Replacement Windows for HO Walthers Cornerstone Modulars
Posted by FRRYKid on Monday, October 31, 2016 9:55 PM

Got another one for my forum friends: Does anyone have any good ideas on windows that would replace the windows in the OOP HO Walthers Cornerstone Modular walls? I have plenty of walls but not a lot of windows that fit those walls.

In case people have forgotten, the details are as follows (these were done using my digital calipers): they are a 9 over 9 double hung window, a single window measures out at .620 x 1.240", the frame rails are about .093", the double windows have a center gap of .285" (I don't necessarily need the double windows.) and the walls have an opening of .479  X 1.125" to receive those windows.

As usual, any suggestions anyone might have would be most welcomed.

FRRYKid:

I have tons of Walthers Modulars windows left over. The problem is that they are N scale so they won't do you any good.

One option is to use Evergreen styrene strip to mimic the sash joints and forget about the multi-pane effect. That will give you a more modern looking window which may or may not suit your era.

Here are my N scale background buildings. The layout will be HO. Two of them have the sash joints installed:

Another option might be the window sheets from City Classics. I don't know how close the dimensions would be but they are worth exploring even if the spacing of the muntons isn't perfect. They can be cut to size with scissors:

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

My first thought was Tichy.

With only a cursory glance I found a .54 x 1.07 9 over 9 window. Just a bit small but maybe you could use some strip styrene to frame it? Or add a sill and lintel.

The only other one I came across is a bit larger at .68 x 1.45

Grandt Line comes close, but not exact.

RIX Pikestuff has a #3000 Machine Shop 9 over 9 window but I can not obtain the exact size. Maybe you could email them and ask?

I found a few laser-cut suppliers as well, still not exact.

If you browse their S and O scale offerings there might be a size there that would work?

[edit] I'm getting in over my head, but I decided to look at Tichy S scale windows and found one that fits an .82 x 1.20 opening...

Even before that last suggestion, I had thought about Grant Line's 5097 42” x 91” Engine House Window. But I will also add the suggested 8054 44" x 90" 9/9 Double Hung Window to that list. As I don't have a LHS, I will have to order a couple of packages via the Internet to see which one fits the best.

The Pikestuff industrial windows Part 3000 measure out to 3/4" by 2 1/8" - that is the outside edge, so they'd actually be used to fill a slightly smaller opening.  They are the same castings as their machine shop structure kit uses.  Interesting how they measure out in "real" not scale inches - so do some Walthers structure parts by the way.

When I get to scratching my head about how to fill a window opening for which I have no window meant for it, I am glad I have the two boxes of essentially every window (and door) that Tichy makes.  MicroMark often has those on sale by the way.  A bit of filing - or a bit of styrene strip framing - can open up more possibilities for workable windows, as can some imaginative splicing.

By the way, Green River Hobbies in Geneseo IL at one time had a supply of Walthers Modulars, although I may have bought them out of much of it.  Embarrassed  grhobbies.com

Try contacting them as they may have window packages.  Ask for Matt.  Besides they send out a good email newsletter.

I've built a few of these Cornerstone kits and I've got lots of leftover parts I'll probably never use.  I sent the walls on to another forum member.  If you've got a picture of the ones you're looking for I might be able to help.

I decided to order the 8054 44" x 90" 9/9 Double Hung Windows as I had to order a few other parts for my layout and that seller had those on hand. I figure I should have them end of the week or so.

Just as a follow-up, I got the Tichy windows today. They look like they should work very well. The width is perfect. I will need to use some styrene on the top and bottom for height but that's not anything new for me. I also had to sand down the bottom sill as the walls already have the sills cast in the walls.

As I suspected, the Thichy windows fit with the following modifications: remove sill details on bottom, and add a piece of .020 x .040 styrene on the top and add a piece of .020 x .060 styrene on the bottom.
