Evenin Folks!

Janie I could use a cup of decaf for now, please.

Ken, I was thinking yesterday that from what you were saying that you actually may not be getting enough carbohydrates and that results in the high blood sugar levels.  As I diabetic myself, I know that what counts is finding the right balance for you.  I have talked many times with my doctor as to why much of the time my sugar is higher when I get up in the morning than when I go to bed at night.  He told me that is because when you wake up, the liver gives you a shot of sugar to get you moving.  If your body doesn't react by being able to give you enough insulin, you end up with a high reading.  Yours has been way out of whack and you actually may be at the point of needing to go on insulin (like my sweet little kitty here).  He will actually come and get me if I forget to give him his needle...  The syringes they have today are very comfortable I hear.  Not hard at all to draw up and give yourself your meds.  Blackie doesn't flinch at all when I give it to him avery morning.  And... Then your insulin and other supplies would be covered.

As far as your coverage not giving you enough test strips......  Anything I might say about that would be VERY political so I won't!!!  I will say that my insurance will only cover what is covered by Medicare and they (to save money) make you buy your supplies at specific places.  There is only one place around here.  That is MallWart..  I do NOT shop at that place, PERIOD!!!  But I can tell you that the supplies are not actually very expensive.  I just looked up what I pay for 2 vials of test strips (100 total) at the small locally owned pharmacy I use.  $18.23....  Whoppie.  They gave me the test kit free as well.  The lancets are also quite inexpensive. Well worth making sure you have and use the system!  I mean, that is what?  A couple six packs of beer?  Which you shouldn't be drinking anyway, and if you are there is your problem!

Good luck with this!

Oh, the whole grains and fresh fruit is what I exist on these days.  Works well for me.  And get rid of the Artificial sugar if that is what you use.  Change to using Stevia as it is a natural product that will not raise your blood sugar.  Most artificial chemical sweeteners will trick the body into releasing more glucose into the bloodstream....  Just my 2¢ worth....  Again, works for me and I even reward myself with a donut once in a while (but cut out any other carbos when I do....).

My A1c has stayed at 5.7 to 5.9 for the last 6 years.  Right where the doc wants it!

73

Edit:  I take a combination of two drugs for my diabetes, Januvia and Metformin.  It is called Janumet (50/1000mg) twice a day.  Luckily I have had no side effects with the meds....

Ken, my doctor started me on Metformin, which got my A1C down fast but otherwise I felt terrible.  The drug did not agree with me.  In fairness, most people have no trouble with it.  I'm now on Glyburide, which works well and does not have bad side effects, although I'm supposed to get plenty of exercise.  I enjoy doing that, but the weather has not been cooperating for months and I hate the gym.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed, Jan, Brent, Tin Can and I will have a Beer please.

Tin Can, funny you showed up today! Happen to be working the PK2000 GP7 you helped me with! Dragging 34 B&O coal cars on the main line with a C&O RSD 2 has a helper.

 VA Health Care. Sigh

Good News I have lost 2.5 pounds in 14 days. Big Smile This morning my Glucose was only 84!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Big Smile

Dietitian All most as confused now as I was before I saw her!

1 Said I was stariving my self! She thinks I need 40 carbs for each meal so 120 a day. If I have 20 carbs my sugar level goes too 200?

2 Need to eat more whole grains and fruit. I agree with that!

3 Set new Glucose Goals. Wants no higher than 130 when I wake up and no more than 160 after eating 2 hours later. All so my liver will make Glucose if it think's my sugar level is low if I don't eat. (that explains the level jump with out eating)

 Bad VA Health Care?

Seems it is cheaper to Burie Vets than keep us a live!

1 Due to budger cut backs I cannot get more than 50 test stips for 90 days. Unless I am on Insulin? If it was under control I be OK with that, but it was not with the last A1C beinging 8.7! Thought the goal was to stay off Insulin?

2 Due to budger cut backs I may not beable to get anymore Diabtic Shoes unless I am on Insulin?

Funny, when I joinded the Military while we still had boots on the ground in Vietnam I was not told "You get free healht care for life unless it cost to much!" Boy that would be a selling point for me!

Some what PO Ken Posting again!

Just got back from a whirlwind trip to NYC and San Antonio.  I had a conference there last Tuesday through Friday; flew back to Houston, then drove to San Antonio because my wife had a coaching clinic there through Sunday.  Got to see the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and took a harbor tour.  Lots of good food.  Rode the subway.  Lots and lots and lots of people. Everything is expensive. Went to Red Caboose hobbies; it was an interesting shopping experience, to say the least.  Saw several things I wanted to buy, but they were stapled to displays or walls with construction staples.  Did find a couple of Santa Fe passenger cars I needed, so I didn't walk away empty handed.

Spent a couple of hours at Dibbles in San Antonio; found detail parts and some HO and N cars that I think I needed.  Ate some good Italian and Mexican food, and got some rest.

Been catching up at work this week.  It does not pay to be gone.

On a happier note the wife and I are celebrating our 50 wedding anniversary this coming weekend.

Two comments: First, congratulations on the anniversary. Second, I am pleased to hear you see the anniversary as a "happier note." It sounds like it is not just fifty years, but fifty good years.

Dave - Good luck with the clubs new location. Has there been any progress on new officers?

Garry - Have a safe trip & enjoy yourselves.

Later this morning I'm taking the wife down to Wheeling Island Casino. We haven't been there for some time, and she does enjoy the slots. I do too, but I enjoy the buffet even more. With her limited vision, it's one of the few things she can do without a lot of assistance. We have been going to casinos for about 10 years now. Mostly we have played on their money. Right now I think we are about $200 in the hole. Not bad when you consider the cost of other avenues of entertainment. Now let's see if I'm still this optimistic when we come home this afternoon. Speaking of entertainment, the wife has had season tickets to the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera for over 30 years. But she gave them up this season. I think she wasn't able to see much of anything that was happening on stage, & the tickets were getting pricey. I figure I can use that money & let her play the slots. I think we will both miss the productions though.

Congratulations to all those coming up to their 50th anniversarys. We are closing in on the 55th in a couple of years. It's been a good run & I was extremely lucky the day I first spotted her.

On the club front, the Barrie Allandale Railroad Modellers now officially have a new club house!!! The lease is signed and the necessary insurance has been arranged. We will pick up the keys on Wednesday or Thursday. We have arranged to move the majority of our stuff on the Saturday after next.

The next few weeks will be interesting. We don't have a layout plan yet. There is some support for modelling the Barrie Allandale station and surrounding trackage as part of the layout. The station is a beautiful turn of the century structure which has been restored to its original glory. The main reason for modelling the Allandale Station is that there might be an opportunity in the future to move the club into the station, so if we have a model of the area trackage that might add to our attractiveness as a tenant.

The layout need not be limited to just the Barrie Allandale station. In fact, limiting the layout to just the station and surrounding tracks would likely make for a rather boring layout operations wise. We would be much further ahead to model the trackage both north and south. To the north there is the major shipping port of Goderich, as well as the CN and CP tracks that went to Sudbury. To the south there is the Holland Marsh which is famous for its vegetable growing and which was heavily serviced by railroad in its heyday. Further south again is Toronto. The possibilities there are endless. In fact they are daunting!

Things are looking up for the club! As some of you are aware, for a long time we have been trapped in a horrible situation where there was no room and the fumes and the dust from the woodworking shop we were housed in were often intolerable.

Onward and upward!! (with a reasonable grade of course!).

Thanks for listening!

Cheers all!!

Good Morning!

No signs of Summer in my neck of the woods. After a short spell of nice and reasonably warm weather, wer are back to the usual wet & windy "Schietwedder", which is so typical for northern Germany.

I could certainly use some nicer weather to drag me out of the dumps, in which I seem to be anchored down firmly now. I don´t seem to participate in life, with nothing to look forward to.

James - congratulations to the "50". Petra and I are only two thirds down that road, which seems to be already a rare achievement in today´s "modern" partnerships - something we called marriage a generation ago. My parents made it up to 62 years.

On a happier note the wife and I are celebrating our 50 wedding anniversary this coming weekend.  To celebrate we are taking a two week tour of England.  Looking forward to seeing where my ancestors came from as all of my father's side of the family were of English decent.  One of the places I am looking forward to visiting is the British Railway Museum in York.

Hi Jim,
Congratulations on the big 50.  Thats wonderful and goes to show what a tolerant couple you two are.
My wife and I will hit 44 this November and really it has felt like it went quite fast.
Glad you are going on a second Honeymoon, but don't dilly dally in London or Paris.  We sure want you back here safe and sound.
My wife and her siblings are going to Demnark, Norway and Sweden this fall.
Cody, my dog and I will stay home, but may go down to Billings for awhile during that time as well.
I think I have made up my mind to finally retire before then after four attemps.
I think at 76+ you should be able to take a few years off,  Don't you ??
Sleep well, I'm on my way home after an evening shift tonight and I feel my pillow calling.

Congratulations on reaching the 50 year milestone. There are many couples that don't reach that milestone. My parents reached their 43rd in April.

Flo or whoever happens to be handy: Could I get a creme de menthe (non-alcholic, of course) ice cream sundae with some graham crackers crumbled in it? (Just sounds good tonight for some reason.) Thank you so much.

Hobby Front:
A few more projects that I was able to complete this afternoon with befores and afters.

Among the items I got yesterday was a set of Woodland Scenics retaining walls that had been on the order list for quite awhile. I got a base coat of the paint that I use for my retaining walls (Apple Barrell Sndstone acrylic paint). Originally, I was only going to use two of the three but I decided to use all three on the curve. The retaining are glued to the foam with some Liquid Nails construction adhesive. I will need to put another coat of paint on the walls come next week.

The other project I was able to get finished was to push a coat of what I term "mush" on one of my hills. (For those who have been here awhile know what I am talking about. For those who don't, "mush" is ground up newspapers.)  Took three batches to finish this. On one of them, I actually temporarily "broke" the blender. The gear that mounts to the blender base to drive the blade came off. Thankfully I found the gear on the floor under the layout and was able to reinstall it.

The other thing that sometimes I have commented on is the amount of cars and engines that I have collected over the years. I decided to take a picture of the table where I keep most of the equipment. (There are some items that are sitting on the layout and aren't kept on the table. Four switchers and about 8 freight cars.) I have no idea how long this table has been on the ranch. It was used for a business that operated at the ranch for many years. (Ironically enough, the building where I have my layout was built as part of that business.) We left that business in the early 90s. This is at least the second life of this table and I have had it for around 25 years. (I hijacked it and no one ever said a word about it.) Nothing spectacular, but it does the job.

Ignore the lamp sitting on the car boxes. The lamp is probably even lighter than some of the cars and engines that I have. That's another thing that I've had forever. For exactly how long, I don't remember! (Although if memory serves, I think that was something that my late Grandmother got for me. She passed in 2001 and I'd had it for a few years before that.)

Good evening to all.  Been really busy so far this month as I am trying to paint the house again.  It has been seven years and the old dutch milled siding only seems to retain paint for about seven years and then starts to peel.  Frank was lamenting about getting things done when you are 75 yrs old.  I will be there in about eight weeks.  YGW doesn't like working off tall ladders.  Seven years ago it was no big deal but now I really feel it in my knees when I climb.  So far the painting has been confined to a seven ft. step ladder.  My 28 ft extention ladder is at more daughter's house fully extended with the rope rotted off.  It is going to be a chore getting it down on the ground safely.

My step-mother passed away Monday at 93 yrs.  We had been expecting her passing as she has had severe dementia for some time.  Heading for northern Iowa for the funeral this Saturday.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A nice slice of apple pie, and a Coke please. Thanks.

Ken - Hope your sugar issue gets better!

YGW - Getting more and more done I see.

Frrykid - Nice job on the projects.

Ulrich - Hope all is well, and enjoyed the train vids the past few weeks.

angelob - Hang in there!

Hello to all the others I have missed.

Weather - Damp, and cool(ish). 65-70 today, and tomorrow. Warming up for the weekend though.

W**k - Decent day today, but the truck was a royal pain... They double stacked a bunch of stuff, and the yard tractor was shoved up against the trailer wall. The tractor pallet then broke halfway into the building... Yep. One of those days.

Trains - Saw a very interesting mixed freight the other day on NS. It contained two log cars (in NW PA!?!), coil cars, standard box cars, covered hoppers, two TopGon cars, covered hoppers, a few bathtub gons, several gons filled with scrap, tank cars, a single autorack, and a string of empty well cars, followed by more mixed freight cars of mixed box, covered hoppers, and tanks.

Too bad I wasn't recording this!

And, now, for the joke tonight...

Steve - I see your "reading dog" and raise you a blonde.

(Apologies to any blondes in the diner... Nothing personal, just your standard blonde joke.)

"A blonde, brunette, and a red-head, robbed a bank. The police were hot on their trail, when the three of them ran into a barn, and hid in potato sacks. When the police entered the barn, they couldn't see the three suspects, only three potato sacks.

Three officers, splitting up, went to each of the sacks. The first officer using his baton, tapped the sack in front of him. It had the brunette.

The brunette, thinking fast, started meowing and hissing.

The second officer also tapped the sack in front of him, and the red-head, also thinking fast, started barking and growling.

The third officer, following the lead of the first two, also tapped the sack in front of him. This one contained the blonde, and the three were captured.

Why???

Well, the blonde, also thinking fast........

(Dramatic pause here......)

Yelled........

POTATOES!"

Smile

Yes, I will leave now.

Hope all are well, and all have a good night!

Well.....  Deep Subject....  Evenin' folks!  Hello???  Hello???  Anybody here?  Oh, Hi Janie!  Glad to see the place is still open.  Pretty slow day here I guess.

I could use a cup of decaf about now before I head to bed.

Been a long day.  Had to get up early and give Blackie his insulin about an hour early (and get their morning food) as I had to be at my sister's house about the time I normally get out of bed.  I had the "honor" of transporting her to the Rochester Airport so she coud head to a college friends house down in South Carolina...  She goes down there to harass, ah, see them every Spring.  They never come up here though.  Guess who also gets the "honor" of taking care of her cats while she is down there correcting all their misconceptions about the world at large???  I really don't mind as I do enjoy her kitties and it gets me away from the house several times for the week she is gone.  My SIL who was a best friend of hers in High School will be filling in for a couple days as well.

Later in the day, I got two of the three large raised bed gardens rototilled with the small electic tiller I have and built a screen for the bed that has the peas in it.  Oh!  Seems that the dern Bunny Rabbit living under the shed had lunch on my newly sprouted peas sometime in the last few days!!!  Grrrrr.....  Anyone have a recipe for Hosenpfepper?  Ulrich?  Anyway, I took some old screen left over from when I first built the raised bed gardens (for underneath) and created a fence around the small bed.  Will see if that works.  The string beans and the onions are doing fine.

Bought a quart of white paint so I can paint some door molding trim for at the top of the basement steps and get it finally installed.  The moulding has been sitting down cellar for about 15 years or so waiting for me to get around to cut, paint, and install it.   It now has the first coat of paint and I will give it a second tomorrow.  Plan to install it on Thursday.

I even got a couple feet of track ballasted down there this evening.

Hope you all have a great evening!

Here's an update photo of YGW's Hobby Barn!

This weekend we made tremendous progress ! On the West end of the Hobby barn we installed all but one sheet ( it was installed Saturday before last) of the exterior synthetic sheathing, the horizontal trim on the gable, the frieze board on the gable end and almost all of the batten boards. Plus we had to rip up all of the batten boards and trim !

This coming Saturday we will install the corner boards on the west end, finish the batten on the front and west end. This will complete the siding. Then it is on to paint prep and prime paint !

I have to ask, YGW... Does the sun ever shine there in Northern Virginia? Whistling
I "doctored" the photo above to brighten it up a bit.
Here's the original:

Now, I know for a fact that the Sun actually DOES shine on Northern Virginia, but as evidenced by the photos you send I'd have to say at least 90% of them were taken on really cloudy, gloomy days!

Have a wonderful Tuesday, everyone!

Respectfully Submitted,

Afternoon Diners,

That was a funny joke, Steven.

I'm being feeling a sad. After posting yesterday and realized one of my friends left. I dunno what happened other than my short bio. Me and them had the same name and lives in NYC.

What happened to people being friends when some or all of them don't share the same interest. I don't have that many friends ( I used to until I went to college and they stop communicating.)

My true friends are Thomas toys that Bachmann makes.

I'll be off line until I little better. Maybe two to three days at the most.

Sure is quiet in here. Let's liven things up with a joke.

A man went into a movie theater and was surprised to find himself seated next to a woman and her large collie dog. Rather than lying on the floor during the movie, the dog sat up in a seat, watched the movie intently, and even seemed to laugh at the funny parts. When the lights came up, the man said to the woman, "It's amazing how your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie!" "I'm as surprised as you are!" she replied. "He hated the book!"

Flo or whoever happens to be handy: Could I get my standard late night order of breaded mushrooms with blue cheese dressing and some raspberry iced tea? Thank you so much.

Hobby Front: Latest batch of projects. (Some finally finished after quite awhile.) As I hoped, all the supplies that I had hoped to get showed up on Monday.

One of the second batch of five BN coal hoppers. These go with the first batch of five which was constructed in 2015. Both batches are MDC/Roundhouse Thrall Gondolas. These five started out as Union Pacific lettered purchased this spring. I used 2000-grit sandpaper to remove the old lettering as the paint stripper I tried didn't do anything to the lettering. Both batches are equipped with Adair Shops weight kits. Both batches used a lot of different decal sets (all Microscale): 87-251, 87-1377, MC-5002, MC-4280, MC-5033 (on non-pictured side of car) and MC-5034. The second batch used the 80" logos from the 251 set and required the logos I didn't use from the first set of cars as they were already lettered for BN. Paints used on the second batch are Humbrol 33 (on the weights inside) and 34. The first batch used Tamiya paints. This second batch are equipped with Kadee 148 couplers. I presume the first batch uses #5s. (Those were already equipped with couplers when I bought them.) The only issue I have with this second set is I haven't found a set of loads in my budget for this second batch.

This is a model of an NP 40' combo box car. It is what I was told is an Accurail car. (bought on eBay.) The walkway was removed and the holes plugged. The sill was also fixed as it was notched rather than the even in the prototype. The endrails were replaced with custom bent .020 wire. The stirrup steps were also replaced with some Detail Associates ones (6414) as the originals were too big. The stock scheme on the car was the original for the car, which was too old for my era. It was repainted in Model Master British Crimson. (Suggested match for the old Floquil/Polly Scale Red Oxide.) The decals are a combination of the following sets (again all Microscale): MC-4109 (which is OOP. Another rare eBay find.), 87-37, 87-1377, MC-5002, and MC-4280. The light weathering is done with Humbrol RC 402. The couplers are Kadee 148's.

This is another NP 40' car. This one is a Roundhouse release. I've had this one since last fall. The color is stock. The sill was also changed as the prototype was straight. The walkway was removed and the holes plugged with a set of Details Associates 6224 Roof Plugs. The logo was changed to the larger one as the stock was the smaller one of the older scheme. The repainting was done with a mix of GN Glacier Green and some White. (I had previously has a nightmare finding the right color.) The reporting marks and weight data was replacced as the font was wrong. The end numbers were also redone. The NP lettering was left intact as I decided I could llive with it. The item centered under the car is a cleaner unit from eSPee-Track-Cleaners. (Yet another eBay item.) Decal Sets used: Microscale MC-4109 (the end numbers and some of the road number), 87-37, and Herald King's ACI Set. If memory serves, the couplers are 148s, too.

I still have one more caboose project, which is waiting for paint, which is also on order.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Jan, Brent and I will have a Beer please.

Work sort of Front. Well I had a good nap and got some reading done! Big Smile Had a POS Lay-A-Way with $20.00 down. But that is OK, the Lady had two things I really enjoyed looking at and I was content! Whistling O-scale B Units! Wink

Blood Surgar Front. Tuesday I am either drink De Caff Coffee or maybe none at all. Readed another study on coffee on rasing blood sugar. Sounds like that maybe what I have happening. It would suck if I have to give up Coffee but if it helps?

Ed that photo sure out a smile on my faces! Laugh  You have ideas on the dirty sound from the B&O's? I only opened the A-Unit and missed wired it speaker, not the B Unit.

 Later, Ken

What is going on here?  It's June and it's 51 degrees?  And raining?  How am I supposed to get any exercise?

Had a very nice beach vacation with my girlfriend.  We had a couple of nice sunny days, although a couple of those were cold and windy.  We had a lot of fun finding new brew pubs to eat and drink at.

Here's an interesting story I found in response to a question from a reader...

You might have seen this photo before on the Internet, usually with some kind of "haw haw those morons don't know how trains work" comment. I did a reverse image search on the picture, and turned up an article about the photo. Turns out it was staged by some firefighters in Belgium as a joke. Apparently, after putting out a small fire, the firefighters thought it would be funny to stage this photo and share it to Facebook. It got thousands of shares all over the world. Turns out they weren't so dumb, after all.

The page does include a video, though, of what happens to firefighers who DON'T take proper precautions around train tracks.

As Paul Harvey used to say, "And now you know

Good day."

Hey again guys,

My Amtrak train was going to be the Sunset Limited or the Southwest Chief. It turned out the train was to long. When the train went to the curve I still have Superliners making the turn. I thought I never be able to a short Amtrak consist.

Until today I realized there was a short Amtrak train going though the desert. It's been discontinued for 20 years. The Desert Wind.

Don't worry about the layout era it's going to between 1980s-1996.

Layout

Testing the track plan with a small local. Theirs also a auto rack intermodal train and Amtrak.

Layout 1

Here's the layout being secured outside. I had it outside one night so the caulk can hold on to.

I cut the foam afterwards earlier in the morning yesterday and stored it under the bed. Now I'm planning for a few months ago about getting a bed skirt. To show the dogs that no trespassing beyond that point when toys try to go under or themselves.
