Whistling

Evening Gang,

Chloe are you still working, Oh, I see, well before you leave, if you would be so kind, I'll have a double RBF and get Barry one as well.  Everyone else must be at home for saturday night.  (Bath Night)  Lol.

Well, I am still struggling with photo bucket, but occasionally I can get one out and I had said I would try and get a shot of the mine truck on the depressed center flat car. So here goes.

 photo Johns Picture 304.jpg

I drilled some holes in the I-beams to accomodate the chains and it worked fairly well.

But, no boomers or come alongs showing. Haven't figured out how to model them.

I know, I know it is a small mine truck compared to some today, but this is why this one can be shipped by rail..

Hope you are all having a great Memorial week-end. Galaxy, sure hope you get lucky.

Ray, hope it can slow down a little for you now, you have been running in notch 8 for quite sometime.

Anyone heard from Saronterry in Wisconsin lately, it has sure been a while.

Prayers and blessings to all.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Work Front There are two things I can count on at work on a Saturday.

1 Cannot count on Dave. (Did not call or show up)

2 Some one will show up 10 minutes before closing, keep me 45 minutes after I closed and not buy a darn thing!

Far as Dave coming in, I would have been shocked if he did. Said he would be there Sunday but I not holding my breath. I thought I was going to need him today, had 3 customers there from 10:20 to 12:30 and then it was dead. Only had 7 customers all day. Well, I had 8 but I did not counting the 400 pound woman that wanted a $200.00 Queen set that would last here 10 years and help her back. Whistling She had a butt that I could sit a Beer can on standing up!

Well, the BBQ is about done so see you all later.

 Ken

Greetings from a quaint small New England town incorporated in 1664. That's right, 1664.

[YAWN]

LION is from NYC.....

The first native New Yorkers were the Lenape, an Algonquin people who hunted, fished and farmed in the area between the Delaware and Hudson rivers. Europeans began to explore the region at the beginning of the 16th century–among the first was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian who sailed up and down the Atlantic coast in search of a route to Asia–but none settled there until 1624. That year, the Dutch West India Company sent some 30 families to live and work in a tiny settlement on “Nutten Island” (today’s Governors Island) that they called New Amsterdam. In 1626, the settlement’s governor general, Peter Minuit, purchased the much larger Manhattan Island from the natives for 60 guilders in trade goods such as tools, farming equipment, cloth and wampum (shell beads).

Yeah, for some of you, that may look funny. To those of us who are from the/live in/lived in/visiting it is not looking funny. I used to live in Mr. B's state, Mass. Many townships/villages here were settled in the 1600s. Not just the Pilgrims!

Well, the steamer was there, built in 1986, in China. It was a chinese Mike, a bit of a disappointment, not being a USA loco. But the Locos at Steamtown are Canadian in origin, but FAR closer than China.

We MAY be busy tonight, maybe not, MOH says cramps are setting in. We will see. Maybe, Maybe not. We have nothing really to do, so *free time*, unless we want to go out to get into trouble!

so, that is that, nap time.

Gooooood Morning!!!

Yah, I know it’s not Sunday, but I had a bit of time here so I thought I’d pop in now. Besides, those Sunday Buffets have given me a bit of a pooch so…I’ll have the #2 special over easy on the eggs bacon and home fries with a cup of that Marrakesh Express Dark Roast coffee please. Bought some of that for the Keu….er um…single cup coffee maker. Kinda like it. Oh and could you have them pour a bit of milk gravy over the potatoes. Thank you.

Brother-in-law got married last night. Nice small wedding at the SIL's place. Maybe a dozen or more in attendence. My wife was real excited. Me, I just always considered them married anyway so it seemed no big deal to me. Uh 29 years engaged and living together pretty much takes any woo hoo out of it for me. Glad they did it, but well, you know. At 57 and almost 30 years, why now? Probably insurance's my guess. Oh well. At least I know what to call her now.

I’s not rainy, and it’s not windy so I think I’ll burn off the burn pit this a.m.. Then I guess … SurpriseWOW!!! My gosh! Those notes dropped from 34,000 feet make a pretty big bang when they hit the floor. Scared me to death. Hope the last leg of the journey is a safe one Richard!!

Aaaanyway, things are slowing down a bit…Hmmsounds like I’m just w*rking my bee-hind off here though that’s far from the truth, and I’m getting caught up on things needing done outside so…next week it’s calling for rain so that opens up for some more w*rk in the trainroom. I could have gotten some done yesterday, but something called “Mysteries and Monsters in America” Or title close to that, was on and…heyBig Smile, who could pass that upYes. Also noticed a movie on Netflix called Zombeavers. An exciting tale of cabin camping youth who seem to upset a bunch of Zombie Beavers. That my friends, sounds like the makings of a classic popcorn and movie night.Cool

MrB- Good luck on the Jury Duty, my check in on Tuesday eve resulted in a “your Jury service is complete. Thank you. You no longer have to check in.” I guess everybody was fine with what the judge said and no trials.

Welp, best get a move on. Slept in today Embarrassed and have sooooo much plannedWhistling. Not really, but the wife will want to go into town and eat out. Kinda like a thing for us. Once a week for you new guys. And for you older guys i.e. mainly Garry, on here, no haven’t been going to the Chinese Buffets much. Still eating take out once a week or so, but when the Buffet closed up on this end of town (still don't know why) and all the girls I “knew” went who knows where (they didn't writeCrying), just doesn’t seem the same. Brenda and I were talking about how many years we went to the one together, not counting when I'd go during the week.(across form Menard's and Lowe's you know so I'd be in there a couple times a week. Around lunch time it always seemed Whistling) She's surprised they didn't adopt me. She began to wonder when a couple started teaching me Cantonese. Now, the only buffet left in Springfield is in the middle of town, (well to me it is) and not easy to get to so we usually eat at one of two fine establishments, but they aren’t as friendly as the old buffet girls were. Ah Buffet Girls....like a whole other species.

Talkin to some friends last night at the "wedding" about the way relationships change over the years as you get all comfy and used to your spouse. He said she (his wife) still laughs at all his dumb jokes. I said Brenda used to laugh at a lot of stuff I said. But now she rarely laughs at anything. I guess she’s growing tired of me. Lost the spark. Brenda spoke up and said “No, that’s not it at all. It’s because back then I thought you were kidding. Now, I know you’re serious.”

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I could use another cup of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast coffee for my R&GV RR Mug, please.

Well Galaxy, I guess we all figured you and YOH were, ah...., busy.  Yep, that's the way to phrase it, you were busy...  Do hope both of you are enjoying a much deserved vacation.

Ah Barry, I guess I still prefer the songs of Guiseppi Verdi...  You know, Joe Green.  Easier on the old ears.....  LOL!  Actually I'm an old fan of 50's and 60's type stuff, Blues, (feeling sad to lose BB King), Blues Brothers, Dooby Brothers, BS&T, and all those artists.  Old fashioned I guess....  Whistling

I'm still working on items from the convention...  Now is the crunching of numbers, writing of thank Yous, and getting all finished and done with.  We (the committee) are already planing two picnics to just get together and enjoy ourselves and hopefully get out to see all the layouts that we were too busy to get to...  I also need to get to w*rk on this years garden.  today and tomorrow will be the lasrt couiple nice days before the Floweeduh and Clownafornia weather sets in around here.  (can't imagine how you southern folks can stand that much heat...).  Supposed to get all the way up to 69°F here today and the high 70's tomorrow.  After that for the next week or so it will be hide down celler or stay in the house with the air comnditioner on.  Will be in the high 80's they warn....

Catch you all later!

Richard You didn't go to Boston? That is a must see where Phily has never really been on my list. USS Constitution was a must see for me and I glad I did! I was very moved when I visted Pearl Harbor, just standing there looking into the harbor thinking about Dec 7.

We have been to Boston but it was a long time ago. This year we chose Philadelphia as the base for our trip because we wanted to visit both Valley Forge and Gettysburg. When I looked at the map and saw that Ellis Island was less than two hours away, it was added to the itinerary. Downtown Philly was just because we were there, had some time to spare, and had never been there.

Good morning everybody ....

Duke .... Great to see you, and many thnks for your service. Please visit the Diner more often even if it only to say "Hello"

Galaxy ... Enjoy the day

Bear .... You commented in WPF about my 1/87 volleyball game in my County Park. I'll respond to you here. I made included the volleyball game because one of our daughters is very active in volleyball. ... Back when she was in high school she played on a team which was very good and became 4th in the State of Michigan. After graduation, she became a teacher, but also was the high school volleyball coach. She took over a team that had a losing record in prior years. After her coaching, the team did exceptionally well, and she was named Coach of the Year for the entire state of Michigan. ... Now she still is a teacher, but she does not coach school volleyball. She has her own chldren now, and they take time.

That got me thinking. The years certainly are passing quickly.

Jim M .... I know what you mean about not have energy we had when we were younger. I did a little yard work outside yesterday, and tired easily.

YGW ... Since you asked, I'm doing great. ... and you ?

I completed the two cabooses yesterday, and now they are on the layout. Time for them to go to work.

What were the New Zealand wars ?

The New Zealand Wars were a series of armed conflicts between 1845 and 1872 between some native Maori tribes and the Government whose forces were comprised of British Imperial and colonial troops, and their Maori Allies. It was basically over land, and was acerbated by the Government who by using land confiscation to punish “Rebel Maori” also seized land belonging to the “Loyal tribes” as well.  While the figures are inexact at  its height 18000 Government Forces faced 5000  Maori, and total losses being around 750 and up to 2500 respectively.  It may not be many when compared with the Battle of Gettysburg where the total dead was over 7800 , but if you’re dead , you’re dead. The legacy of the War still continues these days in the courtroom.

Cambus, as I volunteered to host the Diner down here in NZ, I just linked to what I think are appropriate videos in Youtube. Though it is taking a sometime in previewing what’s suitable. I’m quite sure the Diners would not mind visiting the UK, though I’d suggest you get settled into your new abode first.
 I see I wasn't missed so much.

Hey there,

We are where we are supposed to be now. I see I wasn't missed so much.

We are in a quaint typical New England town. nothing over 2 or 3 stories tall, mostly chake siding or vinyl.

Tomorrow we will be riding the train/river cruise here:

http://essexsteamtrain.com/

Sunday we go to Newport, RI to hte mansions to see how the wealthy half lived a century {+} ago.

What other trouble we will get into, remains to be seen!

I am hoping for a little romance. Big Smile

Well, It's late. traffic to get here on I95 was a bear or caboose, as Ken would say. Everone trying to get of the city at the same time. also an accident we passed on the 3-laner.

see you whnever I can.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please

Work, odd day. I was busy for the first 2 hours, then not a sole after 1:50 PM?

Dave maybe at work Saturday. Called the GM and told him he should be getting out of the hospital today and he is, he will be in Saturday. Paul told him "don't kill your self and come back to soon". I know Paul does not want him back period! He has tried and tried to get Dave canned. I hope Dave does not show up ever again my self.

YGW I do hope for the best for Dave, just not around me! Even when I first started he was a slob. I cannot tell you how many times I had to pick up coffee cups that still have coffee in them with mold floating on top all ove the show room! Trash ever where, left laying where he dropped it for days and sometimes weeks.

Richard You didn't go to Boston? That is a must see where Phily has never really been on my list. USS Constitution was a must see for me and I glad I did! I was very moved when I visted Pearl Harbor, just standing there looking into the harbor thinking about Dec 7.

Most moving moment for by self was when I was stationed at Ft Bragg N.C. I was a Military Police officer and was working 4 days on and 3 day off shifts. On one of my 3 days off I grapped my sleeping bag, tent and hit the road on my 750 Honda.  Three days off, no where to go and 3 days to get there! If I saw a back road, I took it. Found a old over grown dirt road and went to see what was there. Came across a Confederate Grave Yard. It was long for gotton and most of the tomb stones had fallen over. I camped with them that night and spent all of the next day sitting the tomb stone up right. Stared visting the grave with a couple of guys from my unit and cleaned the grave yard up as best we could.

Funny, I am a northern boy and so where the guys that helped. But, there where Americans Soliders and they deservered the respect!

Dave - 100 years ago ? Why her birthday and not one of the other many Kings and Queens ?

Victoria was Monarch when Canada became an independent country, rather than a British colony.  Plus she was the longest reigning Monarch until the present Queen Elizabeth II passed her recently.

When most people were farmers, pre 1900, in southern Ontario this also gave school kids a day off during planting season, probably not the best holiday of the year.

Physically tired tonight after two days of work cleaning out the garage with some help from my granddaughter.  At 72 I am not used to physical work.  Haven't had much time for working on layout this week but did stain up a batch of ties for a lead and no 4 wye.

Getting my hockey fix tonight.  Semifinals have been awesome.

Best wishes to all for Memorial Day weekend, especially all veterans.

This post is coming to you from 34,000 feet above the surface of the earth. We are returning from our three decades of history vacation back east. As I mentioned, we visited Gettysburg on Tuesday (1800's). We visited Philadelphia and Valley Forge on Wednesday (1700's), and Ellis Island on Thursday (1900's). Of the four sites, I was a little underwhelmed by downtown Philadelphia and Gettysburg was my hands-down favorite. Now it is back to the grind of normal life. I am glad Monday is a holiday so I have an extra day to recover from the vacation. Shifting three time zones wreaks havoc on my system.

Chloe a beer thank you. Sorry I have not been around recently but my wife and I have been packing up for the move to the new house (the one with my layout shed). I never realised just how much c**p one acquires over a lifetime all of which is catalogued and kept or discarded. All hers is "required" and mine " is it really necessary" but we are holding our own on this front. Ja Bear how discerning ref bagpipes yes I am a lowland Scot the only reason I am fed up with the a for mentioned "agony bags" is we are subjected to them incessently in Glasgow. Enjoying your videos am working on downloading some British videos but need a little help! best wishes and prayers to those in need. And as  a famous comedian in Britain used to finish his act "Who ever your God is may he go with you".

Decoration Day is not unlike Armistice Day, both honor sacrifice----before they were transformed into paid hollidays.

UP831 - This area was known as the "breadbasket" of the south. Sheridan was instructed to destroy it to such a degree that a crow would have to carry its provision with to fly across it. And that is what he did. The scars and resentment still remain. It was one of the first places where total war was waged not just on the soldiers but on the civilians too. Women and children were left destitute, robbed at gun point, burned out of their homes...The resentment factor is almost gone now but thirty years ago it was still rampant. It was so bad right after the war that their was this famous special forces soldier known as the "Grey ghost", Colonel Mosby,  that after the war he becames friends with Grant and the locals turned their back on Mosby and considered him a traiter. He didnt desrve the treatment but that is how intense the anger was then. One can still see "Rebel" flags flying around here. Thats prety amazing that their are civil war renactors outside of this area. Why would they want to renact an event from a foreign land ? I cannot see myself in a kilt renacting battles between Scotland and England - Though it might be fun a time or to ( and a bit breezy Whistling )

Blownout - What is heavy space rock ?

JaBear - Defender of the faith ? Wow that is nice. There are some here that would have you tarred and feathered for that ! What were the New Zealand wars ? Isnt it strange there is a guy here who buys WWII equipment restores them and then displays it in his own musuem. He has a Sherman and I think is in the market for a Panzer.

Herrinchoker - What is decoration day ?

Dave - 100 years ago ? Why her birthday and not one of the other many Kings and Queens ?

Garry - How are you ?

Has anyone herd from Galaxy or Ulrich ?

Welp hope to complete the move this weekend and then it will be months of unpacking!!!

Prayers for those in need and wish everyone a happy holiday weekend ( for the states folks )

Good morning to all of you for whom it's still morning, and g'day or g'night for the rest.

OK, I've been on this new old man pill (for type 2 diabetes) for a week now, and I'm feeling fine.  A little less energy, but I was warned about that, and I suppose that means it's working.  When I need it, I've got it, though.  Another great game of hockey last night, and I can tell my bicycling is helping with my legs.

Hoping to get some work done on the layout over the weekend, but I also need to grill some meat.

Good Morning

Sunny out but kinda coolish here...supposed to only get to 50F.

Been kind of busy here the last few days. We had relatives over from wife's side and mine...at the same time. And they got along really well. Tongue Tied Smile And the springing little Spring hid the entire time, lol.

JaBear: My band plays something akin to heavy space rock.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have my usual gigante cup of coffee with boo coo cream, please.

Not much has transpired since last night.  The sun's coming up And I woke up to be able to enjoy it. And, that's a good thing.  Hope everyone gets to wake up this morning.

This weekend is Memorial Day observed.  When I was young it was always May 30th.  My parents and I would always go up to the area where they grew up and honor the graves with flowers.  Then the local veterans group would do a ceremonial honor guard for the unknown soldier.  The "grave" was a wooden cross in the ground.  I don't think anyone was actually buried there, but it really didn't matter.  Then the whole family would have a picnic in the park.  This was back in the 50s when men wore suits and women wore dress to events like that.  Why?  To show respect for what the whole day represented.  It was a very different time.

still haven't made it to LHS to get some parts for those U-33C shells I got.

In light of the weekend, here's A statement from Ulyses S Grant to Robert E Lee.

"You have been a valiant and noble foe.  You may keep your sword."

i hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

What happens when a new person becomes King or Queen ? Do they pick a new day to celebrate the new birthday ?

As the Queen or to give her proper title,  Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of New Zealand and Her Other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, has reigned since1952, six years before I was born, that question has not yet arisen. I suspect that nothing would change apart from the holiday’s name to the Kings Birthday.
I think that reenactors for various wars and eras are to be found nearly everywhere today, here while they mainly concentrate on WW1 and WW2, there are also those who react the New Zealand Wars, a series of armed conflicts that ran from 1845 to 1872. What amazes me is what’s available for purchase now, right from uniforms to artillery pieces!!
Tonights video is of some contemporary action on the North Island Main Trunk Line.
Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.Smile
