'Evenin, Folks

Snow? Not such a big deal here. Our average runs about a hundred-ten inches per season.

No worries...

Regards, Ed

Ed, we have, I am sure exceeded that, for being mid way across the state, we get a LOT of lake effect snow, this year in DEcember we were about tied with Syracuse at over 60" {five feet}, and hadn't really gotten into winter yet.

It started EARLY here, hte winds carrying snow here all along. It averaged 3-4" almost every other day here, whcih was easy enough to keep up with, but 3 feet in less htan 24 hours was no way to keep up.

The total for the year will come out later, but its at least 110 inches, compared to an extrememly NICE winter last year, with about 20" all season because the Jet stream was nice to us all winter long.

BTW GUYS: the Mounds you see in the front of the house by the vehicles in MY pics, ARE NOT bushes or furniture, they are previous mounds from trying to keep up with it yesterday!!! The black thing out back is a BBQ grill [near the chain link fence}.

snowmageddon is NOT over and done  with us yet. we are expecting another 4-8" tomorrow and today we got another three AFter we got the guy to dig us out, which hte red car is still plasetered in on the other side. MOH will take my minivan tomorrow, I will try to dig out more, OR keep up with new falling snow, and we'll see if we can get the red car out tomorrow.

How's my back? well lets put it this way it got so painfull, I saw throught the pain and worked with it, no choice, a little adreanalin probably helped too.

LOL I WAS SUPPOSED to see the neurosurgeon today, but they called to cancel of course by robocalling.

At least this one didn't "sit and spin" like many Noreaster's do.

I will call 2-1-1 {# for FIRST CALL FOR HELP IN ANY AREA ACROSS the USA, for things OTHER than 9-1-1} tomorrow and see if I can get those big strong burly Nat'l guard men to come do the city sidewalk. and maybe dig out the red car. first thing tomorrow.

GOv. Cuomo said he wasn't going to estimate or worry about he cost now, nad it will probably include flooding clena up later, he was going to "git er done" then tally up. Smart Man.

well I will try to get some sleep, tomorrow is another day.

stay safe adn warm, prayers for all who need them

Good evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a warm cup of Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

We didnt get hit with as bad  a snowfall as they said we were.  Or at least it doesn't seem like it.  Some of it is starting to melt already.

Ride On:  You had asked about software to design your house with.  First, I can only recommend that you team up with a licensed Architect.  That said, most design software for that purpose runs in the $3000 per license range.  However, Chief Architect makes a software called "Home Designer" for around $100.  I really don't know anything about it, but if it's like it's regular design software, it should be pretty good.  There may be others, but I'm not really sure aware of them.

hope that helps.

Hello to everyone and I hope everyone is ok, safe, and warm.

Good evening all.

Chloe - A hot cocoa please. Thanks.

Just checking in briefly...

Galaxy - You got more snow than me.... Regretfully congratulating you for that... (Only because I don't think you want the congratulations....)

Weather - While Stella is over and done here, the cold and wind are not... We ended up with about 15-18" of the fluffy white stuff, now the cold wind is blowing it all around... But man is that cold wind wicked! Bad enough to take your breath away!

W**k - Slow.... Slow.... Slow.... Had two people all day... But the last one bought a snowblower... (Big surprise people were looking for those. Wink) So, at least it wasn't a total waste... I ended up with about $8 in spiffs off of that sale. Somehow I ended up with spiff money on Monday, while I was off...Question Only explanation is if it was someone who had spoken to me about a product before, and mentioned my name when they came back...

Well, I'm having some asthma issues, from that cold wind, so I'm off to bed for now.

Maybe I will check in in the morning.

Hope all are well, and all have a good night.

The Island got 18-20" of the white stuff, wind was over 70mph for a period of time, the seas built to 20-28 feet in the bay, decided not to chase codfish. Many years ago had ridden out storms like this one past, one advantage was being able to ride it out in the warm water of the Gulf Stream, did not have to worry about ice buildup.

Birds have hit the feeders and suet today. The Red Bellied woodpecker was about this afternoon taking seed from the deck that I put down for the doves. We have several Robins around, this time of the year they are feeding on the small crab apples, and the sumac heads. Insects, larvae, and assorted small critters use the heads to survive the winter, and the Robins poke through finding food, as well as eating the seed pods. In recent years I have let the Sumac grow around the house and garage to provide a food source for the birds this time of year.

Step son #4 is mending, Dr. is reasonably certain that they removed all the cancerous tissue, lymph glands have shown no signs-which is good. He is to have one more session of chemo--we appreciate the prayers given.

Replaced the pipe on the wood stove, just finished using black stove cement to seal the joints--I have taken a small quantity and made an experimental N-Scale road, at this point it looks like blacktop. It is water base, so it can be tooled for contours.

Lion, enjoyed reading your post. I have bookmarked the other, and will be reading it.

Ulrich, Like the videos, the one with the hump yard is quite interesting. Much thought went into the making of that section of the layout.

A friend of mine who was a commercial fisherman on
Chesapeake Bay gave me his recipe for fried oysters, I have used this to fry clams, scallops, and fish fillets as well.

Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix

Drain oysters, reserve liquid---

use oyster juice to make batter with pancake mix, add small amount of milk if necessary to thin batter.

Melt 3-4 pounds of lard is cast iron skillet, (I use a Dutch Oven)

Dredge oysters in flower, (I use a touch of Cajun seasoning mixed in) and then coat with pancake batter.

Fry in lard tell brown, turn over, and when they are brown on the second side, they are done. Same with clams, scallops, and fish.

I wear glasses then cooking as the clams especially, will sometimes pop in the hot lard. I also use a mesh cover over the dutch oven to help prevent burns.

The cholestrol is absolutely horrific---but they taste "wickid good"  I serve all of the above with yeast rolls that I make.

I use both American,(in the river behind the house) and European, (have to go to Sebasco, or Cundy's Harbor to get) oysters to cook with. European oysters raw, have a pronounced iodine flavor that need a extra hit of tabasco to moderate. Cooked this is eliminated.

Prayers for those in need, hope all are warm, dry, secure.

Good evening all.

Galaxy - You got more snow than me.... Regretfully congratulating you for that... (Only because I don't think you want the congratulations....)

Not particularly. But thanks, I guess. I think. Maybe. Well, OK. Perhaps.

Today I will call 211 and see if I can get the Natl Guardsmen to come shovel hte driveway the rest of the way and the city sidewalk. I AM disabled, and get around wiht a cane, after all. But not yet 62, the *magical age* here for getting snow removal help through a program, regardless of disability. I doubt it will work, but can't hurt to try. Big strong young men like I was once, coming to the rescue I hope.

We got a yearly toatl of 121point something for snowfall, and are still expecting another 5 inches over the next few days, even as it warms UP to what is typically our usual low temps. Not necessarily worse than usual, given we get a LOT of lake effect snows, but not in mostly 3 storm falls!

Drifting HAS occurred, even on our driveway.

well, the morphine, codeine backup and lidocane prescriptions are NOT of course doing anything.

I WAS supposed to see the neurosurgeon on Wednesday, but not this one! Have to reschedule. they cancelled, but I was going to cancel anyway. couldn't get out.

We did get out last might to go eat at friendlys as any of hte pizza places weren't open, surprise on that. The main streets are clear and wet, seconds are not at all.that must be what teh extra plows the govenor is sending will get to today.

well, have a great day all.

I will survive, though with a LOT of extra PAIN.

hope all are safe adn warm ad prayers for those in need.

THANKS TO RAY for posting the pics!

Hello all

Geez having a LOT of issues with this forum web site. An entire message just disappeared and the thing wouldnt load three different times !

Hobby front - Roof trusses and carpenters coming Friday. Saturday should be installing trusses and sheathing the roof.

Herrinchoker - Do captains take their boats out in severe storms to "ride out the storms"? Is it safer out than tied to a dock ?

Ricky W - Did you all sell out of snow blowers ?

ROR - I agree with UP831. I would also add hire an engineer who will size the joist, headers etc...all of the structural stuff.

Howmus - Last week we had a large flock of Robins in our front yard. I have always been partial to them.

DER - That makes sense. Our area was settled mainly by the Scotts, Germans and some Irish. I wonder from which of these "vitals" came from ?

Ulrich - Love your visitors. Do they visit often ?

Angel - I am with you I will take snow over desert heat any day !

Garry - Nice photo. What is the name of that train ?

Anyone seen Steve ? Did he get buried in the storm ?

History Qoute of the day :

All men are created equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights, of which they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; among which are the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing the obtaining of happiness and safety.

Good Afternoon!

I am a bit sleepy today! Zoe, I need something strong to keep my eyes open. MAke that dark roast coffee in an IV bag and a handful of chocolate chippers for me, please!

Garry - she´s a beauty!

How about a Working tinplate O gauge hump yard?

I don´t know, but somehow those tinplate trains are very appealing to me. They have a je ne sais quoi which makes my heart beat a little faster.

Ulrich: Be careful! As I understand it your heart shouldn't have ANY startlizations to cause it to beat faster!

I did call 211, I guess they are going to send the Natl guard down to help finish digging me out. not definite yet, though, we will see what teh emergency crew department says, they are supposed to call. Normlly those 62 and over can get help with snow removal but not disabled people like me who get around with a cane. Im about 10 years away form that help, by then I hope we can retire to Georgia IF we stay together, if not, I may just go myself.

Watfching train videos makes me jealous, but I don't think there is more than enough space for about a 4x8 sized layout downstairs. Which are getting harder for me to navigate. Between the torn knee ligaments the labral tear in my rt hip and my back, and hte fact the stairs are steep.

well, I'd best get to doing something whilest I wait.

Hope all is well, the diner seems awfully empty lately.

Maybe I shouldn't hang around, I must smell or something.

Mornin'....  (Yep, still morning as I start this....),

Zoe, just need a refill of my Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee to warm me up...

Been out removing some of the sn*w out in the driveway.  Neighbor over across the street (Exactly the same age as I am) came over and shoveled a path through the 4' high drift left by the city at the end of the driveway for me.  Only problem with the little electric sn*wblower I have is that it is not self driving...  So sn*w builds up on the wheels and bottom and every couple of passes I have to stop tip the thing over on its side and remove the built up ice.  I hope to have the driveway opened up by the end of today.  Don't think I'll need to go over to walk at the Fieldhouse as I'm sure I'm getting plenty of excersize...Whistling

Sun is shining out there at the moment.  Tried to get a bit of the foot+ layer of sn*w off the solar panels.  Got just a small area uncovered.  Will try to work on that later as well.

Catch you later!

Good afternoon all.

Flo - I will take a pulled pork sandwich and a peppermint mocha latte please. Thanks. What's that? Yes, still not quite happy asthma wise.

YGW - Glad you are making progress on the train barn.

Ulrich - Nice vids. (Although in the US, the wood cars would never be put through a hump yard for fear that the load would shift.) Now, if only I had the room for a hump yard.....

Galaxy - Hope they can help you get dug out.

Howmus - I hate when that kind of slush occurs... Almost as bad as "sugar snow" is slippery wise.

Der - Hoping you can get the bridge in and the layout progresses.

Weather - Cold, windy, and snowy... Yep... Same ol' story.

Hope all are well,,and all enjoy the day!

We've got a guy who plows our driveway.  At 150 feet long, it's just too much to shovel, and even with a snowblower it would take me hours.  This is still a bargain year for me in plow bills.  Still, I've got to clear out the last few feet to the garage doors where the plow can't go, and the path to the door of the house.  I did that yesterday, in two sessions with a break in the middle so I didn't overdo it.

I settled in to running some trains last night, and got very bad behavior from one of my GP9s.  "OK," I told myself.  "That thumping as it runs down the track is probably the old cracked axle problem."  I was curious.  The last time I fixed one of these, I just swapped out all of the axles.  This time, having no spares in front of me, I examined the axles under a magnifying glass and actually saw what the crack looks like, and it was then obvious why it was a problem.  I searched everywhere, but could not locate any spares, so I made another late-night purchase on Amazon.

Hey diners,

Charles got into my Model Power and Bachmann stock cars. The Bachmann is ATSF brown and the Model Power is a blue GN. Luckily my blue GN stock car was damaged but I can't say about the Santa Fe. The car is now missing wheels and part of the roof.

I thought of getting another stock car being exactly the same but it seemed that I wouldn't go forward. So I got 1970s Micro-Trains ATSF brown stock car for under $17 with free shipping.

Good Morning,

A dull day here, about 32F and rain expected later today. We might get a few flurries tomorrow but nothing in the way of accumulation. You fellows in the NE certainly got whacked. I can't recall the last time we had a storm like Galaxy had. I don't envy the clean up.

Not much new here. Just waiting for spring. It is too early for the migrant birds but they should start coming in a month or so. We have had a few Canada Geese.

Luckily about half the snow has already melted so hopefully the flood danger won't be too severe.

I was running the RS3 I bought last fall and have to say that it runs very smoothly. At step 1 it creeps at an amazingly slow speed. I had read on the forum that some guys don't like the Athearn RS3 but mine sure runs well. It might be partly due to the TCS decoder. I would like to put sound in it but there isn't much room in the shell. I had a MRC drop-in sound decoder in one that actually worked quite well. In case you are wondering why I had this loco, sold it, and then bought another, the reason is that the first one was decorated for CPR and I sold off all my CP engines. The new one is CNR.

I've started planting trees on the N scale. I think I'll have to buy more but will use what I have.

Time to get going here. Not sure where but something will come up.

Good morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large coffee with gargantuan amounts of cream, please.

Its a sunny 35+ F here, probably very similar to the temp in Waukesha.  I feel sorry for you folks in the northeast who got dumped on with all hat snow.  But, the snow is just an inconvenience unless your roof caves in or something like that.

Ulrich's post liking tinplate triggered a memory.  In Balboa Park in San Diego there's a model railroad museum, which is worth seeing if you're in the neighborhood.  They have operating layouts in O, HO, N, and O-tinplate.  The scale layouts are impressive and the modeling is quite good.  MOH and I were there one day, and there wasn't much going on in the way of operations.  I think a couple of guys were running a train in each scale.  But, the O-tinplate group was there running trains and having a blast.  It didn't seem to matter that the 3 rail curve radii were prototypically impossible, or that the models were more of a suggestion than accurate to the rivets, or that the trains ran at about 150 scale mph.  They were having fun.

No conclusion, just an observation.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

That´s what it is all about!

Now, with my failing eyesight and waning dexterity, being a scale modeler becomes more and more of a problem. With quite a few things I am no longer able to do, I have to find ways of "staying in business", which essentially means simplification. One way, and that may sound a little odd, is continuing down the N scale minni-modular track, as the construction of the mini-modules does not involve any fine or delicated work. The scenery consists of rather roughly shaped foam, painted and a lot of WS coarse clump foliage glued to it. The Japanese style building kits don´t require any glue for assembly, so that´s not more of a job than than shake, rattle & roar the box.

In the long run, however, say a few years from now, that period will end as well. I´ll be enjoying it while it lasts, but I also like to have a plan "B" available. I´d love to have O gauge tin plate - there are a couple of manufacturers in the Czech Republic still manufacturing tinplate trains, but they are manu-factured in the true meaning of the word and therefore not really cheap - more in the region of the rather expensive Marklin HO stuff. Vintage Marklin O  gauge tinplate stuff requires being adopted by either Warren Buffet or your new president. The Deutsche Reichsbahn class 01 Pacific sells anywhere between $7,000 and 10,000 - `nuff said?

My fate is to stay poor, but proud!

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed, Larry Mo and I will have a Beer please.

Been a pretty good day off. While I did not get a darn thing done around the house I did get the State Farm estament and setmment offer on the wifes 2004 Grand Marguis LS. I was all ready for a fight! But I was shock with there offer! If they kept the car as a total we would get $5237.00 - $500.00 for the deductble so we would get $4737.00. Sue wants to keep the car, so we will get around $3800.00. Pointed out a few options they missed like the handling, dual exhaust and tow pakage.

ATF on the rails Train Front! So far it sure look likes it works! The PK 2000 SD7 B&O is running great for 2 days without cleaning. There maybe some merit about using ATF to keep the rails clean.

 Later Ken

Well,

No one hsowed up today. the streets of Binghamtomn are a mess still, some haven't even been plowed.

Maybe tomorrow.

Oficial total at the airport for the season {which is not necessarily representative of the area}, is 131point something, just 2" behind Syracuse.

SO, now today the sun was out, we are in for a slow melt and the original forecast for 4-8" more has disappeared, to 1-2 inches, and even that is questionable. Temps will be in hte melting range, and it IS possible to see where melting has taken place today. But it is still a mess out there.

Saw the thread about another hobby shop closing, sad. But I see the Lionel next door is maybe staying open? I think that show sisgns of new potential in the hobby, those hwo remember the lionel train under the tree at christmas!

nuff said.

No shoveling today.  I did go out for a walk in the cold but sunny and dry weather.

I forgot to mention that my search for axles the other night resulted in a different discovery.  I had bought an Athearn SD-9 at a show that'd I'd forgotten about.  It has no decoder and it has horn-hooks.  I pulled it out and ran it.  It shorts at a couple of tight curves, but otherwise it runs fine.  It's an old, noisy Athearn "meat grinder" drive, so it may not get a top-end sound decoder, but it does run and will get a spot on the roster.

Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Evenin'!

Janie, I could use a cup of decaf and a bottle of ibeprofen please.

Well the driveway is cleaned of sn*w and the car has been dug out of the sn*wbank...  I worked at it all day.  Actually, I would go out and shovel and run the little electric snowblower for about a half hour at a time, then come back in the house and do some other work for about the same time and then go back at it.  Finished getting the car out of the snowdrift it was in about 5:30pm.  Been finishing packing for the NMRA Meet on Saturday most of the evening.  I am going to really feel it tomorrow I think as I am already sore.

This morning, just as I walked out the door, there was a WHOOOSH!  A 8 foot wide by 4 foot long and about 14" deep chunck of sn*w came flying down off the solar panels.  Glad I wasn't standing directly under it when it broke off.  That did clean off 4 of the 18 panels on the roof.  By tomorrow night I would bet the panels have cleaned themselves and will be once again producing power for me.  I had earlier started to work on using the roof rake to pull off a bit of the snow pack.  So I may have started to break the chunk free that came down.

Looks like there will be a bit more white stuff come down on Saturday over in Auburn where the meet will be held, but they are saying only an inch or two and then it will turn to rain...  Hopefully the salt trucks will be out for the drive over and back.  I don't expect it will keep many away from attending this.  The Division is making a very important announcement for this combined event and I'm hoping we will have a packed place.  I have been practicing my clinic tonight as well and set up the projector here to practice it as it will be at the meet.  Haven't used the lastest version of Powerpoint that I have on the laptop yet with a projector and there are some changes in the OS I am using as well.  Good thing I did set it up and found out how it will work....

Hope you all have a great night.  Stay safe and warm!

Ulrich: How about making/selling detailed O guage model buildings and such? that would "keep you in the loop" and graduate to a scale your eyes and dexterity can handle! Remember it's not how you lament what you have lost, but how you use what you HAVE got to use! I've had to learn thta A LOT since my failing body is tormenting me! I've had to figure out how to do things that I used to could do in differing ways. Like walking with a cane and carrying stuff, it's not easy, I've had to learn new ways to do it. AND I cannot carry stuff downstairs, I ahve to throw the laundry down the basement stairs to get it down, and carry only small things in a tote bag down stairs. DO you have any idea how hard it was for me theFIRST time I had to ask for a carry-out at the grocery store? Heavy items must be moved in small batches. Big items, if break-down-able must be done so. To rely on others to help you in times when you USED TO COULD DO THINGS on your own? IT's tough, but we all have to adapt. The steep basement stairs alone challenge me!

Well, hopefully we get another slow melting snow=less day today.

Hope all is well with y'all.

Happy St. Patrick´s Day, Folks!

The nice weather we enjoyed the past couple of days has given way to our usual fare of gray, wet and windy Spring weather, so I will not go for my daily walk today.

I don´t think I am able to produce anything good enough to be sold, but maybe for my own use - one day! Starting any kind of "business" would also mean losing not only my allowance, but also my medical coverage, so that´s a no-no!

I don´t thimk I am lamenting. I may not have fully settled into the new situation yet, but I think I am on my way.

Two hours to go till lunch! Janie, coffee and a brownie, if you please!

Here in Milwaukee, we have too much respect for the art of brewing to dye beer green. So in honor of St. Patty's Day, Brunhilda will be serving up a nice hoppy Irish stout from one of our Wisconsin breweries. (And if you, like me, don't drink alcohol, Sprecher also makes some of the best root beer and cream soda you've ever had.) Bottoms up, lads!

Big Smile

I happen to be a fan of the NP. (My grandfather worked for them and my favorite color is green,) I don't exactly like that scheme (I prefer the "Pine Tree"), but, for today, it works.

Glad to know I'm not the only one in these forums that chooses not to imbibe. Big Smile

Also don't forget that people out there do claim Orange Irish roots. For those of you who are not familiar with that color, the Orange Irish is the Protestant Irish while the Green Irish is the Catholic Irish. As I result, for many years, I have worn something orange on St. Patrick's Day. For the last 10 or so, I pull out a button-down orange shirt for that express purpose. It does generate some questions, but it is part of who I am.

Try to do that in Derry or Belfast and you need to be much quicker than Usain Bolt Whistling

Getting close to political and religious topics here... I don't want to have to come back on Monday and break up any drunken Diner brawls!
