. . .Richard how does heat deactivate bleach. . .

I am not sure how the hot water stops the sanitizing effects of bleach. Perhaps the agent in bleach that kills germs is ruined by heat. (Any biochemists in the diner?) As I mentioned, it is only the germ-killing asp ct of bleach that is affected by hot water. Bleach in hot water will still turn red things pink.

Here I sit, fat dumb and contemplating life....

Yesterday was WARM...we set a record for warmth...58F officially high on the hilltop at the aeroporta. Probably warmer here in the valley. It sure felt it as I was running around in shorts and T shirt.

VERY producive day yesterday too. Hung up 2 5-hook broome and mop holders, and one push-in the clip style broom holder.  One was hung up in the stairwell, and two in the garage.

ALso put up a rather large plastic bag holder in the stairwell. Cleaned up/bagged the loose returnable bottles for the $0.06 each into bags to take to the redemption center. Cleaned up half the garage and brought in most of the kitchen stuff that was in the garage.

Swept it out and filled the fluids in the van, checked the oil, and added the new blind spot mirrors to the side mirrors. Cleaned the windows, emptied the trash out of it.

whew, it makes me tired loooking at it all I did, MOH only helped a little. typical.

SO in other words, took advantage of the warm spring-like day to get some stuff done!

today is more projects to get the house in sort of order. I will see what i can get into today! Only 38-40 today, but I am doe for now in the garage i think,b ut will bring int he foam-over-open-grid-work small 3.5'x5.1' layout base to the basement today with MOH's help. That will clear that out of the garage. since it was NOT finalized, the track was only pinned down and was taken up, so NOT as simple as set it up and run trains. I DO have a table down there though, kitchen table I COULD set up and lay some track on to run trains! MAYBE. I have to assemble the legs on the table and organze the crap in the basement for the ROOM to set up a table of any sort.

well, THat is about it for now.

After 2 weeks of non-stop working and trade show event, I finally got back into the train room. New Year's Day Harbor Freight had their sale where they have a 25% coupon, not the every day 20. I bought the Bunker Hill 2 camera & monitor systerm as I need to be able to view the staging tracks on the lower level. It's at 38" in heightm and theres's only less than a foot of space between each levels, and also 30" deep. For the value, this works great. Now I need to call them to make sure I can add a second unit in the room and they won't interfere with each other. Neal

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen!

Lazy Sunday afternoon
I've got no mind to worry
I close my eyes and drift away-a Whistling

Not much going on at this end of the Big Pond! It´s a dull day for a dull mind! I did some work on the river scene, just some painting, sealing and pouring WS Realistic Water, which I still have left over from my Japanese N scale layout. That stuff had been stored in the attic for a few years and was subjected to some significant changes in temperature, so I hope it still cures well. Tomorrow will tell!

No pictures, yet.

I am waiting for a few odds and ends to arrive from the hobby shop. I am out of stuff to continue. I have a few trees on order, paint for the bridge and some scenic stuff. I hope my order will be delivered next week.

Zoe, only coffee for me, please and ask that new guy Neal what his poison is going to be. Put it on my tab!

Have a good one!

We had some of that nice weather here, too.  Yesterday I got on my bicycle (the mountain bike) and took off down the trail of the old right-of-way from the long-defunct Billerica and Bedford Railroad.  I got a couple of hundred feet in, realized there was still snow and ice all over the trail, and promptly retreated.  I spent the next hour and a half on paved surfaces, which was very pleasant.  Today is a bit cooler, so I may or may not take another ride.

I ran some trains yesterday, and discovered that my other powered subway car was not running well.  It would not keep running, so I cleaned the wheels and gave it some run time, and it seems fine now.  The other powered car has a burned-out decoder, which I'll have to replace.

Neal .... The camera and moniter system is a great idea.

Ulrich ... I hope the WS water works well. I do not know how long a shelf life it has.

Lion ..... I can almost hear the subway noises when I see your photos.

Ken .... The Great Northern was like the B&O, and operated its ealry SD's and early GP's long end forward. CB&Q SD7's and SD9's had dual controls and were operated either way.

Edit: ... Good morning Mr. B

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the breakfast buffett and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug please.

I'm playing hookey from Church again this week...  Was planning on going but overslept.  That's my excuse and I'm sticking by it!  I will do some work for the MLK Committee instead.  At least that is hopefully doing some good works for the community...  Have several items that have toi be done by Tuesday Night for the meeting.

Last night I did make it down to the train room and got some scenery started and did some wiring for the return loop where the new bridge is.  Also took some measurements and finigled a bunch of stuff in my mind like what needs to get done in what order...

Galaxy, good to hear you have been busy.  Hopefully that is a good sign for you.  Look forward to seeing some model railroad building in the future!

Take care everyone! I'll catch youa later.

GM everyone

Made it to MB Klein (modeltrainstuff) where they did not impress me with organization.  One customer wanted to buy a loco out of the display case and it took 3 guys to look for the box.  When they found it, all had to inspect it like some sort of forensic investigation.

Only one of those guys is the guy who takes your order and goes back into the warehouse.  The turnouts were on a rack too high to conveniently read the small labels and there were only one or two of each, and the flex track box was empty.

My turn came and I handed him my order and off he went, came back with a couple small things, looked at the empty track box, almost paralyzed by the fact that even though he stocked it last week, it was indeed empty.  Finally he mustered the courage to open a 100 round case and hand me what I needed.

He emptied the display of a couple different turnouts then went back to the warehouse to get the rest of the turnouts I needed, but none for the empty display rack.

Their expert in DCC was off and they didn't have the loksound board I wanted.  Stopped by the only specialty electronic store around expecting they would have cheap wire and led's.  Neither was cheap. I bought some small heat shrink tubing, probably overpaid.

From what I can tell by now, it looks if it´s OK. There is no hint on the bottle, but I bet the stuff is well over 5 years old.

Good Afternoon Diners!  Got back from the recent trip on Thursday last – and actually saw some train action! That was in the container yards for the CERES Corp wharf in the Bedford Basin, (Halifax NS) I began the replies below the day before we left – so, as you’ll gather from the quotes, stale news – but here we are:
Ulrich:
I don´t have a semi-professional video editing software, so I have to make do with the Windows MovieMaker CryingIt´s still fun, though!
Did you ever run across AVS4U Video Editor? (http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Editor.aspx?type=GoogleAdWordsSearch&gclid=CP2grsX__MoCFQouHwodHF8Dlg)
I’ve used that from time to time with good results.
The first whistle will be put into a sound module and can be triggered by a push button on the control panel - I bet Petra will not like it Laugh!
Ah, the push button solution. Tried and true. Is the duration determined by the length of “push”?

Jeremy: Condolences for your loss. We are waiting to hear about a New Hampshire friend who was doing so well in her fight against Pancreatic cancer – but it suddenly took a savage turn. She was put in Palliative care in the hospital where she worked – but we haven’t had word recently….Angel (Update, she lost her battle too Wednesday)

YGW: Thanks for the Kelly update. Prayers continuing as suggested.Angel
Mr. B we used to put a 100 watt bulb near pipe that froze a lot. Once we did that we didn’t have any more frozen pipes. If the pipes are exposed there is "heat tape" that can also be used.
We used to hang a trouble light down our well on the shore on the really bad nights – the pipe elbow where the line to the house exited the well casing had a way of freezing up. The light could be put quite close to that join, and did the trick. Also sheathed the entire above ground concrete casing in Styrofoam with a plywood covering. That helped. “Lessons learned” as they say….
So, that plus what I managed on the strange public computer at the hotel on Wednesday night, brings us up to speed….(or did at some now distant and now forgotten "point in time"!)
Ulrich:
As my digital camera is giving up its ghost,
…it’s the rechargeable batteries in ours that are flaky. I charged them up ready for the trip to see our G.Grandson, and when we came to use the camera there – kaput! I had included a pair of regular batteries “just in case” –and a good thing too!
BTW, I think your rocks are going to turn out very well, especially once the ground cover and trees are in place. (Update Sunday) The pics you posted by Friday and Saturday show that this is indeed the case! Looking very good indeed.
but I bet the stuff is well over 5 years old.
Some of the tube acrylic paints I have in storage I bought at West Edmonton Mall – so back in the early 90s. I’m interested to see if any are workable still when I come to need them …..

Found out at the LHS the other day that the next Train Show in our area will be March 26th in Moncton. So that’s my next best opportunity to get some rolling stock and buildings. By then, all being well, I’ll have a more clear idea of the types of cars I’m “needing” Whistling …and buildings Ditto.

Ray:
I shoveled and used the little snow blower for several hours today.
…at least you have the layout to which to retreat – where the grass is green and the trees have leaves! New bridge is looking Solid! Amazing how quickly the new scenes look like they’ve always been there eh?
Is it my imagination or does the width of the forum keep getting narrower and narrower every few weeks or so????
My page is getting narrower and narrower. I thought it was just me – it isn’t just the  photos (thanks for that tip BTW) but the text too. Here’s what your question looks like in a “Snip” screen grab
Man, I wish they would turn the spell checker back on at this forum!
Motion Seconded! It’s why I w*rk in WORD (and I haven’t had time to try the colour coding thing in hmtl which Cris suggested a week or three back.)
Downunder John: Hoping all goes well for your pre-op and then the op. My wife is enjoying her new lens implants – still needs reading glasses – but a huge improvement.  Cloves in the apple pie – Yes!  How about baked apples with cloves and (bitter) marmalade inside?

Mr. Beasley: Good looking houses. Customizing those puppies is one of life’s joys, I think. I did a lean-to greenhouse on my last layout. I think I’ve still got that house, so it may have a second airing!

It’s now Sunday afternoon – didn’t even check the Diner on Saturday. Ashamed My contribution to the Hand Washing theme would be that we use our dishwasher, loading up takes about two days usually. All large food bits are scraped off into the compost bag beneath the sinks. Pots and similar, bone handled knives, mugs too large to justify the space for them, and so on are handwashed in hot soapy (dish washing detergent – what, when we first came to Canada we searched for unsuccessfully in the stores as “Dish Drops” the name we knew back then in the UK) using either a brush or a scrubbing pad. Clean dishes are rinsed under running hot water, especially if the suds are plentiful, and drained on washable pad to the right of the sink. Hand drying with clean teatowel completes the process. Quality control is a shared task with no recriminations. There are set places for just about everything in the cupboards, and generally speaking there is no problem in the administration of this arrangement. We apply a “Will it matter in five years time?” policy to housekeeping trivia like that. Keeps an even domestic keel most of the time.
(By Richard) I am not sure how the hot water stops the sanitizing effects of bleach. Perhaps the agent in bleach that kills germs is ruined by heat. (Any biochemists in the diner?)
On bleach there’s this “Its active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, denatures protein in micro-organisms and is therefore effective in killing bacteria, fungus and viruses. Bleach is a strong and effective disinfectant. ... Cold water should be used for dilution as hot water decomposes the active ingredient of bleach and renders it ineffective” That’s from a quick Google search – so there you have it.

Neal: Interesting camera rig. I’ve used a tilted mirror on the wall above the “hidden” tracks  before, but that was in the 1980s…. Worked at the speed of light though even if it was low tech!

Barry: Good to read that you are doing well. I hope tomorrow’s results will allow you to return home soon.

I spent some time this afternoon following up on N Scale Forums for N narrow gauge. There were several helpful replies to a “sourcing of equipment” question I posted. One gave a link to an article on another  similar Forum. I went there and found to my surprise that I had joined THAT one in 2011! However my account has been sidetracked, so I have to get it reactivated before I can enquire further about the article.  0-6-0 Marklin Battery Powered steam? I did not know that… and am left wondering how one switches it on and off.
Mild today, but colder coming. Must get back to see if they have given me access to my account.  Font formatting has gone sideways since that Google paste, Oh well!

Oddly, I do not have this problem with anyone's posts, except for yours.  I'm guessing that something you're doing with Word is resetting the internal margins on the page.  Try just typing in a few lines without Word to see what happens.

Hey all

Hope your weekend has gine better than mine. Geez, what started out as a simple remodel of the laundry room has turned into a nightmare project. First the dryer line clogged completely shut. Installed incorrectly. Had to install a new line. Then there were two plumbing lines in the way. Got that fixed. Next part was to relocate a door that bumped another door every time it opened. In the process of that I cut a electric wire ! To fix that required removal of a lot of drywall. In my haste I didn't cover the floor or my wife's dryer and washer ( new ones ) so I guess me and the mutt will be keeping company the next few evenings. Momma ain't happy !

Good Evening.

T'was a quiet day today. I'll find out what is up here tomorrow, although I was already told I will be staying here for awhile yet.

I did find one thing though. My heart rate was down to 33 last night. Whistling

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Well, I finally was able to scan my old b+w RR pics and save them as jpegs, hence the new improved avatar.  Now, if I can only find a way to economically convert my slides.  The avatar is of a grain elevator taken either 1961-2or3.  The structure is no longer there.  However, it made a very brief cameo in opening scenes of the movie "Picnic."

YGW:  best of luck with that laundry project from a guy who can turn an hour faucet install into an entire afternoonBig SmileBig Smile.

Ken:  what ever happened to the "Buick Guy" you used to by a beer for?

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Gidday All, it’s been a while so it’s about time the drinks are on me, Chloe, if you’d be so kind.
A very belated reply to DER5997. I fully concur with you on reason behind Yorkshire Puddings, “I understand from my time in the North East of England that the original idea of YPs was to fill up the “working man” with something other than the expensive and hard to obtain meat. The time-frame would considerably pre-date wartime rationing.”
And out of curiosity I googled and found there was reference to “Yorkshire Pudding” by name in a recipe book from 1747. A lot earlier than I had thought but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

What did surprise me that as a Commonwealth country “Hot English Mustard” isn’t available as such!

Ahhhh the flag debate!! I had better be careful though while I’m sure that Cousin Vinnie doesn’t know much about New Zealand politics, I still don’t wish to have a tire iron wrapped around my noggin.
The proposed flag change is a personal project of our Prime Minister, a self made man who worked in the US before he went into politics, and believes the reason that we do not have our flag on display as much as the US is because we’re not proud of it. Actually we just don’t wear our patriotism on our “sleeve”. He also has had the misfortune of having had the Australian flag flown whilst on official occasions overseas and on visiting the New Zealand WW I Graves in Flanders noticed that the headstones are engraved with the Silver Fern, which also happens to be the symbol of our rugby team and with a black background is used by many NZ sports supporters.

The New Zealand flag is on the left, the Australian flag on the right.

The preferred flag, by 1.16%, from the first referendum, with a voter turnout of 49% is the one on the left.

Unfortunately I suspect the debate is going to get very ugly; for various reasons, the Prime Minister not wishing to lose face, the small but vocal Republican movement sensing a chance, and those, who so far appear to be in the minority, think it’s time we “rebranded” our country.
Its only just started but already we’re getting bombarded by ex politicians, celebrities and sports stars inferring that not changing is akin to be unpatriotic. I’m afraid that we are not going to see much balance.
I was never in favour of changing the flag, and the 26 million $ that’s being spent, I’m proud of what we’ve got and having seen them both flying together have not changed my mind. In fact my university attending daughter is of the opinion that the preferred option looks like a tea towel.

Speaking of which, when I wash the dishes, I scrape clean and rinse with warm  water, then wash with very hot water and a small squirt of dish washing liquid (Palmolive as it keeps my hands soft and smooth Smile, Wink & Grin), and then air-dry in a rack. Of course the Coriolis force as the water goes down the plug hole in a clockwise direction helps keep the sink extra clean!Whistling

Having glanced through the Diner windows and seen all the walking and none walking wounded in here, I realise that a flag debate in a small Pacific nation of 4.6 million people is of little consequence, so.....
Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Here I sit FAT, DUMB and contemplating life.....

Train Nut friend was over yesterday most of the afternoon. His wifey went to her aunt's funeral, he couldn't bear to go to. OS he is alone, which he admits is not good for him, os he came over. He still doesn't sleep well, as he says every time he closes his eyes, he sees Christian Hanging there dead. Wednesday Night, Hopefully I get him the "FOr those left behind" support group at General Hosptial, IF I can find out WHERE in the hospital it is. I think he will be over today and tomorrow too, as he will be alone both days.

FIL stopped by UNANNOUNCED {GRRR} while Train nut friend was here. He annoys the heck out of us whne he does that, but he is being NOSEY whe he does that.

Well, TOday's word:

Lunchtime in Germany!

Brunhilda, make that a big fat cheeseburger and greasy fries, please. Coffee to wash it down would be nice as well, thank you!

Galaxy - I know that life has been rough and tough for you lately, but please stop contemplating life, as you will miss it while doing so. Whatever your credo is, it is nowhere written that life shall be an easy one. I know that brighter days will come for you!

That said, back to MRRing!

The WS Realistic Water cured nicely over night, so it seems to be still fit for future use! There is one more water feature to do, but it will be similar to the one I did yesterday, which looks like this:

Sorry for the picture being a little too dark, but I didn´t want to use the flash. I think the river looks OK.

I used a mix of leftover latex paints to get a sort of grey which I used to paint the road and the platform. I don´t know yet whether I´ll leve it that way or re-do it. For the moment I am glad there is no plywood-look to the layout!

Painting the bridge must be next!

Have a great one!

Edit: I just found out that my "Realistic Water" shows some cracks! Bang Head  Guess I have to cover them up with WS Water Effects, which is nothing else than clear acrylic gel.

I did find one thing though. My heart rate was down to 33 last night.

I'm not sure about that one.  Are they giving you Atenolol for your blood pressure, by any chance?  Atenolol is what's called a "beta blocker" and it controls your blood pressure by slowing your heart rate.  Now, this may be entirely fine in whatever condition your condition is in, but when I was on that stuff for a few months it made me feel extremely lethargic.

Ulrich, how thick did you pour that Realistic Water?  All of those products should be done in multiple thin pours rather than a single thick pour.  Cracking can be a result of trying to do too much with a single pour.

I think I get my new tooth today.  This was one of those "dental implant" things.  An old broken tooth was removed, and once that healed up a bit a metal implant went in to replace it.  That had "bone graft powder" around it to stimulate natural re-growth of bone around the implant.  After allowing about 6 months, I was fitted for a new tooth which will attach to the implant, and the new tooth is now ready.  The whole process was kind of an uncomfortable ordeal, and was incredibly expensive, pretty much using up all my dental coverage would pay for both last year and this year.  Oddly enough, my wife is going through the same thing on the same tooth at the same time.

Morning everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic Cereal and a pot of Café Justo Dark Roasted coffee to start the day today...

According to the Weather Channel Online it is currently 36°F outside with a high today of 28°F.  Yep!  That is what it says.  Oh, If I go to the hourly chart it says it is 27°F with a high of 28° this afternoon.....  It also says it is cloudy outside which doesn't appear to jive with the shadows from the trees and the sunshine coming in my windows this morning....  Hmmmmmm....

Ulrich, bummer on the Realistic Water pour!  I have gone to using Envirotex Lite for my water scenes after having some issues with the WS stuff not drying properly (stayed tacky, so I just used the Envirotex Lite over it)

Have to get moving...  I have a long list of STUFF to get done by tomorrow night.  Catch you all later!

The red train and the pair of tracks below it are on the helix, or is it a nolix, or maby a combilix. The loops are about 14' long. Above the red train is a pair of tracks going up which make another helix going up to the upper level.

This is the other helix. On the 'back-40' the 4 track main line is alread gone up four inches before it arrives at the 34th Street Station. This helix takes it up to almost the middle level and the Prospect Park station. There is a little more up grade between the Prospect station and the Parkside Avenue station on the middle level of the back 40.

Oddly, I do not have this problem with anyone's posts, except for yours. I'm guessing that something you're doing with Word is resetting the internal margins on the page. Try just typing in a few lines without Word to see what happens.

Roger that - I was wondering if the image size has anything to do with it. Let me post one that I've got on Photobucket after we see how this plain text post functions. I'm alos going to copy this text into WORD and repost it here, if you guys can bear with me - I would like to get this sorted.

Just re-posting from WORD to test the margins.

OK, so it's not apparently a WORD margin issue - so here's the photo I wanted to show with the lean-to greenhouse.
