what is your favorite steam locomotive?

You do not list my favorite locomotive. I am very partial to the Denver and Salt Lake 2-6-6-0 locomotives. To my knowledge, only PFM ever had a model of this locomotive, and I do have one of their engines. I hope it is reasonably accurate because I have used it as a guide to scratchbuild 3 additional copies. They operate around 30" mailine curves in HO gauge without any real overhang (it is not a large locomotive, just flexible for all the curves on the prototype road).

I like the big CNR 4-8-4's nothin beats the heavy mountains or Confederations as they were called for a while on the CNR.[:D]TB

I like the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys, but chose "other" because I also like 4-6-6-4 Challengers, which wasn't even an option. I like the big, articulated steamers, but not exclusively. I also pretty much like any other kind of steam locomotive, since they are more or less a novelty these days, and I'm not old enough to remember otherwise. I also have a fondness for Shays since I saw one in action near Yosemite.

My all time favourite has to be the Great Western Railway Castle Class. One of finest express locomotives ever built . I have built several models in both 4mm & 7mm from brass & nickel kits, so there you have it.
However, on your side of the pond, it has to be the C.P.R. H1b Hudson a truly majestic beast. Where can I get a kit of one or will I have to scratch build it.??? PLS.

To me I think it would been something seeing a BIG BOY plow its way up Sherman Hill or probably my favorite seeing one fights its way through the Appalachians on the Clinchfield. If I had to pick another one it would mostly be Norfolk and Western 2-6-6-4 mainly because I love the wail of the whistle as it echos off the mountains.......

OH YES the BR standard 9,,, 2-10-0 worked on the footplate/ in the cab a couple of years ago on 92212 a very economical free steaming monster, why did they put an end to steam?

I like the 2-8-0 Consolidation. Just because the WP had many. And I ride twice a year on the Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield, a train pulled by a 2-8-0, here in Quebec.

My favorite is the Little River Logging 2-4-4-2 Mallet for it uniqueness. I am also a big fan of the 2-8-2 Mikado.

Not this Canuck, was there anything better than a dusty, grimy, greasy C.P.R. 2-8-2 P2j 'Mike" chuffing around the prairies, pulling real trains. Just wish someone would have preserved a few of these. I wi***here was a big enough market for plastic models of C.P.R. engines, oh. I can always buy a $1200.00 brass loco eh???

I like 4-8-4 Northerns, but, my vote for this goes in as other, because it is a tie between Pennsy's J1 2-10-4 Texas, and Union Pacific's 4-12-2.

Aggro--agree with you on the AC-6--it was the first cab-forward I ever rode in as a kid between Truckee and Norden. My great-uncle Tom (who was the brakeman), made sure that my cousin and I knew the classification so that we could tell them apart from the other AC's that ran through town. It was also the first AC to jump from 116,000 TE to 124,000TE. One of them, I forget which number, actually ended up with a streamlined cab, which made it look REALLY interesting! I think it was #4137, but don't

Gresley P2 2-8-2. These had streamlining that made them look not unlike the better-known A4 Pacifics, and I'd really like one in OO - problem is, nobody does it RTR (how about it Hornby, it would sell!), and I can't find a kit for one.

Another one I'd like to build looked like a baby A4 - the LNER built 2 streamlined 4-6-0s based on their "Sandringham" class locos, have considered kitbashing one from Hornby bits but making the bodyshell work would be very tricky - making the valances line up properly would be almost impossible. Might still have a go though, Hornby spare bodyshells are cheap enough unpainted!

No 4-6-0 'Ten Wheeler's! Now that was a very popular dual service engine before the turn of the century(1900 that is). I did vote for the 28-2 myself and that 2-6-4: I do not think any US roads had these!
