C´mon, fellas, splitting the hair for the umpteenth time does not lead anywhere. You have made your point clear, and YGW will certainly do better in his future threads. That said - back on topic. For a lot of people, the social aspect of our hobby is also quite important. Meeting folks who share one´s own interest is always a bonus and as most people don´t advertise their interest, joining an association, a club or even a forum is a way to get to know your neighbor. I am with you on this, YGW, although I am not a member of any club or the NMRA. But being a regular contributor to a special Swiss model railroading forum I found out that a chap living 5 miles away from me is doing the same thing as I do - building a Rhaetian Railway themed layout. We already have met once and it was a pleasure. I am sure that was not for the last time!
