The wife is probably more thankful that she didn't have to share the same air with you after a meal like that! Ick!

Is the Washington State Riesling the recommended wine with Hormel Chili dog sauce? Just in case I ever have to impress the sommelier.

[Sir, is you implyin' that the consumption of said delicasies would cause one to generate a most malodorous air resulting in in gastronomic expiration??

Eeehhhh, could be!

A Riesling would not pair as well with that combination as some other choices.  Whites are generally too light.  I would recommend a more full bodied red such as a Merlot or a Malbec.  A Cabernet would probably be the prime wine of choice here, but I for one have never liked Cabernets so I would still pair with a Merlot.  Now, I'm a Pinot Noir fan and I actually finished the last glass of a Sonoma Pinot with that combination.  A little light in body, but I don't care.  It worked for me.  So, to answer your question, i think you'd find the Riesling would not cut it, and to impress the Sommelier, I'd ask what he recommends, then go with the Merlot.

Ed thanks for letting me have a little fun with that!]

Afternoon All!

Hobby Front: Got the details on the 45 done. I am also in the process of replacing the horn on the 1200. Also in process on the wheel car. I also am planning to finally get the paint for the NP caboose ordered later in the week.

I also think I will finally get some pieces of the layout brought into town in June. (Asked for a 4-day weekend for that purpose. Already had the Sunday off. Hoping to get the Saturday as well.)

aaggghhh

I "glued" a couple layers of foam together. 2"+2"+1"

1st I used Loktite PL ### I forget the number but it's one of the recommended glues.  I didn't use enough weight on it and it didn't stick together at the edge.  Then I use what I had of another recommended silicon caulk and another caulk I had on hand.  The last caulk, "30 min to no longer tacky and 3 hours to use in a shower" is still tacky after 7 hours.

The trains are running for the first time since Christmas. It is amazing to me how much dust we have here in Arizona and how much accumulates on the tracks.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer and give Rick and Steven a RBF.

PRR Coach Wars! I was working of the Centfaun Coach when my wife asked me to walk Sparkie The Rocket Dog and put in her eye drops. I was fine with that. I left the Centfaun Coach on a flat section of foam and went and did the Honey Do's. Came back out to the Garage / Train Room and heard CRUNCH when I stepped behinde the desk. Ick!

Seems the Centfaun Coach righted it self like a Turtle on to the floor! Well the Good News Is The Roof Is Off! Big Smile Bad news is one of the trucks that was on the coach ends broke off? They looked like the ends where just glued on? In fact the whole coach looks like it was a kit bulit! All of the detail parts that broke off and there is a lot of them look like they where glued on?

Coach is not a total lost. I have a set of Athearn #90413 6 wheel tuucks I think I can make work? One day this coach will make it around the layout!

 Later, Ken

Good afternoon everyone. I made it back to Daytona Beach. I am here for the Florida Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) convention and training seminar.

.

The weather is awful. It rained all day and it is very windy. But... bad weather at the beach sure beats good weather in the office!

Hope that everyone has a good week.

Hello diners,

I was looking on ebay for some more IHC Pennsy FoM cars, I need 10 more for the consist, guy has a mixed set of IHC FoM cars from multiple releases so the colors don't match and some Rivarossi PRR cars, one of the IHC cars is a Duplex sleeper that matches the cars I have, sent the guy a message to see if he'd sell it on its own, no dice, oh well.

I'll be around later.

There *ARE* LIONS here, even if they have been hiding for a while.

Me see in MR that there is a Toy Train Exhibit in Eau Clare on the 7th  & 8th of July. LION PLANS TO ATTEND. Hope to see some MR peeps there.

Maybe I should put a stuffed LION on my shoulder so that visitors might recokgnize me.

After that I plan to go up to Duluth for a few nights.

Might then drive back by Lake Metagoshe, and Cartwright ND which has some old railroad bridges and tunnels. Impressive, but never used. Grape Norfin was going to move their mane lion south but then the fed came by and created Lake Sakakawea where GN wanted to build the rest of their tracks.

I'll show pictures when I get back. Of course that is two months from now.

Aghhh the computer ate my response.

Does Germany have a Mothers Day?  No reason to expect it would be on the same day all over the world.

My 89 yo mother is still around.  We had her over yesterday.  Her short term memory is all of about 2 minutes.  Like a broken record, the same conversation repeats, only for her, it is all new.  I ended the day feeling quite sad.

On the MR front, here is a Vintage Marklin layout that packs up into a box.

Good Morning!

I completely forgot about Mother´s Day. Shame on me, but I do not have a mother anymore, so I hope I may be excused.

I spend some time re-designing the benchwork/table to simplify and speed up the construction. Coming Friday will be the big date - the start of building my new, old tinplate layout!

Let´s continue on our tour and head southeast again, leaving Austria for the day and visit Budapest. Budapest  is the capital and the most populous city of Hungary, and one of the largest cities in the European Union. With an estimated 2016 population of 1,752,704 distributed over a land area of about 525 square kilometres (203 square miles), Budapest is also one of the most densely populated major cities in the EU. Budapest is both a city and county, and forms the centre of the Budapest metropolitan area, which has an area of 7,626 square kilometres (2,944 square miles) and a population of 3,303,786, comprising 33 percent of the population of Hungary.

During our stay, we will also take a ride on Budapest´s Children´s Railway, a 2 ft. narrow gauge line operated by teenagers. The railway dates back to the 1950´s and was built to provide a kind of juvenile internship to teenagers who wanted to join the railroad as an adult.

Enjoy!

Happy times!

Good evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a Washington State Riesling In honor of Mother's Day, please.

I'm "batching" it this weekend.  MOH is out of town.  Well, for dinner I did one of my experiments.  I call it "Chili Dog Enchiladas."  When you stop eating wheat, you get a little inventive with food.  However, when "batching" it, simplicity is the key.

Boil 2-3 hot dogs, heat a can of Chili (Hormel or equivalent).  Wrap boiled dogs in steamed corn tortillas.  pour heated Chili over dogs. Add favorite extra condiments and "viola"!  Chili dog enchiladas.

I think this calls for more exhaustive experimentation.  And, if you wash the plate within 2 or 3 days, the wife will be thankful she doesn't have to clean up empty pizza boxes after you and you can save some of that hard earned cash for MRR projects.

I'd call that win- win.

Big SmileBig Smile

Yes, this would have been a perfect day to try out my drill guides, but I did have a few things I needed to do.

Ed:  What type of locomotive is that what you're working on?

(edit) I'm sorry, Kevin, not Ed.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Good Morning Everyone!

Yet another beautiful day ahead of us, despite the weather guessers having predicted lots of rain. How wrong they are!

We are slowly coming to an end on our tour through Austria. Mind you, Austria is not a big country, but still offers plenty of places to visit and plenty of things to do.

Today will be a day of traveling by train, bus and bike. We will be heading southeast to Lake Neusiedl.

Lake Neusiedl (German: Neusiedler See) or Fertő (Hungarian: Fertő tó;) is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe, straddling the Austrian–Hungarian border. The lake covers 315 km2 (122 sq mi), of which 240 km2 (93 sq mi) is on the Austrian side and 75 km2 (29 sq mi) on the Hungarian side. The lake's drainage basin has an area of about 1,120 km2 (430 sq mi). From north to south, the lake is about 36 km (22 mi) long, and it is between 6 km (3 12 mi) and 12 km (7 12 mi) wide from east to west. On average, the lake's surface is 115.45 m (378.8 ft) above the Adriatic Sea and the lake is no more than 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) deep.

Enjoy!

Now that my Swiss layout is gone, it´s time to get going on the new one! Coming Friday, my friend Claus and yours truly will team up to build the table top, which will be attached to the cabinet by hinges, so I can flip it up to do the wiring.

I am all itchy to get started!

Happy times!

Good Evening Diners,

Johnboy, Great news about your eyes!

Another dry day here. We have been over a month without rain and none is forecast. We had the 3rd driest April on record and May is turning out the same. It was a balmy 72F here today so I managed to get more yard work done.

Ed, nice photos of the Orioles. We won't see them here for a few weeks. Our White Throat Sparrows have departed and so we are waiting for the next wave. Should be the warblers. We have seen a few but expect a lot more in the next few weeks.

I thought I had knocked off a rear view mirror on the car but luckily it was only the cover that popped off. It also pivots backwards which is a good thing. I was able to pop the cover back on. I had completely knocked off a mirror on the LeBaron we had a long time ago. Our garage door is very narrow and then there is a metal pillar supporting the roof over the front entrance so you have to be very careful backing out. I don't want to imagine what a replacement mirror would cost on an S80.

Well time for tea and tellie.

Good afternoon it is a warm sunny day on the West Coast, the pool had a 180Kgs of salt added this morning and should be ready to swim in by Monday.

Steven, looking forward to hearing Moon River, I use to sing that while Mom played the piano over and over when I was a wee lad.

Ed, those are great shots of the birds. Our hummingbirds stick around all year and we have the same feeders. A couple of years back we had an unusually harsh couple of weeks and found some of them in trouble just laying in the snow. The wife got them all back up and running over a couple of days and we filled the feeders up with high test.Laugh She also has a specialized degree in animal nutrition as well.

Johnboy, glad the surgery went well. Eye surgery is one we all really worry about for obvious reasons.

We were eating a late dinner Thursday and the kids' phone started buzzing like crazy. Apparently, they had a special screening of Deadpool2 in Vancouver for the crew that worked on the movie and V.I.P.s.

The first guy to call was the FX director (the guy in charge of all the explosions and stuff) he and the kid became friends during all the hurry up and waiting that goes on filming a movie. Then one of the stunt guys and a couple of others texted.

I have said the editors have not been kind to the kid at all so far in all the stuff he has done. Nine TV shows and four movies so far (I think) and we have only seen brief glimpses of him or an elbow or leg while he is standing next to the star of the show.

While working on Deadpool he got his own scene with one other guy that is a stunt guy. They spent about three hours filming different versions of the scene. The kid wasn't holding his breath it would make the cut, but it did. One of the assistant directors also texted the kid and said he probably got the most screen time of all the extras on the show. So the kid is in heaven. While it was just a job that pays really well and he was happy with that, he never really saw any results of what he had done as he always got cut in editing.

He got along well with Ryan Reynolds and he thinks that had something to do with it. I remember the day he came home really happy after working 17 hours one day, but it was the first day he blocked out stuff with Ryan and he was beaming. The movie opens Friday and even Mom is going and Mom never goes. I am really happy for him.

Lovin the tour Ulrich, though I am behind on the videos.

Time to ride the Deere again as the grass is growing like crazy.

All the best to all.

Hello, Folks

Another cold and rainy weekend here in NE Ohio. Good weather for camping out — in the layout room! Night before-last it was 41°F for a low!

The Orioles have taken over (well, they're sharing, actually) the Hummingbird feeders near the house this season.

 Oriole_1a by Edmund, on Flickr

What a beautiful display of bright orange!

Usually the Orioles stay near the pond where they have nectar, oranges and grape jelly to feed on but for some reason they seem to be staying closer to the house this season.

 Oriole_1 by Edmund, on Flickr

That's just fine with us. The more the merrier!

The Hummingbirds don't mind sharing.

Thanks for the great tours, Ulrich. Much appreciated.

Here's a recent modeling project that I finished up —

Afternoon all,

I got the O scale up and running at the museum. They had ripped out and reconfigured track and unhooked all of the feeder wire I had run. I had to add some and hook it back up.

Currently "spring cleaning" the screened in front porch.

Good Morning!

Today is an overcast day, with a chance of rain. While Hamburg was badly hit by a thunderstorm, which caused quite some damage, we stayed high and dry. Not a drop came down!

Let´s ride the Arlberg Railway today. The Arlberg Railway (German: Arlbergbahn), which connects the Austrian cities Innsbruck and Bludenz, is Austria's only east-west mountain railway. It is one of the highest standard gauge railways in Europe and the second highest in Austria, after the Brenner. The 135.7 km line is a highly problematic mountain railway, in part because it is threatened by avalanches, mudslides, rockfalls and floods. It is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and frequented by international trains, including the Orient Express.

The construction of the Arlberg Railway started on June 20, 1880, and proceeded at a faster pace than planned. Completion was originally not expected until the autumn of 1885, but already by May 29, 1883, the valley route from Innsbruck to Landeck in Tyrol was put into service.

On September 21, 1884 the entire stretch of the mountain railway was completed, including the then single-track, 10.25 kilometres (6.37 mi) long Arlbergtunnel. The construction claimed 92 lives. The costs were totaled 38,165,282 crowns. The Arlberg tunnel rises from St. Anton on a length of approximately 4 km with 2 ‰. The highest point is at 1310.926 m in kilometer 104.241 m. Then it falls to Langen am Arlberg at 15 ‰.

Join me in a cab ride along the line from Bludenz to Innsbruck!
