KEN: The support is free nad in abundance here. What you do with it is up to you.
Just because you dont have the shakes or craving now DOESN'T exactly mean you are not an alcoholic! BUT, ONLY YOU can decide if you are one.
Next, sleep will liekly be interrupted as your body is used to sleep perhaps induced by alchohol, and relaxed enough to sleep. SO you might have some fitful nights coming that are rough.
See my post earlier on insomnia. i slept a whole 3 hours last night, once at 8pm for 1.5 hours, and once at 6:30 Am for a "nap" .
well, I'd best get my butt in gear I am not the only one who needs new glasses! Seeing hte eye dr. htis mornign!

Galaxy - Happy Bd again.
Cn Charlie - How was teh train show ?
John Boy - I am doing MUCH better. They shocked my heart back into rythm and I feel great- thanks for caring and asking : )
Howmus - Funny picture with the animals and GALAXY made me laugh out loud - sorry Galaxy but it was funny. What in teh world is your sister llike if she is creating international incidents is just a few short days ?
Ulrich - My ggod ole buiddy best friend Gotta any apple pie left to share I LOVE a good apple pie ! - I love your new train - Very nice !!!
Ken - I am so glad you are given up those items. I have lost three people to cancer from smoking and the associated breathing problems- really bad way to go. I do a math excercise with youg guys about the cost of smoking. Here the cigs are about $5 a pack. I ask them how they smoke a week, there age, the cost of their brand and then I do the math up to age 65. I tell them the cost which is usually 5 to 6 digits over a life span and then I add in $1mill. for the cost of cancer treatment. That habit will cost about 1.6million to the average person in their early 30s with teh current cost of cigs and later medical treatments of course prices go up. I did the math and quit some time ago. - Dryrot - Dryrot may be used for several items. Generally dryrot is slang here for wood that has been exposed to water on and off and but is generally dry. It develops Rot and crumbles to teh touch. It can also if old enough just "rot" even though it has not been exposed to lots of water. Either way it has to be replace and if structural can be an expensive fix. PCM - Oh I didnt know that.
This weekend drove to Glen Allen Md ( 1.5 hours away ) to see a 3300sqft N&W layout. It was incredible. Lucky thing drove all the way there and back. Then drove with my wife to a place 20 minutes away and the brakes went out on teh car ! Phew close call. Made for some tense driving on the return trip home. But we said a prayer and teh good lord saw us home

Sir Madog. . .I tried something new today. Well, not really new, but for the first time after my stroke. I tried to solder a feeder wire to a length of track and, although it took a long time, I managed to get that done - with the help of a "third hand" and a small clamp to hold the wire against the track. . .
Congratulations on the small victory!
Richard
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I would like a bowl of Heritage Flakes Organic Cereal (bring over the packets of Stevia) and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee for my R&GV RR Mug please (and thank you!).
Ulrich, congrats on the solder job! I think over time you will find many ways you can still get the jobs done even with your handicappes. Running Bear did.... So can you!
I'm taking a short break from the days nessessary activities to stop by for a bit. Already made a run down to the post office to mail out the newsletters. After a quick lkunch I have to head to Canandaigua to take care of the cats around my sister's place. By this evening I expect to have the 20 gal aquarium empty and cleaned. I am supposed to be hosting a party for a bunch of old retired Fine and Practicle Arts teachers here in a few weeks so I will have to stay on schedule somehow to get the house at least passable (read not too offensive to others...).
Catch you all later!

We'll get there sooner or later!
ULRICH, Way to go, we knew you could do that. Just keep trying all those things that were so familiar to you.
By small steps many miles are travelled. And by practise those things which were so familiar to you will become so again. It will take time, but I do think that is one thing that you have lots of.
I'm proud of you for trying and succeding. I am smiling.

The post-hernia-surgery recovery continues. Last night was my first normal night's sleep. I am figuring I will still doze off a couple times today as I am still a little on sleep-deprived side from the past week. The pain is mostly gone--just a little tenderness and discomfort. I am continuing on the Advil regime for one more day, allbeit at a lower dosage. I have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon on Thursday.
Not sure what is going on with the heat in these parts. It looked like the triple digits were gone earlier this month, but now we are looking at highs over 100 for the week. It is always a little discouraging when it is 100 degrees in October.
Richard - 100 degrees in October !! Oh my. Its in the 60s and 70s here. Send me a bottle with a cap and I will hook up my ole air compressor, fill the bottle, put a cap on it and send it Fed xpress !!! Hope you feel better soon.
Ulrich - congrats on soldering ! I am so impressed with you. Having just a little heart trouble and being worn out at the end of the day, I cannot imagine having a stroke and tehn trying to take enything on- my hats are off to you.

Good evening diners. I have missed all of you for the past week and a half as my computer absolutely quit connecting to the net. Finally received help from a friend who used to work in IT who determined that Google Chrome was so corrupted in my registery it could not be restored. He tried to uninstall and reinstall without success. So we switched to Firefox.
Sorry to hear that some of you have been having trouble with Firefox and videos.
Ken, encouragement for stopping smoking and consuming the daily beers. The cost factor certainly has to be a motivator but the health benefits are much more important.
Johnboy and CN Charlie, its getting chilly further north. Yesterday I went fishing with some people from N. Dakota and about 3 PM a squall came up, blew like mad, rained buckets for about two minutes and the temperature dropped at least 10 degrees C. Very cool here today. Will probably finally have a hard frost. The trees have been beautiful this past week but the storm yesterday blew off a lot of leaves.
Friends finished up wild rice harvesting this past week with the second best harvest in over ten years. I enjoyed camping at their camp for the last month. Very sirene location with no TV, phone, electricity or plumbing. Very much a roughing it experience.
Hope everyone is having a good start to the last week in September.
Jim
well, another night, another day done gone by.
We got some extra docs to sign from the finance company, mailed back off. Got the lot rent mailed off.
SO we are Ok there.
we did go "shopping" nad drooled over a few peices, but mostly not so satisfied with selection. for a couch, they tend to be deep and squichy, for me i need firm and not deep, so I can get up out of the darn thing!!
Ulrich: good job! You will figure thingsout a way to do htings now, WHen I first began uing the cane, I had to figure out ways to do things one-handedly! {as one carried hte cane!} Easy as time goes by.
See you all later..
have a great nights rest, evn if I don't!
John boy!!!
GOod to see you! Always!
Ulrich: liek he adapted ot missing a MAJOR things we all do, eating, you willl adapt too!!
Evenin' folks!
Janie, I could use a refill for my decaf please....
Got quite a lot of odds and ends done today. Mailed the newsletters, cam back home and topped of the car battery during lunch, then headed to Canandaigua to take care of the kitties. Got the heavy duty extension cord plugged in at my sister's house. Since she doesn't have any outside recepticles, a couple years ago I out in a short heavy duty cord with a three way plug on it down cellar in her house. This goes out an old (and never used dryer vent) so she and I can plug things in when needed. The recepticle inside doesn't make good ground contact on the upper outlet, so after fidling around trying to get the ground fault cured on the EVSE (charging cord), i went down cellar to find she had again unplugged the cord and replugged it into the top plug..... Fed the cats, cleaned the litter boxes, and sat around for an hour and a half while the car finished charging. Did get 275 mpg though on the way home.
20 gal. aquarium is now empty and awaits a good scrubbing. All the filtering and heater equipment is on the counter at the sink waiting its turn for cleaning as well. I hope by tomorrow night it will be cleaned and moved into the living room awaiting being re-set up.
I'm about ready to head out to bed for the night. I'm tired.... So, I hope all of you have a restful night.
Evening Dinners
Flo, I take a Lemonade Please.
Work Front Another slooooow day, only 2 customers? But, it was a good day anyway! Had a couple in there 70's come in wanting a firm mattress because she has back problems. Normally when folks are that old it not worth wasting my breath about how a frim mattress is not good for there back. Gave it a try anyway and I was surprised she was open to try memory foam. Long story short, they bought a Memory with Cooling Gel. Sure made up for this weekend, made $130.00 extra today and I sure need it.
galaxyJust because you dont have the shakes or craving now DOESN'T exactly mean you are not an alcoholic!
Then what does make a person Alcoholic Galaxy? I am sitting at my desk tonight playing on the computer and not craving a . I have beer sitting in the cooler (no ice) and cold beer in the house yet I am not drinking one, just lemonade. So I would have to say and I am suprised to say it, I must not be a alcoholic.
Smoking on the other hand, that is going to be a harder nut to crack.
YGW Did you get your daughter a new mattress and if so, does she like it? As far as BLI PCM engines I only have 2. The N&W Y6b which I swear by and there UP Big Boy that I swear at! I have had 2 Athearn Big Boys that where junk and I got a refund on. Then the PCM, while it is by farther better engine, but it is a pain in the butt and have not messed with it for a year!
Ulrich Hope you keep getting better. I use the 3rd hand when I install decoders. Other wise I would have gave up a long time ago.
Speaking of new glasses. I tried to wear my new one's the VA sent me a few weeks back. Boy something is not right with the biefocal (spell check) part. I use the biefocal to use the computer, well unless I get my face with in 8 inch they are use less. Using the old ones for now.
See you all latter, Ken

Galaxy, try Flexsteel furniture. They have it at Olum's. They're probably a little more than what you saw at R&F, but it's stiffer and it's actually American made.
Cancer killed 3/4 of my grandparents, an aunt, and my mom, along with many of my great-aunts and great-uncles. Most of them smoked. Congrats to everyone who's given up the coffin nails, but the damage may already be done, unfortunately. For example, Mom had quit smoking back in the '80s, but she still developed lung cancer a few months after her sister died of it. Not trying to scare anyone or make enemies, but you need to know that quitting, while vital, may not prevent you from a bout with cancer in the future.
Mr. Sunshine will now take his leave.
well, GM, MEN!
Today's word:
AS uncle bob says..it will and here for the next 7days. 3-3 1/2" today alone. We have been bone dry for 1/2 amonth so it coudl get nasty again if runnoff doesn't soak in.
Ken: I won't get into a discussion wiht you as I said. Send me a PM if you'd like. But basically if you htink it needs examining....Not picking at you , being helpful...
Well, the rain will come and I need ot grocery shop. Lots of rain. Hopefully NO flooding, please!
food shoping is such a chore...
later all
Lunchtime!
Zoe, I´ll go for a Barry-sized burger with all the works, but hold the onions! Add a big RBF to it, please!
Those of you suffering from ra*n - I´d send you some of the sunshine we are enjoying right now. It´s a really beautiful Fall day and I will go for a walk soon.
I think I will simplify the layout a little bit - just getting rid of the tunnel and make it a cut instead. It´s a lot easier for me to handle and the visual impact on the overall appearance of the layout is rather small. I also save a considerable amount of money, as those typical Rhaetian Railway tunnel portals are really $$!
But see for yourself:
Ken - hang on, pal - I know you´ll make it! Just don´t think about smoking and drinking and put your thoughts on something nice - a new loco, maybe?
Have a great one, Ffolkes!
Cudaken,
It's one day at a time.....for the rest of Your life....smoking or drinking.....total days don't really need to be counted...only the beginning.

Btw: Ulrich....glad You took the first step...that's the most important part of most anything in life...no matter how many times You fail or fall...You continue to get up, brush Yourself off and try again.....
Frank - how right you are! There was a time, when I had given up, but thanks to the many gentle pushes I have received from some fine folks in here and other places, I am back to enjoying my life again. I have now something to look forward to, even if it is a long, winding and rocky road to there.
Ken - I don´t want to appear patronizing, but people who are frequent and regular consumers of alcoholic beverages often deny having a problem with alcohol. Habitual drinking is a form of alcoholism.
Again, I am sure you´ll make it! Think of all the wonderful things you can buy from the money you save!
- I got TOPS! Flo, here is my CC - put everything the lads will have on my tab!
Edit:
I still have that old town gate from my now gone layout "Schietwedderooge". I thought it would make a nice castle of some sort on my new layout - it could easily be turned into castle keep, the only remaining part of an old castle, now used as a tourist look-out. I took some time to draw the tower and incorporated it into my plan:
What do you think? Should I go for it?
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with raisons and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee this morning. What? how about you bring me my FGLK Mug for a change...
Ulrich! Go for it! Looking forward to seeing your progress.
We are under a Flood Watch here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS today. Possiblility of between 2 and 4" of precipitation. It is, as Barry would say, "Dull" out there. I won't beat last years total for electric generation this month. It will be about 30kWh short. Even so, with the new insulation in the living room and all the air leaks stopped, I have used less electric so my bill will actually be down from last year.... I need to get working on the 20 gal aquarium so I best get moving.

YGW: Thanks for asking. Today marks one week from the surgery and I have mostly bounced back. I miss riding the bike, but I have replaced it with evening walks with Mrs. ROR, not a bad thing. Last night we walked three miles with no ill effects. I have been sleeping through the night, with the usual exception of the old-man bathroom break. I am still on limited lifting, no more than 15 lbs. I have my post-op visit with the surgeon on Thursday and will get a better idea when I can get back to full activity. I am traveling to Southern California next week and hope I will be able to put my luggage in the overhead baggage container.
Boy, I could use a beer. Been a drama full day because of my daughter. But, I am sipping Lemonade and glad she is home all right.

(Walks in and finds only one light on....) Hello? Hello! Hmmmm.... Guess the joint is closed, but the door is open. Oh! Hi Janie! What? Your saving electricity since nobody has been in for the last 10 hours? Wonder where everyone is? I could use a cup of decaf, please. Oh, I'll wait untill you make some. Can I turn on a couple lights if I leave a big tip?
Been another busy day here in the finger lakes Region of NYS. I went to my sisters house, took care of the kitties, watered here plants, and sat and read an old issue of Smithsonian I brought with me. Once the PiP had about a 99% charge I headed out to the NAPA store in Newark, NY... Why? I needed to get a couple Adult applications for the troop I am commissoner for signed so I can turn them in at the District Copmmittee meeting tomorrow night. I called before I left home and I was told the owner (whom I needed to get the signature from) would be back in the afternoon. He wasn't! I left them for him to sign and I will pick them up tomorrow after my trip to Canandaigua to feed the Cats. Only 16 miles out of my way....
The 20 gal aquarium is now cleaned and ready to be moved into the living room tomorrow morning.
YGW, thanks... You reminded me of something I do want to do before snow flies. They sell some foam inserts for the plugs on the outer walls... Those were taken out when the renovation took place. I'll pick some up and get them put back in. I do have back-up through the wall gas heat out there, but this winter I may not need to have it running except as an emergency unit if the change in the air conditioning out there is any reference. Might be all of 1° warmer out there than the main part of the house. Used to be around 5° or so before. There will still be plenty of new air infiltration that I won't worry about stale air... The basement has lots of air going in and out and the furnace has a vent for basement air to be circulated into the rest of the house.
Just about time for me to turn in for the night. Have a restful evening folks!
GM, MEN!
Well, Its another morning. Didn't sleep much last night...again.
Then the cable was out, had to reset everything, and had ot wiat on the phone for 30 minutes, nad inthe meantime the cable came back u, online hapened, etc while waiting..natually.
SO, i am back!

Good Afternoon!
What a day! On the pleasant side - the wether continues to be nice nd my friend Claus gave me his old Sony Handycam as a gift! It´s not really old, less than year, but he got a new, more complex one, so he thought it would make a nice gift to me - how nice of him!
On the not so pleasnt side, the camcorder requires some software which you can download for free from the Sony web site, but it is not compatible with WindowsXP I am not sure whether I can install Windows7 on my notebook - it has a 1GB RAM 32bit and 512GB hard disc. It should work, but again I am not sure whether it actually does. Can anyone help me?
Today´s the last day of September - only 3 months to go until 2016! It´s been a rather slow month here in the Diner - I do hope some of those longtime MIA´s show up next month!
Have a good one!
"It's a rainy, rainy, day... Just a rainy, rainy, day...." Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning. Over easy on the eggs, couple sausage links, home fries, and a double order of that wonderfull sourdough toast you have here. A large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Organic Coffee is a must this morning!
Currently 57°F outside door here in the Finger Lakes which is about what the high will be today... The house is 71°F inside so I am comfortable for the moment. Haven't kicked the thermostat over to heat either. Probably will before bed tonight as the low will be 43°F.... Fall has arrived with a vengence. I do hope the Kerosine stoves will be working on the cabooses this weekend. I will turn on the heat at my sisters house today when I visit.
Ulrich, how nice to have been given the video camera... Too bad you will have to update the laptop to be able to run it. I can't help you on that one being an Applehead.....
G, hows the water level down your way? We have only gotten about an inch up here from this storm system. The map was showing some nasty looking stuff down your way last night.
I best get going. Have a lot I need to do today, and sitting at the computer doesn't get it done! Catch you all later!

Ulrich - Claus seems to be a really nice guy.
Galaxy - That is a very interesting word. Moil. I have been Moiling a very long time. Or how about I have been Moiling on the RR all the live long day
Ken - That is a great step. In adversity not given in to temptation - Congrats
Richard will say a prayer for Thursdays saw bones visit
Howmus - a bit of air infiltration is good. I think the current some of the new codes will be making people so sick because the houses are so tight that the off gasses cannot escape and peopel will be developing strange health issues directly caused by their houses.
Well no news on the MRR front. Whats all of the bandages from ? Oh I took a trip out into the forum and got eaten up on all fronts not about the subject by the title. YGW: You mean you aren't installing air/heat/a/c-exchangers? You know it draws fresh air in and heats/cools it, then expunges "bad/dirty air"? It IS SPECIFICALLY designed to change out the stale air without losing heat or a/c temps in these new air-tight houses!
There is flooding around your area I see we may have some here too. Hope you personally don't get washed away! That canoe might come in handy! I DO hope you guys have insurance onhte building of it or the new homowners do!
We ALL on the east coast can now expect more rain as Joaquin just officially became a hurricane!
RAY: we got only enough we can handle. BUT if Joaquin comes along, all bets are off! If it happens we will be without power for at least 5 days...you know hte drill! We will also try to get over to the "new house" with the agent to nose around and see if the dry basement is still so dry!jsut cause it has a sump pump that appears not to be needed?
