Afternoon diners,

Tomorrow is Revenge of the Fifth.

Got the parts for the mower, well not the right parts but the "right" parts to get it running, and run it did, until the rear deck mount came off again and had to be rewelded, while we had the deck off I noticed the center spindle needed a new bearing and the blades looked like something ate them, so I swapped the blades for some used ones we had that were in better shape and went to replace the bearing, the bearing core WOULD NOT COME OFF! had to use the bench girder to get enough off to break it loose, put everything back together, went to bolt the drive pulley back, the nut went halfway on and seized! Tried for 5/10 minutes to break it loose, wouldn't come loose, couldn't tighten it further and it wasn't tight enough to just roll with it, I left it soaking in oil to try to loosen it up.

We're considering just buying a whole new deck to get it running, that's the source of all the trouble the cutting deck.

Tomorrow is Cinco De Mayo! Or as it is better known in the U.S.A. ... BEER DRINKING DAY! Beer

.

My neighbor from Mexico tells me that back home they simply call it May the Fifth. He says he never heard of a Cinco De Mayo celebration until he came to join us in the United States.

Everything and I mean everything, including my sneakers, is covered in yellow green Oak tree pollen.  It is also abnormally hot close to 90.

Managed to cut a tree down that was attached to a telephone wire with wisteria vines.  I was very afraid that I wouldn't be able to reach all the vines and bring down the wire.

My friend, who is addicted to modeling, built a Baltimore style truss bridge for me completely out of styrene.  No Central Valley girders, all custom built and it is magnificent.

Baltimore Truss

http://historicbridges.org/wisconsin/hurleyoverpass/main.jpg

His model actually looks better than the prototype

We are having communication issues.  I asked him to let me watch the build, he agreed, then emailed me it was done.  Sorry Steve, it would have been a good MR story.

I explained that the layout (module) needs to be moved in the next 2 years and he is insisting on attaching piers to the bridge a 3' section of flex track.

No track has been installed so I am going to hold off showing you guys pictures, but it is otherwise completely weathered.  I have a lot to do on the benchwork, add 2-3.5" of foam, decide how two main lines will join before the bridge and create a grade on the extra 3/4" pieces of foam to gain some vertical interest.

On the same module, I want to install an engine facility with roundhouse and turntable.  It's probably too much in too little space, but I need to get done what I can.  Life is not infinite.

 Afternoon Diners!

Flo the gang and I will have a Beer please and give Rick and Steven what they want.

Day off was some what of a waste. Did a lot of running, 1 Honey Do and paid some bills.

New PRR Coach War. This new PRR Coach named Centfaun is going to take some major hacking if I am going to get it to work! Trucks is hitting the detailed frame (It has been hacked on before from the looks of it) and all so hitting the swing coupler box.

 Later, Ken

Evening diners,

I defeated the lugnut! Mowers back in operation, just had to adjust the front setup so the deck didn't come loose.

I'll post the pictures when I can.

Here's how I rigged it up.

If you haven't noticed that setup is not OE or stock, those bars are from the deck of another mower.

Steven:

I admire your mechanical abilities! I used to do that sort of stuff when I was young and couldn't afford to pay someone to fix things for me. My MGB was a wonderment of mechanical invention. I got 360,000 miles out of it (yes, miles - before Pierre Trudeau) by patching and jury rigging. It still passed safety checks to its' dying day. Unfortunately my ingenuity was the cause of its' demise. I used wheel bearing grease to lubricate the starter motor. The thick grease prevented the starter from disengaging the flywheel with the result that the starter motor turned into a giant generator and fried every piece of wiring in the car!DunceBang HeadCrying It even melted the plastic sleeve on the throttle cable!Laugh

You are lucky the car did not catch on fire. That must have been a lot of heat. Did the battery explode?

I can just picture the radio, instrument panel and everything else going haywire!!!Laugh

I have a V-Twin engine waiting around if the ZTRs engine ever gives up the ghost, then again it might get put into that Mow Kart I mentionedMischief it has a 11hp? single cylinder valve-in-block engine, the V is a OHV 19HP? unit, problem is it currently resides in the Ariens riding mower AKA the organ donor, I steal parts all the time from it.

My ZTR fix was two bars off the deck of the Ariens (part of the deck lift) a 4 inch bolt with two brass bushings inside the 16g steel pipe, that bolted where the stock bracket went, I had to drill a new hole for the end that attaches to the deck though.

My Paw Paw (grandpa my moms mothers husband) was a boiler maker/welder his entire working life, my grandpaw (my mom's father) was a pipefitter, and my late grandpa (my dad's father) was a Con-Ed employee. Anyways I would like to one day learn welding (gas not electric) so I could expand my tinkering horizons.

Happy Hellmann´s Day!

We did quite a bit of traveling in the past couple of days, so I think it is OK to have a day of R&R today!

Here is what you can do - if you like:

  • Stroll along "Graben" - Vienna`s (expensive) shopping mile, but hang on tight to your wallet!
  • Enjoy a cup of the many different kinds of coffee served in a typical "gemütlich" Viennese coffee house, but don´t order any of those coffee-imposters you can buy at Starbuck´s. Remember to address the waiter as "Herr Anton" or "Herr Karl", just don´t call him "Waiter!"
  • Take a Fiacre ride
  • Take the streetcar line #38 to Grinzing and enjoy a nice lunch, served with local wine, at a "Heurigen"
  • Or you can simply do - nothing!

Have a great day!

Happy times!

Hi Steven:

I'll be blunt. When someone pays you a compliment, like I did about your mechanical abilities, it would be polite to say "thank you". I have been doing my best to encourage you and to get you to focus. If you want me to shut up just say so.

Morning all.

ive a friend who knows a guy who sucessfully ran a current through his car to keep people from breaking into it. So it can be done  And what can be done with electricity is amazing, isn't it?

This is anxiety with the depression is gonna be the cause of a lot of grief for life, for me.  Ugh, the anxiety my doctor knows about, but since its work related, no medication for me there.  The depression I'm normally able to control

So I put in applications bout a couple weeks ago, and haven't heard anything from anyone...i think I'm gonna call them to see where I stand...or if I need to move on.   Hope not, because this one was a dream job.  It is packing and shipping, and perfect for me.  no customer interaction (after working retail you'd understand why this is wonderful), a raise, a STEADY WORK WEEK (once again, I don't do well with a flex schedule) and perks galore.  Yup, working Friday Saturday (today),Sunday and Monday for 7.55 is getting old and cutting into my model funds.

Steven NWP SWP ....  On the map, it looks like you are near Baton Rouge.

Ulrich ... Thanks again for posting the Austia tour.

Morning diners,

Yes it's about a 30-45 minutes from my house to downtown BR.

Jimmy, I have found a melatonin supplement helps me sleep ( i suffer from insomnia) and it combats the anxiety, that said it depends on the dosage it sometimes causes depression, I have been the course of anti anxiety/depression medications I've found that they worsen the condition. Good luck with your stuff, it does get better.

It´s a fine late afternoon. I spent some time watching a herd of deer grazing on the meadow behind our house. It´s really strange - the rail traffic on the adjacent mainline to Hamburg with its up to 20 trains an hour doesn´t seem to bother them, but a single car going down our road does.

I filmed these dinner guests just a little over a year ago!

Now the view is obscured by leaves.

Jimmy & Steven - I too suffer from insomnia, but I find, that sleep induced by medication is no help at all. I feel "freight-trained" the next morning and much more sleepy than if I had stayed up for an hour or so before heading for the hay again. It´s much better to find out what causes the insomnia than to battle it with pills. Well, that´s my My 2 Cents worth, yours may be different!

Gary - I am glad you like the tour. A liitle appreciation now andd then is an ointment for a soul in distress!

The "warbonnet" scheme looks fine on the FM consist! Still one of the best known paint schemes in the world!

I'm a Miracle Whip guy, myself... *

In fact, how about slathering some on a BLT for me, Chloe, and I'll take it back to the observation-lounge of the Hiawatha and enjoy it there. Bartender— the usual!

Thank you, dear.

Afternoon,

The mower gremlin is back! Grumpy

The rear deck mount is broke again! Bang Head

The other mount is close behind!Super Angry

What am I going to do about it?

Going tomorrow to get two pieces of 4"x8"x1/2" steel plate, Monday me and my Paw Paw are going to the local welding school, his sons wife's father is dean so he figures they'll do it free or cheap. The plan is to clean up the mounts and the deck have them weld the mounts to the plates and then weld the plates to the deck, that should handle the problem.

That Hiawatha is gorgeous.  I suppose back in the day, I would be gagging as the only non-smoker.

Installed a solar security light for the neighborhood.  My landscape chairman has been storing this for 3 weeks.  He told me he read the instructions, but now his story is there were never any instructions.  We have a round pole, a lower mount that is 2 semicircular clamps and an upper flat mount and one semicircular clamp. Nothin online and the company was closed today.

The thing swivels like that construction crane in the Toronto windstorm on the news today.  A former president, dealt with that by tightening the stainless bolts so tight the stripped and broke.  Two people said they had replacement bolts but they didn't.  Then all the help had things to do so we reconvened at 6 pm.

New bolts, it doesn't swivel as much, but I think we must be missing an adapter for the flat part to connect to the round pole.

Happy Cinco De Mayo to everyone!

.

I got together with the Southwest Florida Wargamers Club for a good time. Since it was 05/MAY we of course played a game set in Puebla in 1862. This is the Mexican line in defensive positions.

.

.

Then we moved to Texas for the Mexican assault on the Alamo. The Mexican army is getting ready to assault the walls at daybreak.

.

.

This has been a great day. We drank a lot of Modela, Corona, and Dos Equis. You better believe we ate a bunch of Nachos, Tacos and Guacamole. I hope everyone else was able to have a great day as well.

.

Be safe.

Evenin' folks......

Yaaawwwwnnnnnnnnnn!  I be pooped!  I was up at 5:15AM this morning so I could drive for an hour and twenty minutes to get to Oakfield, NY by 8AM to set up at the Genessee Society of Model Engineers for the Division NMRA meet today....  It is always great to visit the club as they now have 4 layouts in there, and are always great hosts for us.  The afternoon session was model railroad owned by one of our members who is also a member there and a visit to the local Shortlin Roundhouse to see some 1/1/scale stuff.  I couldn't stay for the afternoon session as I had to get back home to change into my Boy Scout Uniform (complete with my Silver Beaver) for the Eagle award Ceremony for one of the young men in the Handicapped Troop I am the commissioner for.  I provided two powerpoint presenations, printed the programs for it, and got to read the letter to Scout from National Office.

Anyway, I am currently exhausted!

The Sink De Mayo story is this:

"Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo."

One of my favorite bad puns!

Have to be an usher at church tomorrow morning and have to feed my fish and the kitties before I head to bed, so have a great night out there!

I'm a miracle whip fan myself, mayo is good, but I prefer the zing of whip.

amazingly i don't really have insomnia, so Im not willing to "tempt fate"  in that regards. I've found that spearmint tea, for some reason, improves my mood greatly.

im waiting on the 1/4th inch styrene to come in- a week after I ordered it on amazon.

Man, the Hiawatha car is a work of art.  the Pennsy is my first love, but Miwaukee road hit it out of the park With that car.

As I type my hockey team, the pittsburgh penguins are leading their game 3-2, and shpuld they win tonoght, they take a 3-2 series lead with pne more round before lord Stanley's cup.

Evening diners,

Jimmy, I know how it is, once you get something that works stick with it.

Ulrich, I take a melatonin supplement for insomnia caused by my autism/OCD and a deficiency of naturally occurring melatonin, a pleasant side effect is I have less anxiety, which I think is three things, 1 the melatonin acts as anti anxiety, 2 the melatonin allows me to sleep which helps lessen anxiety, 3 a placebo effect.

Dave, in case you miss my first post, thank you for your being straightforward, I apologize for not saying thanks or thank you.

Anyways not much going on I'll stop by again later.
