If we do the Flagstaff area I will sign up for some content. I guarantee it will not be as exhaustive as what Ulrich does with his travelog, but I can do something. I have even ridden the Grand Canyon railway, so there's that.

Excellent idea!

It´s nearing 3.30am in my neck of the woods, so it´s a little too early to move the Diner. I´ll do that in a few hours.

Happy times!

Hi, All! Not so hot after the T-Storms yesterday.

KEN: November 26,2016. 6:08 PM. Last day of Wisconsin's deer hunting season. Wife came home to me holding nearly an entire pack of Marlboro Silvers under the stream of water coming out of the kitchen sink.

I am quitting, I told her.

Last time I ever even had a puff.

You will quit when YOU WANT TO. No help. No gum. No patches. No Vapes.

I was 58. Smoked for 46 years. No lie.

If I can do it, YOU certainly can.

My 4 cents.

. . .I vote for Arizona. Flagstaff is a hotbed of webcam activity, there is a train to the Grand Canyon and a couple abandoned railroads.  Plus we have some Arizonians on board that know more than the rest of us.

I'll have a fresh garden salad.

Vaping was foisted on the public as safe, without any evidence at all.  Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor.  It makes blood vessels smaller.  Different mechanism, but so does diabetes.

Had my blood drawn at the hospital. I asked about one of the blood drawers who used to be a secretary 25 years ago.  She had a gastric bypass, since I saw her last and the said she lost a lot of weight.  She was closer to 400 than 300 so that would be a good thing.

I only bought a couple of albums until I became a college freshman, the year Led Zeppelin 2 came out.  There are lyrics on that album we best not discuss, although no worse than what you hear on cable news these days.

I vote for Arizona. Flagstaff is a hotbed of webcam activity, there is a train to the Grand Canyon and a couple abandoned railroads.  Plus we have some Arizonians on board that know more than the rest of us.

but I got to stop smoking

I did that - just put out my last cigarette a few years ago and that was all. Don´t try to fool yourself with any vapor thingy, chewing gum or whatever - just quit and forget about it. All you need is to have your mind set on quitting!

June location - there is no sense in chosing a location if someone is not willing to go through the trouble of compiling info on it and sharing it with us. It takes some effort and, frankly, I won´t be doing this every month. So here is my suggestion - anyone who comes up with an idea on a location should be prepared to take us on a guided tour. It doesn´t have to be as extensive as I did in the past, but should give us an overview on where we are, what´s going on there and what trains we can expect to see.

If that is asking too much, we have the option of doing what we did in previous years - call the switcher and move the Diner to a new track.

Happy times!

Some cream and sugar with a little coffee in it please?

I've spent several days  redoing my backdrops, around the room. I used sheet rock and got it all smooth, and rounded in the corners using slices out of mailing tubes and drywall tape so there are no sharp inside corners.

Ready to paint; I just have to open the door to vent to, and draw warm air from the great outdoors. Except, it's cool and raining. It'll have to wait.  I also went all through the room vacuuming white dust from drywall and sanding.

Song Lyrics?

My brother, 12 at the time insisted "Dont fear the reaper", was "Don't fear the reefer"

Mom thought "More than a woman" was "Bald headed woman" (Tavares cover)

I thought Eagles lyrics "He had a nasty disposition as a cru-ell-dude," was "As the crew well knew"

Another kid, and this is a favorite, had Rolling Stones "I'll never be-  your beast of burden", down as "I'll never leave- your pizza burnin' "

Hmmm.Ya know, pizza sounds good on a rainy day.  "Flo?"

Hello diners,

Australia would be pretty cool too for next month's diner.

Ken, admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery, good luck finding a alternative! Hope your health improves, I had a infected ingrown toenail, finally went to a doctor for it, it had become abscessed and when the doc cut it out the nail that was in there was a half centimeter deep at least.

I'll be back later, got some grass to mow!

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer please and give Rick and Steven what they like.

Got Sues Car Back. She is now $225.00 poorer. Cost $125.00 to fix the blower motor and I asked Bob to check the windsheild warsher fuse. Well I am a little PO'ed, I asked him to check the fuse. Well fuse was OK so he went a little farer? He checked the pump and it was bad, so he replaced it. Pump was only $20.00 but he had to pull a lot of stuff to get to the pump. I looked and did not want any thing to do with it. Guess I should have said "Check The Fuse Only." So that added $120.00 to the bill. I am not real up set yet, she said she will pay the bill. Bob let me float the bill with only $50.00 down, I have never stiffed him. We will she what she does.

 Health Front. Sigh Not good.

1 The Right Great Toe Looks Infected again. It is red around the callus and looks like a active ulcer to me. I am going to a local ER Room Friday and try to get the VA to pay for it. Last time I went to the VA ER with a foot ulcer the Doctor had no idea what they where looking at. I was asked "Why are you hear?". Bang Head

2 Please don't tell me what to do on this subect please, but I got to stop smoking. I hate being told what to do, one of the reason I was not a Lifer in the Army and tried to all wise be the boss.

I am starting to feel short of breath, not awfull but not normal. A1C has been good (reason I thought I have been feeling bad and tired) and lost around 30 pounds! Yet I still do not feel like doing anything. Even Fun Stuff.

Thing about trying the Vapor Thing. Talked with a guy I know at Shop and Save and he did sy he felt better using the Vapor Thing. I all so know I got to get off nictone!

PRR Coach Wars, Lake Merrett Coach 1 Ken 0.Laugh Could not even make it down a straight section with open turnouts! Going to check the wheels first to make sure they are in gauge and then go from there.

ATF On The Rails! I swear ATF works! The Mighty B&O F7's started satalling on a open turnout. Few drops of ATF before the turnout and few higher speed runs? Running great again! Big Smile

 Later Ken

PS,I have cut back around 50% smoking.

Steven Otte
From Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"

.

I cannot even begin to tell you how badly me and my friends botched these lyrics.

.

The other one that I misheard so badly was the very first line of AC/DC's Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution.

.

I would have sworn it was "Heavenly jezebels are hanging from my guitar", but it turns out the real lyrics were "Heavy decibels are playing on my guitar".

.

I like my version so much better.

.

In more modern songs:

.

In the chrous of Iggy Azalea's Fancy I thought Charlie XCX sang "We're in the fast lane from our heads to our toes you know, but she actually says "We're in the fast lane from L.A. to Tokyo", which makes no sense. You can't drive from L.A. to Tokyo!

.

In Taylor Swift's Blank Space she sings "I've got a long list of ex lovers", but I heard "I get along with Starbuck's lovers". I liked that, because I also love Starbuck's. Oh well.

. . .Any suggestions where we will be next month?

How about some place exotic, like Morocco?

Very exotic indeed, and - for an African state, quite a lot of railroad action. I hardly know a thing about that country, so if someone would jump in for me and invites us to a ride on the Marrakesh Express, I´d be happy!

A little lonesome in here! Chloe, just a mug load of coffee for me, please!

Not far from my place is a nursery specializing in transplanting tall, old trees. Getting one of those trees can easily run up to the cost of a of a loaded premium brand midsize car.

Well, it was not this nursery, but Heki who supplied the first green on my layout, and delivery was made by DHL and not a special load transport business.

A little green does make a difference!

btW9EfH.jpg

ElprIfM.jpg

JKcFSYp.jpg

The tree is not yet permanently fixed, just held in place by a short length of double-sided sticky tape.

Any suggestions where we will be next month?

Dave,

all the brands you have mentioned have a number of quality issues due to "over-engineering". The cost of ownership has risen to an astronomical level for that reason!

If you compare a Mercedes made in the early 1960s (the period my trains were made), it was a rather primitive, but rugged vehicle, which was good for up to a million miles! A modern Mercedes is loaded with absolutely unnecessary gadgets, which require frequent maintenance and are subject to failure. It´s like comparing a 1960 brass loco with an open frame Pittman motor with a DCC & Sound equipped BLI loco.

Not everything technically possible makes a better product.

Happy times!

Good old German engineering, like the used to do, but that is history by now.

Ulrich!

You paint with a very broad brush. Porshe, BMW and Mercedes seem to be making very good use of 'German engineering' these days!

I think Marklin should be forgiven for trying to make their products more profitable.

FWIW, I think the old stuff is beautiful. Maybe some day I will resurrect my old (and very dusty) Marx O scale set.

My 2 Cents

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Ulrich While it is not my cup of tea, good looking layout. I like the buliding's and the Engines and Rolling stock look's good. Don't care for the track, but I know it is easy to work with.

Ken - I am just glad I don´t get kicked out of this place and sent over to the CTT Coffee Pot! It´s a toy layout, partly in the guise of a "real" one. I agree on the track. It dates back to the year 1935 and the only major change made on the design was the introduction of stud contacts instead of a "solid" third rail. People have successfully camouflaged the tin character of it, but I´d like to keep it authentic. Marklin´s newer track with its plastic roadbed, IMHO, looks even worse, so that was not an option for me.

One of the intriguing features of the old stuff is its fantastice reliability and ease of maintenance. All you need to disassemble the loco is a small screwdriver. Everything more or less drops into place. Good old German engineering, like it used to be, but that is history by now.

Good evening diners,

Not much going on, mowed some grass this evening, the mower is fixed, had to put two bolts by the deck mounts to keep it from coming loose.

Well not much going on so goodnight everyone!

Work / Reding Front. Well the good news is I finshed another Clive Cullser Book. It was a NUMA File Kirk Austion book called Madusa. I am running out of Clives Books. I think this was around the 45th book of his. Sad thing I was the only person in the store today. Sigh

Ulrich ... Your Marklin continues to look like loads of fun. It sounds like you have a dishonest neighbor

Garry - you couldn´t be more right, on both accounts. I am really enjoying myself building this little layout, where everything is against the rulebook, but ever feels so right! And, yes, our neighbor is not an honest guy at all, but he is not the only one in this neighborhood. You know, we live in this Gulag not by own choice.

Henry - nice video! It was interesting to see Mr. Kruckenberg´s "Schienenzeppelin" in it. It was an expeimental rail car, powered by a WW I airplane motor, which reached a top speed of 140mph, which was quite an achievement in 1931. It never went into regular service, as no insurance company would sign for it and became obsolete, when the highspeed Diesel rail cars of the "Flying Hamburger" were inaugurated a year later.

Good Morning to everyone - it´s 4.45am and I am enjoying the crisp morning air and the first cup of coffee of the day!

Happy times!

My laptop died the black screen of death.  It is still in warranty, but I have the hassle of sending it in and waiting.

My back kept me up last night but is feeling better now.  Went with the wife to see the radiation doc.  After a week she has some redness, like a sunburn.  That may or may not progress to blisters.

I'm going to use some dowels to align my two modules together, then lay some cork and track and figure out bridge abutment height, but I didn't even go downstairs today.

Here is a collection of wierd stuff, old locos, locos through station walls, a propeller driven loco, and some cool old stuff.

I finally had the Mexican Fan Palm tree rermoved that had been leaning towards the driveway since Hurricane Irma came through last year.

.

The tree guys were finally hungry for work again, and prices came down to where they should be.

.

Thank heavens it never fell on the house!

Good Morning,

We just had a bad thunderstorm with lots of water pouring down. At last it cooled off a little and I feel a little more comfortable than in the previous days.

The day started early after a hot night with no sleep. In my age, a hot night means it´s too warm to sleep properly Smile, Wink & Grin

Got busy finishing building # 4, wihich now found it´s place on the layout.

Here are some pictures:

I love when a plan comes together!

Talking of bad repairs and used cars, our rather dimwhitted neighbor bought a used Golf R+, that´s the one with the 200+hp. Cars like this are usuall fairly beaten up, but his looked OK - until the paint started to fall off in rather thick flakes. He accused us of having slammed our car door into his dear vehicle, which of course was not the case. I called my insurance to send someone over to check the damage and it turned out that the car had been involved in a serious accident and the damage had not been repaired properly. The insurance fellow had some strong words for our neighbor, trying to defraud the insurance company. Needless to say we are not on talking terms with that neighbor.

Lunchtime is coming up quickly now and I do have to work down my HD list before I can eat, so CUL, folks!

Happy times!

Rick and Dave The  magnet trick really does not work these days. With cars and trucks usiug aluminum and plastic body parts, well the magnet will not stick to it. Plus there are other dirty tricks! When I was going to auto body school one of the tearchers asked me to help at his house to do some used car lot cars. He used Metal Tape, and ground up some sheet metal in the filler with a grinder. To top it off, he added some Metal Flake in the primer! I be dang, a magnet would stick to the repair.

Hi Ken:

That's really deceptive!

I'm so glad I'm past the days of having to buy used cars because that's all I could afford. I just hope that I am smart enough that when our current 2014 Odyssey starts to become a money pit I will dump it. I have made the mistake with more than one vehicle of thinking that I could get some more life out of them by spending money on repairs when I should have sold them off.DunceBang HeadLaugh

Evening diners,

Went to the club today, Ben looked at Matts RSD15 it does NOT have SDDS (Sudden Decoder Death Syndrome) it is back alive and among the living.

Op session is Saturday, we'll try our best with the crew we've got, the club has a membership issue we need about a dozen more members, at least, to be both financially stable and operational in both running trains and doing necessary rebuilds to the layout.

Well goodnight folks!

Work Front Pretty decent day with $2818.00 in written sales. One for $1900.00 is a done deal and would have been a good $135.00 in spiff money. But because of taking SS at age 62 no spiff's for me! Crying But I have no worries about making the house payment either! Big Smile

I missed the discussion of misheard song lyrics, or "mondegreens" as they're called... but I still would like to share one of my own.

From Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" (lyrics in question at 0:43)

"On we sweep with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore"

My version:

"Only sleeping, 'specially now
I wanna go where these directions show"

Good Afternoon,

A lot of thunder out there right now but only a few drops of rain so far. Hope there is more.

Ulrich, that is a really nice little layout you are building and I can see that it is a lot of fun.

Well think I might read a book I ordered that was delivered last week. It is Speed Graphics and Steam 1957 by Ian Wilson. Another of his wonderful books about steam in Ontario.

Yesterday I heard Riders On the Storm by the Doors on the radio. It sure brought back a lot of memories about the summer of '71. I had just moved to Barrie, ON to start my first real job with GE after university. I find that song haunting.

I think now that Ulrich is back, location selection is his forte.

I´d happily let someone else do the honors!

It´s too hot to sleep and too noisy to keep a window open! I guess I am in for another sleepless night!

Grrrr!

Happy times!
