Jeffrey's Trackside Diner, October 2017 - Any and All are Welcome, All Aboard!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 1, 2017 3:30 AM

Welcome to Jeffrey's Trackside Diner.  It's a place where you can come, relax and talk about most anything except religion, politics, immigration, or any other hot button topic that gets people angry and upset.  Please see forum rules if you have any questions.

The staff here is very friendly and able to serve. There's Zoe, Chloe, Flo, Janie, and Brunhilda. They'll serve up plenty of virtual food with a smile and a friendly "Gruezi mitenand!"

Thats right, this month we'll visit Switzerland again! I took the liberty to choose this location for the month, as the country is breathtakingly beautiful at this time of the year. Add to that the fact , that Switzerland has more railroading activity per square mile than other civilzed nation and we are in for a month of fun, entertainment and exceptionally good food!

Enjoy!

Good Morning!

Well, against all odds, October starts with a smile in my neck of the woods. It´s sunny, which should turn the town´s annual big flea market on Main Street into a big success!

Pardon me for taking this month´s diner back to Switzerland, but the country is certainly at her best in this season. Lots of sunshine, gorgeous scenery and a clear sky providing breathtaking mountain views is certainly worth the effort of traveling this far!

Today´s trip takes us right into the heart of Switzerland - to the beautiful city of Lucerne, where we board a train to Interlaken. Enjoy the following cab ride:

Have a pleasant day!

Hmmm, I've learned my new phone has a voice activated text writing capability. It works quite well but apparently NOT for this site.

Perhaps,Mr. OTTE could have the tech department look into that. It's easier to speak your thoughts and autocorrect doesn't seem to apply it's usual debunking of your words!

Good morning Ulrich and all!

Oktoberfest is here!. On thagcnote I'll have about five sips of a good German or European beer.

Got to work the day shift today.

My heart has been operating these last few days. I was out of one of the two meds I have to keep it from arythmia, but getting it filled has only moderately successful at restoring a more normal best.

I hope it's simply the lack of meds that caused it, and not a new problem.

It has drained my energy vastly though.

Today at work should be fairly easy i hope so.

If tge problem persists, yes you guys I will see my cardiologist or go to the ER.

Gidday Chloe, I tend to associate cheese and chocolate with Switzerland, so as chocolate isn’t good for me, some cheese and crackers, please.

Thanks for moving the Diner, Ulrich, as we’re in Switzerland I could practice my yodelling, but I suspect Vinnie would throw me out for sounding like a strangled cat. It has ominous implications, but until you put up that link to “Oh, Dr Beeching” , I’d forgotten completely about that show!!

Well, I’m probably over optimistic but I hope everyone has a better month, this month. I lost a good friend after a, thankfully, brief battle with cancer; another mate taken far too young, but the up side was that later on the same day, my late pilots youngest son rang me to tell me that his wife had just delivered their first born, a healthy little girl, so the cycle of life continues.

Bear, your Bill Watterson quote for today is very appropriate to me right now...Whistling

To be honest Ray, I was thinking of myself, though with your good works with your Church, the Scouts, NMRA, the R&GV RR Museum, and support of other good causes with acronyms that don’t mean much down here, (I did “Google” and came up a little wiser), I’m not at all sure how you’ve got any time for model railroading.
So my advice to you is “Grow back the Beard!!!” otherwise there could be another type of distraction!! Though, if I put the brain into gear first, it could be not only a pleasant distraction, but a deserved one as well. Smile, Wink & Grin (In that case take no notice of my diatribe!! This message will self destruct in 1o seconds!!)LaughLaugh

herrinchoker, it maybe because we are subjected to US made television programmes, but the ffolkes in Maine were easy to understand. The trouble could have come from me, the Kiwi accent has been described as fast, lazy, clipped, with strangled vowels!! When email was in it’s infancy, I had cause to call a company in Georgia, with my first contact, we both struggled to understand each other, though by talking to someone else in the company, we did manage to sort things out eventually!!

“If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently.” Bill Watterson.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Good morning, everybody .

Ulrich .... Thanks for moving the Diner. .... The trains should be on time this month if the crews have Swiss watches.

Those who care to take a break in the middle of the month, will also welcome at the 41st annual Ham Festival in our little county in western KY. (October 13-15)

Ulrich I enjoyed the Brit show Oh Dr. Beeching  Interesting subplots but I could have used subtitles at times.  I used to watch quite a lot of Brit TV but never got into Downton Abbey and Sherlock Holmes and Dr Who have gotten quite strange. Endeavor is in it's 3rd season, it's a prequel to Inspector Morse.  Aside from the local news and Nascar, I watch very little TV these days.

It was 87 early this week, it's 50 at dawn today.  Lots of dead wood down in my backyard that I hadn't noticed from the storms we had the last month or two.  I guess I could cut it up but it's pine so it's no good for firewood and then I would have a big stack of wood rotting in the backyard.  I used a chipper once, one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment I ever used.  Not doing that again, ever.

Afternoon Diners,

I thought there was another day to September. I didn't know we started October.

I worked on the layout some more. After I finished laying the cork to dry yesterday. I came this morning with the sand paper smoothing out the top and edges.

Next I trimmed the hills smooth around the outlined road stripes (the ones I added yesterday). Then I cut a slit in the foam to slide in the track power cord. It was tough to push the cord inside the foam, but I managed it. It was harder to go though cork twice.

The Barrie Allandale Railroad Modellers club attended the Brampton train show this past weekend, and we had a good time. I got to run a few of my scratchbuilt/kitbashed critters. I had mixed success. Three out of five ran pretty much flawlessly, but two had problems. My attempt at a Galloping Goose had troubles with the front truck not swivelling freely, and my little 23 ton Grandt Line Canadian Pacific switcher wouldn't run at all. That's ominous.

The show didn't seem to be very well attended unfortunately for the vendors. The weather may have play a role because it was beautiful and sunny. Maybe lots of people decided to do outdoor activities instead.

We set a record for packing up the portable layout. It took less than 1/2 hour! "Many hands make light work".

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good Morning!

When I woke up (too early) this mlorning, I had to find out that the nice weather must have moved on to a friendlier place than my neck of the woods. The wet & windy waether is back, just in time for the holiday tomorrow!

Well, it does not help to complain about the weather - it ois what it is.

We are still in Lucerne today and start the day with a boat trip on Lake Lucerne, which takes us to Vitznau, a small town located at the foot of Rigi Mountain. We will then take a steam special train up the mountain.

Enjoy!

Before I get into my usual banter, I also will extend my condolences to all the victims of Las Vegas. Why people need to do this I will never understand.

Flo (or whoever's handy) could I get a clubhouse sandwhich, cottage fries with white cheese melted on them and some raspberry iced tea? Thank you so much.

Hobby Front: Got the birthday order placed. Ended up taking a few things off and adding a few other things. Ended up with a few general things (a car cradle and some model cement) and other parts for 4 other projects: The SD45 (headlight), the SD40-2 (styrene and debonder to fix a few things on the shell and a plow for the front), my GP20s (one kind of plow for the 2 passenger units and a different kind of plow for the 6 regular units) and the industrial area (some pallets).

Also attacking a few odds and ends projects: The decals on the drop end (if I'm ambious I might try to get the start of the load built) and smoothing the paint on the excursion car roofs (for some reason the paint didn't go on smooth. Nail file and 2000 grit sandpaper.)

SadHuh?

Our sympaties and prayers to all families involved the the Vegas shootings

I don't think anyone can understand what goes through an individual's mind leading up to such an occurance (Tradgety).

Also an incident in Edmonton last evening.  A bunch of people injured but at least no deaths.  The world has seemingly gone nuts.

Beyond that I am at a loss for words.

I have mentioned before I have a son that has built a very successful Amazon marketplace business. He has seen phenomenal growth and has asked me to come on board to help. To this end, he recommended I enroll in a micro-masters program in supply chain management. In doing so, he introduced me to an innovative new approach to taking certified courses from some of the premier universities--MIT, Harvard, Berkley, and Georgetown, to name a few. The courses are free if you choose to audit them or there is a relatively nominal charge to get a certificate at the end of the program. The course I am taking is provided by MIT and is the first half of their Masters in Supply Chain Management curriculum. If you complete the course (5 classes) you get a certificate and you have to the option to matriculate into the formal program, take the second half of the program in 5 months on campus, and receive a masters degree from MIT. The whole concept is pretty revolutionary.

I am into the second week of the program and am discovering it is definitely a masters-level program. The first week was mostly review for me. This week was a tougher, especially for someone who has been out of school for many, many years. The nice thing is that the lectures are recorded so if I am having trouble with a concept, I can back up and hear it again. I feel like someone has wrung out my brain like a sponge.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, Ed, Gary, Inch, Ulrich, Brent, Galaxy, Jan and I will have a Beer please.

It is in deed sad about Vegas. Have to wonder what made the 64 year old man go of his rocker like that? Over all humans suck!

Far as Work Front, it was a Good Slooooow Day with only 2 customers. Only one person bought but I made a extra $115.00 so I am happy.

Little worried about Job Security. Marv the 85 year old owner is having open heart sugery Monday. Seems he needs a heart valve replaced. From what I under stand if he was say my age it would not be that big of a deal these days. But while in over all good health he is 85 years old. So I am worried for booth him and my self.

First, thoughts and prayers are with the people of Las Vegas.

Is say something, but it's verboten here.

My heart seems to have returned to a more normal, albeit it off, beat.

Nothing much. Just tired, though.

I got $ 500 in the mailbox today!!!

THAT will buy my new tires before winter snows comes.

Thanks be to god(s) for the $$$.

Evening Diners,

I thought today was a good day to add some modeling clay. I took the contents out of the box and read the instructions. Realizing I needed water, which I didn't have a measuring cup to ruin. So I'll put the layout away until next weekend.

Good Morning!

I am still in a state of shock over what happened in Las Vegas. Last night Petra and I wanted to pay our respect to the victims and those left behind. We went to our church for a silent prayers and lit a few candles. Now those close to us know that we are no church people and even are not members of a congregation, but there is no better place in our town than the peaceful atmosphere of our church for thoughts of sadness, but also deliverance. It´s not a really old place of worship, being built in 1874 on the site of the first church, which was erected in the 11th century. Yes, our little community was founded over 1,000 years ago!

Today is a day of mourning, so we will pause in our tour of Switzerland.

I hope you´ll understand.

Ken - while replacing a heart valve is a routine job nowadays, there are many more risks involved when the patient is a person in his 80s. Being "off-line" for quite a few hours can result in a deprivation of oxygen to the brain. While not being lethal, it can change the patient´s personality, who may show signs of vascular dementia - similar to Alzheimer. I have gone through that with my mom and I have heard of a number of other cases just recently.

Better to get prepared for a job change!

Hey all, I tried to do some model railroading today, but my heart just wasn't in it today.  Don't know if it was over vegas or the fact Tom Petty is gone-huge musical influence, up there with Bruce Springsteen- but I only ran a lap around the club today.  Of course, I could be just feeling generally down again.

Last Friday night I helped install a new vinyl floor into the bathroom- It was the bare sheet wood, so the flooing has needed replaced for years.  Just need to do caulking now.  About 57 days until the 2017-2018 open house season for the Mid Mon Valley Model Railroad Club, where has this year gone? Although with the grief this year has given me, I'm ready for 2018 haha.

Hope everyone is doing well.
