When All else fails, Read the "DEstructions"....
Two below zero at last report, and the furnace decides to go on strike. It tries to fire up.for about 15 seconds, then shuts down without any heat coming out of the registers. Good thing it stopped giving heat after the missus was in bed, though it means a surprise Sunday visit by the HVAC guys.
If you hear an explosion coming from Endicott, Galaxy, it's probably just my house.

YGW: Merchandise Planning. You kind of have the right idea, but it's more like let's put 6' of tires next to 2' of chrome plated swizzle sticks. Then we'll put Men's and Boys over in the NW corner, and well put Shoes between Juniors and Pluses. It's not like I'm dressing mannequins or anything like that. That is usually referred to as Visual Merchandising, which is a whole separate thing.
Well, it's late. I'm off to bed. I'll try to post later in the day.

Already March - I nearly missed a complete month!
Yesterday was a very special day for me! Thanks to your great help, I was able to put the new set of glasses on order! Petra took me to the optometrist, where I spent three hours. The optometrist took extra care to get all the measurements required to taylor-make the glasses for me and rechecked my vision. The left eye has seen some damage, resulting in a somewhat smaller viewing angle. But that should not stop me from coming back to a near normal life again. It´ll take three weeks, before the glasses are ready. Believe me - I have started to count the hours! It´s been a nightmare for me not to see properly.
I will (be able to) look spectacular with the new spectacles

Galaxy, I hope you don't end up like me after my shoulder surgery 20 years ago. My arm had to be kept up at 90 degrees to my body for a month while it healed. I could move my forearm, but I had a big chunk of foam strapped to my body to hold the arm up. I had no clothes that would fit over this contraption, so I bought an ultra-large hockey jersey to wear to work. After a week or so, I was able to wear a T-shirt and then put the foam block and straps over that, so I didn't need the jersey. I was passing by a few of the ladies at work the first day in the T-shirt, and one said, "So that's what it looks like underneath." I thought quickly and came up with one of my best come-backs ever: "They have them in black at Victoria's Secret." While in this mode, I had to use a beach ball to hold my arm up while I took a shower. It took a while to find one of those in April in Massachusetts. As a goalie, I still wear that Bruins jersey proudly over my pads on Tuesday nights.
I've started installing the first grade crossing system on the layout, the one with just crossing flashers. I've got the flashers themselves installed (Oregon Rail Supply kit-built) and now I'm working on the photodetectors and IR LEDs so they'll work at night.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Extra strong coffee with a pinch of coal dust in a RUSSIAN IRON mug, please.
So far, most of the N locos I've tested (for sale on the-bay) will only need a little oil and run time and then should run like new. Some of the older vintage locos have mileage on them, but still run after a fashion. Definitely time to sell the collection off. Need to re-establish the HO train funds account after some larger purchases. Really looking forward to starting the new layout.
Think I overdid it on the ankle recovery. Time to back off, but not going to use crutches again because the one shoulder is totally messed up. Probably should have it in a sling. I'm not growing old very gracefully.

Nope, I believe he said in a sling strapped to my waist. And that is just what I am inagining, will be difficult enough but, I/we will make it work somehow.
MOH is taking family medical leave and has at least a month of full time off, according to teh Surgeon,but may nto need it in totality... Then I start PT, adn I will be off nad runnign.
I have a couple oversized shirts I intend to wear while I heal...
MOH will shower with, to clean,and will take care of the um, necessities you know...until I can reach certain areas of my own body again.
I CANNOT WAIT. I went to the grocery store yesterday and with no pain killers on board {cna't take as my bleed}, my shoudler has been telling me all about it since! I was in such pain, worse than my back!
MY dyslecxic typing may actually improve as I will ahve to one-handedly hunt n peck! DOn't epect much form me. I CAN do a mouse left handedly adn I eat left handly anyway..euro style!

Ha! When I showed up at work wearing my strange arm support, my office mate asked how I was going to type like that. Since he was strictly a 2-finger typist himself, I held up my good left hand with all 5 fingers outstretched and said, "Two and a half times faster than you."
Anyway, good luck with it. To be honest, I couldn't wait to get into the OR so my shoulder could get back to normal. The last thing I remember before waking up in the recovery room was a pretty nurse putting a mask over my face and saying, "Pick a sunny beach!"
Bear - Try turning the power off to your unit for a few minutes and then turn the power bck on. Sometimes it will reset itself and fire up.
Todd - hmmm that black eye doesnt look so good here is a steak to throw on it. Next time duck !!

Todd ... Good seeing you. When I do ribs in the broiler I put a small amout of water in the bottom of the broiler pan to keep the meat moist and tender. It is better than boiling first.

Chloe, just a hot chocolate for me right now.
Got up early enough to get to church today. I don't think I mentioned that my DIL's Father who lives in the Southwest had a major heart attack and ended up getting a quadruple bypass. DIL flew out there to be with him for a few days. She was supposed to get back early this morning. My son dropped the girls off at Sunday School and just as I was sitting down to breakfast there is a knock on the door... I open it and my son walks in. First thing he tells me is that his wife is not happy... Her flight was cancelled due to sn*w out there. She is in New Mexico I think. Hopefully she will get in sometime late tonight. So I only got one cup of Marrakesh Express this morning cause I was nice enough to share the pot with my son while I ate breakfast.
Tonight the family is taking my littlest Granddaughter out to dinner. She picked kentucy Fried Chicken, so that is what I will have for supper. Not where I would have picked to go, but, it is her Birthday (on Thursday)! I was planning that we would celebrate her birthday next weekend so I haven't even got a card for her yet...
Glad to hear Ulrich will be getting his new spectacles soon! Galaxy, prayers for your upcoming surgery! Hope all goes well and you have a quick recovery!
Rob, I don't get up on the roof when I remove the sn*w... I use a roof rake that I can reach most of the panels from the deck on my house. I don't climb around on roofs anymore! I occasionally get Benign Positional Vertigo and up on a roof is really not a good place to be when I get one!
Starting work on a new part of the layout. The fun here is trying to figure out how to get out of the corner I painted myself into, so to speak. This is where the return loop will be that will end up coming over the lower tracks and onto the fill where the little grider brodge is. I need to make a part of this area easily removable in case I ever need to get to the tracks that are going to staging under where the mountain will be. Some of you may remember this spot:
The tracks shown go to upper staging. There is now another track on the inside which is the return loop. The return loop will come around to here:
The tracks under the bridge are the feeder to the return loop and to upper staging.

Looks like resistance soldering is the way to go for track using DCC. I've never tried this. Even though I will be using Kato (HO) Unitrack, the more I have read about it, the more inclined I am to solder x-number of sections together with power leads to each section. Still more I need to learn about this, so any suggestions will be appreciated as always.
Time to take more hay out for the horses and do evening critter rounds.

Not much happening here today. The weatherman said we were to get snow all day. The sun is shining right now. Just helping MOH tidy up around the house because we both have to work all week, and that's a good thing.
YGW: I like the work well enough and it is enjoyable. It isn't actual design, but like I said, it is related. It is nice to be back in commercial again. But, as a result of everything, I find I miss kitchen and bath. Either way, I love what I do!
Galaxy: I truly hope you can take advantage of the potential romantic possibilities as a result of your surgeries. I hope that's ok to say and not have to talk to Vinnie and the boys downtown, ya know? (Feigned Don Carlione voice). Anyway, I wish the twain of you well.

The space heater is doing its best, but it's not meant to heat a split level by itself. The wife is convinced the furnace is providing heat, so she's keeping between me and the circuit breaker box so I can't shut it off. She also refuses to have the HVAC guy come out, even though her mom has had pipes burst the last two winters. The last air temperature I saw inside was 51, and it's 45 in the train room. George Carlin was right!!!

Rob, if you recall I have Kato Unitrack for my HO layout that I laid in 2007. I didn't solder any rail joiners and have a feeder about every 10 feet. I have never experienced a power drop. One of the big advantages of Unitrack is the rail joiner as they are far more secure than the typical Atlas type. In fact if you tried to solder one I think the plastic would melt. If you use Kato's power feeders, you should not have any problems. At least I haven't in the past 7 years. The Atlas track and turnouts in the service yard are another matter. I have been tempted to rip up that yard and replace the track but it is a lot of work.
Well tonight is a big PBS night with the season finale of Downton Abbey plus a couple of other shows we like so I will be parked from about 6:30.

The family went out to Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner tonight as that was where Granddaughter #2 wanted to go for her Birthday Dinner. She will be 6 this coming Thursday. I dunno, I seem to remember that at least the chicken used to be good at KFC.... I wasn't impressed tonight. Was very over cooked and tasteless and the chicken was the best part of the meal...... My son had some sort of coupon that he used so the price was pretty cheap. Went back over to his house for cake and Ice Cream after dinner. That was good!
Driving was not good out there tonight. We got a mixture of sn*w and freezing rain. I decided to drive into Waterloo and take the main road home rather than the shorter back road over to Geneva that my son lives on. Good choice I think. Even the main road was treacherous on the way home. I arrived safe and more or less sound and headed down to the train rooms and got a bit more done. This is an area I am somewhat planning as I go. Have an idea of what I want to do, but need to make a lot of decisions on how to get there.

Uncle Bob, You might remind her the cost of repairing the damage that burst pipes would cause in the house and that insurance doesn't cover negligence! I would say if your furnace and the space heater together are only keeping your house up to 51°F there is a definate problem. Oh, and don't run the space heater without someone being up to watch it. Major fire hazard! Read about them all the time in the newspaper. Hope you are well insured. I would inform her that either the space heater has to turned off for the night or she needs to stay awake and watch it!
