Morning everyone.

Ive more applications in, and this weekend is the proverbial (straw that broke the camel back".  retail work, and ive had enough.

I only get 28 hours a week, and no employee benefits. I've been there four years and only make 7.65 an hour. i cashier, so I get all the "wonderful people" and get blamer for everything. I even had a guy intentionally run into me with his shoulder to my neck. He swore me out, and I get yelled at for it by management, even though I applogized and walked away from a situation like a grown adult.

anyway, i got my schedule for this week... I work every day this Memorial Day weekend, includinf memorial Day, on the busiest register.  But since our schedule goes Sunday through Saturday, it's 3 days, then 2 days for the next week. oh, you may ask about holiday pay... guess what? No holiday pay either. I get to work myself to a panic attack again... for 7.65.  None of the other cashiers get this either, just me getting to work every holiday except for Easter.

Yeah, I try not to complain, but this has pusher me beyond all reason.  ive worl experience in manufacturing, I've done manual labor....I'll go somewhere where I am paid properly.

Abyway,

train related- we started working on improving our club modules.

Music- I played at a local coffee shop "open mic night"

Good Morning, Everyone!

Zoe, make that s strong coffee in my Marklin mug, please! I need an eye opener. Slowly, the temperature in our apartment is rising  to an uncomfortable level, which makes sleeping difficult for me! The joys of not having A/C - which we normally don´t really need.

Again, I was up early this morning - just to make best use of the morning fresh air to do som work on my train set before it gets to hot. The weatherman forecasts 31°C for today - way too much for the plar bear blood in me!

The last three catenary masts have now been placed on the layout and the overhead wire is strung. I am short of 5 masts, but I will be meeting a bloke selling used Märklin stuff next week. I hope to buy the masts and the missing two signals, which is all I need to complete the "hardware" of this layout.

Today´s pictures, showing the layout from the "wrong" side of the railroad tracks:

JyIS2wS.jpg

ibCe5Pr.jpg

6fnls0C.jpg

dsWWGoN.jpg

Some layout infos - if you are interested:

  • Size: 5`3´by 2"4"
  • Minimum radius: 11 1/2"
  • Frog angle: 30 deg.

I can see some folks more than just frowning at me now!

Brent - it must be a rather odd feeling seeing your own offspring in a Hollywood blockbuster movie. This is a world so far away from my own, but, honestly, I have no desire to come closer to it.

Make it a great day!

Happy times!

Good afternoon all, it was another beautiful day on the Pacific Rim. It has been two months since we have had any rain and it looks like another bad fire season may soon be upon us. The local airport is where there are rows and rows of water bombers parked all winter and they started heading out about a week ago to their assigned areas.

Took the kid to Vancouver this morning so he could write his final exam that he got deferred so he could do a movie. After the exam, he was meeting with a bunch of his movie pals to go see Deadpool 2 again and then go for dinner. He has had over a hundred people contact him on Facebook and through E-Mail asking if he was in Deadpool because they saw him.

We saw Deadpool last Saturday and finally, he got some good screen time. Seeing my 25-foot high kid charge at me in a closeup in IMAX is strange, to say the least. I am not sure what to think about seeing him in a big-time movie, It certainly changes the way you view it, but I don't know how.

He is going to a meeting with a big-time agency on Monday, they asked him for the meeting even though he told them he would be going back to Ottawa in September to University. He thinks they want him for "stand in" work, that pays even better than being an extra. They want to talk to him because "he gets it" they said, he seems to have a natural ability to do what they want the first time and that saves them a ton of money on reshoots.

I have also been wondering where V8-Vega is, along with a few others. Some of the characters over the years could surely have had a sitcom made of their daily lives.

May be flying back to Winnipeg in the near future. My Cousin that I was close to developed Alzheimers and went from normal to as bad as it gets in only 10 months. Quite a shocker, he is a great guy that traveled the world and had some incredible adventures. He taught advanced scuba including ice diving in those frozen Manitoba lakes. They don't think he will be with us much longer.Sad

Going to the Whitecaps game (soccer) with the kid tomorrow in Vancouver. He knows some of the sports media through hockey so may meet up with them for a quick beer at some point and then home to a house full for dinner. It will be fun, we didn't get to any Canuck games together this past season as he wasn't here, I really missed those.

Kid just messaged me asking if I can put money on his transit card.

KIDS PHOOEY!Laugh

Guess I had better go do it.

All the best to all.

Edit; forgot to add this earlier.

Stick out tongue I wrote a spoof post on Facebook today about closing down the State of Utah to railfans in May 2019. All these rumors of "massive crowds" for the Golden Spike and UP 4014 stuff had me a bit spooked. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=481871885565652&id=210353072717536&comment_id=481881068898067&reply_comment_id=481887825564058&notif_id=1527293129538846&notif_t=feed_comment

Hi Diners,

Just a quick note.

Some folks have posted misquoted lyrics.

Heres one:

Down in yohee where the surfers all go,...

Its Doheney, not "yohee".  It was a surf spot before it was made into a small boat harbor.

Have a great Memorial weekend!

Less is more,...more or less!

Steven On the Blue Box engines, is the body of the engine what you are after? Reason I ask as a rule of thumb the motors draw to much power for DCC use.

?? I have somewhere north of 20 BB engines of various age. All have been converted to DCC with no issues? They sound like old Maytags, but that's part of the reason I LOVE them. They are strong pullers, and most give me less headaches than my higher buck engines. My guy that installs all my decoders loves them too, for the relatively easy install. LED lights replace the stock bulbs. As i understand it that's the big energy draw.

My 2 cents.

Hello diners,

Ken, I'm after some SDs, GPs, and DDs. I want to get them running with DCC and sound, new motors, higher weightings, and eventually I'll paint them for my railroad.

Did not do much of anything today. Guess I was spent from what I did Thursday.

Bessemer Front Cut the volume back some and sounds much better. It was at 128 from the factory, I now have it at 80 and not over powering the sound of the Mighty CB&Q's F7's. Dang it is a good sounding engine!

. . .Ride On Road,  How is the mileage building up on the bike this year ?  Must be early rides again as it will be getting hotter eveyday. . .

Thanks for asking! I have logged 817 miles year-to-date. Not as many miles as I had hoped for by this time of the year--life seems to get in the way--but I take solace in the thought that 817>0.

Case in point, my son and his family are coming to visit next week. (I know, we should visit Idaho in May, not them coming to Arizona, but what are you going to do.) To get ready for their visit, and to give the grandkids a place to sleep, I put down about 150 sqft of laminate flooring yesterday, thus no ride yesterday. Today I can barely move so no ride today. Hopefully tomorrow. The rides are at daybreak to beat the heat. In a couple of weeks, it will be hot even then.

Ulrich .... The Marklin trains look like fun. I like the easy-to-install catenary wires.

All it takes is just a little care to get it up!

Today, for the first time in my 55 years as a model railroader, my electric locos get the juice from where the prototype does - from the wires above!

If I had a second power pack I could now run two engines independently on the same track!

Happy times!

It is good to see some old regulars here this evening ..... Terry, Bill T, and JohnBoy .... Feel free to visit more often ...

Happy Model Railroading...

I second that motion!

Good Morning!

Got an early start this morning, as the sun rises before 5am in my neck of the woods at this time of the year. II made best use of the cool early morning air by doing some hot work - like soldering two pieces of overhead wire that wouldn´t hold. The job is done and the test run has been satisfactorily completed!

My next job is tio get my table saw going - cutting two slots into the depot´s base for the catenary masts. This will have to wait a little - it´s too early to make that kind of noise!

Have a great one!

Happy times!

Whistling

Good Evening Gang,

A double RBF for me girls, it is warm here too.    Thanks much.

Hi there Bill Tidler, it is great to hear from you again. You make it feel like old times here. Missed your entries and pictures. Please stay tuned in to the Diner here.

Gary, glad you got to ride the dinner train in Branson.  We rode it about 8 years ago when we were visiting Springfield quite often while our youngest Son was getting his Masters at Missouri State. We also rode the Seminole Dinner train out of Fort Myers back in 2005.Also several others here in Canada.

Got my hearing aides tuned up today, I get a new feeding tube installed next Tuesday and then back to Saskatoon for a follow up on my eye operation on the 31. Busy times in your old age it seems.

Ulrich, anything you do looks professioal. I am so glad you are back with us and am following the new build with great interst. But you can have the overhead wires, they are not for me, but they do look neat.

Jimmy Braun,  Will there be a trip to Manitoba this year or not. Lots of fires in the north again this year. How did the porch turn out on the rebuild.

Ride On Road,  How is the mileage building up on the bike this year ?  Must be early rides again as it will be getting hotter eveyday.

Has anyone heard from V8-Vega he just seemed to dissapear after the winter holidays.  Sure hope he is alright.

I am waiting to get to Billings to pick up some things I ordered and had shipped to my Son as I need them to proceed with a bunch of retaining walls I must build now.  If I wasn't so rushed for time I should stop in and give Ferry Kid a hand on getting set up in town at Miles City as I go by. Sure hope it goes well for you and that you are back up and running sooner that you think.

Ken, and if you are still having fun,,,, then you are doing it right.

Well, night all and sweet railroad dreams too, without sound I hope.

Johnboy out.....................till next time.

Misunderstood lyrics?

Yeah I've had a few over the years, I typically clear it up by Googling the lyrics.

Here's some music, this song seems right for today, don't ask why.

Song lyrics I've misheard:

Jimi. Scuze me while I kiss this guy.

Elton John. She has electric b**bs.

Evening diners,

Ken if you are inclined to use a internal combustion engine may I suggest a 2 stroke Toro brand weedeater, I swapped the string out for a Rhino Tuff Brush cutter head, the kit is 15 or so bucks, and each new set of blades is about 10, a pack of blades will last a tank of gas, I use the TruFuel to avoid the mixing, it's about 10 a bottle and you get two fill ups.

Still eyeing some Athearn BB I'll get more serious about buying when I've got my business running.

I'll be back in later.

 Afternoon Fellow Yard Workers!

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer please and give Rick and Steven what they like.

Felt a lot better today. Got the front and rear yard cut, weed wacked the rear yard and it was bad. Cut some vines the wife hates and did the dishes for her while she was away. She was visting with Debbie one of her friends.

New Weed Wacker Bought a Black and Decker 20 V Lithium Battery one for $79.99 from Home Depote. Hmm Hmm Not sure if I like it. I think the main thing it has just one cutting line. My old $29.99 that I have to plug in has two lines and it cut better.

PRR Coach Wars Centfaun coach is still being a pain! Just caused it's second derailment in a row! Confused Odd part, it had been working fine for about a week! Think it is time for new trucks.

Good Afternoon!

Just stopping by for an RBF - it´s too hot for coffee in my neck of the woods. According to the weather guessers, this May will go down in history as the hottest ever recorded! Tomorrow, we expect to surpass the 30°C mark! Too hot for me!

Ken - tinplate trains are just straight forward fun and nothing else. While not accurate in terms of scale and detail, especially the Marklin HO trains of the good old days give you that railroading feel we enjoyed in our childhood - no frills, but lots of bells and whistles! Add to that the incredible reliability and simplicity and it all adds up to what we all are aiming for! Only my way is a different one!

HO tinplate trains are maybe not so common in the US, but O gauge trains are. Norm Charbonneau has created a masterpiece, which displays much of the same atmosphere of what I am aiming for.

Little progress today, as the missing parts finally arrived!

The station now has a platform with a roof over it and a couple of benches for the elderly to sit down:

jDz7swM.jpg

lDPYEwZ.jpg

Progress has been made stringing the overhead "wires"

AvF3NzW.jpg

5Y6mthy.jpg

In the meantime, the last two gaps have been bridged and the for the first time in my railway modelling life, I can run my engine with the pantos up!

w1VjPY1.jpg

4ss6uEY.jpg?1

iAKc786.jpg

I am running short of masts to continue putting the catenary up, so work will pause a little. I´ll enjoying running my trains in the meantime!

I am pondering to change the setting of this layout from a rather rural atmosphere to a little more urban character.

What do think of this row of houses behind the station?

Faller is offering so-called "action sets", which are a steal! The above set includes lighting and sells for € 31 + shipping!

Good morning ...

Mike - Water Level Route .... Welcome to the DIner, and your thoughts are appreciated.

Tinplate is always intriguing. When I look at the Classic Toy Trains forum, they always have interesting coversations going on. There are some very good people particpating in their Coffee Pot which is similar to our Diner. I communicated with some of them when Jeffrey was in the hospital before he died. Jeff particpated in a lot of forums, and I had voluteered to Jeff before he went in the hospital to communicate his medical status to other forum members. Jeff definately had a lot of good freinds in the forums.

I have a few Lionel trains which are used under the Christmas tree.

Sure don't have to have a great layout to enjoy trains in my case. Part of the layout looks fairly good. Most of it looks like a 10 year got $10.000 and bought stuff and bulit the layout him self with no adult help. Yet I enjoy the heck out of it.

Same here.  (What parts have scenery anyway)  Still, I just think there is something disarming about tinplate / toy trains.  I've seen too many times where someone gives up doing something because they see someone elses superior work and thinks "I can't do that, so what's the point?" Not just talking about MRR here either.  When it comes to the tinplate stuff, there's typically a lot of action, operating accessories, and nothing terribly difficult to attain.  My first layouts, although using HO scale stuff, were more of a mix of the two styles and were built using a very small hammer and a push drill, like Ulrich suggests.  Tons of fun!

Ulrich, I love the idea you are pursuing.  Look forward to updates.

Flo, give the gang a round of Coffee on me!  It's too early for me for anything else!

Evening All!!

Mentioning GP30s, I have a Bacthearn one. (For those who haven't run across my nomenclature before, a Bacthearn is a kitbash between a Bachmann shell and an Athearn drive unit.) That was the result of trolling eBay one day when I was bored. Bought a shell that Kader, Bachmann's parent company, released to Bev-Bel for painting to BN. Had to find a donor unit as the original handrails were not usable.

Hobby Front: Part 2 of the layout move. This time, it included the Dremel tool, the Athearn grain hoppers, all the long passenger cars, five diesels (2 F7As, a F7B and two GP20s), three switch engines (2 SW7s and the SW1), the idler cars for the car ferry dock, a misc reefer car, the three passenger cabooses and my tack hammer. (What fit in my hands and Mom's car.)

Not much going on.

I was looking at some old BB locomotives on eBay, does anyone know if they made a DD40 (DD35A) with a more prototypical hood?

Well I'll be around.

A thought on this that I don't recall having been mentioned yet is that they are attainable by basically anyone.

How true - all you need to know is how to handle a drill and a screwdriver, the rest is "plug & play".

I have often wondered what makes those actually rather crude looking train sets so attractive. I have yet to meet the person who is not fascinated by old tinplate trains, be it in O scale or HO scale. Tinplate trains are crude, lack detail, are not true to scale, so what is it then?

A thought on this that I don't recall having been mentioned yet is that they are attainable by basically anyone.  While the highly detailed and realistic layouts are admired by all and something many strive to achieve, they can be a little discouraging in that one may not have (or think they have) the skills and/or time to create a layout to such quality.  The tinplate level layouts, on the other hand, don't have that goal.  They are simply to be what model trains should be.  Fun!  Not saying the highly detailed layouts aren't fun.  Just not as easily attainable.
