Sort Of Work Front Had a few crazy people drop by. One couple that did not look crazy at first wanted a King Sizes power base (raises your head and feet) for $200.00? Maybe in 1949 but not today! Said they bought one last year for $200.00, told them to go back where they bought that one!
Couple of ladys came in looking for a Twin size power base and mattress for a 100 year old lady? Showed them the lowest prices one we had that was $800.00. Pointed out to me "she is 100 years old, we don't need a good one!"
Gary Like the Green Engine. Some how I don't have a single green engine? Maybe it is because I was in the Army? My clothes where green, some of the food was green, the jeeps where green, heck I was given some Amo that had turn green!
ATF and the Mighty B&O F7's. As I posted for some reason I could not keep the wheels clean on the F7b. Did not become a problem till I moved them to the B line? Strated running them last night on the now treated ATF B line and today not a hick up.

It's been quiet on the HVBL for the last few weeks. We've been dealing with this crazy east coast weather that's had us in shorts and T's, and then next thing we know we're all diggin' for the rock salt and shovel again. I managed to get a few hours in at the dispatch office this week with the guys and talked about some upcoming jobs around town that the mayor wants us to do. More details later but it involves getting some roads down and some clean up work at the north end tunnel.
Just a shout out to the staff at MR on No.1000....Can't say I have a favorite issue but then again I haven't gone thru the boxes of issues my dad collected thru out his years of railroading. I know he has some from back in the early 80's and maybe into the 70's. All I can remember about those older issues was that they seem to be thicker than recent years copies. I really enjoyed reading the time line in the current issue. The hobby has come along way. I was always curious about those folks that simply put up holiday circles around trees just for sake of traditions passed down, but not really subscribers or model railroaders.

Been a busy day around nhere. Ran some errands this morning, went to the Credit Union to take out some "pictures of dead presidents" to have in my pocket for the day tomorrow, stopped down at church to drop off my Pledge $$$, and then stopped at the dollar store to buy a couple things needed for the Meet tomorrow. The afternoon was spent checking and rechecking stuff I need to take to the meet and then packing the Volt for the trip early tomorrow morning. I have 6 dozen donuts fro Dunkin to pick up on my way out of Geneva. Yes we are expecting a large group for the Meet. The President of the Niagra Frontier Region will be in attendance (already in Auburn) as well as some other "Upper Etchelon". I will tell you what's up tomorrow evening...) It has been well hawked in both Divisions, and hopefully the weather will hold off being bad for enough time to have a crowd. I will be presenting the first clinic of the day, so I also spent time rehearsing and timing my presentation. I can just about do it in the time allotted......
Have to roll out of bed tomorrow morning at 5:30 (three and a half hours early for me) to take care of the kitties, get a quick breakfast (take my meds) and head out to pick up the donuts, before heading over to Auburn.
Got up to 42°F today, and I was able to get the solar panels mostly cleared with the roof rake and the general heat of the day. There was a lot of snow on them..... Did make a little bit of electic even.... .1 kWh. Whoopie!!!!

Glad to know I'm not the only one in these forums that chooses not to imbibe.
Also don't forget that people out there do claim Orange Irish roots. For those of you who are not familiar with that color, the Orange Irish is the Protestant Irish while the Green Irish is the Catholic Irish. As I result, for many years, I have worn something orange on St. Patrick's Day. For the last 10 or so, I pull out a button-down orange shirt for that express purpose. It does generate some questions, but it is part of who I am.
Here in Milwaukee, we have too much respect for the art of brewing to dye beer green. So in honor of St. Patty's Day, Brunhilda will be serving up a nice hoppy Irish stout from one of our Wisconsin breweries. (And if you, like me, don't drink alcohol, Sprecher also makes some of the best root beer and cream soda you've ever had.) Bottoms up, lads!

I don´t think I am able to produce anything good enough to be sold, but maybe for my own use - one day! Starting any kind of "business" would also mean losing not only my allowance, but also my medical coverage, so that´s a no-no!

Remember it's not how you lament what you have lost, but how you use what you HAVE got to use! I've had to learn thta A LOT since my failing body is tormenting me! I've had to figure out how to do things that I used to could do in differing ways. Like walking with a cane and carrying stuff, it's not easy, I've had to learn new ways to do it. AND I cannot carry stuff downstairs, I ahve to throw the laundry down the basement stairs to get it down,and carry only small things in a tote bag down stairs. DO you have any idea how hard it was for me theFIRST time I had to ask for a carry-out at the grocery store? Heavy items must be moved in small batches. Big items, if break-down-able must be done so. To rely on others to help you in times when you USED TO COULD DO THINGS on your own? IT's tough, but we all have to adapt. The steep basement stairs alone challenge me!
Well, hopefully we get another slow melting snow=less day today.

Well the driveway is cleaned of sn*w and the car has been dug out of the sn*wbank... I worked at it all day. Actually, I would go out and shovel and run the little electric snowblower for about a half hour at a time, then come back in the house and do some other work for about the same time and then go back at it. Finished getting the car out of the snowdrift it was in about 5:30pm. Been finishing packing for the NMRA Meet on Saturday most of the evening. I am going to really feel it tomorrow I think as I am already sore.
This morning, just as I walked out the door, there was a WHOOOSH! A 8 foot wide by 4 foot long and about 14" deep chunck of sn*w came flying down off the solar panels. Glad I wasn't standing directly under it when it broke off. That did clean off 4 of the 18 panels on the roof. By tomorrow night I would bet the panels have cleaned themselves and will be once again producing power for me. I had earlier started to work on using the roof rake to pull off a bit of the snow pack. So I may have started to break the chunk free that came down.
Looks like there will be a bit more white stuff come down on Saturday over in Auburn where the meet will be held, but they are saying only an inch or two and then it will turn to rain... Hopefully the salt trucks will be out for the drive over and back. I don't expect it will keep many away from attending this. The Division is making a very important announcement for this combined event and I'm hoping we will have a packed place. I have been practicing my clinic tonight as well and set up the projector here to practice it as it will be at the meet. Haven't used the lastest version of Powerpoint that I have on the laptop yet with a projector and there are some changes in the OS I am using as well. Good thing I did set it up and found out how it will work....

No shoveling today. I did go out for a walk in the cold but sunny and dry weather.
I forgot to mention that my search for axles the other night resulted in a different discovery. I had bought an Athearn SD-9 at a show that'd I'd forgotten about. It has no decoder and it has horn-hooks. I pulled it out and ran it. It shorts at a couple of tight curves, but otherwise it runs fine. It's an old, noisy Athearn "meat grinder" drive, so it may not get a top-end sound decoder, but it does run and will get a spot on the roster.

Oficial total at the airport for the season {which is not necessarily representative of the area}, is 131point something, just 2" behind Syracuse.
SO, now today the sun was out, we are in for a slow melt and the original forecast for 4-8" more has disappeared, to 1-2 inches, and even that is questionable. Temps will be in hte melting range, and it IS possible to see where melting has taken place today. But it is still a mess out there.
Saw the thread about another hobby shop closing, sad. But I see the Lionel next door is maybe staying open? I think that show sisgns of new potential in the hobby, those hwo remember the lionel train under the tree at christmas!

Been a pretty good day off. While I did not get a darn thing done around the house I did get the State Farm estament and setmment offer on the wifes 2004 Grand Marguis LS. I was all ready for a fight! But I was shock with there offer! If they kept the car as a total we would get $5237.00 - $500.00 for the deductble so we would get $4737.00. Sue wants to keep the car, so we will get around $3800.00. Pointed out a few options they missed like the handling, dual exhaust and tow pakage.
ATF on the rails Train Front! So far it sure look likes it works! The PK 2000 SD7 B&O is running great for 2 days without cleaning. There maybe some merit about using ATF to keep the rails clean.

That´s what it is all about!
Now, with my failing eyesight and waning dexterity, being a scale modeler becomes more and more of a problem. With quite a few things I am no longer able to do, I have to find ways of "staying in business", which essentially means simplification. One way, and that may sound a little odd, is continuing down the N scale minni-modular track, as the construction of the mini-modules does not involve any fine or delicated work. The scenery consists of rather roughly shaped foam, painted and a lot of WS coarse clump foliage glued to it. The Japanese style building kits don´t require any glue for assembly, so that´s not more of a job than than shake, rattle & roar the box.
In the long run, however, say a few years from now, that period will end as well. I´ll be enjoying it while it lasts, but I also like to have a plan "B" available. I´d love to have O gauge tin plate - there are a couple of manufacturers in the Czech Republic still manufacturing tinplate trains, but they are manu-factured in the true meaning of the word and therefore not really cheap - more in the region of the rather expensive Marklin HO stuff. Vintage Marklin O gauge tinplate stuff requires being adopted by either Warren Buffet or your new president. The Deutsche Reichsbahn class 01 Pacific sells anywhere between $7,000 and 10,000 - `nuff said?

Its a sunny 35+ F here, probably very similar to the temp in Waukesha. I feel sorry for you folks in the northeast who got dumped on with all hat snow. But, the snow is just an inconvenience unless your roof caves in or something like that.
Ulrich's post liking tinplate triggered a memory. In Balboa Park in San Diego there's a model railroad museum, which is worth seeing if you're in the neighborhood. They have operating layouts in O, HO, N, and O-tinplate. The scale layouts are impressive and the modeling is quite good. MOH and I were there one day, and there wasn't much going on in the way of operations. I think a couple of guys were running a train in each scale. But, the O-tinplate group was there running trains and having a blast. A dull day here, about 32F and rain expected later today. We might get a few flurries tomorrow but nothing in the way of accumulation. You fellows in the NE certainly got whacked. I can't recall the last time we had a storm like Galaxy had. I don't envy the clean up.
Not much new here. Just waiting for spring. It is too early for the migrant birds but they should start coming in a month or so. We have had a few Canada Geese.
Luckily about half the snow has already melted so hopefully the flood danger won't be too severe.
I was running the RS3 I bought last fall and have to say that it runs very smoothly. At step 1 it creeps at an amazingly slow speed. I had read on the forum that some guys don't like the Athearn RS3 but mine sure runs well. It might be partly due to the TCS decoder. I would like to put sound in it but there isn't much room in the shell. I had a MRC drop-in sound decoder in one that actually worked quite well. In case you are wondering why I had this loco, sold it, and then bought another, the reason is that the first one was decorated for CPR and I sold off all my CP engines. The new one is CNR.
I've started planting trees on the N scale. I think I'll have to buy more but will use what I have.
Time to get going here. Not sure where but something will come up.

Charles got into my Model Power and Bachmann stock cars. The Bachmann is ATSF brown and the Model Power is a blue GN. Luckily my blue GN stock car was damaged but I can't say about the Santa Fe. The car is now missing wheels and part of the roof.
I thought of getting another stock car being exactly the same but it seemed that I wouldn't go forward. So I got 1970s Micro-Trains ATSF brown stock car for under $17 with free shipping.
We've got a guy who plows our driveway. At 150 feet long, it's just too much to shovel, and even with a snowblower it would take me hours. This is still a bargain year for me in plow bills. Still, I've got to clear out the last few feet to the garage doors where the plow can't go, and the path to the door of the house. I did that yesterday, in two sessions with a break in the middle so I didn't overdo it.
I settled in to running some trains last night, and got very bad behavior from one of my GP9s. "OK," I told myself. "That thumping as it runs down the track is probably the old cracked axle problem." I was curious. The last time I fixed one of these, I just swapped out all of the axles. This time, having no spares in front of me, I examined the axles under a magnifying glass and actually saw what the crack looks like, and it was then obvious why it was a problem. I searched everywhere, but could not locate any spares, so I made another late-night purchase on Amazon.
