Hi all,

Ken:It is NOT my MRRing or the cost of it that is the trouble, it is other things. The arguement for you two may be solved with more money, but our is not really  a "money issue".

{and others}: thanks for the "encouragement" and/or "well wishes", it simply comes down to this: MOH and I each want a  different thing. A MAJOR thing that is causing a problem. Not having much money certainly doesn't help, but that is not the real issue. Having money may help, but it won't really solve the major problem.A couple cannto survive going in two directions on major issues.

I CAN'T, WON't go into all the details here, it is not the place to air the "dirty laundry".

There are only a very few here that I am "confidant to/with" that  I would would probably {not} even tell in private, unless they asked.{and they have my regular email addy if they are really interested, but i would not suppose to dump it on them}.

Tghre is no doubt i would have to move, as the trailer really is MOH's. so I would ahve to move out. I, like Jeffrey, would have a difficult time as even our joint budget is not really enough{we are better off than many though}, though I would also get back social services I once had as single. My disability alone is not enough, and they want to cut SSD by 20% in '16. I could never find a retnal place for the single $1 Jeffrey had.

So, I am surprised Ulrich is out of MRRing totally, but he will find his way back, he usually does.

have a great night.

YGW, thanks for the hint on the thermostat.  We have forced hot water, not air, and neither the new nor the old thermostat locations are above heating units.  This is a zone valve system, and it runs on 28 volts.  The last thing I'll do is reconnect the system downstairs.

I am early medical retired, trust me, for someone who "has nothing to do", I rarely get "free time". and often when it does come to me,  that is taken up with a nap, NOT MRRing!.

Hint:

Take it from me, much your senior, SAve Save save, then invest wisely, now are your better years to accumulate wealth through compounding... I wish I had been better at it way back then! You could easily become the "famous millionaire" that I/we did not become. Now adays you need at least 2 mill for a comfy retirement and by the time you get there maybe 3 or 4 mill.

We scramble now, but it stil won't work for us.

YOu'll be able to "enjoy it more" when you retire if you accumulate it now, IF you can. we know the routine.

Enjoy the now, but plan for your future...it may come sooner than you think!

V8Vega

He called later and it needs a new catalytic converter cost $450 + smog check $60 + registration renewal $85. I am OK with this as I feared something worse and I plan to keep this car a long time so it should pass in the future.

My del Sol is one of the nicest cars to drive I have ever driven.

Cars, You can't live with them, and can't without them.

I just put i a new $319 INTAKE HOSE. I thought it was plastic, but it is hard rubber, it cracked and was sucking air in til the check engine light came on. it's about 3'' in diameter, bent and about 14" long,$319!!!

so I don't know...

Where i live= no buses.Sigh

LOL ha ha ha ha....

My grandmother used to say {in a southern drawl} "Ain't nuttin' a roll of duct tape and a gallon of paint can't fix"!

All I knew was the Check engine light was on, I was suspecting one of those many many "sensors" to do this and that that I would have no idea how to replace!!

Although, had I used duct tape, it would wear out after a while any way...Whistling

All You had to do was cover the hole or crack, duct tape and a layer of Electrical tape over that. Its there to stop from sucking outside air in and keeping the gases in. Not like trying to stop liquid from leaking out. Or go to a big box store and get a Plumbers 3'' rubber clamp, slide rubber over hole and it comes with hose clamps to tighten around it. Have one around my vent stack in my kitchen, been there 30yrs, I put it there. Beats the hell out of 319.00, that You say doesn't come easy.

You say, duct tape will wear out after awhile anyway....well so did the part that was on there!

There were actually three wide cracks in it. It would have required a LOT of duct tape, and what color to paint it?Whistling

And Iff'en I had horses instead of a car, I'd still have to feed it daily and muck the stalls.

Iff'en it {the horse] "sucked too much air" I'd have to put it down!

Jeremy, you'll note by the time tag on this post that it's 11:30 on the east coast where I live.  I just got up.  Last night was hockey night, so I slept in even a bit later than usual.  Today I'll have all day with no interruptions to run the new thermostat wire.  Then, maybe I'll run some trains or play some flight simulator.  Yeah, I like retirement.

At Tuesday Night Hockey, a "shutout" is giving up anything less than 10 goals, but since I'm over 65 I got a "senior shutout," which is anything less than 12 1/2 goals plus the difference between my age and 65.  Anything less than 14 1/2 goals now qualifies.  No, we don't have half-goals, but it's easier to remember that than to figure out whether it's less-than 14 or less-than-or-equal-to 14.  We are, after all, hockey players, and adding in the half-goal makes it sound even more like a silly government regulation.

I had the check engine light come on in my Saturn Ion a couple of years ago.  It was some kind of cracked air pump housing, not the pump itself, but just the plastic housing.  At our bargain-priced shop, it was going to be about $800.  I looked at the car and realized it was going to be a pile of money just to get it through the next inspection, with who knows what on the horizon.  I did some shopping and ended up at the Volkswagon dealer right in town with a new Jetta.  I like this car, but I will be exchanging it with my daughter for her 1999 Toyota Corolla, as she needs a reliable car every day, and I'll be happy with an older car that wants to live in my garage and take it easy in its sunset years.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Been thinking of giving the Fire Station on my layout a name. How about, "Scott Running Bear Memorial Fire Station"? Any thoughts or other suggestions?

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Afternoon Diners,

Flo, I'll have a gigante cup of coffee with copious amounts of cream.

Have the day off and taking a short break from working around the house.  MOH decided to clean out the kitchen so stuff is collected all over waiting to be "edited."

Herr Ulrich, if I may be so bold, it sounds like your friends are concerned and want to help.  Well, part of serving is also being willing to be served.  And if all else fails, being an armchair modeler is not so bad.  That way you can stay a part of the hobby and no doubt you will get the itch and model something.   I did not know that Magen is the word for stomach.  Thanks for helping me increase my  far too meager vocabulary.  I understood the rest of it.

Bear, we have several friends who are Kiwis and we also have some Australian friends.  A goodly lot, I'd say.  I did not know that the NZ flag's stars were 5 pointed.  Thanks for the education.

Anyway, wanted to participate.  Hope I'm not too presumptuous.  Enjoy!

Less is more,...more or less!

Aloha Railfans! Flo - my usual please. And fire up the hot chocolate, it is a 30F day here so i am sure it will be needed. Keep the A&A handy for that Mopar guys  Beer!

In General - Not too much on the RR side going on. Been studying a bit on the old PM roster. Never hurts to reread a good book.

Galaxy - Thats alot of $$$ for an intake hose.

Mr Dispatcher - "Shoud have bought Duct tape, it will fix anything.LaughLaugh

That NASCAR 200mph tape is good stuff huh? Git-R-Done! LaughLaugh

V8Vega - Just so you know your not alone here, I too live where emissions testing is required (East Va, not the West one). Though here, usually when we have to replace a converter, it is because it was stolen. Not worn out. Angry

Mr Beasley - "maybe I'll run some trains or play some flight simulator.  Yeah, I like retirement." Enjoy! Cool

Ulrich - I spose right now your feeling pretty low. It is a huge dissapointment when "Life Happens" and ruins your RR'ing. For whatever reason, thru the course of our days, it seems inevitable for each and every one of us.

I understand the problems are private. However, we here are on the RR side of things. Certainly you will let us know if we can help in this respect.

Ken - First - hope your feeling better these days. Remember to get some rest too, rest is key. Second - been working on your hard drives. Getting them ready to put in the machine and load. Gotta Beer here waitin for ya when you get better!

Well folks, i spose that covered all i wanted to get out at the moment. Hope all are doing well, and I hope to check back in later.

Aloha,

Douglas

well, SInce we have a "new improved forum" probably coming with tomorrow's maintenance, I will see you guys on the other side of it. MAybe.

Tomorrow is MOH's {major} surgical proceedure. MOH is scared, and I will be man enough to "be there" in MOH's "hour of need". ANy fighting uh hem, disagreements will for now be called off.It is the first invasive surgical proceedure MOH has had. I will have had about every part of my poor ol'e body operated on, ahem, except one. AND I cannot wait for the Right shoulder surgery in 6 weeks! The left shoulder is getting to be about as useless as the right but it will have to wait til the fall.AND the 4th of Feb is my ROOT canal, while the 4th of March is my shoulder, hmmm, ominous.

I also think we are coming down with something,, I won't explain details but unless it is nerves, and just a sinus attack, MOH have the same symptoms today.

well,

Later

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of hpt decaf coffee would really hit the spot right now....  Thank you Ma'am.

Been a long but productive day.  I left here late morning to go feed Claude at my sister's house.  he was pleased to see me and let me pet him and even scratch his tummy for a while.  Sweet kittie, he is.  I went straight from there to Rochester for a Convention Committee meeting.  Spent a couple hours working on the master schedule for the event.  Got home just in time to start supper, and then wrote (or should I say updated an old one) my Moment for Mission I will be presenting at church Sunday Morning.  Just waiting on one little item I need to know to get the one for the early service sent where it needs to go....  Expect a phone call soon.  I also updated the spreadsheet for the Convention Schedule. and finally got in here to see what is goimg on...

MOH is scared

That tells me a lot Galaxy....  May be the source of the anger going on.  It is scary for someone who hasn't been under the knife before.  I know I would be terrified!

Last night I found out my oldest son is going to get Physical Therapy for a neck and upper back pain he has been putting up with.  I told him he is too young to be having that kind of problem already.  He is all of 48 years old.  Guess I am not doing too bad for 68 years young.  I do limp around and walk bent over half of the time.  Gotta get back in shape this Spring... Get out and start walking a lot more.  But first, I have a lot more to get done on the layout.

Hope you all have a great night.  I am going to go sit by the wood stove which is cranking out some good heat at the moment.  Currently 5°F outside, just like last night.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, a JSTL and a Beer chaser. Give that Buick guy a Beer as well.

Work was busy for a Wednesday. At one point I had 3 sets of customers at one time. In my line of work, not a good thing. Only had two sales but over all a good day with $2500.

Felt fine yesterday and most of today till around 7:00 pm. Starting to ache all over and think I maybe running a fever again.

Douglas I will send you a PM in the next few days.

No, No, Ray. This has been building for nigh on 3-4 years, surgery is only a recent thing. Its actually really a re-hash of something 6 years ago, that has changed a bit in its "manifestation", but is NOT a  new item, just because MOH is suddenly scared due to surgery.

Surgery may not help now, but it is not related to that.

If you are really interested, you know how to shoot me a regular email, I shall be happy to help you.

Good Morning!

We definitively have a wet winter this year. It´s ra*ning and quite windy - not a day to spend much time outside.

Galaxy - I am sorry to hear about your, say, difficulties. I hope you´ll be able to settle them and you and YOH are happy again (aside from all those smaller and bigger health issues that keep pestering all of us in a certain age).

Watch a couple a steam videos yesterday and found one, which could not describe in a better way, what railfanning was about in my youth days. Got 75 spare minutes? Then join me in a sentimental journey and watch this video. It´s composed of Super 8 clips taken in the early 1970´s along the main line from Hamburg up north and describes the trip to Westerland, when the express trains were still pulled by the Deutsche Bundesbahn class 0.10 oilfired Pacifics. The video also shows the country I live in. Steam traction ended in 1974 on this line, only weeks before I returned from the US. The last steam train in Western Germany ran in 1977. I still remember the advertising campaign Deutsche Bundesbahn had in that year "Our engines have quit smoking!"

Have a wonderful day!

 Well, Today is the DAy!

MOH's surgery! MOH is more settled this morning so far...that could change later.

I forgot MOH had an invasive proceedure-a cyst removed from right finger before, so did have to be put out, and is more calm now...WE have everything ready to go...

MOH is off from work for 7 to 10 days, and has to turn in badge and tablet this morning. Seems like the president turning over power and control of the country...thats about the way they make it out to be...

well, I'd best get ready to take MOH we don't really have to leave for a few hours yet, MOH is not first in line....gives the Dr. some time to "perfect his craft" on others before MOH is in line...Whistling

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and a mug of Seneca Lake Blend dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.  Oh and keep a pot going for me.  May need it this morning.

Galaxy, will keep YOH in my prayers for an easy time with the surgery and a short recovery time.  Will also keep you in my prayers as well!

My so should be arriving soon to help me get a blood sugar reading from Blackie.  I need 4 hands to get it done just like at the Vets....  He appears to be doing well by his behavior.  He is begging for food much less, and seems more alert.

Sun is out there shining again this morning.  Temperature when I got up today was 7°F  (up from the -5°F when I went to bed last night) and is now 18°.  It may warm up enough to completely clear the panels on the roof.  Most did melt off yesterday even though it stayed bitterly cold all day.

Today is Art and Poetry Pick up, sorting, and get out to the judges day for the MLK Committee.  I will have to leave the sorting process soon after the pick up of the materials as I have to give a slide show on Scouting Organization to the Handicaped Troop this evening.  Both of us commissioners are trying to get them to use the Patrol Method correctly.  This time we are adamant that they will start and continue to run a "boy" led troop.  Part of this is to teach them how the BSA is organized from the National Council right down to the unit level.  It all fits together very nicely...  This time there seems to be better buy in from the adult leadership.

Have a good one!

Good morning.  The faintest hint of something white fell during the night.  Haven't been out yet to see if it's snow or ice.  Not enough to care about, anyway.  The 10-day forecast has just reached January 24th, the day of the Springfield show.  Looks OK, although the day before may be iffy.  We shall see.  I plan to go, but I'm not going to take a chance if the weather is bad.

I had rotator cuff surgery about 20 years ago after a skiing accident.  It was not comfortable, but I tried to look on it as an experience that was at least interesting, sort of like being the wounded patient on an episode of MASH.  The last thing I remember was a relatively pretty nurse putting a mask over my nose and mouth and saying, "Pick a sunny beach!"  After it was all over, the thing that bothered me the most was the mac and cheese they served me.  I mean, how can you mess up mac and cheese?

One night, the "thing that goes bump in the night" was my daughter, who woke up and decided to bounce on her bed, fell off and hit her forehead on the corner of some furniture.  She was about 3 at the time.  Off we went to the hospital at midnight for some stitches.  The needle of local anesthetic was painful, but we were both there to hold her hands.  By the time the last stitch was done, daughter Annie was smiling and joking with the doctor, while wife Penny was lying on the table in the next OR, having passed out from the blood.

Top of the page, eh?  OK, hospital mac and cheese for everyone.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

After a grand start, participation is really down again. Come on in, folks, and share your day with us.

I have been giving my MRR activities a few more thoughts. They can be best summarized by "I can´t do without"! The reason why I hesitate to get going is threefold:

  • Health - I do have a big battle coming up and have no idea, how that will affect me in the end - but who knows the future?
  • Financials - my situation won´t improve, so I have to accept the limitations. MRRing on less than a shoestring budget is not always fun, but with a little help, I think I can manage.
  • Loss of confidence - that´s a big one! For whatever reason, I have lost the confidence in my abilities. I know my limitations quite well.

There are also a number of "erroneous zones" in that layout plan of mine - tight radii, not enough depth for the "mountains" reaching to the backdrop. To solve those issuees I´d more length and more width - not much, but as I have reached the limits already, there is no chance for more real estate.

I need a new plan - Sigh

Ulrich I do have lost confidence sometimes with MRRing.

The reason I don't post today or a couple of days is. There's nothing to say that's exciting or worst mentoring.

I'm always here to help out or fill in if I have the answer.

Mr. B - you are welcome. I think I will pass on the Hospital Mac and cheese Dead Now if Flo will make up some Patti LaBelle Mack and cheese, Well then scoot over and give me some elbow room ! Dinner

Ken - Have you gone to teh Doc yet ?

V8 Vega - You know a lot of us easterns resent the Left coast and the stupid stuff we have to do because teh left coast has THAT Mtn range that traps in all of your pollution. Heck on our side of the island all of Washington DC crud flows out to the Atlantic - no problem. Wish a few politicians would flow into the Atlantic too !

Howmus/Rob - If you wnt a good STRONG cup of Joe try some in an N&W MUG. It is strong and black like the steel horses that pull the long strings of coal, sprinkle a bit of coal dust in for flavor. Yep AHHH That is good stuff !

Galaxy - I was wondering if maybe your OH was up tight too because of teh upcoming surgery and time having to be spent at home ? Here is a Angel for her and you.

Jeremy/Garry - Howdy, hope your days are great !

Welp - need to be put back on the injured reserve list again, fell on some ice this weekend , hit my knee on a concrete curb ( ouch ) and it filled up with fluid, went to the saw bones and she said your knee is horrible shape and you need a knee replacement ( from years of construction ), I told her thank you very much BUT I am very happy with the one the good Lord gave me and I think I shall keep it a while Grumpy ! So I have elected to get some miracle goo shot between the bones ( this hurts like you wouldnt believe ) and I am waiting on a call to see if the insurance will pay. The shots come in a series of three at about $1800 a shot if I have to pay out of pocket . I am sure they will just need to get approoval. Welp gotta get back to w**k.

Good afternoon Diners,

Flo, how about a 2011 Sonoma or central coast Pinot Noir?  Oh, don't have that?  Then just my usual gargantuan cup of coffee with lots of cream, please.

not going in to work until 4:00 (pm not am) today.  Helping MOH still with the kitchen redoing/cleaning.  I would really like to replace the cabinets and countertops, but no funds even remotely available.  She still likes Southwest decor, and I can easily design in that, but she's very hard to second guess.

Thinking of the possibility of persuading MOH to accommodate a 2x4 layout that can be stashed out of sight when not in use.  It's been tooooo many years Without any MRRing.  You guys have been an inspiration to get back into it.  I have my son's N scale set.  Though I'm not an overly big fan of N scale, it would be more MRRing in that small of space.  The other thought would be a HO module with a couple of industries for switching.  Any thoughts?

Less is more,...more or less!

up831 - a 2 by 4 won´t give you much of a switching layout in HO scale, but a nice little roundy-rounder with some switching in N scale. There are plenty of track plans available in the web, here are a few selected pages:

I´d be happy to help you with a track plan!

Calling it a day - it´s close to 10pm here - bedtime for Bozo!

up- I have often wondered if one could make a very thin modul that could fit under a high bed and then be brought out, unfold legs that lock in place.. I am sure N scale would work. HO not so sure that would fit.

Good night Ulrich. I agree with your comment about attitude.
