Howdy ....
Kevin .... I did visit Allen McLelland once and saw his Virginian and Ohio in operation. Definately a great layout.
Ulrich .... I'm enjoying the visit to Austria. Thanks for your time posting our tour.
Everybody.... Have a great day.

Just out of curiosity, I checked how much further south Steven is from where I live.
It´s over 1,700 miles! Anchorage, OTOH, is only 550 miles north of us! Vancouver is about 280 miles south of us.
Does that make me a polar bear, now?
Happy times!

Isn't it that odd that it is the layout he was not happy with, tore out, and replaced with a new one?
I really do not like the new Nickle Plate layout all that much. The AM was dramatic and visually stunning. The NKP is much neater and more "finished", but it lacks a signature. The AM was Tony Koesters creation, the NKP looks like any other nice layout (very nice), but has no real pizzazz.
I know the NKP was built for operation, and to create special scenes from real life, and it excells at these from what I can gather. However, the AM was truly amazing and inspirational.
I wonder of he ever has regrets. I doubt it. He seems really happy with the NKP from what he writes.

I guess I am the northernmost member of the Diner fellowship and our friend Jabear is certainly the southernmost!
This is my hometown, it consists of the junction of two highways, literally.

If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
... and now for something different - a blast from the glorious past of railroading!
Enjoy!
Afternoon diners,
It is now 2:45 PM Pacifica Watch Time.
We're in downtown BR today, finding parking is pretty impossible.
Be back later!
Time to say Good Night to you!
Some wise crack politician said that she could not see any German culture beyond the language - well, I can!
I have not posted for some time due to a great many problems in my life but I have managed to overcome them and am now back in the diner( I always looked in in my tortured travels). However, Tinplate Toddler since I live in Scotland and I do believe that Glasgow is a bit north of Hamburg I can therefore claim to be the most northern member Now that I am back on an even keel I will be visiting more regularly. In the mean time the drinks are on me!!!

Watched an elephant consist in Deshler turn itself on the wye and reattach to a ethanol train so it could run long hood forward Modern engines are not my period, but it was later than a GP40. Seemed to be a mystery to everyone else watching too.
Met with the county forestry agent today. We have community property, and I am the HOA pres. Our trees are being strangled by all sorts of vines, grape vines, poison ivy, greenbriar.
It's one permit to cut the vines, it's another if pull out the roots. If we cut down too many vines we have to replace them with 2 trees and 6 shrubs per 800 sq ft. 50 years ago, it was probably just trees. Now it's greenbriar so thick, you have to be a rabbit to get around and the state thinks we need more understory?

Good afternoon diners,
Stopping by again, Henry what do you think the crew was thinking? Actually turning the motive power just to run long hood first? must've been quite a sight!
Heading out again.
It's 5:50 PM Pacifica Watch Time!
Eveing Diners
Flo, give the gang and I a and Steven and Rick what they want.
Ulrich I watched one of the videos you post where a train went from one station to another and found it sort of boring. But Yet, I could not stop watching it? So keep posting them! Glad you are back in the dinner!
PRR Coach Wars Are Over! Well for now! The Bachmann PRR coaches have made it around the layout around 20 times now! Or 27 scale miles so they are fixed!
So What Do I Do? I found another PRR Pullman Coach with the name Centfaun on it. None at K-10 Model Trains had a clue to what kind of a car it is or who made the model. Very detailed, even has chains hang under the coach.
There is all so a PRR Dottlebug for only $22.00! It is a Bachmann and maybe later. I hate installing decoders.

well the crud is back. I had 3 good days and BAM! it comes back. I just slept 2 hours. IF I can just get rid of this cough. Wife has it now too....

Yes, you are Brian - you beat me by about 130 miles! Makes me feel less of a polar bear - thank you!
NWP SWPActually turning the motive power just to run long hood first?
Sometimes, but not always, if the lead engine is cab-signal equipped (or the cab signals are not functioning on the trailing unit) and rather than running the entire way back at restricted speed, the choice of turning the engines looks like a better option.
512 - Cab Signal System (CSS) - General 512.1 Cab Signal System (CSS) rules apply where designated in special instructions, dispatcher message, or Form EC-1. 512.2
The movement of a train not equipped with cab signal apparatus is prohibited, except when authorized in special instructions or Form EC-1 as follows: 1. Movement is governed by fixed signal indication, and 2. Movement is made at restricted speed unless the train dispatcher authorizes an alternate method of operation.
512.3 The cab signal apparatus on the leading end of the first locomotive or control car must be tested and found to be operational within 24 hours before the locomotive or control car leaves its initial terminal. If test equipment is not available at a point where another unit will be required to become a lead unit, this unit must also be tested at the initial terminal.

I didn't watch the video but I have seen this happen more than once out on the road, sometimes with "foreign power" and a cab signal or ATS equipped locomotive will have to be supplied as the lead engine.
Regards, Ed
Evening all!
Mentioning locations, I think I'm somewhere in the middle of our group. Mine is approximately 46° 24' 20.9628'' N x 105° 50' 20.1984'' W.
Hobby Front: Still waiting to get parts for both the wheel car and the new engine. New tap, in order to thread the coupler pad holes, should be here Monday. I will get some Loctite Plastics Bonding system to try to glue the wheelsets for the wheel car tomorrow. (The CA I tried didn't work.)
I'm stopping by really quick, Henry, why wouldn't the crew turn the lead unit to run short hood? Either at their origination point or at the plant?
NWP SWPI'm stoping by really quick, Henry, why wouldn't the crew turn the lead unit to run short hood? Either at their origination point or at the plant?
People were expecting the engines to run around to the far end of the train and go in the other direction. Maybe the lead unit was defective in some way, as someone suggested.
Good Evening,
As far as symphonies go my favourite is Beethoven's 7th.
Henry, I don't know what cataract replacement cost is here as it is covered under our health insurance. I do know that my MIL paid an extra $500 for more 'deluxe' lens. So far I have escaped that but I expect it won't be that long before I will be facing the same surgery. I do know that my eyesight isn't as good as it was. I still only need glasses for reading by my last test was 20/25 instead of the 20/15 it was 20 years ago. Oh well, not too bad for 70 I guess.
Tomorrow we will be up early as in 5:15 so we can be out the door at 6:30 to attend another Birding and Breakfast at the local sanctuary. It is called Fort Whyte Nature Reserve and is actually just on the edge of the city. It was a clay quarry for the cement plant nearby but eventually it filled with water and Lafarge turned it over to the city for a nature reserve. There are still some tracks running through the bush with CPR stamped on them. It has been a very long time since they were used. There are even a couple of switches complete with switch stands. I'm surprised CP didn't pull up the rails.
Time for tea as we will have an early night.
CN Charlie
Evening diners,
Henry I think I've got it now.
My favorite piece of classical would be either Beethovens Fifth or the Ride of the Valkyries.
Unless you prefer the modernized Fifth of Beethoven.
Did you know that Billy Joels This Night was taken from Beethovens Pathetique Sonatas Second Movement.
I'll be lurking in the corner for the rest of the night.
CNCharliebe out the door at 6:30 to attend another Birding and Breakfast at the local sanctuary.
Sounds interesting!
We had our first hummingbird last night. Stupid me didn't have the hummingbird feeder up yet so it didn't stick around. We usually have three or four of them all summer. It's fun getting buzzed when they fly by your head! Please take that last sentence the right way!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Hey all, sorry I've been AWOL. Stuff going on in my life, and not good stuff.
(My Model Railroad, My Rules)
These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
Jimmy, good luck with your stuff, hope it clears up soon.
Anyone hear about the signing bonuses Class Is are offering?
Good Morning!
W´ll be enjoying nice weather today, so we will be "on the road again" railroad that is, instead of spending our time in a stuffy museum. Let´s go west and take the Railjet to the city of Linz, the capital of the state of Upper Austria, situated on the Danube.
After a stroll through the "Altstadt" - the baroque downtown of Linz, we take the tram up the Pöstlingberg. Until 2008, the Pöstlingberg Railway ran on 1,000mm track and used pre-WW II trolleys, but in that year, the line was re-gauged to 900mm and is now part of thge Linz streetcar system, with modern streetcars climbing up the hill.
Let´s go back in time a little and have a look at the good old days.
How much things have changed you can see in this video.
If we have just a bit of luck, we might be able to attend a concert in the church, which is famous for its organ.
For those who´d like a different kind of treat - take a look at this.
My favourite (next to Petra´s cheese cake and cherry crumble pie, that is)!
Morning all.
Stuff thatvis going on has been job hunting for a full time job, which would let me get medical treatment for my anxiety, i.e. Therapist.
ive given up on the dating again....at least this way I keep all my money for trains And Food, that's much more important.
At least I got to operate on a layout last week, and am working on my projects.
Good morning, everybody ...
I'll have coffee and a pecan roll, please.
Ulrich ... I enjoyed the old trolley ride and other videos.
Jimmy ... Keep your chin up. Overall, the job market should be favorable with the national unemployment rate at 3.9%. I'm not sure what sort of work you are seeking or what skills you have, but there are jobs out there. Also, don't hesitate to add to your education when you can to improve future opportunities. ... Always believe in your self and assume your future is bright. You have many good years ahead.
Regarding model railroading, I am currently installing decoders. After doing some of that, I have several projects on my very long to do list......
Good morning folks
I'm pulling an all-nighter here to try to "re-align" my circadian clock. Pretty much all winter I would climb in the berth at about 6 AM and sleep to one or two PM, stay busy for a while then retire to the train room from about 9 PM to 5 AM.
I'll see if I can try to get out of this unhealthy habit.
hon30critterWe had our first hummingbird last night.
Wow, Dave, they must have skipped right over Ohio. I put my feeders up last week but haven't seen a Ruby throated Hummingbird yet. Our flock of Baltimore Orioles showed up last week and I have oranges and grape jelly out for them
Of course, just a few nights ago the low was around 25°F(-4) around here.
I hope things get squared away for you too, Jimmy. Working on that neat bridge might help distract you from some of your troubles. I tell people that Model Railroading is my therapy (and it IS!)
How about a nice shot of a freshly painted Conrail SD50 to start the weekend off?

Amazing! This is a "Classic Fallen Flag" Where have the years gone?
To those in need... Cheers, Everybody, Ed
Morning diners!
I'll take an apple fritter and some cold brew extra light and sweet.
Maybe I'll go back to that P2k kit I was working on, hopefully I get paid today and I'll go shopping for airbrushes, paint, and of course a few undecorated kits.
At the veterinary clinic getting one of the pooches up to date on vaccinations, later I gotta find a lawn equipment place to see if they have the parts for my paw paws zero turn. (It's 5 years old and stuff is really starting to break, one of the spindles had to be replaced, all the idler pulleys, the rear deck mounts came off had to be welded back on, the front deck pin snapped. Well we'll get it running in spite of all that.) After I track down the parts I gotta clean the pools and balance them. Some of the stuff I use is pretty caustic, ever time I go to the pool store for chemicals I come out smelling like the chemical cocktail that fills the store, it stays with you all day, at least I don't use Muriatic Acid to bring the PH down I use the granules.
Well it's now 10:15 AM Pacifica Watch Time!
hon30critter It's fun getting buzzed when they fly by your head!
That reminded me of something that happened last summer.
I was sweeping the floor of the garage and a hummingbird buzzed in and hovered right before my face. I admired it for a few moments, it buzzed back out but quickly returned, darting around the garage and "barnstorming" me.
This went on for the next few minutes and I couldn't figure out what this little guy was trying to tell me. Then I had a moment. Right outside the garage wall is a feeder and I walked out to check it. Sure enough it was nearly empty.
The hummingbird was probably wondering if he was ever going to get his human properly trained.
