RT ... Thank you very much for telling us the sad news. I really liked Jerry's comments in the Diner, and how he always concluded with "Have a good one" ..... Also RT, feel free to visit the Diner when you can. I hope you are doing well.

Hey guys,

Mostly waiting for stuff in the mail. Basically containers (NACS & Hanjin w/o website letters), and a Dash 9-44CW BNSF Warbonnet.

I'm still a little upset about the Kato Amtrak baggage car. Not being accurate for the number it was given. Well at least I will have a 7 car set. I wonder if the Regal Dome (Santa Fe 4-4-2 sleeper) ever received Phase I paint after 1974.

Good Afternoon,

Well that is really sad news about Jerry. He was the same age as me, born in the same month.  I had been following his posts on the N scale forum but noticed there hadn't been anything from him for a month or so. I know he had some health issues but still, it is very sad to hear he is gone. He sure loved his N scale and especially the IC.  His wife passed away almost exactly 3 years ago.

That is indeed sad news. Hadn't heard from him in a while. Sometimes saw posts from him in the Yahoo N Scale Yard Sale, but not recently. Not a good week this, is it? CryingAngel

YGW,

Regarding the need for passports when travelling between the US and Canada, you are correct they aren't required for land crossings only, however to avoid that need you must have a special drivers license. In my province you have to apply for it and actually have an interview. If accepted you get a special license.

You actually will need the passport (assuming no special drivers license) to get back into the US.

As most of our travel is by air, we have passports. At least they changed to rules a while ago so when we renewed last fall we were able to get them for a 10 year period.

Today is a great day for me. For the first time in months I have the sights and sounds of trains running in my office. Even better is the fact that all of the track and turnouts are working. Plus it is my grandson's sixth birthday. He told me, "I turned six on May sixth, twenty-sixteen! That's a lot of sixes!" I only wish he didn't live 1,000 miles away so he could have told me in person, and I could have had birthday cheesecake.

That´s the way! the Port of Hamburg has some pretty tight spots, so they use tugs to pull the ships to their assigned mooring spots.

Those tugs can turn on the spot - see the following video!

Garry - What is a derby pie ?

The name, Derby Pie, is actually a trademark of the restaurant near Louisville that made the first recipe for it in 1950. You can Google for more info, but it is a pie with chocolate and walnuts in a pastry.

Many of the tug boats no longer have a rudder, the wheel spins 360 degrees to provide directional thrust.  I had a chance to drive a USCG bouy tender in the Kennebec during the late 60s. that had this arrangement. It was neat to be able to come into the dock sideways.  The ships wheel was mounted fore and aft, rather than port/starboard. that was different. We would provide labor to take the replacement chain for our fish boat moorings. If a crew got caught doing somthing like that today they would probably finish their enlistment doing icebreaker duty  up in Iceland.

Herrinchoker wrote " We would provide labor to take the replacement chain for our fish boat moorings. If a crew got caught doing somthing like that today they would probably finish their enlistment doing icebreaker duty  up in Iceland." Not familiar with this. Why is this so bad ?

Phil - Oh - okay. I wasnt offended. I tended to agree.

Garry - Oh walnuts and chocolate.

Ulrich - Those look lie "webbles that wobble but dont fall down" : )

Richard - Grats on grandsons BD.

CN - Thanks what is the special license ?

DER - Why not ? What is scary about coming here with out a pass port ? I can think of other things here that would scare me like the US Government saying " we are here to help you" That would make me go running for the hills !

We were civillians, working on a USCG vessel, today the- LIABILITY- word comes to mind, along with, Not Authorized, taking-(although used) of government material ad infinitum!!!

It was a different world back then, the working relationship with the Coast Guard and the fishing community was much different. The CG was under the Dept. of the Treasury, not Homeland Security- and their primary mission was life saving- not what some bureaucrat having  a thought of the minute came up with. The coasties on the 42-44 foot boats were much more proficient than the ones we have today, in a word, experienced--this is the result of management not knowing how to manage, being driven by a bureaucracy that does not have the first clue.

The quality of the coasties has not changed, just the leadership from the nations capital---gotta quit-----

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer Please and a Barry Burger.

Jerry may you rest in peace.

Man I need to stop hanging out here, we are dropping like fly's.

Work was unreal, only one customer today and she wanted a Love Seat? We don't sale love seats!

Yard Wars I may have a plan around the leaning fence post! After I do some checking I will post the possible solution.

YGW Yep, I messed up on the boards, not suer how I got 8" wide in my head? Whistling Any word on the estate sale?

With the passing of Jeffery, Barry and Jerry it has got me thinking. I have bought trains of E-Bay that where part of estate sale. Guess my train's will be here after I am gone as well. I wonder where my trains will wind up after I am gone? Hope who ever gets them enjoyes them as much as I do.

Computer Wars Tried to reformat the new computer with the used hard drive I was given. Bang Head Hard drive I was given still had some Window's 7 stuff on it and kept trying to fix Windows 7 and not install XP Pro? Hum, will mess with it a little more but I think I am fighting a lost cause.

 Later, Ken

Good Afternoon!

It´s the hottest day this year at 25°C and a lovely day. Not a cloud in sight!

I am on my way to my friend Lotha´s place for a chat and a look at what he has accomplished on his layout in recent weeks. Petra´s glad to have me out of her way as she wants to do some house cleaning. No comment - I´d rather make a different use of the nice weather!

The Elbe river is usually underestimated. It is a tidal waterway with strong currents. The wallowing of the tugs is done on purpose - it´s their "dance".

Good morning, I guess.  Still cloudy and well below normal temperatures.  I've got to ferry my wife and her friends to the airport later, so I'll get out in a while for a walk.  That will have to suffice for my daily exercise.  The wife will be in Ireland for two weeks so I won't have to be her tech support and service module for a while.

The new printer is on its way and should arrive here tomorrow, probably while I'm going to the airport again to pick up my daughter and her boyfriend, who are getting back from a vacation in Iceland.

Why don't I go on these trips?  Hey, I'm retired.  I'm on vacation all the time.  Why mess it up with the stress of travel?

Sigh

Morning Crew,

I am saddened by the notice that Illinois Southern Jerry Cox has passed. He was a very likable modeller who has endured a lot and his wife, Sally did as well. My prayer for them is that they are together and resting in peace. Once again, a member here who was much too young to have to depart.

I've been very busy with all sorts on things since returning from Billings and this week-end I am back at work today and tomorrow. Haven't had an opportunity to even unload all the goodies I brought back.

Last year we had to take down a very large Green Ash tree that my boys planted as a twig from school 35 years ago as It had become ill, and that left a void that gave us alot of sun onto our deck. While Stateside, I got a real sweet deal on an 8x8 crank up umbrella, so last evening I assembled it and bolted it down on the SW. corner of our deck so that it will keep the deck a little cooler while we sip a Dr. P. or a lemonaide. That would be my wife and family not me. I have used the tube in my car but not just outside.

I really wonder what happened to Choo Choo Wille (Dennis). We haven't heard from him for over a year now, sure hope he is well. Does anyone have an update on him ?

Der John and Ulrich, really enjoy watching your planning. Both layout plans look great.   I am just not sure about "N"   too small for me.

Br. Elias, glad to see you are back up to speed.

Rob C.  sure great to see you in here. It's been awhile. Chloe, Bring Rob and the Boys a double RBF to celebrate and put it on my Tab. Rob, I hope all is well on the ranch and with your health too.

We really need some rain here now. We are not as bad off as in the Fort MacMurrey area of Alberta, but it will be and we already have had a number of fires in the North of the Prov.  It would also give me an excuse to be down in the train room away from some yard work and Honey Dooos.

Well better get back to work here, so I hope this finds you all well or on the mend.

James, (Moonboy) are you coming back north again this year to seed some wild oats,  OOPS, Oops - Sign I mean, that is, harvest some wild rice ?   and when ?

Prayers and blessing to all.  Keep smiling, it looks good on all of you.

Good afternoon.  Managed to get the grass mowed before it started to sprinkle.  YGW, I guess we are close enough to share all the rain.  The wife says the forecast is for rain all next week, also.

Johnboy, yes, I am planning on going north again this summer.  Plan to leave after the National NMRA meeting in Indianapolis which I believe ends July 9th.  I will put in a prayer for rain for the north.  The Fort Mac situation sure is awful.  Talked to my friend yesterday and he said the smoke had been heading basically south and hadn't drifted across Saskatchewan where he lives.  His son had been working north of Fort Mac and had to evacuate back to Edmonton.  I guess it was pretty rough going heading south.

Garry, haven't seen or had Derby pie for ages.  I think Morrison's Cafeteria used to sell Derby pie.  I do remember that it was a kind of chocolate pie and pretty tasty.

The passport issue for travel to Canada and back appears to becoming more complicated in the future.  I read where starting sometime next year airline travel will also require additional paperwork.  Surface travel appears to be heading for requiring a passport.  We have used passports for several years to cross the border going both ways.

Train front, the forth turnout is almost completely spiked down and I am ready for the big clean up phase tomorrow.

Sorry to see another modeler pass on.  RIP Jerry.

Time for pork chops and then another exciting Stanley Cup play off game tonight.  Curious to see if the Penguins can finish off the Caps.  Should be a great game.

The Elbe, eh?

Greater than the Grand Canyon, is the Hudson Canyon stretching out 400 nm to see and over 10,000 feet deep...

It is a very powerful river. See more on the Hudson Canyon.

And even more interesting...

I received an email from Inch .... He is unable to log in, and would like to post here.

I know we heard the sad story about Jerry already, but here is what Inche said

"I'm askin for a favor,,, if you would post this in the diner for me, as I'm unable to post for some reason. can't even sign out, so I can sign in again on windows.

many thanks

I’d stopped by to visit Jerry this past Mon. He seemed to be doing ok, but tired, so I didn’t stay long. He was sitting up enough to watch his trains run.

Jerry’s been in n out of the hospital the last couple months with his diabetic problems. The last couple times for high CO2 and had to be on high oxygen.

He’s at peace now and with his Sally. Rest in peace my very good friend..

Happy Days are here again, the power is back on! Power went off at 5:00 PM while I was at work. On the way home I bought 28 pounds of ice to help keep the food cool.

After the sun went down I read Model Railroader Magazine by candle just like Honest Abe. While 5 hours is not the longest I have went with out power it sure seemed long.

I will catch up on the post Sunday before work.

Sad couple weeks here with Barry and jerry and has galaxy been in yet? I have seen dennis ( chochwillie ) or Paul ( pascaff ) has anybody heard from them by anychance

hope everybody has a good Sunday

No response! Am I the only one showing up today? Well, Jeremy´s been around, but we missed each other by a mere 7 hours!

With no one to talk, I just stay a moment at the RC, finish my nightcap and head slowly for the hay!
