Evening Diners,

During the past two hours I was worried about buying a C30-7 SF Kodachrome. Erasing off the SF letters, and adding more red, black paint on the warbonnet. Or maybe more simple keep it. I just don't know if the SF and nose banner are decals.

I know it will easy to add yellow/gold safety strips on the sill.

A little difficult to do with a undecordated shell, than to start with a finished product.

I'm probably over thinking things about modeling a small Class III switching railroad. That has three to four locomotives.

Ulrich my sympathies for what is going on in Germany and the world, for that matter.  I see there was an explosion in a bar since your last post.

Watching the TV is bad, at least here, because they talk about breaking developments and new video and it's really the same video and news they have have been presenting for hours or days.  You feel, incorrectly, that you need to keep watching to stay informed.

I am not having the log in issue you are having.

Too hot to do much of anything here.  Watched Kyle Busch win his second race this weekend. In his early days he was so obnoxious, you just wanted to put him in a head lock and punch him.  In fact his former boss, Roger Penske, did just that.  He has mellowed with age, marriage and 2 broken legs from a racing accident.  It was a racing feat today, but not an interesting race as he led nearly all the laps.

Nascar doesn't get the attention it deserves in my opinion.  There are almost no perfomance enhancing drug issues, gambling, or drivers getting shot or posting inappropriate tweets.  For a bunch of guys that didn't go to college, they speak better english than the college grads from a more popular winter sport.  Instead of being penniless ten years later, all the successful drivers have charitable foundations.

 Evening Diners

Flo, a Beer please and a bucket of ice. Man it is Hot out there!

Work Front Far from a great day but heck of a lot better than yesterday! Might have made a extra $60.00, but at this point I am not sure.

Weather Boy I am glad I felt like cutting the front yard today before work. Temps where only in the 80's. When I left work it was 102 and here at the house it is down to 94. House is real warm, I am gussing around 86. Garage on the other hand is around 75 so it feels good out here. I had toyed with the idea of cuting down the rest of the old fence tonight. Boy the temp changed my mind!

Boy I am sure glad I had the coolent top off on my Car A/C. It took a while, about 5 miles and it started to feel good.

Heartland Division CB&Q
You have a nice looking foreat in your picture.

Gary It is more of a small woods but thank you anyway! If I ever get to where I am not worrying about keeping the house I will start adding more trees. You threw me for just a second with the "foreats". But being the King Of Bad Typing And Spelling I under stood pretty quick! Big Smile

YGW You still have not gotton the snail mail? Maybe your Post Offices Horse died? Looking forward to the other coal cars. I love B&O. Now if I could only find more Monon cars. OK, I like Monon better than B&O but still love both.

BBQ Grills I use to trust the name Char-Broil, not any longer. First two last me 10 years each. Yes I replaced 2 burnners in each grill, but not every 2 years. I have had this one for about a year and a half, all 4 burners and flame deflectors are junk! Maybe I expect to much?

Well BBQ is about done and the trains are happy, so I am happy.

 Later, Ken

Afternoon/evening all. Yesterday as wife and I where running around I saw something that made me think of here. http://zoeskitchen.com/Home.aspx

A place called Zoe's Kitchen. Had to share it with you all. Looking it up in the yellow pages and I see there is 4 of them. Our gal Zoe is doing good I would say

Hope all had a good weekend. Ours was okay we drove about 120 round trip to find out a place we use to like to eat at was out of business. Man a lot happens in a year.

Not much else going on here talk to you all later

edit:

Sir Madog I picked something up in O gauge the other day you might like to see.

I got both of these in a auction but the one in the front is a 50's? toy trolley with a American Flyer 3 rail prewar engine in it.

With great sadness I have to report that more terrorist attacks have taken place during the last two days.

In Hamburg,  a 13 year old boy got shot, but survived. In Reutlingen, a pregnant women was killed following an attack from a man armed with a machete, several others were wounded. In Rotenburg, that´s 20 miles from my place, a man attacked passengers on a local train with a knife. He was overwhelmed by daring passengers before he was able to seriously hurt anybody.

Should you plan to visit Germany, I can only recommend to postpone this trip.

We are at war!

I am melting!

It´s hot, too hot! Not a breeze - you can cut the air with a knife!

Not in the mood for anything.

I am battling the forum software. I have bookmarked the page and I used to be looged in everytime I clicked on the bookmark. That´s gone and I have to log in about every second time I go back to the forum. Quite annoying, but I have no clue to what is causing it and how to correct it.

Janie, three Beer, please - two of them poured over me feet to cool them down and one for me to enjoy.

Thanks, Garry.

I made this video a few years ago. I think it gives a good idea why store bought RTR trees would be prohibitive for me.

For a smaller layout/ diorama/ photo op type situation RTR or Supertrees might be the way to go. Or if you have unlimited funds.Whistling

Good morning .

Terry .... Thanks for stopping in to show your trees. I was thinking the craft stores sell a product for floral arrangemnts  that may be similar to goldenrod. .... Your picture in WPF looks great too.

Ulrich .... I like your tunnel portal !  You do great work.

Ken ... You have a nice looking foreat in your picture.

FRRYKid ... Sounds like a good idea to post of photo of what you are talking about.

Good Morning!

What a night - I maybe caught 3 hours of sleep, not more, rather less! I got up early to catch the fresh morning air and made use of the early hour to finish the tunnel portal, install it on the layout and shoot a couple of pictures!

Looks right to me!

FRRYKid - trees make or break the appearance of a layout and unrealistic looking trees certainly can destroy all your efforts to make it look right in all other areas and aspects. Good looking trees are expensive, it you buy RTR trees. Heki offers kits for quite nice trees and so does Woodland Scenics. Get one of those kits and give it a try!

I am not happy with some of the trees on my Swiss layout (the ones around the station and the other buildings) and they will eventually be replaced with better ones, if I can spare the money. I am sure this will add some $$ to the sales price when it comes to selling the layout.

TTFN - I will stop by  a little later!

FRRYKid,

I don't stop here often, but happened to tonight and saw you were looking to cover a large area with trees.

In my notebook where I keep some "where to find" stuff, I find a note that in GMR '98, pg 75, there is some information on using polyester batting to cover a large area with trees.  I don't have it immediately available, but if I remember correctly it was in a sidebar.

Hope this is something useful for you.

Good luck,

Richard

I have tried the "puffball" approach and it didn't work well. That approach seems only to work for background areas. The spot in question is very much in the foreground on my layout. If I get a chance, I will take some pictures of the hill in question for reference purposes so that the group can see what I'm looking at.

Diners, greetings from the great north.  We have been here a week now.  The  new dog, Adele has settled in well and seems to enjoy walking along the edge of the lake.  One of the primary reasons we have been making the journey every summer is to escape summer heat.  Today it was 72 F here and should cool down to low 60s tonight.  Don't need air conditioning this far north.

Internet service in this remote location leaves a lot to be desired.  It is difficult streaming any video.  I was hoping to be able to watch Train TV but the internet service  makes it excrutiating to try to watch anything.  Reminds me of internet service about twenty years ago.

Sympathy for the people in Munich touched by violence.  No one should have to live in constant fear.

Stay cool.

Evening Diners,

Ulrich- I the like the tunnel portal.

It been a boring Saturday today, so my mind was spinning around. Since I didn't have a layout, I thought I could make a diorama instead. I remembered that Woodland Scenics makes the diorama A scene kits plastic trays.

The closest store who sells it is Michaels, and right next door is a Home Depot where I can purchase some foam. Flip the tray around and stack the foam inside. I might do that next week, but I got to remember to take track with me if it's going to work out.

Evenin' Folks!

Janie, I could sure use a tall glass of lemonade tonight!

Had a great day out at the Finger Lakes Live Steamers today.  It was the combined picnic of the Central New York Division and the Lakeshores Division (mine) of the NMRA.  Had a couple rides on the trains out there and talked to many folks I haven't seen in a couple years.

I no sooner got there when I was "allowed" to help a friend set out a string of cars in sideings around the trackage....  If I was more "comfortably" retired I might just became a member out there.  They have done a lot of work over the last couple years , new buildings and expanding their track.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

I should be in a Sigh mood but I am not. Work was peacfull and I did not sale a darn thing. Few folks I had just could not understand why a $200.00 futon and mattress felt like a $200.00 futon and mattress. Huh? Yep, your collage student will do great after sleeping on that thing!

Reason I am in a good mood?

Train Front! Felt like working on trains when I got home tonight. Blew off my normal home book keeping duty's. My Atlas B&O GP 38 and PK 2000 B&O GP 30 needed some oil. Next I reporgramed a second PK 2 B&O G 30 to run with the first 2 engines I listed. Then I got another Round House B&O coal car on the rails. 8 out of 10 making the rounds so far.

Gary Yep that was a bad day for UP. Is that a GE AC 4000? (Never Mind, just took a second look) I had 2 of them in UP Colors by Blue Line. Talk about a POS engine! One caught on fire and sold it and the other one on E-Bay for parts. Only engine I have owed that where bigger POS where Athearn Big Boys! First time they where out. One could only pull 20 cars?

Thanks, Garry. That is very nice of you to say!

FRRYKid: I do use goldenrod, picked in the fall when it goes to seed and gets all fluffy. Trim to a tree-like shape and spray the trunk a brown color. I used to then spray the tops green and immediately dump mixed green ground foam on the still wet paint, but I found that the foam would become unstuck after a few years. Now I spray them with the cheapest hairspray I can find( aquanet) and dump on the foam. This method seems to work better.

Sorry for the crappy photo. I am in the same boat as you, modeling NW Wisconsin I need ,literally, thousands of trees.

Ones on the right are goldenrod.  On the left are furnace filter pines.

I did a how-to thread a few years back titled fast, cheap and easy trees. Or something like that!

There's probably 100-150 trees in this pic. It's about 10' long here:

Hope that helps.

FRRYKid .... There are techniques for making large numbers of trees without spending lots of money. The guy who is good at it is Terry in Wisconsin, but he does not post here often. I'm sure he will gladly show his way of doing it if he stops in here at the Diner.... Meanwhile, I suggest you search You Tube to see if any model railroaders show how they make trees.

Part of it as well goes back to the fact that some of the methods for making trees just don't look realistic to me. (Especially the scratch pad and toothpick method.) I had gotten supplies to make them from furnance filters, but I haven't gotten the hand of that either.

FRRYKid.  I recall Terry used goldenrod plants to make trees but could be wrong. No furnace filters were used. Results were very realistic.

Ulrich.  Regardless of what our "leaders" call it,  evil is evil, and mass murder is mass murder.  Americans are deeply saddened by the tragic news from Munich. Prayers for Germany .

Good Evening!

The people here in Germany are still shocked by yesterdays shooting. Officials hastily denied that it was a terrorist act, but whatever it is called, and whatever made the gunman do it, it took 10 lives, most of them children below the age of 17.

It hasn´t yet cooled off, so I was pretty lazy until thew late afternoon, when I decided to get my mind off the sad incidident. I started working on my Swiss layout again, which is far from being complete. With nothing better to do I got started on the right tunnel portal, which had so far been only a plywood contraption painted black.

After a couple of hours of scribing lines into it and giving it a coat of "stone grey" paint, it now looks like this:

Now I have to wait until the paint has dried before I can continue applying different shades of grey and white using the dry brushing technique.

It´s not perfect, but it does its job!

Good morning all.

Chloe, just a large lemonade please. Thanks.

Garry - Talk about a new intermodal load! On the bright side, they pre-loaded the wrecked loco onto a railcar, so they could just tie it down to haul it away! Laugh

YGW - Yes, scammers try to get pre-paid gift card account numbers from store employees over the phone, then they can just monitor them and capture the balance when they are sold, making for some unhappy customers, or, for the less patient ones, they try to get you to "test ring" through the register, and you are out the money from the sale, and the cards themselves. He just (unfortunately for him, fortunately for me and my store Wink) chose someone who was smarter than he is to try to fool. I knew it was funny right away, just because he had to ask if we sold them, but he "works for the company that supplies them"..... Yep. He works for them alright, and he will also be willing to sell me the Golden Gate Bridge, for the right price. Wink

Weather - Humid, hot, and hot and humid. And, before I forget to mention the heat and humidity, it is hot and humid out! 88F with a 93% Humidity level! Forecast high is 93, with heat index of over 100, approaching 110 mid afternoon... See below for fun part of that...

W**k - Big sale this weekend, started terribly slow yesterday, with just $850 by 1pm, but went crazy after that. The store I work at, is store number 5235, and, by close last night, we did $5,235.48 in sales... Yep, I think that works! Bow I ended the day at $4300 of it myself, but zero's across the board for any numbers for bonus money.... Super Angry

Well, I have to run, have a wedding to go too, and I am one of two photographers.... Photo shoot is outside, for almost 3 hours, as is the short wedding ceremony, and the colors the bride chose? Black, white, and teal... This should get real interesting! (I can already see someone, other than the groom, passing out today.....)

All have a good day!

Good morning folks, a glass of ice tea.  It is hot already 90 or 32 for Ulrich and it's not yet 11 am.  Temps are supposed to "feel like" the low 100's for the next few days.

About 100 miles west they grow a lot of apples.  Varieties at road side stands you never see in the supermarket.  Gala is my favorite eating apple.  I looked up heirloom apples and you can buy Ulrich's German apple.  I used to have fruit trees.  I did not use spray and did not get fruit that survived to be edible, except cherries and the bird ate those 2 days before they were pickable.

FRRYKid .... Actaully, scenery is not very hard to do, and I encourage you to try doing more.

The main idea for my layout (at least the area that needs most of the scenery) is lumber. That means I need lots of trees. The problem is I have found that I don't have the patience to build the massive quantity of trees that I need. To try to buy the amount of trees would be out of my budget range.

I am good at rough scenery. It's just the finish scenery that I seem to have the issue with. (I do have a Kalmbach scenery book that I need to read a little closer.)

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Been a stressfull day some of it is in my mind and some by stupid companys. My wife heath care insurances caused some of the stress. Called her at home (she would not pick up the phone) and the message they left said they where dropping her coverage because of none payment. She flipped out and called me at work. While I was late making the payment it was made, but the records where at the house! Whistling When I got home, the next payment is not due to 7-31-16. Wife does not belevie me or the statment I showed her. Bang Head

Charter Srewed Up. Long story made short, went to pay my bill and a promo did not take. They fixed that and instead of paying $189.00 I paid $155.00. I called home a couple of times today and phone was fine. About 7:00 PM my daughter called and said my line line was no longer in services? Bang Head Got home and I had a dial tone? Sue could make out going calls but got no incoming calls. Now that is fixed.

 Train Front.

1 Don't look at prices more that what you are buying! I picked the cheapest wheel sets that K-10 Model Trains had. They where 36" wheels, not the needed 33" wheels. Getting Old Sucks.

Following the massacre on a regional train near Würzburg on Tuesday, in which a young refugee from Afghanistan attacked commuters with a large knife and an axe, leaving three people dead and 5 severely injured, there has been a shooting in a shopping mall in Munich, taking supposedly 10 lives and injuring many more. The attackers are at large and all life has come to a grinding halt in Munich on this beautiful summer evening. All public transport has been stopped and people are asked to stay within their homes, as further attacks are expected to happen. I am not allowed to state the origin of these attacks in here.

My prayers go out to those killed in these incidents, to those injured and maimed and to their loved ones.

Nice job with the scenery. (Unfortunately, scenery is one of my weak points. That's why my hills are either the white of the sculptamold or the raw foam. I do have a bunch of retaining walls and tunnel portals up but that is it.)

Other hobby notes: I've got the handrails for the 30 painted in the BN Green with the white ends. Hopefully, I can get the handrails attached and the ACI labels decals tonight or tomorrow. And, yes, I will put pictures up when it is done.

Afternoon Diners,

Angel - Where did you get SBSO from ? I like it by the way

Thanks for the nice comment YGW.

The SBSO name came about renaming the company into a new era. Originally it named the Sienna Transportation Lines to Black Star than keeping the town name of Sienna. I added it to the organization and and town name to a new reporting mark as Sienna Black Star Organization.

Nothing to difficult, I had to make sure a real railroad didn't have the same reporting marks. Another one was BSOR, but it was taken.
