What about 10 wheelers, Shays, Climaxes, Heislers, 0-4-0s, 0-6-0s, 2-10-4s, 2-8-8-4, 4-8-8-2s etc. But, I really like 10 wheelers and Mikes.

Out of the choices that you gave, the prairie is my favourite. My real favourite is a ten-wheeler, but you did not give that as a choice.

Your giving of a 2-6-4 as a choice is curious. The only North American 2-6-4s of which I am aware are tank engines. While Lionel, Gilbert or one of the tin-plate manufacturers did (and maybe still do) offer a 2-6-4 with a tender, I do not know of any US, Mexican or Canadian road that had any like that.

OH YES the BR standard 9,,, 2-10-0 worked on the footplate/ in the cab a couple of years ago on 92212 a very economical free steaming monster, why did they put an end to steam,

My favorite steam locomotive is the first Northern class, Northern Pacific #1111 called "four aces". I can't believe they let it go to the torch.

My second favorite is Santa Fe's Heavy Baldwin 2-6-2 #1819. It is still on display in Lamar Colorado. People too often overlook the small locomotives when looking for favorites.

Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 611 and Southern 2-8-2 4501 which were both used on the now discontinued NORFOLK SOUTHERN steam excursion program

Well, as usual, I'm with Aggro on the M-4 yellowstone and the SP AC-6 Cab-forward. I'd also add a Rio Grande L-131 2-8-8-2, L-105 4-6-6-4, and just because of the way they looked, a Northern Pacific Z-class 4-6-6-4. Oh, yah, and the Rio Grande C-41 2-8-0. Chunky little monster, that.

This one is a kind of wide open question. I like a sizable number of steam engines for a number of reasons. I voted for the 4-8-8-4 arrangement because it is my favorite as far as size goes as well as it's powerful look. I like the 4449 because of the sleek lines and the Daylight scheme the S.P. used. I liked the 844 because of it's sheer size as I stood next to the track when it left the depot on an excursion trip a bunch of years ago rattling my inside as it passed. I have a fondness for a certain 2-8-2 Mikado and Heisler I get to work with in the Sumpter Valley Restoration Railway in Oregon. I always liked the cab forwards due to the different look they presented. And I liked the 2-8-8-2 Mallets for their brute strength and looks. If you like steam, it's hard to have just one favorite, I think, unless you're an old head that has a particular fondness for one engine because you worked on a certain line with a certain engine. With me, I just like steam and the fact that there are so many organizations that dedicate themselves to restoring and running their treasures.

I find the AC-6 the most intresting of the Cab-forwards. It has the boiler and smoke box mounted air compressors of the late versions, and the drivers, cab, and tender of the earlier units.

I voted for the 4-8-8-4, it has few chalengers in size and look (if you are thinking of a powerfull look.

One good comparison in my oppinion is the 70 ton 3 truck Shay. When in motin it has a special "out of my way" look. With the fast moving parts and low speed(12mph).

I rode one from Cass WV. to Bald Knob WV. (11miles exactly) and then back.

No 4-6-0 'Ten Wheeler's! Now that was a very popular dual service engine before the turn of the century(1900 that is). I did vote for the 28-2 myself and that 2-6-4: I do not think any US roads had these!

Gresley P2 2-8-2. These had streamlining that made them look not unlike the better-known A4 Pacifics, and I'd really like one in OO - problem is, nobody does it RTR (how about it Hornby, it would sell!), and I can't find a kit for one.

Another one I'd like to build looked like a baby A4 - the LNER built 2 streamlined 4-6-0s based on their "Sandringham" class locos, have considered kitbashing one from Hornby bits but making the bodyshell work would be very tricky - making the valances line up properly would be almost impossible. Might still have a go though, Hornby spare bodyshells are cheap enough unpainted!

Aggro--agree with you on the AC-6--it was the first cab-forward I ever rode in as a kid between Truckee and Norden. My great-uncle Tom (who was the brakeman), made sure that my cousin and I knew the classification so that we could tell them apart from the other AC's that ran through town. It was also the first AC to jump from 116,000 TE to 124,000TE. One of them, I forget which number, actually ended up with a streamlined cab, which made it look REALLY interesting! I think it was #4137, but don't

For me it has to be the mighty berkshires, of course being a TH&B fan Hudson are my second choice
