I was just wondering who are the top 5 people who have been members of this forum the longest. I've been here 14 years and seen many come and go.

I've been around a couple weeks now, mostly lurking. Nobody knows me but I feel as if I know ALL the top guys 'cause I read the forums religiously.
A lot of the top people have also passed on. Read the forums from as far back as you can and you'll get a sense of some of the fantastic modeling from the past. A few names that come to mind are Wolfgang Dudler, Jeffrey Wimberly, good heavens... I could go on for hours.

I know we have not heard from V8-Vega for a while or TomikawaTT or a couple of others whose names escape me right now.
The trouble with a forum that has so many geezers on it is when one of them suddenly goes to the roundhouse in the sky, how would we know. While I enjoy the interaction with others that have the same interest, I often think of this cartoon as I have never met in person anyone from the forum.
I do know that I really appreciate all the help I have received over the years from many, not just the top five.

Looking back at the oldest posts on the MR Forum, you see a lot of "Anonymous," which means those members have left the Forums and their accounts deactivated. Most of the posts with names still attached are people who haven't been active on the Forums for a long time. The oldest name I could find that I recognized is Gerry Leone, who has been a Forum member since January 2001. Since the oldest posts on the Forum are from February 2001, that's going to be a hard record to beat.

I know the person with the most posts, by a HUGE margin, was Jeffrey. Back in the days when there was a post count on the right side. I think I was second, but WAY behind Jeffrey. Then I was away for a few years. I doubt anyone has ever caught up to him.
I actually HAVE managed to meet a couple of people from here, at train shows. Once I get building again, anyone is welcome to come over and help. Just call me Tom, as in Sawyer...

It looks like you and I came on the forum around the same time. Wow! - Hardly seems like it's been 14+ years but...I guess it has.
I've met a few forum members here through the two annual train shows in my area and have enjoyed putting faces to names. Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to add Randy and Crandell to the list.

RR_Mel I retired in 2007 and took a year off doing nothing, I felt like after working 49 years and 10 months I needed some rest.
Thank you so much for saying this. I retired last April and have been worried about how little ambition I have.Maybe I just need a rest after supporting myself since 1973.

I'm in western PA every year around Christmas. I forget exactly where you are. I usually get to the Cranberry Mall to the train show there - that was the club Bob H (cmrproducts) belonged to. Mostly I just went to have a bull session with him. Usually grabbed a Walthers structure kit or two as well, just so I didn't take all his time for nothing. He was always working on some structure or other, scratch built, for his personal layout.
Ken, thanks for providing that list. I didn't know that some of those had passed....and yes, may they rest in peace. All fine people, near as I could tell.

Give me a heads up if you are over this way around Christmas again, Randy. Would love to touch base. I'm about an hour twenty NNE of Cranberry and would gladly make the drive.
Also, if are in that area and you haven't visited it yet, the Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum in Gibsonia has an open house in November & December that definitely is worth your time. Beautiful and impressive layout of the Western Maryland between Cumberland and Pittsburgh. Hobby Express on SR 228 is also a good stop on your way in or out of town.

Hopefully your mind IS for rent (or still free) because I'm pretty sure your DCC/electronics advice has prevented me from blowing up my basement at least three times.

Not every "Anonymous," is a member who left--I was on the forum starting about 2003, and somewhere along the way there was a forum update, and my account was deactivated. I've drifted in and out over the years. Every now and then I run into one of my old posts when using the search function.

Some years ago a very fine modeler named Bob Grech posted pretty often. He must still be a member because his posts are not "Anonymous" but it is some time since he showed us pics of his careful craftsmanship (and fine photography skills).
You know you are a Forum "old timer" when you have one of the Trains.com "Forum Member" t-shirts that one-time moderator Erik Bergstrom offered for sale. I still have mine. Speaking of Erik, there is another guy who seems not to have posted once he left the employ of Kalmbach Publishing. Yet he was a fine modeler and an avid railfan and I have to think has kept a hand in the game.

DonZ, UKGuy, Big John (forget his username)...some of our older members have 'graduated' and moved up to forums where the level of modeling is very high. I think Dave Vollmer did that, but in N scale.
