Another reason to ....
Posted by yougottawanta on Monday, September 28, 2015 12:45 PM

I know this is a tough subject for some (though I still do not fully grasp the reason why ) but this weekend I found another reason why people should join the NMRA - iT IS FULL of like minded individuals. Several weeks ago I received an email notice about an open house on 3300 sqft N&W MRR in Glen Allen MD. Over an hour and half away from my home. Becuase of the NMRA I was able to meet like minded individuals, pick up some ideas, learn some history on the N&W.....Folks it is worth teh price of admission.

This x 1000!!! Please put content in title so as to not waste our time.  I prefer to not be "baited" into topics which I may not be interested in.

Thank you!

Jim,I just gotta ask..Why even bother to make a reply if you're not interested?

I agree being around like minded folks is a good way to enjoy a hobby.

Oh, and to answer Larry's question, like the others, we are letting thread starters know it's not nice having no hint of whats in the topic.

Back on topic, I've rejoined the NMRA so I could be part of my club. I'm also getting the magazine this time around, most events and stuff are pretty far north and usually on days I work. I'm pretty much paying to run trains, I'm ok with that.

Hmmm - Folks its called a teaser. To get you interested into discussin the subject or checking in. Like the old Batman shows when they would leave the end of the show with Batman or Robin in mortal danger and you couldnt wait to see next week to see how the hero would escape or (oh gasp ) the impossible would happen and he would be killed. Like Larry said if you dont like the thread move on and if you dont then leave a remark about the subject.

Thanks - MOVING ON

I have always wondered about people who claim to be Christians but did not want to attend church - WHAT !??? Let me get this straight if you are one why not spend time around like minded people and learn and grow, otherwise one looks a little cooky, at least to me the SAME THING applies to MRR.

If you are a MRR and want to grow and learn. Why not join an organization that has a plan for further education, fellowship, platform for study, opens one to a wider vision of possiblities etc...Then there is thE Outstanding calender that you can sign up for, the great magazine and the "local" which comes out every so often. You get what you pay for. Little in , little recived, all in much recieved.

I wish more MRR would participate in the NMRA - Heck the doors that this opens to other great modelers is worth the price of admission.

YGW

PS Dave everytime I post something your comments are always negative. If you have something to say negative send me a PM. In fact send me a PM and lets discuss this like gentlemen.

I think the point has been made about the title. As with most criticism, it is usually easier to see the point being made if there are signs it was made in good faith. So now that you're here, why not respond to the OP's interrogative? That might might suggest the critique is something more than sniping and piling on.

YGW,

A little less tease and a bit more info is a valid point. If you want to fish, a baited hook always works better than just a bare hook.

I do have to wander about why a few fish chomp on a bare hook -- and then make a big act out of being disappointed about it?

That said...

I agree with the YGW's experience. You might run into a fellow hobbiest by accident at the LHS. Since those are increasingly few and far between these days, especially in areas without large concentration of model railroaders, the NMRA offers that opportunity many more ways than a LHS visit.

Also, coming soon will be a NMRA program where those willing to entertain layout visitors can enter that into a directory so other members can look that info up, whether at home or if traveling. It will be a fine addition to a wide range of services and relationships that the NMRA uses to build and maintain interest in the hobby.

YGW, I am afraid that you are missing the point.  The replies are nearly unanimous that you should have identified your topic in the title.

Such as, Another reason why people should join the NMRA.

It is much less about opposition to joining the NMRA than it is about feeling snookered.

Don't you get that?

Rich I get that. The intent was NEVER to make people feel snookered. I cannot control there perception. However if tehy feel snookered even though it was not my intent - Please accept my apologies. -

But the method to draw people in to the discussion is a common and accepted practice in the real world to have people look because of they wonder what the subject is about.

Again no snookering attended.

YGW,

No apology is needed IMHO.

Just as a answer in the actual topic, while I appreciate what the NMRA has done, and still does, it is not economical for me right now, nor is there enough incentive in my area.

So, while I appreciate them, I don't feel the need to show that appreciation with a monetary donation without any further benefit from it. I have more important things to pay for currently......

YGW, you catch more flys honey is the old saying.  For what it's worth, most of the time I ignore topics which have hook, or as you call "teaser" titles because the majority of the time, they aren't something that interests me.  As one other mentioned, your title didn't even have bait on the hook.  My wife from England would say you are taking the Mickey out of the forum members with the way you post your thread titles - google it if you want to know what they mean by that.  Reason being you must know a lot of people will feel subtly mocked or annoyed at coming in to find out out there is nothing of interest to them.  (so are you enjoying yourself there?!!?)

If you want people to come in and not be annoyed, IMO it's better to offer what the topic is about, and more likely they will be coming because they are interested, rather than walk away feeling trolled.  Isn't that a more positive thing to be doing? and more forum members won't feel you are toying with them or waisting their time - not really a good thing.  Based on the first bunch of response, it seems many feel as I do.  Just sayin ... /over and out.

Hmmm - Folks its called a teaser...

Actually based on the example you gave it would be called a cliff hanger not a teaser.  A teaser is more like a preview which your title didn't offer.  So your title would fall under baiting.

Whether one is Catholic, Christian, Baptist or whateverist going to church is not necessary and doesn't make one less of a believer than the rest.  Have you seen the people that go to church? A lot are judgemental and hypocrites, why would anyone want to mingle with such people.  The good Lord doesn't care where you worship.

As you were.

With out getting into trouble with the forum rules please let me respond to this statement. This is like saying I will not go to the hospital because it is full of SICK PEOPLE ...What ????? With all due respect one attends places of worship or NMRA meets to better themselves. Of course people in churches have issues - THEY GO TO BETTER themselves, if they didnt need help I guess they could stay home with the rest of the perfect people in the world. I attend NMRA meets to LEARN, To IMPROVE, To better myself. No disrespect intended but I grow so weary of the argument I will not go because there are sick people there. Please...

Now AGAIN I have apologized for the title - Can we please move the discussion to the topic.

C´mon, fellas, splitting the hair for the umpteenth time does not lead anywhere. You have made your point clear, and YGW will certainly do better in his future threads.

That said - back on topic. For a lot of people, the social aspect of our hobby is also quite important. Meeting folks who share one´s own interest is always a bonus and as most people don´t advertise their interest, joining an association, a club or even a forum is a way to get to know your neighbor.

I am with you on this, YGW, although I am not a member of any club or the NMRA. But being a regular contributor to a special Swiss model railroading forum I found out that a chap living 5 miles away from me is doing the same thing as I do - building a Rhaetian Railway themed layout. We already have met once and it was a pleasure. I am sure that was not for the last time!

Maybe the NMRA is great in your neck of the woods, not mine and in some areas is is downright bad, know one individual that cannot join the group he is closest to because geographicaly he is in another area and must join there!

Ulrich, my point was to encourage YGW to start the thread over with a meaningful title in order to get the attention of those interested in NMRA membership and those who are undecided about NMRA membership.

I was going to join the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum which is listed on the nmra.org site - but appears to not to be run directly by the NMRA.

Anyhoo, they have a policy of having to help run the museum (which I have no problem with) however, its about 1.5 hours away from my home - so every weekday I have to help out means taking a day off work to do it.

I don't mind the contributions and helping out weekends but it just seems weird that this is a pre-condition to membership. My apologies if this has nothing to do with the NMRA but it is listed on nmra.org.

Well, since a lot of you wasted your time replying to a thread why didn't you just go away and do something useful instead of this little P & M dance that did nothing but (as I said) waste your time and that of the folks that actually contributed to this thread.

I try to learn at least a little from reading these threads.

Tried to Google P&M dance but came up blank.
