Good evening.  This was the first day of traveling with no rain.  As it turns out, had we stayed three more days in northern Saskatchewan, we would now be enjoying 8 inches of fresh wet snow.  Wife talked to friends while I was checking into the motel and they said they had just retrieved their fifth wheel travel trailer and pulled their rental boats out of the water before the snow came today.

Did get to watch a mixed freight cross the Missouri River at Souix City this morning.  No pictures as I was driving down I-29 in traffic at the time we saw the train.

Spent the afternoon with my step-sister and her husband.  Topped off the visit with a piece of cherry pie.

Today's picture is of a National Railcar Equipment Company diesel located in the Pas yard of the Hudson Bay Railroad.  The second picture is of a five stall roundhouse at the Pas.  The roundhouse has no turntable but rather relies on switcches to line up the individual stalls.  The facility is still in use.

Hope everyone has a great hump day this week.

Good Evening,

YGW, the company is Mac Skylights in Edmonton. I think they mainly do commercial not residential units. They do make a nice unit though for our climate being triple instead of just double layers and very heavy plastic.  We had to go custom as one unit is 3' square and the other 2' square. They are both about 25 years old.

I am joining Ken's club, in that I have another loco problem, the chuff sound has disappeared from my BLI light mike. It happened a while ago when  a reset fixed it but not this time. I sent a message to BLI so hopefully they have a fix that doesn't involve a return. Mind you the engine runs fine so hopefully a decoder exchange will do the trick if there isn't some other reset possible.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, I will have a Beer and give Ed one if he makes it in.

Wasted this day off. Sigh Just felt like Caboose all day. Not sick, just could not get up a head of steam. Spent more time trying to nap than anything. Did a tad of running, only spent maybe 45 minutes out of the house.

Feet Front New Diabetic shoes are causing all sort of problems. Will be going in for the thrid re-fitting for the inserts Thursday. They keep cuasing some really nasty blisters. I have had them now for around 3 weeks and only wore them maybe 5 days? Go back to the old shoe for the right foot and the wound shoe for the left. Left foot has the ulcer on the hammer toe on the toe next to the big one.

 Train Front.

Ed used my better Harbour Freight (only the best for my trains Laugh ) screw drivers set and did get the screw out! Big Smile Not sure if I will have to remove the decoder. or if I can get the drive shaft back in with all the wires hooked up. May fiddle with it later tonight.

I Love Sound Engines! But just one at a time. Tryed running the Might Y6b with the B&O F7's, just sounds like a racket. Still need to get the Y6b on the programing track and turn down the sound. Maybe that will help?

 Later, Ken

CN Charlie - What type of skylight do you have ?

UP831 - : ) Glad you stopped back in ! I had no idea it got down into teh 20s! I tought SCal was like the song - always sunny ! I do not understand snow gets below 3000' ? Here if it snows it snows everywhere. At sea level to teh tops of teh mtns.

Ed - How many bushels is in a 1/2 ton ? Our local farmers say it takes a bushel of apples to get a gallon of apple cider. Is this what you expierence ? What do you do with the pulp ? The locals give it to the black angus or Hereford that is raised here. LOL Loved the comment moose going to the Elk lodge Laugh

Good Afternoon,

Well our warm weather is now gone and we have about 45F with a strong NW wind that Johnboy has sent our way. Hard to believe that it was 79F on Monday. We did get the last of the shrubs planted though. I also made another attempt at caulking the leaking skylight. My first attempt stop one leak but another turned up. So back on the roof and another tube of slicone was applied to the gasket area.  I think it had deteriorated over time but I had been reluctant to put on the caulk as I was afraid it might be visible inside. It worked!! No leaks in the rain last night. Hope I didn't tempt fate there.

I thought I had fixed the power pickup on the light mountain by fixing the tender pickup but I was wrong. So I replaced the wipers on the loco with a new set that I had ordered in the summer as I was suspicious that there was a problem with them. One solder was broken but that didn't fix the problem so I had to take out the old and install the new. It was a little fiddly but I got it done and it did fix the problem. I was pleasantly surprised that Bachmann had the parts for 10 year old loco and it was easy to order them on their website.

We went out birding this morning at the local nature reserve and had a  very pleasant time. We saw 18 species in about an hour and then had a very nice late breakfast in the cafe they have on site. It was a lot nicer out this morning than it is now.

I hope Rob in Georgia is doing ok. It has been a long time since we have heard from him.

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo. I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Just dropping in for a minute during lunch.

Yes, it can get below 40 overnight in So Cal.  It's not all that common, but it happens frequently enough.  I remember frost warnings and it could get down into the 20s.

That was always a real concern to the orange growers.  If one ever goes by an orange grove and sees a propellor mounted on a tall pole, it's to keep he air moving during frost times so the frost doesn't settle on the oranges and ruin the crop.

Every winter there would always be a day or two that the snow would get below the 3000 ft level, which could mess with the Grapevine and Cajon Pass.

Unfortunately, I have to run.

Hello to everyone, and thanks YGW, I appreciate the sentiment.

I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Ed - What kind of hornets build nest in the ground. Here we see "yellow jacketets" I think they are wasp ?

Yes, YGW Yellow jacket, "Vespula" are a variety of wasp. According to Wikipedia there are hundreds of thousands of varieties of wasps. Then, within the yellowjacket genera there are dozens of varieties of hornets and yellowjackets.

This weekend we pressed a half-ton of apples for cider. Wow, that attracted every wasp in the neighborhood to feed on the pulp and juice. A couple of us got stung a few times. Next year we will set up a screened-in area!

All I know is... fear, respect and distance!

I'll check in with you folks later,

Sorry for not getting back in here for a few days. Got busy with a few projects, not all of them railroad-related.

Flo, could I get a club sandwhich and some cottage fries with white cheese on them and a glass of water? Thank you very much.

FRRykid - What type of flat cars did you get ?

They are Walthers GSCs that I picked up when I was on vacation in ID last month. NP (Northern Pacific) marked and they work well in the era that I model.

Lazers:

Paul, don't be afraid to ask for translations! There's always a different way to state things that may be easier for you to understand. Besides, its fun and educational to learn 'proper' English, i.e. English as spoken by the British.

Just as an aside, it is a well known fact that American English is the hardest language for a non-speaker to learn because every rule has at least one word that violates it. (e.g. i before e except after c and in words such as neighbor) It also makes it hard for an English speaker to learn a non-English language.

Railroad Projects: Had to call the place where I ordered the needed paint for a couple of projects. One of the bottles that I was sent wasn't correct. (Ordered a green paint but I got a bottle of white paint.) Talked to an actual person after jumping through a couple of hoops and got a replacement on the way. Over the last couple of days, I have also gotten a little bit further on my new engine house. Have to bash a front door from the stock components for it as those components were too small to run an engine through.

Non-layout Projects: Got some maps scanned on Monday at our local print shop (purchased on vacation) for a possible presentation. My scanner is too small (standard multi-function printer - 8.5 x 11 or so and these maps are 11X17). While I was there I also ordered some more of the notepads that I use at work. Had to go back Tuesday morning as one of the images wasn't emailed to me. (Also had to show the new bindery person what the notepads looked like. He just hadn't done anything like them before.) Also had the annual physical on Monday. Nothing major. Just like to keep up on my health. (Too many ailments that run in the family not to keep up.) Later Monday, I had to have one of the local telephone company's techs come out and fix my telephone. The line was being very scratchy (unusual for this company) and also quite spotty on the service actually working. What was hoped to be a quick fix ended up being about an hour and a half. The tech had to replace a couple of things in the actual building box, put a new modular box in my apartment and replaced a section of the outline line as the section of line was cracked and old. He figured that the box and the line were at least 20 years old. Quite interesting to watch.

Lion - That is a funny picture and comment. Lions dont eat bear claws or cheese ?

No, no, no. LIONS love Bear Claws (on or off of the Bear -- depending on the size of the bear.)

LIONS do not eat Cheeze. Makes him barff.

I got rid of the ladder from my nursing office. I fell off of that last year and broke my leg. Now I have a nice platform to stand on, but there is no ladder for the cat to climb up to her window.

Hey, Fellow Diners! Good Morning...

Flo, you say Ken got the last three tacos? Well, no worries. I best not chow-down on tacos at 3 AM!

How about a frosted malted milk just like they used to make at the Higbee's Department store in Cleveland—right off the steam concourse of Union Terminal.

http://webersvintageicecream.com/the-famed-frosted-malt/

I have never been able to duplicate that flavor, anywhere! North Coast Custard makes a pretty good "resemblance" of the Euclid Beach Frozen Custard but I just can't find the same great flavor of the Higbee's Frosted Malteds...

Going back to the hornet-wasp discussion. The worst experience I have ever witnessed was a situation two summers ago when Mrs. Pullman turned out our goats into a pasture. A very short time later I heard her run out of the house. She had the phone and was calling the vet. One of the big, male goats was on the ground in shock. He had apparently stirred-up a ground nest of hornets.

By the time I got out there she had pulled this 175 pound goat away from the nest and had been stung seven times herself swatting them away from him. The poor goat only lived maybe another ten minutes.

This was a strong, healthy goat—like an ox he was—dropped in a matter of minutes!

We still feel bad and partly responsible but how would anyone know that nest was there. The buggers hide in the ground! Nasty things... one of my sons got stung several times when he picked up a piece of old wood laying on the ground when he was very young. Just never saw the nest!

Anyway... onward and upward!

On the train front: I'm about half-way through with final Hulett #4. I have to be careful as I'm getting lackluster with this one so little mistakes are creeping in. I'm checking off each step with a marker now and paying more attention. Easy to get "soft" with mundane tasks!

Sorry that SD7 gave you fits, Ken. Again, the truck clip. Maybe it became dislodged in shipping. Hope you get 'er on the rails OK soon.

You're at the top-O-the page, Ken, so thanks for the Malt! Flo, you outdid yourself! Deee-licious Big Smile

Thoughts and prayers to those in need...

Regards, Ed

 Evening Diners

Flo, I will have a Beer, 3 soft shell taco's and give Ed one as well if he makes it in.

Today was not a great day! Bang Head

Work Front Was not busy but got a couple of who care sales. But a sale is a sale right! Yes What Chapped My Caboose was from are so called managment. Last week they changed the format of our sales tags, I think the new style is a pain in the caboose but Paul is trying. Pain to change all the tags, but I did it.

The Ash Pit part is TODAY THEY WANTED THE COLUMBUS DAY SALES TAGS BUT OUT! OK, I spent 5 hours last Tuesdays putting out the new tags (My Friday) and spent another 5 hours putting out new ones again before I go home? Bang Head

Train Front It was Take A Engine To Work Day for me! Big Smile Took the PK 2000 Penn SD 7 Ed sent me. Took my simple train tools with me, should be a simple task. All I need to do was remove a weight held on with 3 screws, maybe cut and solder a few wires and re-attach the Worm Gear cover. Should be say a 30 minute shop right! Whistling Wrong! One of the weights screw heads was stripped, could not get a grip on it. Sigh Came so close to getting the cover back on with out getting the weight off all the way. Then the drive shaft fell out and I knew I was screwed.

angelob6660
I finally tested my CR 8-40CW #6060. She ran very well and fast on DCC on knob 4. How come locomotives power has to be cracked up at 4 -6 speed just to get it rolling.

Angelob6660 If it is a sound DCC engine it takes that much power to get the sound decoder going. If it is none sound you can fiddle with the CV's. (think you can with sound decoders as well) CV 2 is one of the CV's that will help. That is the starting voltage. There is all so a Kick Start CV. (pumps just a small burst to get the motor going) I don't recall that CV but I am sure there is help here at the site.

 Later, Ken

Ray:

Your work with the ceiling tiles is excellent! I've seen a few layouts where the layers were a bit too obvious but your tiles look very convincing.

When I worked at Home Depot we threw out damaged tiles at the end of every day, and most days there seemed to be at least a couple of them. If you want broken tiles I would first ask the store if they are willing to let you have them.

Regards,

Dave

A wet good evening to all.  Drove in rain about half of the day.  At this time of day a nice cup of tea is in order.

Today's diesel offering comes in Kelona Pacific colors.  I had to do a little internet research to find out what and where the Kelona Pacific operated.  Duh, the Kelona Pacific was a short lived branch line operating through Kelona, B.C.  It operated for a short 3 years and went broke.  The CN took most of the branch line back and continues to offer service.  As best as I can tell, the Hudson Bay Railroad ended up with a couple of Kelona Pacific power units and operates them out of the Pas yard.  A couple more strange road name units to follow.

Evenin' fol.....  Wow!

Whole lot of faces I haven't seen in a while back here in the diner!  Great...  Janie put whatever John and Terry are having on my tab please.....  Oh and I could use a cup of decaf please.

Finally today a bunch of items have started to fall intop place.  The Pro Sound Store I use for Sound Equipment had told me evertything I have ordered (and need ASAP) would be in late in the day Thursday.  I was prepared to brave Rush Hour in Rochester, NY traffic to be at his shop to pick the items up and to be at camp early afternoon Friday to get the installation finished.  He emails me this afternoon and tells me everything will be at his store by 10AM tomorrow.  So guess what I'll be doing early tomorrow afternoon....  Got my hearing aids cleaned so I now can hear better, heard from the other NMRA Officers on some things for the upcomming meet I have been fretting about, have the person in place to make coffee and get donuts for the Meet, and should hear tomorrow about whether the clinic I am hoping for and a club layout will be open for it.  Also stopped at a lumber yard to see if they might have some broken cieling tiles I could get cheap for the additional rockwork at Keuka Creek on the layout.  Nope, but I could buy a case of 40 for $40....  I only need about 3 of them to do the job.  After I got home i thought about the gent who rebuilt my living room for me a year ago.  He was one of my students way back when, so I sent him an email asking if he might just have some broken ones laying around from some job.  His reply 5 mionutes later was "How many do you need I have some broken ones they are full just broken corners. But I have a bunch Let me know I will drop off to your house."  Nice to have friends in the business.......Smile, Wink & Grin

For those that don't know how it works, you just break up the tiles and glue them in place.  Looks like this:

I use Kilz as a first coat to seal the tile, and then stain it to a stone color.  looks like this when done:

Here is what I've been doing this week extending the area for the new section:

There will be a scale 145' long bridge over this when finished......

Hope you all have a great night!

Good afternoon.

TACOS!!!!!! Someone say Tacos?!?

Steve - National Taco day?!? YES!!! I'm with deadpool on this one! TACOS!!!!! That is the second time I have seen Deapool this week. (Saturday he was at Berea Ohio Comicon.) Good thing I have been on his good side!

Flo - I will have two of the beef tacos, with spicey taco sauce, please. Of course with cheese, thank you. Can I get a order of nachos to go with it? Awesome. And a glass of lemonade would be great, thanks.

Lion - If you want, I will have Flo bring you tacos, sans cheese. I will even buy. (Just a spiced beef wrap if tortilla shell, or a crunchy spiced beef nacho topping if hard shell style.) Maybe, if we ask nicely, they might even be able to do one special, in wildebeesties instead of cows.....

Central Gulf - Monitored. The company that monitors called me, to inform me of the issue, interior motion detector faulted, and its location, and that they had dispatched local PD. It was local Pd's fourth alarm call of the night, all turned out to be false alarms, hence my power spike theory. The system sent out a faulted interior smoke/fire/CO2 alarm(s) this morning, and FD was sent shortly before 10am. (Although, there is very little water available to use in putting out fires, so there is a city wide burn ban in effect, as well as a emergency declaration from the city and township, due to lack of water.... See further info below...) I was hoping that they would call me to bring the marshmallows! Wink (If you can't put out the fire, you should get to enjoy it, right?) It turned out to be a false alarm as well, so something is totally going on with the security system...

Trains - Someone had asked about the NS OCS train. It is the executive officers train, as was mentioned. Here is one of the shots I got of it in Berea Ohio on Saturday evening.NS OCS Berea

This one was uploaded from my cell phone, as the rest are still in my camera. I should be getting those onto my computer tonight.

Really nice to catch them. It's a really cool looking train, and it is not everyday you can catch a ABBA set of F-units hauling a 14 car passenger train! Too bad they don't sell tickets to ride it...

I will be installing a decoder, and lights, into my newest loco, a old BB SD40-2, that I had picked up in Berea at the train show.

Interesting thing about railfanning in Berea? You can railfan, and planefan at the same time! Hard to do most places.

W**k - Yes, I do go in, as closing MOD (Manager On Duty) tonight. Hopefully no alarm issues! Still can't use the water though.... How the town lost its entire 3,000,000 gallon reservoir before they got the leak under control, I don't know...

Hope all enjoy the day!

Mmmm.... tacos.... (In my best Homer voice...)

If it's Taco Day, I will take two salmon tacos for lunch. Wait, what?! You know, salmon tacos--baja style. Not in this diner? Okay, then a couple of beef tacos and a root beer.

The rain is gone, the air is dry, and the temperature has fallen--perhaps autumn has arrived in Arizona. It was 57F at 5:30 this morning when I left on my ride. That's getting real close to my cold riding limit. I used to ride in much cooler/colder weather, but as I have aged, I have become a bit more wimpy about riding in the cold. Typically, 55F is my limit but I may venture out when it is 50F, but that is definitely the exception.

I get to see the grandkids this weekend! We are venturing up to Idaho. I am using frequently-flyer points to fly up there and rental bonus points for a free car. All of the travel does have it's occasional benefit.

Since I added the section to my layout, I have only been running DC. I had DCC running before, but I have be hesitant to switch over. I keep hearing my father's voice in the back of my head, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I am going to make a switch to easily switch back and forth between DC and DCC. My staging tracks are isolated and I have the ability to turn the power on and off to each of the tracks, so I can park DC and DCC-equipped locomotives on the track and leave them there, regardles of which power supply is active.

LIONS do not eat Tacos. LIONS do not LIKE Cheese.

Then they would be the only kind of cat that doesn't love cheese.  Hmm

Chinese is good, Rare Wildebeest is BEST. (but too costly for this LION to get too often.)

As good as those bear claws look, Deadpool has different ideas. And you don't want to cross Deadpool. Not when tacos are on the line.

Chef Ryan has adjusted the specials board accordingly. TACOS!!!!

Lion..... Are you providing sticky buns every morning this month ?.... Dinner

This morning we have BEAR CLAWS, with nuts and raisins. I don't want to be around when the bear wakes up.

Just got back, had a midnight phone call, burglar alarm @w**k was going off. Met the store manager, her husband, and local PD. No one was inside, no forced entry, nothing apparently wrong inside. Did a walk through with two officers, no apparent reason for the alarm. It was their 4th tonight, so wonder if a power spike occurred?

Is that a monitored alarm or just a local bell? If monitored, the monitoring company should be able tell you what set it off. The alarm sends a code or codes that identify the zone(s) violated.

Got one myself yesterday when the power failed. The alarm company called my cell to let me know the power was out.  Cool

No decent (commercial) alarm system should have a problem with a power spike. They all filter the power and have battery backup.

Good morning, Bill and Dave!

Everybody else..... Wake up! ....

I'll have coffee and one of Lion's sticky buns please.

I hope a sticky bun means a carmel pecan roll and not the result of Lion sitting on some honey.

Tom ... Thanks for the photos. It must have been good seeing the train in person.

James .... The old CN units may look scruffy, but I bet they run as good as new.

MoeLarryCurly .... We just went to Paducah a few days ago to see Classic Trains at its new location with much more square feet. ... I know the owner, Bill. He has a lot of stuff to chose from.
