So TF posted tunnel portals and trees. I came back with tunnel portals, so now someone can pick an item out of my photo such as a steam loco, or flatcar or green boxcar or Ford truck or whatever. It is the new posters choice as to what he wants to match. yes, no?
Kind of a "I Spy Connection Junction"
Brent
"All of the world's problems are the result of the difference between how we think and how the world works."
So let me get this straight, after a match or similarity has been made once....then you pick something different from the last posted picture.
Then the next poster tries to determine what new item was pulled from that picture and tries to match or post a similarity to that...... and so on
Is that it
Yes, I remember there used to be a similar guess-the-connection thread here. It died long ago. The idea was, the OP posted two photos. Then people tried to guess what the two photos had in common. The one who guessed correctly then posted ONE photo that had something DIFFERENT in common with the last photo posted. Then people had to guess what that photo had in common with the previous one. Etc. etc.
For example:
ThirdPlayer SecondPlayer ThisIsTheOP Easy! Interlocking towers. Here's a tough one: Not so tough -- both locos are SD45s. Here's mine:
SecondPlayer ThisIsTheOP Easy! Interlocking towers. Here's a tough one:
ThisIsTheOP
Easy! Interlocking towers. Here's a tough one:
Not so tough -- both locos are SD45s. Here's mine:
And the answer to that one could either be "conifers" or "Northern Pacific" (note the third car). The person who correctly guessed that could post another picture with a wooden trestle, or a blue boxcar, or another GN car with the "Rocky" herald, etc. And so on.

If I'm understanding this thread correctly — I thought the idea was to present a new photo that has some kind of connection (as Dr. Wayne explains above) to the most recent, prior photo.
In that vein, I posted a photo which included a mile post. The previous photo shows a mile post in front of Wayne's box car.
Then Bear posted a photo that included a pick-up truck which could be seen in my photo.
Following Bear's photo I picked out some pine trees and a tunnel portal and posted a photo that showed both of these.
Now, looking at my photo of the two RDCs coming out of the tunnel I would imagine someone could show a photo of:
A signal or signal bridge; Other RDCs or self-propelled car; something with stripes on the nose; a double-track main line, a car manufactured by Budd, or made of stainless steel.
Hence, the connection.
I may have made a mistake by mentioning the tunnel and trees. I was simply showing my interpretation of the connection to Bear's photo. Maybe by leaving it un-stated, the viewer would have to guess what the connection is.
By posting additional photos of tunnel portals and trees this thread would really be not much different than the "Show Me Something" thread.
Or am I missing something?
Growing pains
I think we have the foundation of a good idea here.
Cheers! Ed
TF, a P/U means pick up truck.
How about some tunnel portals for the Emperor's new tunnel.
Connection Junction I see there is a second motion for that name. I like it, unless someone has a better idea or objects, maybe that's what it should be.
Some scratch built tunnel portals.
Some scratch built pine trees.
Did I see pine trees and a tunnel?

Connection Junction. I like it
Track fiddlerEd I zoomed in on the Caboose, it was a bit blurry, am I correct in thinking I read Pennsylvania.
Yes, or cabin car on the PRR and some railroads called a signal tower a cabin.
Yah takes yer pick!
"One difference between pessimists and optimists is that while pessimists are more often right, optimists have far more fun."
Ed I zoomed in on the Caboose, it was a bit blurry, am I correct in thinking I read Pennsylvania.
Brent what's a P/U.... I didn't see an outhouse
Now we're rollin! How about calling it "Connection Junction" that is sort of railroady.
I saw a P/U in the last photo.
You're all good Ed I just slapped a picture on because the thread was nothing but text for a while. I see you posted a good one too, I'm not familiar with it at all.
Well,
I was going to post a photo in response to Wayne's:
Cabin_x2_sm by Edmund, on Flickr
TWO hours is simply too soon to give someone time to respond.
Why do the photos have to be of box cars? I'm going to guess that TF's photo is a — box car.
Let me summarize what I thought the suggestion for this thread was.
We began with an A & WP XM box car with aluminum paint.
I responded with a Nickel Plate express car in aluminum paint (see the connection?)
Wayne responded with a Nickel Plate box car (NKP > NKP) hence the connection.
Wayne's photo has a mile post marker in it. I responded with a photo which ALSO included a mile post in it (there's the connection).
Now, someone can respond with a photo that may have a caboose, tower, track car, big shop building, pickup truck, the number 48 (as shown on the marker)... get the connection?
At least I think this is how the thread is supposed to work. Perhaps the OP can change the thread title to something like "Photo-Link" or "Find The Photo" since we already have "Show Me Something" which is similar, but different.
So... this is how I percieve the thread was supposed to go. IMHO, a 24 hour "timeout" period may be more realistic.
Does this make sense?
Cheers, Ed
Here lets start again. How about this box car, they come in red and green too
A very good friend created "the Photography Thread" and one reason why it works so well is that while it's railroad specific, it's not limited to just railfans, but also to modellers (and modelers, too). His collection of prototype photos likely numbers in the thousands (and date back quite a ways, too) but they're very well catalogued, and readily accessible.I do a fair amount of railfanning, and probably have a couple thousand photos, but they're mostly not very well organised. I often know that I have a suitable photo to make a contribution, but just as often can't find it.My model railroad photos are better organised (but still not great), but I can usually find a suitable photo for a reply. The wider accessability and the variables are what keeps the thread interesting.
Wayne
Well hey. I don't think my rules took off either, sooo
I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.
Lunch break
Are you kidding me Steven. No one has even got the first one down. How could we create two ?
There's nothing worse than a dead thread..... I think Wayne had some really easy to follow good rules.
New rule. If no one has posted a picture Within 2 hours it's free game to anyone to post..... this really isn't rocket science you know
Now there should be two versions of the thread, a prototype one, and a model one.
And as far as us freelancers, it'd have to be a prototype model, but road name is irrelevant, if I post a picture of a NWP 150 ton coal gon well all you'd have to do is post another coal gon, preferably a thrall gon.
Just throwing that out into the ring.
Steve
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
I'm liking the new ideas here. I think being able to post any railroad item to the thread would add more interest.
We would have to come up with a more relevant name for the thread next time it's posted.... That's it !..... "Railroad Relevance"
I couldn't find my Nickel Plate Road box car in my Scramble for work this morning.... someone else continue please
PS. Thanks JaBear...
...and anudder one...
+1 to Wayne's suggestion, which I would consider an enhancement or clarification of Track Fiddler's original idea.
I'm all for anything to get more photos posted.

The best such game I've seen in connection with trains is this one
It originated in another Forum and was brought along when Big Blue left the Zealot site.
While the rules aren't posted on the first page (I should probably correct that oversight) it's a very simple game, with lots of opportunities to make it more interesting and unpredictable.
Somebody starts it by posting a picture which they have taken that has some connection to railroading: could be a locomotive, a freight car, some track, a sign, such as a crossbuck, or even a highway truck owned by a railroad. The picture can be of a real train or a model.
The next participant (quickest on the draw gets first chance) has to post a picture somehow directly related to the first picture. F'rinstance, the first photo is a Conrail boxcar. The next photo could be another Conrail boxcar, or the same one (same car, but photo by a different person) or it could be anything Conrail or anything with the same number, or any boxcar. Each poster has the ability to steer the thread to suit his tastes (and photo collection).
There are a couple of guys on there with extensive photo collections and it's like watching a chess match sometimes, where there are successive photos of the same numbered diesel in different locales or times or where they run through 40% of some railroad's roster of GP40s, in numerical order. and anybody can jump in and post their favourite photo of some other road's GP40 or perhaps a boxcar with a number that matches the last GP40 posted.
Steam locomotives are generally accepted as all-matching, only because many were so unique and self-taken photos of steam rarer than current day equipment. They usually crop up as either roadname or number matches, but the game does encourage creativity. It's currently at 249 pages, with activity sometimes sporadic until somebody jumps in with a fresh idea and it's back in business for a while.
I like it because it lets you use your imagination and ingenuity to somehow match what's last been offered, but, at the same time, change the direction of the hunt.
Ok, so according to the "rules" my picture is not revelevant or in turn. Go ahead JaBear! Stage is yours. I cant wait to see this thread get on track
Again I am sorry my wife had a slate a mile long and kept me busy last night and today.
Looks like Ed had a picture of it and JaBear had complete detailed information about it. JaBear was the most right. I suppose it's his turn to post something if you guys still think this is going to work.
And if you want to make rules for this and make it work I'm all for it..... sorry I got so scarce
If no one dissapproves, I will submit my vote for specific rules:
1: You need only to guess
the general car type, the length
of
interm
odal well cars and boxcars (because those are pretty straightforward), and the railroad or company it belongs to. It is not necessary to guess the brand of the model
2: The person who posted the image must respond with yes or no within 12 hours of someone guessing, otherw
ise anyone else may start with a new image
3: The model cannot be a fictional one
4: The first person to guess correctly has the priviledge of posting the next picture. If they do not do so within 6 hours, second correct guesser get priviledge to post within six hours, and down the line
If there is enough interest, I can post this thread monthly...
That said, guess the railroad car!!!

P.S. Sorry the sentence at the top is chopped up and that I could post a picture directly.
Track Fiddler, I tried a similar kind of thread and that had a short shelf life as well.
You can only throw these things out there, some stick, some don't. It is always better to give it a shot and have a stinker than to have never tried at all.
Here's my feeble effort.

Definitely not up to the "Show Me Something" thread that took right off when introduced.
I suggested something in a thread once that did not garner even one response. It was such a great idea that I can't even remember what it was.
Track fiddler Sorry I had to run out abruptly yesterday as my wife surprised me with a jacuzzi hotel suite. I tried to delete the thread because I knew I wouldn't be around but couldn't figure it out. I don't think the thread will work anyway everybody knows what everything is. Maybe we should just pass this one by thanks

maxman Track fiddler because I knew I wouldn't be around but couldn't figure it out Okay, the question was "what are we supposed to figure out?" Now you say you don't know because you couldn't figure it out? How are we supposed to sleep at night?

Guess some things take prescident over others...
And obviously TF isn't worried about us because he's getting plenty of sleep, that's why he couldn't keep up with this thread
I'm sorry but this whole thread is more sideways than an ultralight with a crosswind, perhaps the "little elves" (aka the moderators) will come in and make this thread disappear overnight.
Track fiddlerbecause I knew I wouldn't be around but couldn't figure it out
Track fiddler...I'll be the first to start. It's simple. Post your favorite railroad car and let someone else guess it. If the guesser gets it right he posts his favorite railroad car....
I don't understand what we're supposed to be guessing: the spelled-out roadname represented by the reporting marks? The manufacturer of the car? What's been done to make the car unique? In what colours is it painted? How much the car weighs?
