Work Front Seems work is not the only place that is slow. Only 2 posting here at the dinner today so far. Work was not much better, while I made some sales, nothing that helps me pay check wise. I see digging into the savings again next month to make the house payment.
Ed Thanks for the Round House link. One of the things that sparked my intrest in B&O (besides Uncle Charlies being a engineer for B&O) is when I found out that for years every day I drove by a old B&O Round House in East St Louis. When I finally knew where to look from the interstate, there it was! Not much left right now. Any chances you have any good links to it?
All so, any links to the B&O yard and round house for Washington Ind? My grand fathers house over looked the yard. That was when I started to get hooked on trains. I remember how excited I would get when I saw War Bonnet engines get serviced!
YGW First I am glad your Farther is doing so much better! On the coal cars, I am tickled pink (did I say that? Must be Panther Pink being a Mopar guy) With a little work they are all great rollers and only had one de-rail and that was a easy fix. I will post some photos, need to clean up the layout first.

I packed uo the old small Canon Printer that stopped working and set it out in the shed to be taken to a recycling center. I have two printers and a Hepafilter machine and a bunch of smaller electronic stuff (including my old Macbook) to get rid of. Supposedly Staples does that here in town. I'll check next time I go over there.
Finished mowing the lawn this afternoon, almost came back inside and put a jacket on. Fall has arrived here in the Finger Lakes. The temperature got all the way up to 64°F outside today. Currently 48°F on its way down to 45°F overnight. Yep, the air conditioner is off and has been for the last two days. Almost turned the heat on this morning, but didn't....
Got started today building the last bit of benchwork that I need to do on the SLOW. This shouldn't take long to do, so I expect to get started on the scenery and trackwok in a couple days if all goes well. Monday I will be out at Boy Scout Camp installing the new speakers on the stage. Monday Night I need to visit one of my Troops. Every evening this week has something going on, but I hope to find some time during the day to work on the layout.

A rainy, cool day here and we are in for 2 more of the same. Good thing I finally got up on the roof yesterday and did a thorough job on calking around the skylight in the kitchen. It did the trick and we are no longer getting a leak.
I also replaced our old modem/router. It was constantly dropping the internet connection but after 9 years, I can't complain. Replacing it was as simple as taking it to the provider's store and getting a new replacement, no charge. Setting it up was another matter. This laptop didn't want to do it and with the help of the tech support I connected the old laptop running Vista and finally after about an hour of guidance it was successful. Great service from MTS.
This morning I went to the annual trainshow. It was ok. I did pick up an unbuilt Red Caboose reefer kit for $5 and a few N scale vehicles. I did see a really nice brass CN K5a Hudson but they were asking $750. I likely could have got it for less and even though the price was good for a fairly rare loco, it is still too rich for me. I do love those K5a's though. Only CN loco with 80" drivers. They often ran them at 100 mph.

Ken's photo of the "mystery" roundhouse intrigued me, Garry. I was lucky enough to get to visit several before they were torn down. Crestline and Mingo Junction were two of them. Once, I stopped by the Western Maryland's Hagerstown roundhouse. The foreman invited me and a friend in, gave us a hard-hat and a quick tour then told us as long as we stay out of the way we could wander around the shop for as long as we wanted! Just leave the hard hats on the chair in my office when you're done.
Sure, it's like that today, too!
It must really have been something when those roundhouses and shops were going full-swing. At it's peak, I think there was some 14,000 employed by PRR in the Altoona shops.
Alvie, I'm having a few problems with my P70s, too. My couplers don't return to center on a few of them and the trucks don't allow much pivot and they are snap-in so not too much in the way of adjustment there. I'll have to fuss with them some more. Otherwise, I really like them.
I'm fairly new in the Diner, Zandoz, Just walked in back in August. Welcome back! Always good to share some stories...
I'll see what I can dig up on East St. Louis and Washington, Ken. I know B&O had a huge car shop in Washington and they reworked a bunch of their cabooses there. Neat stuff! You saw War Bonnet paint in Washington, Indiana? Did the Santa Fe have run-through engines?
Who matched the paint on the Monon nose door? That's one of those things if you do it on a model it looks awful but there it is in real life. I see mis-matched paint alot on real RR equipment.
That cool front finally passed through Ohio, too, Howmus! Last week was another hot and muggy week. Honestly I'd like to see a few days of nice, steady rain!
Today was a swell day of railroading thanks to an invite from my nephew to visit him at the Cuyahoga Valley shops and see the 767 [nee 765] get serviced.
It's been a while since I had a chance to get up-close and personal with a live steam locomotive!
I caught her at Boston Mills on the last photo runby. Isn't the orange safety fence pretty!

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is a pretty neat operation. They were running three trains last night with meets and still managed to hostle all this equipment around and get trains made up for this morning's runs. The Fort Wayne Historical Society's 765 crew is a very professional bunch and they run like a well-oiled machine.
It was a real pleasure to be a witness to all this fun activity!

The car project was to be my return to Gearhead status after a 30 or so year hiatus. I knew the day to hang it up was coming when I decided to take a shot at doing this...and planned out ways to get around my limitations based on the rate of my decline at the time. The problem is I've gotten much worse than anticipated over the last year. I could probably get a start on construction before I'd absolutely have to hang it up, but things are at the point where the next step is probably the most costly...building the frame and bracketry. I just can't see the point of laying out a lot of money on that just to have to quit shortly after.
Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.
Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.
"Oooh...ahhhh...that's how this all starts...but then there's running...and screaming..."

Garry, since Ed hasn't been back in to comment, I can shed some light on 767/765. My understanding is that the engine back in service today was orginally 765 but was renamed 767 to be out on display in Fort Wayne. The original 767 was not retired inside like the 765 and when the city asked for her for display they renumberd 765 to be 767. When the museum rebuilt 767 (the one on display) to be road worthy they brought her back to her original #765. Nice crisp Fall day here in the Finger Lakes Region. Currently 63°F under sunny skies. Last night dipped down into the low 50's and tonight will get to the high 40's they predict. The Air Conditioner is off! May have to kick the heat on one of these days..... I like to wait until close to November if I can. I did pull the comforter on the bed up last night.
I do need to get in touch with HVAC place and have them come and clean and adjust the system soon. It hasn't been cleaned since it was installed a few years ago.

Zandoz Man I am the King of aquring of things I have never used! I still have ported heads, intakes, cams, lifter, cranks and body panels that I more than likely will never use. Think you have the same problem I do. A young mans brain stuck in a old mans body! My blowen 69 Charger R/T was my last big project. Still like to re-do my 68 Road Runner. Most of the body parts are for her. Been mine for now 43 years? Man I feel old right now!
Ed, while you suck down the did you find any more shoots of the Indiana car shop? I like to see it and the there tracks when they where being used. My Grandfather house was on a bluff about 100 feet form the edge. There was like 20 tracks, so it must have been the switching yard to bulid trains. Where I saw the War Bonnets was either a sanding station (Unlikely but maybe) or a fueling station. More than likely fueling, it was close to the bluff and could only sevices 2 tracks. Yard was on the inside (away from the bluff) and did not connect to the yard from where I could see it. Must remember, I was about 5 years old then.
Train Front Well I am down to only 2 B&O Coal Cars from YGW. B&O F7A's are now dragging 40 coal cars. Must say I am impressed by both the engines and the coal cars! Thanks Guys!

The shops, what's left of them, seem to be occupied by a tank car rehab or cleaning outfit. That looks like a DOT111 on the (presumably non-functional) transfer table.

Solid brick with a Spanish tile roof! The B&O wanted it to last (and it did, it is 110 years old!). This Flickr contributor has many historic photos of some of the old O&M (B&O) around Washington, including another great aerial shot, also photos around Vincennes and Mt. Carmel both new and old. Pretty interesting stuff!

Yeah, I've already acquired a lot of stuff I'd never use even if I finished the project. Actually, a good percentage of what I would be using are parts leftover from other folks projects. I have very little left from my past endeavours. When I let my dad talk me into quitting "playing with the car stuff", I sold the cars and gave almost everything else away.
I aways say I was born old and went down hill from there. I'm about to turn 60, and my grandfather-in-law was far better off than I when he turned 100
Dianne and I had a fun day today. We participated in the anual Muskoka model railroad tour. Fortunately for us we didn't have to drive all the way to 'cottage country' as it is affectionately known. Several layouts were in the Barrie / Alliston area which is close to home.
The layouts were all very interesting.
Brian Searles HO Conrail set up models a mere 6 miles of the Detroit railway corridor but it very realistically requires eight operators and a yard master to do an operating session, which typically takes about 2 1/2 hours.
David Smith is modelling in On30. Lots of scratchbuilt buildings, and lots of wide open spaces too.
Roger Hauka's HO layout models the CN from Gravenhurst to Washago. It is very well done, but the most impressive feature is a scratch built powered Bascule bridge that allows access to the layout without a duck under or a liftout. Roger apologised for it not being exactly prototypical for Gravenhurst, but it looks so good and works so well that he is definitely forgiven!

Good morning! Got back from vacation yesterday. Had a great time. The only railroad-related activity was biking on an old rail trail.
We went to the drive-in theater. Haven't done that in years. Steamed up the windows.

Good morning, everybody! It's another Monday. Over the weekend, the wife and I went to visit some relatives about an hour's drive away. They took us to lunch at a diner -- well, more of a truck stop -- that they said had great beer-cheese soup. Well, that soup wasn't on that day, so I can't say if they were right about the soup, but I can say that everything else we ordered was absolutely awful. The meat on my wife's gyro was like one of those pig's ear chew toys after the dog has had enough of it. My biscuits and gravy were bland and cold in spots, and the accompanying scrambled eggs were topped with an unmelted slice of rubbery American cheese. Our host's fried chicken was dry, overcooked, and had no spices or even breading on it. His wife's open-faced turkey sandwich was absolutely drowned in salty, fluorescent-yellow "gravy." Even the ice water tasted funny. So it's good to be back here, where the food is always as good as you imagine it to be.
Why, thank you, Flo. Now this is what I'm talking about. Down the hatch!

Another cool, crisp Fall morning here in the Finger lakes region of NYS this morning. Currently 65°F with a high of 72°F by mid afternoon. I will be heading out to Boy Scout Camp right after lunch today to do the speaker installation on the stage. Or should I say, Oversee the Speaker installation..... I may get up on a step ladder from the stage itself, But climbing tall ladders aren't something I do anymore. I will be soldering the connectors for the wiring and testing out the system if we finish the job today. Have everything packed that I should need.
Spent some hobby time last night doing a bit more on the table work for the last section on the layout. Also added a piece of fine wire as a bracing cable on the end of the fence. Also moved and replaced one part of the fence which was too narrow on it. Want to be able to have the farmer bring a work horse and a mower up there if he should want too... Maybe even a McCormick-Deering 10-20. Still have to make the gates and the track crossing.

Today's weather forecast light dark clouds with rain.
After walking two dogs for the last month. I noticed that my left arm started to hurt. It turns out that I have been stretching it, which is weird because it's my good hand. Now I noticed this morning that my other arm is starting to hurt with the same reaction.
I was busy busy the last 2 days, trying to score double bonus points playing Star Wars Battlefront. I got bored after a two hour playing. I'm not much of a gamer.

Weather: Cooler, and wet today. Getting down to 40's at night, so have shut down the AC, and have the heat on, but as low as possible. (Wood pellet stoves.)
W**k: Getting lots of freight, still.... Finally got an extra person hired on though. (Replacing my old spot as supervisor.) I had to throw about 100 pieces of freight myself today, and we were supposed to get another 100 by end of day. It gets fun when the freight is stacked 10+ feet high in the backroom. (I am 5'6....) Yep, throwing around 50-70lb cases, 4+ feet above your head, sure gets fun!
Trains: Nothing to report, but am planning on being in Berea Ohio on Saturday for the train show, and to railfan for a while. Anyone else going to be there? Depending on weather will depend on what I am wearing...

Today has really been a mixed day with good and bad.
Bad Sunday I dropped off my Town Car to have the power steering leak fixed. I was hopping it would just be a line leaking and a $50.00 to $120.00 repair. Well the darn steeing box is leaking! Plus while it was up on the lift a drop of coolent hit Tim in the head. Yep, water pump is starting to leak. (does explain why I have been having to added coolent every 500 miles net never seen any coolent on the ground)
I all so wanted new spark plug's and wires installed. (bought them from Rock Auto for $45.00 with shipping) Wires from Auto Stupid DBA as Auto Zone was $70.00 not counting the $2.95 each for the plugs. Total Bill is $761.00! So I was not a happy camper. Told Bob to fix the darn thing.
Good? It was slow again today at work, but it was a good slow day! Made a extra $170.00 in spiff money, more than the rest of the month combined.
Good. Checked my credit cards statments on line. Seems my Discover Card Credit Line was raised another $1200.00! That sure will help with the coming repair bill of $761.00.
Ed I did come across the same link about the Washington car shop and round house. From what I can remember the round house and car shop was off to the left about a half mile from my Grandfather's house.
By the way Ed, my hair is more brown than rust colored. Now my beard? Well now more white than I like!

Just wanted to stop by and say howdy. Hope everyone is doing well. Cant believe im saying this but its raining outside. Very nice night to sit at the diner and tell caboose stories. Specially with a plate of viddles like Steve showed above.
Not much going on which is my usual report. Nothin out of ordinary and certainly nothing going on with the hobby.

Hobby Front: As I suspected (and probably already mentioned), I came home with four freight cars that were not on my list from my vacation. (Three Walthers GSC flat car kits for the NP for $23. Decided that was a fairly good buy. Ended up spending another $5 each for Adair weight kits for each car. [Although I did change around the weight application from their instructions. I couldn't justify covering up the factory floor with weights. I didn't get to full NMRA weight but it's close enough for me at about .65 oz light.] The other car was an Athearn NP Airslide hopper for $2! Part of a raffle at the Saturday night banquet. Spend the $2 on tickets, one of my tickets was drawn, and I got to pick the hopper. Need to do some weathering on all of the cars to fit my era but nothing out of the ordinary.) I also have two additional projects in my pile: my NP cleaner boxcar (straighten sill, pull roofwalk holes, paint and purchase cleaner kit) and an NP SD45 (build a correct headlight, change around some cab details and correct some handrail issues and of course paint the replacemtn details.) Lots of projects for this fall and winter.

I believe I would have to say that You had it easy.....only 20 pallets. Just think how these guy's had it, having to unload a boxcar with white/wheat flour and stack on pallets going all sorts of destinations.....about a 1000 bags per side. Come to think of it..... I'll have to take a couple more pic's and replace the guy's with the Lions I still have...

How about a good car story for a change? I had a burned-out headlight on my VW Jetta. I took it to the dealer, but he said the extended warrantee did not cover it, and it would be about $45 to install a new one. So, I went to my local shop. The bulb was $25 and the labor was $5. Yes, five dollars. I had thought of doing it myself, but for $5 I wouldn't even try.
