Good morning ...

The forum was closed for some reason earlier. Hopefully, everybdy starts to come in now. ...

Ray ... The annual strawberry festival sounds fun.

Ken ... Glad to hear you had a good day yesterday.

Ulrich ... I certainly wish I could see the big train layout display in Hamburg .. Maybe some day ...

Dennis Old School .... Thanks for show the scenic view. If I ever get back to NS, I would like gofing I think.

(I'm copying the following comment from my post in the other forum.)

I'm very concerned about my good model railroad friend, Dan, who is one of the three model railroaders here at the lake. Dan has cancer of the esophagus and some of his stomach. Tomorrow morning he is having very difficult surgery. Doctors will remove the esophagus and part of his stomach. They will build a new esophagus by extending the healthy part of his stomach all of the way up to his neck. Some of the surgery will require puncturing a lung. If all goes well, he will be recovering in the ICU for the following 2 or 3 days. Next, he will be recovering in the hospital for a while. When he comes home to recuperate, he will be on feeding tubes and can never sleep laying flat. He will sleep sitting up. Eventually, he should be able to swallow and the feeding tubes would then be removed. The surgery will be at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. Needless to say, Dan is in my prayers.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Jan, Brent and I will have a Crown Royal on the Rocks please. Give Old School Bus a glass of what ever he likes. Welcome

Over All A Darn Good Day!

Work Front It was sloooow again today with only 3 customers! But all 3 bought to the tune of $3510.00! Big Smile Now that is my kind of day! Made a extra $245.00 in spiffs! If I could count on 4 days a month like that I have way less worry in my life.

Blood Sugar Front.  Woke up with a reading of 91 so I was happy and well shocked. I was bad yesterday. By 11:45 it had rasied to 182 and again I had not eaten? Had a sausage at 11:45 (7 Grams of carbs) at 2:25 had half a can of spinach (6 grams) and was not hungry the rest of the day? Tested my blood surgar when I got home and was only at 117 and I felt good!

Not sure what my A1C will be next time but it will be lower! All so lossing weight, have moved to belt notches to where I was working at NTB.

Trains are running Great! Running all F units tonight. Mighty CB&Q's, Might Strange B&O F7's and Santa Fee Warbonnets. I like F units!

 Later Ken

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!  Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me tonight.... Been a very long but fun day. Had to be over to my son's house by 11:30 to get my granddaughters off the bus.  Good thing got there when I did as they were 10 minutes earlier today than yesterday... Tomorrow is the last day of school for the year for them.

I took them out for lunch for a treat.  Went to my favorite hangout owned by a former gym teacher and the Mother of two of my favorite students.  Her son was one of my Scouts way back when and her daughter, one of my best singers in the Middle School.  Her son was the first person in Geneva to have solar panels on his roof, and the daughter now owns her own restaurant in town.  The owner came over to meet the girls and chat as did a couple former students from way back when.....  We then came over here and they helped me laod some sound equipment into the car before heading to play some Wii games.  Then one of the Scouts from the Handicapped Troop I am commissioner for came over to help me load that speakers and amp into the car.  As soon as my DIL showed up for the girls we headed down to church.

Why were we doing all that?  Tonight was the annual Strawberry Festival at church.  It is a major community event and has been for almost 50 years now.  I have supplied the sound for it for about 25 years.  Only major event I do any more.  The kid working for me wouldn't accept any pay but did ask if I would DJ his Graduation Party for him in a year.  Wanted to know what it would cost...  I told him that if he finishes his Eagle (should be done this summer) I would do it for free!  He was one happy kid when he left.  He hopes to end up at RIT in a few years after he attends the local community college.  Since he is very interested in learning sound, I told him that both colleges have a fine Audio programs that he could look into as a minor.

Anyway, after getting half of the stuff put away tonight (will finish tomorrow) I am beat!  Should sleep well tonight.

Squash has germinated in the garden as has the radishes and some other items.  At the moment it is looking good....

Steven, Oooooo, Chicken and Dumplings!  That is food good for the soul....  That used to be a special Sunday treat once in a while on the farm when I was a kid.  Also a great way to use an old hen that no longer was laying eggs. Smile, Wink & Grin  That and fricasseed chicken. (had to cook the daylights out of it to make the old thing tender, but....) Only time I didn't like that was dad made me go catch the chicken.......  At least living on a farm we ate well!

OldSchool, did you hit your drive way in the rough or what?  Nice scenery!

Take care out there!

Golfed today in my layout area of Walton. Will have to include an HO scale golf course along the Minas Basin cliffs. The tide was out in the Bay of Fundy when I went for a round. Here are a couple of pics showing the amazing scenery.

MW sports 75,000 sqft. of space, with over a third of that eventually being occupied by the layout, once the sections planned up to this date have been built.

My guess is that NY is by the by far more expensive location than HH. Nevertheless, $126 admission for a family of 4 compares to a much friendlier $45

At 50,000 square feet, GG sounds significantly larger, and remember, that's Manhattan real estate, very expensive.  I've never been there, so I can't comment on how much of that space is devoted to models and how much is things like gift shops and snack bars.

You're lucky to park for the day for $36 in New York City.  Everything is very expensive there.

Sir Madog

I received my July copy of MR in today´s mail.

While leafing through it, I was shocked to see the announcement for yet another copy of Hamburgg´s Miniatur Wunderland, this time called Gulliver´s Gate. I just wonder what they do better than the Hamburg original to justify an admission charge of a whopping $36, which is 3 times the admission you have to pay in Hamburg?

Is it just the downtown Manhattan location? From the pictures I saw on their homepage, they have yet a lot to learn from the folks in Hamburg!

My guess is, they offer a chance to see a large train display without the expense of flying to Europe. Whistling

Also, Miniatur Wunderland doesn't own a patent on the idea of a large model train display.

Steven .... I certainly would like to see Miniatur Wunderland. You are right they don't own a patnet on a large train display. ... I am familiar with EnterTrainment Junction near Cincinnati which once was featured in an article in MR. It is an incredible, multi-million dollar G Scale layout.

Dennis of Nova Scotia ... Welcome.... I like NS. My wife and I have been there and would like to return some day. ....

That was not my question, Steven. In fact, Miniatur Wunderland people are very helpful to others setting up similar shows. I find the admission charge of $36 unreasonably high, but that´s only my personal view.

Maybe Neil is in a spending mood and sponsors a trip to Hamburg for you - with a stopover in New York. I´d be happy to give you a personally guided of Miniatur Wunderland - just to compare the two.

They should be able to take off later in the day, when it cools off.  Either that or some can be accomodated on other planes and other airlines.  It's only one class of small regional jets that's affected.

Good Afternoon!

Stopping by to say hello to my friends!

I am still in the dumps, feeling really down and low these days. While looking for a little dream to hang on to, I found my absolute dream place where I would love to spend my days with Petra until the grim reaper parts us.

It´s a little house on the Danish island of Falster, located in the Baltic Sea, somewhere on the way from Germany to Copenhagen (also close to a steam museum line). Just a couple of pictures will show you, why I love this place:

... and a few shots of the interior:

It´s a 1,400 sqft. house with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large family room w/kitchen and a workshop to boost, which could act as a train room.

Asking price is a reasonable $ 92,000, not a lot, but a lot too much for me. My savings will just cover my funeral - what a terrifying thought!

The same house on the Baltic sea coast in Germany would be minimum 5 times that much!

Now I am sad again!

No news on the health front, my right shoulder is getting worse, but I have to wait for a few weeks, before a doctor will be able to look at it.

Have a good time!

Morning all

W**k front a local utility installed a 2" gas main in an area where a house is supposed to go. We gave them cut sheets on the orginal install two years ago. While excavating the house we "found it" Surprise so we staked the gas line out again and asked them to move it to the proper location - there response "pay us to fix our mistake" after a heated argument they moved it without getting paid. We started excavating again and guess what ? We "found" the gas main AGAIN inside the foundation area !!! So we call the utility up and tell them they screwed it up a second time, there response -"pay us to move it" - Bang Head So I informed the VP and he went ballistic on the utility threatening to go to the state corporation commision..... I have a meeting with the utility today and I need some prayers from those that pray that this goes well. The VP is TICKED off and we need this moved or we loose a 1.5 million dollar sale on the house. If that happens I am sure this will end up in court. Thanks in advance.

Dennis - Welcome glad you came in ! Flo set Dennis up with what ever he wants for lunch today. I will pick up the tab. What are Gypsum samples ? Did your house get damaged in the storm ? Was YOH upset with you for not taking shelter ?

Douglas - THANKS ! Well wishes are always appreciated : )

Ricky W - How long is your move delayed for ?

Angel - Glad your funk is over. Thanks for the BD wishes. I have been hearing on the news here about the awful heat.  Try to stay cool my friend.

Henry - That supervisor is NOT SMART. He is putting people under him in danger of loosing life or limb and setting himself up for legal troubles. That is a BAD situation. We had our site hit by VOSHA and the smallest fine they have is $5k and average 30 to 70k

Ken - LOL - Spoken like a TRUE saleman ! I was rolling on the floor. French ?

ROR - What happens to the stranded passengers ? Do they bus or train them out or they stuck in the airport for days ?

DER - Oh. I am glad you are back in the dinner I always enjoy your company.

Batman - Where in the world did they find IV bags on a plane ? Thats not something one carrys around with them. Do you suppose it was in a first aid kit in the plane ? That is a bit unerving caskets in Cosco. I have not seen them in the states in this area.

Drain cock question. In Batmans post is a photo of a sign. One item mentioned in the sign is taht drain cocks cannot be drained at that stop. Why would they not allow that there ?

Tom, Garry, Howmus, Lion ..... hello, hope your day is a good one.

der5997 & old school scratchbuilder - You guys are bringing back some great memories. In the 70s the wife & I spent a week in Nova Scotia. Best vacation we ever had.

All the Trails are still here and are as beautiful as ever. There is a must-see memorial to the victims of Swissair 111 that went down off Peggy's Cove in 1998 - you can view pictures of it online. We had a damaging and deadly hurricane (Juan) in September 2003 that went right over my house in Dartmouth. As a physicist, and expert in acoustics, I recorded the sounds of Juan from my second floor while the rest of the family took shelter in the basement. Published a joint paper with Environment Canada researcher Chris Fogarty who flew through the storm on the hurricane hunter.

Evening Railfans!

Just stopped in to say howdy, collect on the drinks Ken has been buying me, and return the favor a few times. Nothin much goin around yee ole fence post lately. Had a nice long weekend out in the boonies. Quiet.

(boonies... translation = anywhere the internet doesnt exist. Same as boondocks, except no water.)

Saw a few UP units the other day. Which is unusual in the fact that this is NS country (with a smattering of CSX). UP - a very nice change of scenery lets say. Even the horns are pleasing, being different than the local flavors.

Per Railfan requesite  I snapped some pictures, walked along the units, and gave them a good going over visualwise. One unit possessed the scars of what looked like a dynamic brake meltdown. Was an enjoyable 20 minutes.

HerrinChoker - straight tooth gears.

YGW - Happy Birthday to ya my friend!

Have a great evening everyone!

Took the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth then drove the different Trails, stayed in a new town each night. Do they still have the Lighthouse Trail, Cabot Trail, etc? Loved everywhere we went, Peggy's Lighthouse to Cape Breton to the Bay of Fundy. What a great time.

Good evening all.

Flo - I brought some cheesecake for everyone... Can I have a Coke to go with it? Thanks.

Ken - While I appreciate the offer, my family would kill me... And, until I get the layout back up, I couldn't run them anyway. Really nice of you to offer though!

Trains - Yes, the layout is out of commission currently, that is why I have been doing little projects. A upcoming move prompted the layout to be partially dismantled, and then the move got delayed... I have been tempted to reinstall it, but about I get it back finished the move would happen... I might just do it anyways.

W*%k - Sold a "smart" air conditioner unit today... It will link with your smart phone, via an app, and you can turn it on from anywhere there is cell service. Not much else today though.

Everyone enjoy the cheesecake!

Hope all are well, and all have a good day!

I'll be posting progress pics once I'm through with the current loco project, but I can say that since April I've developed the tracks at the turntable and completed the tracks up to the "Tourist Castle" plus roughing in the parts of that castle through which the track run. (That's arches in the curtain walls between two sets of towers) I've also extended tracks away from the turntable towards a yet to be modeled quarry. If all goes well, I'll try to do a video - but it's been a while since I tackled that. Thanks for your interest.

Evening Diners,

YGW- Happy Birthday! Like Mike say yesterday on having the same day. So does my dad he turned 57.

My railroading funk has ended. I'm back to original self.

Sadly it's way to hot and humidity being 102F. Our cooler is generating heat air than cold. The clouds turned grey twice in two evening but I know rail won't be coming down. Maybe next week, this week all sunny.

Enjoying retirement since 2012 and my wife retires at the end of June. In February 2016 I survived a heart attack (runs in my family) and have been getting my exercise hiking along the geologically spectacular coastlines of the Bay of Fundy.

This is my 50th year playing acoustic guitar and I plan to start teaching private lessons this fall to advanced guitarists (students must be able to barre and play in any key without a capo). Also going to start a small business called GypsumWorks Nova Scotia selling stunning samples of gypsum to rock and mineral collectors.

Last week I took up golf again (used to golf in the early 70s) with a group of crazy country golfers from the Walton area, including the owner of two silos full of processed barite from the old mining mill. The golf course borders the high eroding cliffs of the Bay of Fundy and one of the club rules is not to go over the safety fence to look for a ball on the edge. A teacher did this a few years ago and tragically fell to his death when the cliff gave way underneath him.

Finally, today I acquired professionally bound volumes of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman from 1961 to 1983 - complete for both magazines. Excited to pick those up tomorrow evening.

Really enjoying painting my HO trains. Back to it now.

There is heat, then there is heat. At 11:00 this morning it was already 111F. Yesterday we topped out around 117F and today is supposed to be about the same. I don't care how dry it is, once it clears 110F it is brutal. Yesterday American Airlines grounded their regional jets and cancelled al RJ flights out of Phoenix. The reason? The take-off specifications for the RJs do not go up to these temperatures. The hotter the air, the thinner the air. The thinner the air, the longer it takes for a plane to get off of the runway. Without the specifications, the planes are prohibited from taking off. They can land, but they can't leave. Tomorrow is supposed to be a degree or two cooler, then it will drop a few more degrees on Thursday.

Still looking for the exit ramp from retirement...

Good morning from an unusually muggy West Coast.

Had to get up early and drive into YVR to pick up my Sister and her husband as they just got back from OZ. That is a very long flight up the middle of the Pacific. They had a medical emergency on the way, a lady had a big drop in blood preasure apparently, however, there were lots of Doctors on board and they had the lady plugged into IVs and feeling shipshape pretty quick, so no need to go down in Hawaii.

My wife and I were flying to Hawaii once and the flight attendant came up tp my wife and said it had appeared that a boy at the back of the plane had broken his arm. My wife informed the attendant that she was a Vet, however, there were no other Doctors on board. My wife told me to come along in case she needed me to sit on the kid.Laugh She immobilized the arm and we carried on to the tropics.

My Sister flys all over the world as a dog show judge and often takes hubby with her. He has a thing about trying to visit Costco's in every country they visit. Well here is a product they sell in the Canberra Costco that they don't sell in Canada. How about in the U.S?

They took a Rail excursion on an old steamer and this sign from 1864 was on the platform.

Kid  got cast in several episodes of a show "Dirk Gently's" We have never heard of it, however, it is quite popular apparently. Considering the amount of work he does in the industry, he watches very little TV. He has to catch up on Netflix so he can know what the show is about and fit in better. This is the first time he has been "cast" and not brought in as an extra. Pay is really good for a kid just graduating high school.

Ed, that sure looks like a beautiful place you have there. We wouldn't be able to keep our Goldens out of that lake though.

YGW and Mike, a belated Happy B-Day hope it was good.

YGW, I always make the wife pay when we eat out just so her side of the credit card bill is pages long while mine only has a couple of tanks of diesel on it.Whistling

It is a very busy week around here with my son's graduation. Three big events happening, including going into Vancouver for the biggy at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre on Saturday night. Whatever happened to just walking across the stage at school shaking the principles hand, having a rubber chicken dinner in the gym and calling it a night.

I must be anti-social.Laugh

All the best to all, stay well.

Ricky:

should change the base color, or just highlight the bearing caps and springs, then grime coat the highlights...
If you're happy with the ungrimed frame as in the photo, I'd leave it be. I've had success with highlighting the springs (actually I made them rusty, which prototypical springs generally aren't, IIRC) The rusty colour made them stand out better, though. Bearing caps should be easy to dry brush. Under the magnification the my Picture Manager gives when one crops a photo, I see that handling over the years has not been kind to the paint on this Well Car's side frames: but you can see the springs. I used a fine brush.

Lunch time !

Flo I have some Ice Cream birthday cake left over please share the rest with who ever wants a slice.

Thank you all for the happy birthday wishes ! Big Smile. I have to brag on MOH. Yesteray she surprised me. I was all set to head home and probably not have much in the way of celebration. BUT she drove an hour to my work place, with my three daughters, then took me to Olive Garden ( I LOVE their salads ) and paid for our dinner. At the end they brought out small aple crisp desert with a candle and sang happy birthday to me - and the table next to us clapped !!! We had a wonderful time.

Henry - Really no safety vest ? The person in charge there is opening themselves up to a good lawyer sueing the pants off of them and possible jail time. Safety is very serious business. In our neck of the woods a supervisor was just sentenced to many years of prison for unsafe working conditions on the job where someone was injured...

Ed - LOl you should enlighten them quick !

JaBear - You are wise beyond your years - it is a dangerous buisness revealing a womens age !

Ken - This year I didnt get cardboard !!! It was very small apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top and I shared it with everyone !

Mike - Happy birthday to you too ! The 19th was a good day with us both being born that day !

Der - glad you are back ! How is things going ?

Howmus - Lunch is on me today if you are hungry. Thank you for your replies in the PM.

Garry, Yannis, JaBear, UP831....thank you all for the birthday wishes.

We have a lot of AWOL people. Who all are we missing ? Like mentioned earlier - V8 Vega, Galaxy, Ulrich...Who elsel do we have missing ???? Maybe we should have a round up ?
