy overnight. Chance of snow tonight.
W*^k - Very slow at both places.
Health front - Trying yet another asthma med, as nothing seems to be controlling it too well lately. While it's not "bad" per se, it's not being "good" either.
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

Whatever let's eat.
All afternoon I prepared my chicken enchiladas. If a Scotsman makes chicken enchiladas, he knows what's up.
This is after taking the homemade chicken broth adding all the onions, jalapenos and garlic and simmering for two hours until they're so soft you don't even know they're in there.
Then you introduce the slow rotisserie chicken and simmer another two hours, until you don't even need teeth to chew the chicken.
This is what it looks like before you put it in the oven.
This is what it looks like after it comes out of the oven.
When you can hold your hands on the side of the glass but not quite. That's when you cut it and serve it........ Help yourself please, Track Fiddler always shares his food
PS 16 ounces of cheese, if you have a cholesterol problem you can't eat with TF
Bon appetit, served on grandmother's plate with a robust mild hot sauce.... enjoy
I don't know if Steven's bridge thing was in the diner first, but when I seen it, it was in the Prototype Info. forum.

A thread disappeared here. Wood trestles and steel Truss by SWP.
I think a few of us may have crossed the line here without even realizing we did. I was the last poster and talked about a Trestle I grew up with.... and so on.
I think the talk of fire mixed with railroads is frowned upon here. It may fit into the forbidden vandalism Clause like graffiti I guess. I can respect that, but I wish I knew what I did
Well it sure freaked me out. I couldn't get back to the Diner for another 20 minutes and there wasn't even a line, you guys were all inside already.
Well Happy New Year you guys

West of Houston is the town of Brenham home of Blue Bell Ice Cream.
Here is a shot of the old Santa Fe freight house there, which served at one time as an Amtrak station. This structure has been refurbished and is part of a local theatre groups buildings. It sits on the original Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe tracks on the west side of downtown.
Texas had a law that all railroads had to be incorprated in Texas, So railroad companies started subsidiaries in Tx.
AT&SF was Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe,
SP was Texas and New Orleans
MP was Texas and Pacific.
Swinging banjo signal in Brenham. It is prob long gone.
Howdy Y'all,
So Texas it is. Brunhilda, set up a Lone Star for those who want one, and an RBF for everyone else. Does this mean we all have to have our hats and boots on when we post?
Those are all great pictures to start things off.
Last night we were watching a Perry Mason rerun (love that show), switched the channel just in time to see the ball drop and then went back to see the rest of Perry. Woke up this morning to watch the parade and did things around the house the rest of the day while the hockey game was on.
I've made one resolution this year, and that is to learn to sight read music. It will be a grind, but I'll have to resist any temptation to play the stuff I'm familiar with or just jam and concentrate on the notes. Once I get comfortable with that, the music will come. I already know how to do everything else, but then those days were a long time ago. It will probably take a couple of years.
Heres hoping everyone's 2019 is wonderful.
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Fireworks started promptly at 8:00 pm and continued on past midnight, with my dog, quivering in the closet.
NBC (I didn't watch) exceeded my predictions for New Years Eve, handly beating CNN coverage of Anderson Cooper doing shots of tequilla. (didn't watch him either)
NBC not only didn't show the ball dropping they had a public health discussion of a practice unknown to most physicians or women who you or I would dare to ask.
edit people are too easily offended and short on a sense of humor these days.
Beer Mash Cookies for everyone. This is a by product of homebrewing, crushed barley, ground up crushed barley, cinnimon, pecans. The picture looks a bit like weird ground beef.

Pretty Boring day today. At this point in my life I like boring. Did some running and that was about it.
Strang B&O Presdent Adam's Problem? This is the thrid time it has happened. Last night I used Decoder Pro on the programing track to change some sound levels. Got the Adams on the track, could not get it to take any comands?
Tonight I read the Basic CV's and some how address got set to 145? I swear I was only on the sound level page! Reworte the Bacis Page and she is draging 11 Heavy Pullman Coach and a Express Reffer like there is nothing behind it!

Good Evening, Crew! I spent time working on my LifeLike DL&W GP7. After disassembling one of the trucks, I cleaned all the upper gears that were partially gunked up with old grease from the manufacturer. I ordered new A-Line axle gears from Walthers for the Proto/Walthers that are listed as being for "Athearn 'Blue Box' ready-to-run models, and Life-Like Proto 2000 diesels." However, I found they are not exactly a direct replacement for the GP7 that I have. The axle diameter is .094" and the gear hole ID is about .087". I simply drilled out the axle gear hole with a bit that was a little larger than the .087" and compared the fit of the old axle gears and the new ones. Success! I also inspected the upper gears that mesh into the axle gears with my magnifying visor and found no signs of cracking, so I reassembled the truck with the new axle gears in place, Now I have to wait for delivery of my NMRA gauge so that I can check the wheel set before final assembly. I'll work on the next truck tomorrow. Happy New Year, everyone!

Moving South of Houston we have arrived on the island of Galveston.
Here we have the one time passenger service between Houston and Galveston , The Texas Limited Being pulled by UP 3593 Desert Storm
Happy New Year!
moelarrycurly4Here we start 2019 with a strike!, ok so this was in 1991 at the Southern Pacific Englewood yard.
I had a few un-gruntled employees at the car shop a while back. They were unhappy about the sharp pointy ends on the car axles being dangerous to work around.

The shop foreman brought donuts in and offered better protection on the pointy axles. Everyone was happy.

Thanks for the tour, MLC!
Apparently my long-term memory is still better than my short.
Thanks for the correction MLC and the good Railroad pics.
Track fiddler If my memory serves me right, I think it was MLC with the funny story of the dogs attacking the TV when they saw other dogs.

That was CN Charlie.
More of our tour. This was rail replacement on the ATSF Houston Sub. This picture was also featured on Trains.com "picture of the day" years back.
Lunch time!, Looks like it was sardines. Same guy that was cutting rail.
Rail train.
dumping tie plates.
Happy New Year everyone. Thanks for starting the Diner Dave.
Sometimes a vacation is restful, sometimes not so much. All I did was eat and sleep yesterday. I must have needed it.
Not a very exciting New Year's Eve, my poor Judy had to put in a 12-hour day her first day back, being that the hotel is so busy. Today she said her day is pretty normal so we will do our fun finger food for New Year's tonight.
If my memory serves me right, I think it was MLC with the funny story of the dogs attacking the TV when they saw other dogs or animals.
Pets do funny things sometimes. Nellie, our Springer Spaniel used to sleep on the foot of the bed. It was wintertime and this commercial was always on TV. I think it was Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
The frozen ice and snow on the wooden deck outside our bedroom window would make the same sound when someone walked on it as the commercial with the crunchy cereal.
Nellie would become super watchdog and just go booking out of the bedroom through the doggie door barking like crazy, it always made us laugh. She would come back with this confused look on her face
Welcome to Texas, my home state. I grew up just south of Houston.
Here we start 2019 with a strike!, ok so this was in 1991 at the Southern Pacific Englewood yard.
Here we are South of Houston in my hometown Pearland TX as 2 Santa Fe trains meet at Broadway St.
Meanwhile back in Houston an SP MOW train makes its way through the tracks at the old SP station site ( now an Amshack)
I will post more tours of Texas later on.
Sorry didn't notice that.

Steven, just a polite reminder that the forum rules do not permit the use of foul language including the use of symbols as a substitute for the words. One of your recent posts had to be edited by a moderator to remove the implied foul language. I guess that you didn't notice that or you wouldn't have done it again. Please be the gentleman that you are.
I'm sorry if I am being overbearing but I get upset when my friends break the rules.
I will pull up some pics in the morning, too late at night for technical wizardry!
Last night I actually got a full nights sleep! No stomach problems at all!
Some 2019 resolutions for me,
Most importantly is get myself a girl to go steady with,
Take the SAT and ACT,
Get a better job,
Learn to play the piano,
Start working out regularly,
And finally get some modeling done!
Ok enough resolutionizing!
Its two thousand nineteen already!?!?!?
Heres a good little story, today I was trying to find parking at the local fireworks stand, now this stand is actually a shack on the side of the main highway though the boonies here, and East Baton Rouge Parish forbids use of fireworks, so all the people from Zachary drive up the highway to this shack to get fireworks.
Anyways I'm going up a side street and I see this newer crew cab F250 with a girl driving stuck in the mud off the side of the road.
So I pull up and offer to help, strap my truck up a few tugs later the trucks out. Too bad her boyfriend was with her or I'd have gotten her name and number!
Got some fireworks after a long wait, we did some stupid stuff with those firecrackers on a single fuse, ya know the strands that are like 3 foot long and have like 300 firecrackers on them, tossed some in an old washing machine that was in the workshop, made the most racket you'll ever hear!
New modeling project for 2019,
I'm considering building a version of the Stanislaus River Bridge that was in MR a while back, only difference is the wooden deck trusses will be replaced with steel truss work.

Steven! Glad to hear that you are back amongst the living!
Title corrected. I had Jeffrey's name spelled wrong too.
By all means, post some pictures! I know nothing of Texas railroading so I'm hardly the right person to be running the Diner this month. You are right next door. Please take over!
