Ken ... You certainly are a man with good feelings. Your concern about Dave shows you have a big heart. ... There was a thread in the main forum which was deleted this morning. It pertained to a topic forbidden in the forum, and forum members were arguing. Apparently, it bothered Ulrich a lot. I suspect Ulrich knows the Diners are his friends no matter what, and look forward to seeing him here when he feels comfortable returning. .... I hope you can end smoking. I can't say I relate to what you are going through with that. When I tried it as a teenager, I thought it tasted horrible. I never wanted to try again.... I like the photo of the N&W coal train.

Ulrich I had the same problem with those stupid people commenting on for the anti-gun ad that people report. It's just a gun with a train picture draw on.
Too bad, sad your leaving us...
My mom lost her Tupperware midget cup at work this morning I hope she'll find it tonight. So I bought a 5 pack used on EBay for $12 dollars.

cudaken Evening Dinners Flo, Lemonade Please. Soory I have not posted any the last few days. Just been down in the dumps, nothing speical set it off just down for some reason? Work Front Well the other shoe dropped on Dave! Dave is no longer my problem, or the companys if fact. Yes they gave him the AX! While I am glad to be rid of him, I am still sad about the whole thing. I just hope this is the wake up call he needed to beat his habit. I do wish him and his family well. My battel with smoking. I am making head way on stopping, well more slowing down. Today I went 5.5 hours at work with out lighting up. A small step, but a step. I hope to hear back Tuesday from the Stop Smoking Clinic of the VA. Again I am a lost about what set Ulrich off? Was it the fact they where talking about on the main page that was not about trains, or was it the fact he is anti gun's? Eithet way I home he makes it back to the dinner. V8 Vega Was the post you made here at the dinner about the Baby thing about Ulrich? I know you did not type it, justed posted it. See you all later, Ken

That is my post. It was not about anyone per se, but rather about the idea that it is the persons job to know what offends anyone and to never say it. As Harry Truman said "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen." If you are the sensitive type and see a forum topic that will generate strong opinions it may be better if you avoid such topics. I prefer blunt talk for the simple reason that I know where you stand. But I was a professional musician/preformer for a long long time and you devolope a thick skin.
I smoked a pack and a half a day for 25 years. Have not had one since December 16, 1994. Quitting is possible. My wife worked as a RN in a vent jhospital where smokers went to die. If you want incentive to quit take a tour of one of those places.
Sir MadogThe gun ad in November MR is again a controversely discussed issue. I am shocked by some of the statements, given the fact that the Roseburg shooting happened only a few days ago. I am sorry, but I had my fill now - I won´t come back here!
I am sorry, but I had my fill now - I won´t come back here!
V8VegaWhat happened to the thread about (Gasp) guns ads in MR?
This is why religion and politics are forbidden topics here. I'm in favor of this restriction, and if I myself step over the line I hope someone will slap my knuckles with a ruler and throw a yellow flag.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Although I am a 3railer I do peruse the other scales for ideas and inspiration when it comes to trains and seeing the comments w/regards to smoking I just had to give my .
Having been a smoker for 50+ years probably contributing to my heart attack which then put me in the "Congestive Heart Failure" category you'd think I would wise up and quit, nope. However with the heart getting better for 2+ years then starting to degrade for the next year and a half my cardiologist suggested a pacer/defib implant to help stabilize the heart and increase the meds to help.
To make a long story short, the specialist who would do the implant procedure had a very blunt and straight forward pre-op meeting with me and my wife. Her comments were that there are all kinds medical procedures and devices that could enhance your longevity of life but in the end you will die, that is a fact of life. However if you do not quit smoking, regardless of what we do, you will die a hell of a lot sooner than later. Sometimes a stubborn old fart like myself needs to be hit right between the eyes to get their attention.
That was in mid June of this year and I quit cold turkey when I left her office that day and haven't had one since. And the implant procedure went smooth as silk.
It can be done, it ain't easy but it can be done.

On a more cheerful note, good morning to all! Oops, good afternoon.
I surrendered to the weather gods yesterday and went to the gym for my daily workout. It's too cold for a comfortable bike ride most days, although it looks like we'll have a bit of Indian Summer later in the week. So, I did 40 minutes at a brisk walk on the treadmill. Some of the "scenery" was nice, but from now on I need to include a cheap pair of headphones in my gym bag. They've got a half-dozen TV monitors and a jack to select your audio channel.
Afternoon everyone!
Chloe, Ill have the fruit salad plate and another pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for lunch.
Doug, well said and so very true!!! I've lost too many friends because they were of the stubborn sort and doctors don't know anything crowd....
I got some old chicken wire removed from the back shed this morning. Been going to do that all summer but figured it was going to be pain to remove. Turns out it took less than 10 minutes and I cut it down using a hard wire cutter I have for the Models. I plan to rototill the area behind the shed and put a raised bed along it to put in pole beans next year. The chicken wire was there at the bottom of the shed from back when the days when I had a full garden behind it and helped to keep bunnies and other critters out of the garden.
Also got a touch done on the bridge while the wash was going. Now I'm off to my sister's house to feed and play with Claud the cat. He is a sweetie! My sister comes hopme tomorrow so this is the last day I have to go over there to take care of him. Of course I bet you know who gets to drive to Rochester to pick little sister up at the airport.......
Catch you all later!

Well, hte surgeon siad hte problem is not my shoulder, it is in my neck. with arthritis rampant in my body, every bone wiht a nerve in 2' of it is being affected, basically. Now for an MRI of my neck to see if he can do something aobut it or if I ahve ot live with it.
Dunno now, wiating for the MRI call to schedule.
Hope LION fares well today.

dougdagrumpIt can be done, it ain't easy but it can be done.
I don't stop into the diner too often, but Mr. Grumps closing statement caught my eye.
Tomorrow I am going in for shoulder surgery to repair a Labral tear, Rotator cuff tear and have a shoulder decompression to clean out all of the crap in the joint that we "High Mileage" units tend to accumulate over the years.
Last week I was in for the pre-op blood work, ECG and heart X-ray and final consult with the surgeon and anesthesiologist. I saw the person they had examined just before they saw me and the look on their face's as they walked him out spoke volume's. He was a person that just didn't want to put the effort in.
After they examined me, they told me I was a very fit 58 year old man and how it is so satisfying to help someone like me. I could tell they were thinking of the previous customer as they spoke with lingering frustration still in their voices.
My Brother inlaw stepped on his scale the morning after he retired and it read 15 pounds. He decided he could not convince anyone that he was only fifteen pounds. His scale had gone around and his weight was 315 pounds and he was only 5'6". Three years later he was and still is at age 70 running marathons and no longer needs a C-Pap.
We can all accomplish a great deal with support from others and I am no exception. My arthritis was so bad I was forced out of a job I loved into early retirement. There is little I can do in the athletic department these days, but what I can do keeps me in really good shape and health. (other than the Arthritis) It is very hard work made easier by support from my family and friends.
When I see the support offered by diner patrons to those that need it for whatever reason. Those that need it should consider themselves lucky to be getting it.

Work Stunk Another terrible day! This commission check is one of the lowest I have ever recived. Only bright side is I will be working 6 days a week again now that Dave is gone. But, with all the stuff I have to do for zoining it will make it harder to get done.
Yard Wars. Spent about a hour and a half cutting and dragging out brush before work. Pile in front of the house is around 6 foot long, 6 foot wide and and 5 foot tall. At this rate I will not beable to see the wifes car by the end of the week when I come home.
I am enjoying doing it as odd as it may sound. Now that I have a chances to keep my house I do care what it looks like. Biggest pain to get out are the wild grape vines that are up in the trees. I pulled one out today that was a good 25 feet long!
Smoking Front One of the problems when I am not smoking is I crave for something to eat. With me stop drinking beer I thought I would drop weight. Right now I maybe gaining a tad from the way the belt feels. Any ideas what I can use to cut back onthe craving? I am trying celery and while it helped a lot today I was surprised when I saw a medium stalk has 8 calories.
Thanks for the support on quiting cigarettes, sad thing is I did not start smoking till I was 28.
Lion Hurts me just to think about what you are going through.

Morning guys
havent been in for a bit. I have been watching a lot of baseball with the jays in it so have been coming home to watch baseball. I have most of my Magic card collection in order and haven't played strat o matic in a bit so am thinking about getting back to the bench with the cool weather. Have been doing 48 work weeks lately, it's starting to catch up with me too as I am starting to feel run down.
I have a few freight cars that need building and the weathering of them is just a ongoing thing. Well off to get the morning coffee and straighten up theworkbench before heading to work

i see jerry was in a couple days ago, good to see you around jerry. Has anybody heard from Dennis in Alberta ?

Oh, Hi Zoe. At least your here. I'll have a pot of Marrakesh Express Organic, fair traded, dark roast coffee to keep my R&GV RR mug filled for a while and a couple sour cream glazed donuts to dunk in my coffee. Thank you Ma'am!
Ken, keep strong on quiting both the cigarettes and the beer!!! You will be far healthier for it, expecially being a diabetic. If I was closer by, I would come over and "supervise" your cutting down all those wild grapevines.
Dark, damp, and gloomy here in the Finger Lakes this morning. Current temperature is 60°F with a light drizzle outside. I will be picking my sister up this evening at the Rochester Airport. She is usually in a sour mood when she arrives. One because she is completely worn out and two because she will be recounting all the rotten things all those other people did and how they didn't agree with her every thought and how SHE's always open to everything other people want to believe (as long as it is in 100% agreement with hers), and that kind of thing. I will be glad to get more time back for the things I need to get done.....
Have a great day!
Brent wrote - "can all accomplish a great deal with support from others and I am no exception." This is very true. In a village in Africa in an orphange one of our missionaries reported back to our church that when children are starving and they still have their mother alive and she loves the child by holding it and nurturing the child will many times live longer or even survive through theh ordeal.

Sorry I missed the commation about teh gun ad in MR. I thought when I saw that there would be a lively discussion about it. I really do not get why there is so much negative emotion about. Like it or not guns were a part of the RR. I purchased some used books on the N&W . Guess what - The engineers carried GUNS ! Guess why - to protect themselves from bears, cats and the two legged vermants that walked around AND were more dangerous than the four legged variety. There are many photos sprinkled through out the books I bought that have engineers, formen, workers etc carrying guns. If you are a rivet counter some of the people you model should be carrying guns - what is the big deal ? Just dont get it. If we didnt have guns we would be performing the Nazi salute, maybe still flying the British flag, communist russia or the Jap meatball over the white house.

Good afternoon, It's a beautiful day in the mid-Ohio valley, sunny and warm.
Railroad front - painted a bit of homesote roadbed this morning so ties can be glued down later today. I managed to get a couple of those pesky code 83 rail joiners installed on three more feet of rail. Finally have worked out a bit of a routine for installing joiners from ME. They do a really good job of aligning the joints but are such a pain to install.
Galaxy, having gone through the neck pain issue five years ago with x-rays and and MRI showing deteriorated cartiledge in my neck top five vertibrae, I got into physical therapy and bought a Temperpedic side sleeper pillow. I swear by my almost rock hard pillow and the physical therapy. My first experience with PT was a home run for me. Hope your doctors can come up with something to help with pain relief for you.
Ken, years ago I worked for a three pack a day smoker. We were students at the time and he came to the conclusion that the only way he would ever be able to replace his junker car was to quit smoking. One Friday he said tomorrow is the day I quit. We kind of laughed at him but wished him luck as the other three working for him were all non smokers. Monday he came to work and reported he had quit cold turkey. He said he was craving a cig so bad that he had to do something. He cut a piece of polypropylene laboratory tubing the lenght of a cigarette and proceeded to chew and suck on it for the better part of a month while at work. It helped satisfy his need to have something for his cravings. He came to my wedding a couple of years after he quit and said he had not smoked since quitting but still occassionally craved a cig. I throw out the idea as it might be of some help to you. Good luck on quitting as it will not only improve your health but also be a big aid to the wallet.
Lion, healing thoughts for you.
Howmus, you mentioned issues with getting a plumber and a concrete contractor where you live. I think it must be a nationwide problem. Have been trying to get a concrete contractor to pave my driveway for over three year with no luck. I have a firm quote but the guy never schedules the work. Took me seven years to get my gutters replaced. The contractor kept telling me he would get to it but never showed up until I contracted with a general contractor to do the work. He then showed up and did the job it about two hours. It is frustrating to say the least since I used to be in the contracting business.
Hope everone is having a great week.

Positive mental attitude, gentlemen. Positive mental attitude.
I had rotator cuff surgery in my late 40s. I specifically chose a team of orthopedic surgeons I knew from hockey, because they had a reputation of "getting you back in the game." I got the operation, faithfully did my physical therapy, got back on the bicycle to maintain my aerobic capacity, and I was back in the game in six months.
Last year, the doctor told me I had Type 2 Diabetes. It felt like a death sentence, particularly with the side effect of the medication. I discussed this with him, and he switched my meds and told me I needed a lot of exercise, every day. So, after I retired I was able to get a lot of exercise, every day, and now I've lost weight, gained strength and I feel better than I have in years.
My father-in-law had a hip replacement when he was 85. Why? So he could get back in the game, and yes, he did return to the tennis court. He's 98 now, not playing tennis anymore, but he doesn't need a cane or a walker.
Believe in yourself.
Every joint in my body has arthritis! The older i getthe worse it gets everywhere...
So I am not surprised, I hope he can for my neck what he did for the Carpal tunnels some years ago.
well, hte inspection tunred up some htings in hte 'health and safety' deparment that NEED To be addressed and WILL before we move in. Wasnt surprised over all aobu the rest of the hosue. The inspector siad he'd buy it if he were looking. so that is good news.
well, my neck is killing me.
best rest I still hab a code fromb da flue shot..
Good Afternoon Diners,
Flo, my usual gigante cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.
Just a quick lunch hour "Hello" To everyone.
It has been my observation over many years including a time overseas that one of the major failings Americans (and probably Canadians too) have is that we errantly make the assumption that everyone else in the world thinks the same way we do. They do not!
So, while we may have a hot button issue that invokes heated debate, outside observers may not understand why. And they may see the rhetoric as insensitive or too reactionary because they don't have the full understanding. It also works both ways.
Just throwing it out there for your consideration.
i hope everyone is OK and safe.
Jim (with a nod to Mies Van Der Rohe)
Good Afternoon,
A sunny 13C here today which is above normal for this time of year. We have some of the yardwork done but not all. We need to get it done in the next week before it gets too cold.
Good news here. My wife's uncle just had a 5 by-pass plus valve heart surgery. We were a little worried, no make that a lot, when he didn't wake up for over 24 hours but all seems well now. He is a great guy and we are quite close to him. He is 79 and never stops. He worked as an electrical engineer but after retirement he got a Fine Arts degree, graduating when he was 65. Now is is in grade 7 on piano which is quite an accomplishment.
We still don't have the bathroom reno completed. The taps have yet to be installed plus a few minor things. The holdup is our inability to decide on a backsplash. Frankly I'm not sure I like the look of them. We were going to do a coloured glass sheet but once we got a sample home, we didn't really like it.
Tomorrow we are going to my wife's neice's graduation. She has a degree in computer science and math. She is a very bright girl, 4.0 grade point average plus she is a great kid too.
Well, time to head out on a errand run.
CN Charlie
Hello everybody
just got word we'll receive our closing date within 24 hours. WE will recieve notice of how much $$ to bring to closing... that will come the day of closing in the early A of M.
The inspection showed what i call some serisous "health and safety" issues we'd lke the seller to address BEFORE we take possession. The flue pipe has giant holes for Carbon Monoxinde to be/does leak directly into the house, the furnace has a flexible gas line into it, neeeds to be solid pipe. The sump pump DOESN'T WORK, so stagnant water has built up in it. Over all good, he said he'd buy it if he was in the market and thinks we got a GREAT "steal" of a deal for the house nad the neighborhood, . The whole house will need to be re-graded.
we will see what they will do.
:ater
I still feel bad you know tthye keep sayign that you don't get teh flu formt he shot, only hte symptoms, but I will be sick for 2 weeks now thaat I got it. feel lousy and got maybe 2 hours of sleep lastr night...

The dupster should arrive today! WHoo HOO!
Trian nut frined is coming we will make a 1.5 roudn trip to get some boxes and later throw stuff away!
That is mny plans?
later,
MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!
well,
the 15 yard rolloff is here now. I probably should have gottten a bigger one! The shed is mostly cleaned out, the stuff remianing we will either keep or throw after MOH looks at it, I could throw most of it away as it was mostly my stuff anyway, and all but about 3 small items thrown out.
Have some stuffto launder.. Ther est I threw out as i hadn't used it on 15 years, including some not-so-bad-and-nice silverware, that we really DON'T need!!! Much of my pots nad pans were trash anyway.
so on and so forth.
Trian nut friend, who has elctrrodes implanted in his back he can turn on to tune out pain, hjas a bad back too. We managed quite weel, but about 15% to the top of the 15 yarder is full aleady and I haven't gotten to the porch yet!
I ma taking break trian nut frined has to go move wife from work then will be back.
Mornin' everyone... Uh... Oh. Well in just a couple weeks it will still be morning at this time of day.
Zoe, can I get another pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast please? Yes, Half & Half and Stevia with it too.
Galaxy, amazing what you find when you clean out completely! I found several items that I had long forgotten I had when I took down the steel shed by the side of the house a few weeks back. Interesting that they are requiring black pipe to hook up your furnace. I have a flex pipe going from my main gas line out to the back porch for the hookup to the through the wall heater ion the living room and to the gas heater in the rain room. On thinking about it, there is a section of black pipe that actually is connected to heaters on each of those, but the flex is code for the piping other than that. They may only have to put in a short pipe to the furnace to make it comply. What do they have to do with the grade on the property for you?
I picked up my sister last night at the ariport and found her to be a good mood! She had a great trip and loved the entire time. She was in 4 of the "Stan" countries, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Berserkistan I think..... Brought back some wonderful clothing, plates, wall hangings, and such like she always does. I, of course, had to stick around at her house for a couple hours while she unpacked everything for me to see (I also got smart and plugged in the PiP and headed home with a full charge...). Managed to roll out of bed a few minutes after 9 this morning so was a few minutes late with the kitties insulin shots.
I have finished the basic girders for the bridge. now have to figure out the bracing which will be different from the diagrams I have of the bridges because mine will be curved (Two equal halves, but the inside girders are shorter than the outside girders...). I have to still try to do it in a prototype acceptable manner.
Have a great day out there!
Afternoon Dinners
Flo, I will have a please and I may have to have you help me lift it to my lips!
Please No one (YGW) tell me no beer. I have cut back from 10 a night 7 days a week to one day only. That is pretty darn good. Even my Doctor was fine with that.
Yard Wars I be glad to get back to work so I can get some rest! I pretty muched worked 5 hours of cutting and dragging stuff and I am beat. Of course what I tought was going to be the easy part took 3 times longer that I had planed on, so all is normal. Few years ago the neighbor to my right bulit there own wood fence that you cannot see through. Now the new neighbor's that bought the house thinks the trees that grew bettwen think they are ony my side. But they really are in the No Man Land's. Had to cut out a little of my fence to get to the trees (Some where 10 foot tall) but it sure looks better.
Need to take a photo of the pile in the front yard. This is the biggest pile of stuff I have ever had for pick up, it is a monster. My wife will have puppies when she gets around to seeing it. Main reason for taking a photo is so I can send it to the Zoing Inspector so he knows I am working on it.
I am enjoying doing it as odd as it may sound. I was sick of looking at the mess. (some of you may remember I was working on it last year on my own) Plus it is a pretty good work out, my arms feel like they are made of lead. I just wish zoing was not involved, but it is sure is a push to get it done!
Electrical question? Can a 20 volt battery power tool work with a 18 volt battery (If battery will fit) with out hurting the motor?

Hi Diners,
It's been a boring day today and usually Thursday's aren't always like that.
Don't put Skittles in the fridge, I took one out and they were hard as rocks so I had to suck them.
Train News: I been thing of a small 2'8"x5' with a inner and outer loop. I was thinking of 12-3/4" with 11" curve radius or maybe 13" outer if it'll fit. Probably 2 industries and a town if it fits.
I was thinking of late 1950s thru 1980s. Using only 4 axle diesels 40-60' freight cars.
