Mornin' folks and a happy July 4th. to those of you Stateside.
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Heritage Flakes cereal and a pot of Seneca Lake Dark Roast coffee for my "Dispair.com" The Cup is Now Half Empty ® mug.
Lots of BOOM, BOOMs and Pop, poping going on around here last night..... Huh? No, no, I live amongst the Middle Class here in Geneva. It was the City putting on a major Fireworks display down by the lake after a major Concert celebrating the Holiday. I think tonight will be the same but put on by the VFW in town.
I shall be spending the day cleaning house and hopefully doing some weeding out in the gardens. My son and his family should be getting home tonight. I hope they drive safely!
Yesterday as I was driving back from camp, right by the old Seneca Army Dept property, as deer jumped the ditch and landed in the road directly infront of my car. There were two cars coming towards me on the other side of the two lane highway. The deer just stood there and looked at me as if saying "OH SHHHHHHHH....". I found out just how good the brakes are in the PiP! I stopped about 10 foot from the deer who was still looking at me. She then ran across the road on front of the two cars coming the other way. Luckily they had both slowed to a crawl and didn't hit her either... Lucky day for the Doe! All the trimming equipment in the back (seats are always down in the back) came flying up to the front though....
Have a great and SAFE 4th. of July!

We'll get there sooner or later!
No rain here, but we expect a series of thunderboomers passing through our neck of the woods during the night.
Temperature exceeded the 100F-mark a couple of hours ago - the hottest day ever! Inside our apartment, we have an uncomfortable 81F, which will not go down much during the night .
Ulrich: i have been seeing that part pf Europe haas been having 100{+} degree weather a LOT this summer.
Here it is barely 65f, soggy and overcast today. June here was the 5th wettest month on record! And the flooding in places like Texas would never end. So many people washed out, flooded out, etc. Even in DC area... Water everwhere but california or out the western 1/3 of the US, a lot of which is on fire right now and in the 100'sF too... weather not cooperataing with anything here so much it would seem. I HOPE its not a forecast of the winter snows...we had enough last year!
ah well...
we will see if the fireworks get rained out today...
watching a movie wiht Juia Roberts and Hugh Grant...only thing worth wathcing on TV now. Missed the name of it.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
The first thunderstorm just passed over us. I have never seen that much ra*n coming down. Visibility was down to maybe 50ft. It has cooled off, only a little though. Still too hot for me. We have opened all the windows to let the hot air out, but will have to close them again any minute, as the next thunderstorm is approaching.
Galaxy - northern Germany is usually a lot cooler. Temperatures in the upper 70´s are considered "hot".
Happy holiday to you guys south of the border. Not much going on here. A beautiful day out and looks to continue for at least the next few days. We had a lot of rain here last week so nice to see the sun out.
Evening Dinners
Flo, a and big fire cracker please.
Work was slow, but still a good day for me! Only had 2 real customers today, only 1 bought but is was a high profit memory foam. That deal made me $160.00 in spiff's.
YGW Reason I think I maybe be able to save my store is because it is lossing money in sales. Biggest reason is Marv will not tell us what the lowest prices we can sale for?
When I worked at Mattress Giant (and made good money) we all knew if the tag prices was $2000.00 we could sale the set for $1000.00. It was that way across the board. As sales people, we did not want to sale at 50% off but we knew we could.
At this company I know I can go 20% off the tag prices. Anything lower we have to call for aprovel. (spell check) and we are told what % we are at and if we could or could not make the deal.\
What the % means.
10% is full tag and we make 10% comission. No call needed.
8% is 20% off and we make 8% comission. No call needed.
I have had a lot of deals where I was told it was a 6% deal and it was OK. They where 25 to 27 percent off. But how low can we go?
This week we where told to ask people to make offers. Any thing over cost would be OK'ed. Hum, made a deal that the % was zero, and it was OK'ed by Kramon (Paul the GM was off) and I wrote it up. Called Kramon (He has the real cost) and asked if Marv made money, answer was yes with a 40% Margin for the company, but I made nothing. (little more to it than that but to complex to explain).
Our West County Store is really the only store that makes a profit monthly. All I hear is Tom sale's are below Margin and complaining about it! Yet, he sales more stuff and is making more profit for the company?
So YGW, that is why I hope I can save my store. I am going to stop doing the company way, and start doing it Tom's way! If I make a profit for the store Marv will not sale it!
Later, Ken

Ken good luck with that project. The rusty steam engine breaks my heart.

well, the fouth is almost over. Saw only Macy's fireworks on TV, and some of the "capitol fourth" on PBS.
AMERICA, Old Girl!
No Boston Pops fireworks on TV? maybe I no longer have that channel? {we dropped a LOT of cable channels to reduce the cabel costs.}
Watching Marcus Lemonis work his magic at saving/growing businesses on CNBC. I like him, wish I had a business for him to save! Wish I could get him to help me START a business, as I have an idea for one....only haave no $$ to start it, probably would fail like 68% of all new businesses do anyway.Dunno. Every tine I have an idea, though, someone comes up and DOES it who HAS the money or cna get it. THIS idea no one has 'stolen' yet, though...
well, I took long nap after dinner to be awake now for the fireworks on TV. Not into fireworks so much now, htough, I've seen enough in my lifetime I guess.
There is a wonderful vast firework display here in the local area, bUT it has only 2 roads into it, and people form at least 3 counties if not more come to converge on it, it is a large park with all kinds of vendors/food there for a great party, but man is it a hassle. Used to live near it and it could watch from my own yard, then the trees got to tall. so i and walked up. Then walking became dangerous, too{cars erratically}}. Then I found a place some distance away {a parking lot} where there was a GREAT view, but it went the same way of the roads too. Trees there probably got too big, too.
so, have a restful night, guys, hope those who imbibed had a safe ride home and are sleeping it off well.....
see ya tomorrow
Morning, Folks!
The night was terrible! I did not catch much sleep - the heat and our noisy neighbors keeping me awake. Now I am all beat.
Today, we will visit the Pressnitztalbahn, a steam line in Saxony. It was closed in the early 1980´s, but resurrected by a group of volunteers. Work began immediately after the wall came down. Much of the original equipment had been preserved and put back into working order. We now can enjoy backwoods railroading in the style of the 1920´s!
Here is the video:
The locos shown are articulated 0-4-4-0 narrow gauge tank engines built in the 1890´s. They are not Mallets, both trucks swivel and the cylinders are facing each other - quite an unusual sight!
Enjoy!
Good morning, everybody !
I'll have coffee and a doughnut please.
Ulrich ... Hope you can catch up on lost sleep. Thanks for the video.
Happy model railroading.

Depends on your state. The Cherie bomb was the biggest in some jursdictions, the Ashcan in others. Bigger ones were always available, but only in states where fireworks were illegal to sell, since there they were not restricted by law. In states with legal fireworks, they would sell what was legal and nobody would bother looking for the biggers stuff.
Now in Pensylvania it is legal to sell fireworks including sky rockets, but it is not legal to use sky rockets in Pennsylvania. Ergo, if you wanted to even enter the booth or tent where the sky rockets were displayed you had to have an out of state ID card, and they photocopied it, and the attached it to their records to account for sky rockets not in inventory. Never mind that they were also illegal in NY, NJ and CT, that was not Pensylvania's worry.

Tried to catch some of the sleep I missed last night, but our dear neighbors wouldn´t let me. How can one be so noisy?
The following video is for our feline friend LION. It shows a cab ride on the Hamburg subway. Hope you like it, Brother Elias!
Cherry Bombs were not the biggest by far.....M-80 Gopher killers, Silver Salutes, were at least twice as loud and deadlier. I got mine from a Ohio farmer who drove a truck for us M-80's for six dollars a gross. 3,4 and 5 inch mortar's, explode a 150ft off the ground, tremendously loud.....You just live in the wrong state. LOL
Our Animals stay in the air-conditioned basement the whole time...It's their hearing that frightens them, more so then ours. My Black lab would lay right by my feet, but He was trained for shot gun noise.
Fire works are illegal in Illinois for year's....but You would never think that on the 4th of July.
Take Care!
Frank
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, just a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee and a couple Buttercreme filled doughnuts please.
T'weren't any Boom, Booms around the neighborhood here (that I heard anyway. Of course I'm Deaf!). Did see some of the large sparkler displays that are now legal in NYS. Interesting that in all the Rochester News Channels there was a bit about please be careful with the fireworks and do know that people suffering from PTSD can be very badly affected by stuff exploding in their neighborhoods...... (Like no kidding!)
I managed to get a lot of odds and ends done around here yesterday since I wasn't at any family events and the big fireworks display here was out at the lake on Friday evening. I don't go to that anyway as often I can see it sitting right here on my porch... Couldn't this time. I think they moved it farther down the lake. Heard it though.
Today I will starting to take down my old firewood rack on the side porch. My son, will be taking it for his use. At least one of his old racks has some severe rot at the bottom, meaning it will sit at the end of his driveway for 4 or 5 years before he decide to do something about it..... I am going to tell him to pick a day and I will come over and we can deal with some of the crap sitting around his house. He is a complete slob! My other son is the direct opposite and is a neatnik of the highest magnitude. takes after his Mom. I'm somewhere in between....
I best get moving... Catch you all later!
Hmm, nearly noon, so I guess "Good Noontide"
Today's word:
In Va. just about everything is illegal. Many go out of state and bring back "illegal" fireworks. One town near where I live in essence told teh police force we are shooting off "illegal" fireworks sos what are you gonna do ? Arrest everyone in town ? The police left them alone.
Evening Diners,
I watched the fireworks yesterday and fireworks again on the 3rd when the casino was doing them.
It's been cloudy mostly all day.
Maybe something will happen later today or tomorrow.

Well, I was late this morning cause I went to the grocery store. I spent $150 for the two of us and I wonder: what did I REALLY GET for that $150???
Eggs: $3/dozen now {doubled since the bird flu stuff} for instance. And regular {the cheap one at that} hamburg? a 1.13 lb package nearly $7??? {I know due to the holiday and BBQ-ing}. FOr that I can amost buy a whole cow!!! COrn cobs {5/$1} and strawberries {Californy ones!!!} 2 pks for $3.49 was about the cheapest things. I skipped some htings on my list or on sale there as $150 was all I had to spend...that actually has to last now at least 2.5 weeks. Hmm, NOT being political just griping.
Farmers here have lost some 'early crops' due ot the rain, I was just questioning that the other day. Then the news does the story! Strawberries and early tomatoes apparently fizzled due to rain. Corn depends on the soil: gravely grows great, clay-ish, no go.
well, lets see, it did brighten up today and got to 85F on the porch...meaning aroudn 80-ish here, 75F now on TV news. I am now wondering aobuthte window 12,500BTU A/C. Usuallyit has no trouble binging it down to 65 whne 80F outside. Today it only borught down to 69....it is some years old..was nealry $400 then...I hope it doesn't cr ap out too, I am still trying to figure out how to pay for a new furnace!!! we are on austerity budget already..thas why i was complianing about food costs....it is now about $150/week for us. that is too much, just too much...2 years ago $50/week would do it. I think we start skipping meals....
well, as I lament, have a great nights sleep, I am hoping for one too!
Flo, Beer Please
Work was sure easy! Got my inventory done and read 100 pages of a Jack Reacher Novel. In other words, I had not a one customer today!
Yard Wars I had not cut the back grass for 3 weeks to a month. With working 6 days a week, all the rain on my 1 day off and going to the VA Hospital just did not have time. Cut half of it this morning before work and it was tuff going! Grass was still wet with dew and clogged up the mower every past. This evening the second half was a lot easier.
Clearing the Back Yard. Cut down some of the small / medium sizes trees a long the fence line. Some of them had got to be 4 inch across. I have a pile 8 feet long, 5 foot tall and 9 feet wide laying by the street. All so cut up the rest of the old fence I cut down last Monday. It is in the trunk of my car heading to the dumpster at work Monday.
YGW Have a few questions
1 Some of my fence post still seem some what soild, but I can see where bugs are eating away at them. Is there anything I can spary the post with to kill any bugs that are living / eating them? I know, I need new post but money is short.
2 Who would I call to find out the frost line in my area? My zip is 62062 if you happen to know.
3 What happens if the post are not below the frost line? They pop out of the ground?
4 Best places to buy lumber?
5 Cheapest paint that holds up well for a fence. I will use treated wood.
6 Sure there no such thing, but my hand best way to dig out old concret and fence post?
Latter, Ken
By the way YGW, be glad the steam engines where not made into Razor blades.
Sir MadogThe following video is for our feline friend LION. It shows a cab ride on the Hamburg subway. Hope you like it, Brother Elias!
Nice, not that I can understand a word of German, fortunately, LION is familiar with Hamburger Bahn... him has book from what appears to be the '70s, History, etc. Also in German, but with many picktures.
Evenin' folks!
Janie, a cup of decaf would suit me just fine at the moment....
Went over to my son's house for a picnic dinner tonight. My DIL's Father and his new wife had blown in from Arizona for a visit. They got together during the family trip on vacation near DC last week and then drove up here for a few days. It was good to see them again.
I have the old firewood rack on the back porch about 2/3rds disassembled. It will end up over at my son's house to store his firewood. A couple of the smaller racks he has been using are rotting out and I don't need mine anymore, so..... Mine will hold about 6 face cord of wood. I also did some moving of a few items, fixed the bathroom fan, and spent some time looking at Roku equiped TV's on-line. I will likely take a trip to the nearest "Best Buy" (Victor, NY) to be able to actually look at and ask questions about what I might want.....
Oh!!! The big news around here tonight (Yawn....) is that David Sweat is now being incarcerated at Five Points on the old Seneca Army Depot property in Romulus, NY. Moved there today from the Albany Hospital. Five Points is about 10 miles due South of my Son's House in Waterloo. The news people have been crawling all over the area trying to find people that are upset that he is there..... (Yawn....) Complete consensus is, He ain't gonna leave that place alive! Five Points is a very new, Maximum Security prison that is way above the old one he broke out of. He ain't gonna like it there is what the talk on the street is here! Twenty-three hours a day in his cell and one hour a day in the yard under close security!
Catch you all in the morning!
Cudaken
Treat the wood with Cupernol, will preserve it, and kill any residual insects. Rent a electric jack hammer, and use that to break up the cement in the ground, easier than digging and using a big hammer.
I use a solid latex stain for all of my outside coverage--house, garage, deck, fence, Woodsman Stain, Tru-Value Hardware. I apply it with an airless sprayer.
If you apply over damp wood, when the wood dries it will suck the paint into the fiber, and last much longer. When I did the house and garage I wet down the section I was spraying about 1/2 hour before painting. I will have to it again this year, but it has been 20 years since last done. I could get another year or so out of the coverage, but time is not on my side, so will do it this summer.

Good Morning!
It cooled off during the night and our neigbors were a little less noisy, so I caight a tad more sleep than in the previous nights.
On our today´s tour, we stay in Saxony. We board a train in the sleepy town of Zittau, taking us into the Zittau mountains. Quite a nice ride in a pleasant surrounding.

Morning guys
just getting ready to head to work. Suppose to be a hot one out today too.
Good Morning Diners,
Flo, I'll have a humongous cup of coffee with a quart of cream, please.
Had a very nice 4th. Saw fireworks at local park Sat nite. Yesterday got together with friends from church for a cookout.
The Fourth of July was always my favorite holiday as a kid. We'd go to my grandparents farm, and my cousins and I would each have about a thousand firecrackers. No ant hill in the county was safe. We weren't really that malicious, but we'd Set a couple off at the ant hill entrance and watch the ants frantically scurrying about. These were red ants and if they bit you it would sting rather badly. I know firsthand.
Then at night the adults would come out and sit outside and we'd provide the fireworks show. Good times.
Gotta go to work.
i hope everyone is OK and safe.
Jim (with a nod to Mies Van Der Rohe)
Good Morning All!
I had a wonderful day railfaning yesterday from the comforts of my front porch and seen around 15 trains..The best thing about this type of railfaning you don't need to find a place to buy snacks or find a restroom. My next "front porch" railfan adventure will be a all nighter.
My plans for today is to add Hayes wheel stops to my industrial sidings, finish the SSRy Employee parking lot by the general office and maybe railfan this evening..
I shall have a cup or two and look over da forum.
Have a good'un!
