Has anyone ever created a model of an EMD SD-18 in HO scale.  I assume this would be a custom job due to the fact that only 114 were ever built and 60 of them were export locomotives.  I guess I should specify low short hood.

Overland Models did C&O and DMIR versions in 1992.

Oriental did a C&O and another low hood in 1984.

 

So says the Brown Book.

I found those after I asked the question.  They will likely be hard to find, and even rarer in the Chessie system paint scheme I need them in to accurately model either Indiana Railroad (with a sharpie) or Chessie System (my wife likes cats, so I buy her locomotives with cats on them in the vain attempt to prevent the enevitable introduction of felines into my layout room and workshop).  Not that I hate cats or anything.

 

I wish they were made in plastic.  So it looks like a hack saw job.  Will probably end up starting with P2k Chessie SD9s and working my way from there.

Side question - were any SD-18s delivered with low short hoods? I know the DMIR ones came with high hoods like their SD-9s. Later the railroad chopped down their noses, but I think all the SD9/18s weren't converted until the 1990s.

Of the 54 US SD18s, only the 19 DM&IR units were delivered with high short hoods. The other 35 units were delivered with low short hoods. See Extra 2200 South August/September 1968 p.19 for roster.

  Besides being delivered with the EMD low nose, the C&O SD18's rode of trade-in Alco Tri-Mount trucks...

The last Chessie SD18s I recall seeing was working as yard engines at Russell.. These was replaced by Seaboard System MP15ACs around 83 and these engines was shortly replaced by GP39s.

I've see some pics of NIWX #7311, SD 18 (ex-C & O) as recent as Sept 2, 2016 in South Haven, KS. The photographer shares his work on a site that requires membership to view; otherwise, I would post that link. His pics show the paint scheme is still standing strong.

Seems it was removed from service due to wiring issues. But a leasing company bought it and is making those repairs.

His pics show the paint scheme is still standing strong.

You should see the photos of the Chessie paint shop. Chessie System in Color by Bob Withers pg 13.  It appears they painted the entire locomotive Enchantment Blue, then masked off and painted the orange stripe (dont know the proper name for the color), then they masked the areas where the cat and the Chessie System lettering and numbers on the side go and paint yellow over that (the locomotive is blue from the orange stripe down). 

There must be several layers of yellow to cover that blue, which is probably why its held up so well.

What locomotive type was the donor for the Alco Tri-mount trucks that the Chessie SD18s had?

RSD-5s? 

I wonder how difficult it would be to graft Atlas RSD-5 trucks onto a proto sd9 or similar locomotive.

According to my information C&O traded in their RSD-5s (5570-5595) for the SD18s.

However,I'm not sure what became of their RSD-7s(6800-6811) or their RSD-12s(6700-6709).

I used their last road numbers for simplicity.

I notice he's doing a rebuilt SD18 instead of a as delivered SD18..Still cool modeling.

I would be tempted to start with a SD24 since it already has a low hood but,would study the best path for the build..

I noticed that when he started is research, he mentioned the C & O SD18's.  Where they original, as delivered ?   A Google search sure brings up a lot, including the C & O.

I have a few projects started, this just might inspire me to get back to work.

Nineteen of C&O's RSD-5s were traded in on new SD18s between May 1962 and January 1963. The remaining seven C&O RSD-5s were traded to GE for U30Cs in September 1968. The SD18s retained the GE 752 traction motors and 74:18 gear ratios.

The RSD-7s were retired between September and November 1969 and then traded to GE on the U23Bs.

The RSD-12s were transferred to B&O in August and September 1969. Five of these RSDs were traded in on C&O U30Bs in early 1972 and the other five were sold to LASCO in March 1972. LASCO was the leasing arm of the LS&I.

Data from the B&O/C&O rosters in issues #33 and 34 of Extra 2200 South.

Great stuff! Thank you! I added that to my C&O information three ring note book. I had Chesapeake & Ohio in color volumes 1 & 2 but,the box they was in went missing during my last move.
