angelob6660 Jimmy_Braum my uncle got a DNA ancestry kit- Mom and I went in together to get him that. We been trying to get for more than 5 years. But never had the money or the courage to get one. We wanted to get one for our grandma, to find her origins on her grand grandma's side. We don't have a clue why her side has slight red hair for being Mexican. So Jimmy what is reason?

If yhou know much, you can do soem reasearch at ancestry.com
My father got back into Ireland, and the point where the King Of England exiled my ancestors form Scotland to Ireland. But the trail goes cold in the 1600s into Scotland. So I'm one of the dreaded Scots-Irish, and his mothers side was Norwegian Immigrants. Is it any wonder I had bright curly red hair as a lad, myself? ANd my beard WAS red, though my hair turned to a light brown as I ended puberty, that is whats left of it, i started losing at age 16.. There is some reminents of the red if you look at my beard, but sigh, its been gray for years.
Its my mothers side I want to know more about, but I think we are Irish there as well, though It wasn't talked about, probably because of the "No Irish need Apply" 'rules" of a certain time period. The rest is English, probably some German adn definitely European.
Oh, and DURN IT! NO ROYALTY on my dads side!!!
If you find out anything, let us know. I know the kits arent' cheap. But they cna hold a wealth of info.
I'd like Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr to go digging into my ancestry and go further if they can. On his show on PBS "Finding your roots". But he only does celebrities, not ordinary folks. I could care less about Kim Kardasian's or George Clooney's roots, I wanna know more about mine! He may run into the same brick wall my fahter did though.
Have a great night....

Well, Its Christmas Eve, and I'm stuck working. I have what we call a turnaround shift, that is I work tonght and again tomorrow day shift. I get from 10 pm off until 8 am tomorrow, because I said we were getting up early Xmas morning To do our presents, so the night auditor is coming in early at 10. Its still going to be a long day tomorrow, up at 3 am to open our presents, then work 8-4, then off to very dear close friends and the "great nepehws" for dinner and to open their presents that santa and Uncle galaxy and My Oh bring to their grandpa's house.
That means roughly I'll be up from 3 until about 11 pm, unless we duck out earlier from after dinner and presents. No time for my afternoon nap even after work. I volunteered but didn't know I was going to have a turnaround shift. I volunteered so the day person can have it off with her kids, ages 8-14. It IS time and a half, and next year If I'm still here, I'll say I worked last year, this year someone elses turn!!!! ANd If I DO have to work, I'll say I want either xmas eve or xmas day OFF so I, too, can have a Xmas. {those who argue with me over "XMAS", I wish youd google it to see it actually has as much respect as "Christmas", is older and means the same}
Slow tonight all check ins already here. Unless someone wanders in, or a new reservation comes in, i have nothing else to do. Tomorrow I HAVE 8 CHECK OUTS, AND 5 CHECK INS. I don't have housekeeping, but the breakfast person and the one maintenance guy will be here to so I won't be totally alone till around noon, then all alone.
No train stuff this year for xmas. I dont even know what I'd want if I did get trains...
My OH and I opened one gift each today...I got My OH a crystal Angle ornament adn MY Oh got me two new ties. SInce I wear ties to work, They are welcome. One purple one and one gold one. My Oh didn't have much to work with, only $20. I spent $26 on my OH. Then I got us and wrapped some of our favorite xmas candies, which this time of year I enjoy since candy isn't on my diabetic diet plan. I got MY OH a sweater, a pr of Pjs, and a New jacket. I got the same, except the sweater. It still was cheap enough on sale to get myself the Pjs and also a jacket, that should match My OHs nicely. Since mY OH doesn't read this forum, I can post what I got. LOL. Not much, just enough to know its christmas. I got a $10 gift card for DD from My Front Desk Manager. That way I can get a nice cup of coffee on my way to work, ours isn't bad, and Actually I think I will give it to My OH, who drinks more coffee than I do, and is out and about more, maybe can use it more than I can.
We got the 8 yo great nephew a razor scooter, the 3 yo a big boy scooter, and the 1 yo a trike. I got stockings for teh boys as well. I've got tofill them tonight too, when I get home. I have the stuffing. I'll add 2 oranges to the bottom, as I used to get when I was a kid. I asked my mother once why? {My grandmother had a winter home in FLorida, adn often sent us oranges or we went to visit for easter, so no big deal to us to get an orange. SHe said in the old days that meant you were wealthy enough to afford an orange form florida to put in the stockings for the kids for xmas}. the other stocking stuffers are age appropriate or candy, whcih I got the same for all three boys. I hope they enjoy them, nothing special other than it came form Uncle Galaxy and My OH.
Well, its 7 ok, have to check where santa is. Over europe I guess. Three more hours to go.
If I don't pop in tomorrow, MERRY CHRISTAMS!!!!
Belated Happy CHanunuka!!
Happy FEstivus{?}
If I don't see you htis week, HAPPY NEW year! May it be happy, healthy and prosperous!!!
{ We (My OH AND i) could definitely use a healthy and properous one!}

Amtrak America, 1971-Present.
Hey all, missed me? I've been just too busy this week.... 6 cashiers at work quit in the week before Christmas, so I picked up another day of work- 7 more hours and a few more bucks. Ugh, but I am exhausted still.
Christmas shopping was done on Thursday- Dad got a giftcard, mom got a foreman grill, and my uncle got a DNA ancestry kit- Mom and I went in together to get him that.
After this week, If I ever won the lottery, I'd be willing to buy property in the hills (Near the Wheeling and Lake Erie trackage), build a huge house with a huge basement, and put a 30ft wall around it...maybe electrify it to. But, I to have dreamed of owning a private passenger car- preferable to own a club car, observation or sleeper with a small kitchen.
The open house season has been going well for the Mid Mon Valley model railroad club...we broke 170 yesterday, and normally we get about 100-150 for a year, so we are ahead of the game- see my other post in the general discussion about something cool that happened there yesterday.
Health- Asthma has been bad again, as has my anxiety. I hope everyone is well here, and has a very happy holiday season.
(My Model Railroad, My Rules)
These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
Afternoon Diners,
I been peeking in and out during the last few days. Several attempts to reply.
I haven't seen the colored episodes of I Love Lucy because I have that episode. And I didn't see the Dick Van *** Show because I missed it and I know I'm not going to see it.
I always watched I Love Lucy and it will always be my favorite show. When the company decided to show colored episodes I wanted to watch them. But the dad say if I did it would ruin the show. I don't believe that because I have the colored versions of Bewitched season 1 and 2, I Dream of Jeannie season 1. They were in black and white. So yeah I grew up with color and black and white movies and shows. My imagination can go plain and boring or very excited colors. Although that breaks when they show you the dresses and clothing in the movie that is very different in your mind.
I thought about living in a caboose but I idea was a little crammed in. A more suitable was a private heavyweight or lightweight passenger car probably a pullman. Easier to add a kitchen and living room than the other way around. A guy can dream with very own Amtrak F40PH.
Layout Thoughts: Since I thought of modeling late NYC. I could add some PC cars like a hopper, gondola, and 3 diesels. And end the layout in 1970. Make a E unit with 3 coaches.
Probably I'll start early CR in one to two years with PC RDG, EL, LV patched units. In my mind it's going to be a very small layout with around 4 to 6 locomotives.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Cheers, the Bear.

Funny you should post a video of the Francis L. Suter. I rode that car back in 1984 or so.
A total of about 200 feet! They didn't even serve me dinner. I rode the car out of the Collinwood back shop, onto the transfer table, over one track and back into the shop.
My bro-in-law was one of the guys in charge of restoration when the car was owned by Bruce (Ryan) Hoffman. He was a Cleveland radio personality who suddenly, sadly, passed away.
That left the car's future up in the air and I was glad to see what Hal Dunlap has done with the car since.
Part of my fascination with everything PULLMAN was the fact that I became a private car steward, quite by accident, back in 1973. I was still in High School!
I got almost ALL the perquisites of the rich and famous and all I had to do was serve drinks, make up the beds, serve meals and tidy-up the car.
Over the years I've traveled quite a few miles in the comfort of various private cars and, so far, haven't paid a cent out of my own pocket (in fact, did pretty good on tips!)
It's all in how you play the game.

I literally went from Ocean to Ocean on this trip! Detroit-Ottawa-Vancouver-Chicago-Newport News-Detroit-Cincinnati. Five Weeks!
I sure made a lot of friends in Canada on that trip. Friends I've never even met!
We were getting close to Windsor and the owner of the car told me "we have to do something with all that beer — we'll never get through customs with that much". see what you can do to use it up.
Don't 'ya know we encountered a slow order a few hours later and I looked ahead to see a bunch of "Gandy Dancers" standing along the right-of-way leaning on their picks and shovels. Quick thinking, I dragged cases of Canada's Finest over to the service door and started tossing it out to dozens of VERY happy M-O-W workers. This was mid-August and late afternoon. It was hot!
They HAVE to still be talking about that day! I was a local hero and they don't even know my name
Fun stuff for a high school senior. Our chef was a retired PRR man named "Big Daddy Perry" Imagine that!
Here I am, years later, still in the monkey-suit. Sure having fun, though!

NWP SWPYep, especially because it's empty!
I can appreciate your situation. Dianne and I went from paycheque to paycheque for years with no money in the bank account. It's not a great feeling. Fortunately our circumstances have changed (thanks mostly to Dianne's career success).
If I can offer any advice it would be to start saving for your future. Even $25.00 a week will grow significantly over time. Your savings might eventually allow you to buy your own home, but even if that doesn't happen you will still have money in the bank.
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
hon30critter NWP SWP Also on Ozark they had a California Zephyr consist for 3 mil, I'll just get my wallet out and write them a check! If your wallet is really that big it must be a PITA to sit on! Dave

I was thinking of getting a flatcar and building a caboose body atop that... Also on Ozark they had a California Zephyr consist for 3 mil, I'll just get my wallet out and write them a check!
Dave, glad that you did, fixed.
Ed. Ozark, I has seen them before, but not on this google search. I would love to have my own Private Varnish.
My uncles' 3rd wife's ex husband bought a car from the Rosenbloom family. Not sure it's name but it has been worked on for 3 years to get it up to Amtrak standards. Rosenbloom owned the Baltimore Colts and then he sold and either bought the Cardinals or the Rams. Irsay killed my interest in football when he moved the team to Indianapolis in the middle of the night. Did you know they need bullet proof glass?
To swing the deal, I would have to win either the Powerball or Megamillions this week, both are close to $300 mil. I would have to buy something road worthy and RTR now rather than the $30,000 rust buckets they have for sale. I understand annual maintenance and storage runs around $30K too. With a couple hundred mil, that should be no problem
We can dream can't we?

Same here, Henry, about the links. I thought Ed's caboose was a real caboose!
Just checked into the Berea train cam, looks like a fresh layer of snow. DIL checked in, she arrived at her dad's, no driving problems. He's in the Cleveland area.

Hi Henry:
Just wanted to point out that both links go to the caboose buying story. Ed's build link isn't there.
BigDaddy We missed our chance to buy cheap cabooses.
That's a fact!
Ozark Mountain Railcar gets a few "bargains" in every once in a while.
https://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/railEquipmentGrid.php?category=Cabooses
If you register you can see the prices and terms.
We built ours from the ground-up and it is a pretty close rendition of what I believe a caboose should be.
Several of my friends have owned and/or restored cabooses and that can be pretty challenging.
Thanks for those interesting links, Big Daddy

Flo, Ed, Gary, Track Fiddler, Brent, Galaxy, Henery, Jan, Inch, Z-Strip, Angelob, Ray, Mr B and I will have a Crown Royal with a chaser. Give SteveO, Steven and Rick a RBF and leave a Stein outside for Ulrich.

Henery Great Photo! How is your wife doing? Far as projects getting of hand, yea I know that feeling.
I was shocked when I got up this morning! We had are first snowfall for this winter! While it was only 2" it was a very wet snow and all I could see out the window was bowed pine tree limbs covred in white stuff. Roads where bare but the trees where covred in snow. Very pretty drive into work.
BBQ is done and so am I.

Evenin' Folks!
Janie, all I need is a refil for my decaf, please......
I spent much of the day making sure everything has been wrapped and out in the right place for me to take over to the festivities at my son's house on Christmas day. I had just finished breakfast and giving Blackie his insullin and Manet his pregnisone ear rub and turned on the computer. The phone rang and it was my DIL's cell phone. I went and put in my hearing aids but by the time I got them in and on, the phone had been hung up. She called back a few minutes later and told me they had just had breakfast over at Dunkin Donuts and wanted to fill her car with gas.... I had $1.80 per gallon off on my TOPS Market card that I need to get used and I won't need gas for the Volt until February most likely.
I told her I hadn't yet gotten dressed but to give me about 15 minutes to wash up and put clothes on and we could go over to the TOPS Gas Station and get her Gas Guzzling SUV filled with Fossilized Dinasaur Dung. Called back as soon as was ready and told them to meet me over there. Her car only holds about 20 gal and only gets about 15 mpg. My son filled her car to the brim and it cost him $11.40...... (saved about $29.50) If I had used it I would have saved about $3....
Today was drizzly rain until about noon when the sn*w began. We got about 3" of it. I was about ready to see about plugging in the little sn*wblower I have when a couple guys from across the street walked down and cleaned my driveway for me by hand.... Now there is a little story behind this. About 3 weeks ago the guy across the road on the side street (He is a teacher/administrator I worked with during my years here in Geneva) asked me if they could use my driveway to park one of the cars over the holidays. His new wifes daughter is home from college with her new husband (who is from England, BTW) and last year the guy got a nastygram from the city for parking on his lawn by the road.... I told him it would be fine for them to use the driveway as I rarely have anyone parking over there. So the girls Hubby and the son (a local police officer) cleared out the new snow in that driveway, and then decided to come over and do my main driveway as well. I do like the neighborhood I live in!!!
Have to be up early tomorrow to make sure I can get my car out of the driveway (may be a few more inches of the stuff overnight). Both my Grandaughters will be in the Sunday School Christmas Pagent tomorrow morning at Church... Wouldn't want to miss that!
Have a great evening and I will be back before the start of Christmas (sundown tomorrow) to wish you all a good one!

NWP SWPI looked into getting a caboose hopefully I'll have the capital to do so someday... I'd probably buy an Illinois Central, Ilinois Central Gulf, or Midsouth long platform caboose...
Hi Steven:
I'm not sure if you know this, but Ed's wonderful caboose is not the real thing. He built it himself from the ground up, just like you might build a garden shed with a few unique features. Ask Ed to share some more pictures. It's really comfy inside. Maybe he can link us to the build thread.
Maybe it's an option you could explore.
Hey Ed, nice caboose!
I can see how that can cause some confusion...

Hi, Dave
That's Thomas W. Richner, a very talented electrician at the GE plant I retired from.
Thank you, too, Moe Larry Curly...

It is my understanding that if someone calls Ron Howard that these days and is working for him, they get the same sort of treatment. (They get fired!)

I understand that problem as well. My (now late) paternal grandparents and my Mom never got along. It finally got to the point where Mom would not go there for Christmas or Thanksgiving. (I am not close with that side of the family myself.)
Hobby Front: Scored a deal on track. Eighty-two pieces of Atlas 9" Code 100 bulk track for $82! (That includes the shipping.) From a closed hobby shop via a group I have joined on Facebook. Wasn't planning on getting track for the yard quite this quickly but for that price I couldn't pass it up. (That quantity doesn't get all the straights needed but it gets a vast majority.)
