I have units in all four types.I presently run diesel freight(pair of DD40AX,SD70,AC4400) as they're my only decoder equipped units but the rest of my roster(pair of SD45,SD50,SD90,Challenger,Mallet,Mikado and other steamers) will be used as soon as my budget allows me to convert them to DCC.

Six Berkshires, two Mikados and a consolidation all simmering away on the ready tracks next to a 400-ton coal dock, waiting for three 0-8-0s to assemble their trains, which are currently waiting for a Mike to bring a train onto track #2, while a meat reefer block heads out of track #1, pulled by two Berkshires.

That's what my main yard will look like once the track gangs get that far. I think I'll have to vote steam freight!

Steam passenger service is utterly stunning in every respect.

Having said that, I love stream freight, and diesel freight, and diesel passenger. I LOVE TRAINS!!!!

What could be better?

A long freight with a 2-10-2 and a 2-8-2 on the point, three 2-10-2's cut in the middle, and two 2-10-2's just ahead of the caboose, all sending massive plumes of smoke skyward as they blast up Cajon Pass in a deafening cacaphony of the symphony of steam, shaking the ground as they pass....

I voted for the steam passenger train, because a pacific or a mountain flying down a speedway with whistle blasting , throwing a hiuge cloud of smoke (hey, *bleep* the fuel savings, we need speed which means we need steam which requires fire) as it hustles its mail train to its destination is railroading at its best.

Mail trains are also ideal modeller's trains because you can throw anything onto it and even mix roads with the passenger equpment.

Although I do have to admit that the consist of CRI&P 15 in one issue of the CLASSIC TRAINS caught my attention: head end cars, an RDC followed by another coach--there is an interesting consist for a diesel powered train. I wonder if 15 ever looked like that but with a steam engine on it.

Whoa, Trainjunky, I thought you were talking about SP in the Siskiyous there for a moment, not Santa Fe in Cajon! Either one is a pretty darned spectacular show! Have to go with steam freight--and steam passenger. Something about all that noise and chuffing and clanking that kind of gets to me, always has. My dream is a big 2-8-8-4 (or 2-8-8-2) at the head of a long reefer block, with a couple of 4-8-2's cut in, one in the middle and one ahead of the caboose, all whacking up a mountain grade at 25 or 30MPH. Or a big, beautiful 4-8-4 at the head of a string of Pullman Standard cars with passengers crowding the deck of the observation car going OOH and AAH at the scenery. Gets me every time.

Now..... if I only could find 60 or 70 ft heavyweight undecorated coaches with 4 wheel trucks........
