Italian roast coffee in a BURLINGTON NORTHERN mug, please.

Have been starting my mornings with some train vids on the big screen via youtube. Being committed to building a new layout with broad curves, I finally pulled the trigger on a loco I have wanted for a long time. It will arrive one day next week.Cool

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee in my R&GV RR Mug please and thank you!

Bear, always glad to sit and chat with friends from all over the world!  Oh, yes!  There are many, many fine award winning red wines produced in the Finger Lakes region.  There are many Cabernets, Merlot, and Pinot Noir to choose from.  I am always glad to hear folks have visited my Photobucket account to check out my photos of the SLOW.  I am currently working on the NMRA AP Structures Certificate.  For that I have to build 12 structures, 6 of which need to earn a Merit Award (have two so far and a 3rd. ready for evaluation), 6 need to qualify as Scratch Build, the other 6 can be kits that have been detailed beyond just building the kit.  I have a couple of those already done as well.  Wood stove does feel good when it is 26°F outside!

Sun is trying to peek out from behind clouds here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Yesterday was a good day for solar for this time of year.  Made 10.2 kWh of electric power.  Would be more if the neighbor behind me over on the next street would remove an overgrown and leaning huge pine tree as a pre-emptive strike.  It is around 5' in circumference and is growing on the side of a hill.  You can see several places in the trunk where the tree has straightened itself out as it grew.  When that tree comes down in a wind storm it will take out the next door neighbors house, big time if the wind is right.  It also blocks my roof from getting sunshine this time of year.  A few weeks more and the angle will at least improve that situation.

Oh thumb report....  My thumb appears to be healing up well with no problems.  Stitches will come out late next week.  Amazing how many things we do every day that you need to use your thumb for....... Whistling

Got to go do another wash, have lunch, and head to my sister's house to feed Claude!

It's just after 10 AM and the plowman has made his first pass.  No, I'm not tilling my yard with oxen.  The snow started sometime overnight and we already have 5 or 6 inches on the ground, with the heavier snow yet to come.

This means no train show. as the snowfall predictions pretty much put the epicenter between my house and Springfield.  Bah.

Seriously, I have at least enough kits and materials already to keep me going for a year or two, so I'll just dive into the inventory.  I would like to get a nice, decent sized interlocking tower.  This will be for the staging yard throat, and it's close to the aisle.  I want big windows all around so I can detail the interior.  If anyone can suggest one, please do.

Good morning,

Taking Murray to the vet today to check his eyes. A cost of 120 dollars for a test if he has allergies. I was going to write is two weeks ago but it wasn't that important.

Sir Madog

Bear - it´s the tragedy of mankind - the inability to learn from history. Right now, we experience a strong limitation in the freedom of speech in my country. The press seems to be "in line" with the governement and anyone voicing a different opinion is called a Nazi. We had that over 80 years ago. I could go on, but that´s drifting into politics and I see Cousin Vinnie has already reason from his chair ... Anyway, I feel most uncomfortable in my country. I wish I were younger - I sure would leave this place.

Ulrich, I might have expected to hear something like that 80 years ago but not so much in 2015.  What is the issue(s) that would cause you to feel like that?

Zoe, I´ll go for a bowl of Galaxy´s Polish Verde Chili soup and a 7-up, please.

I made a mistake - I made the drawing of that little layout my desktop wallpaper. Now I see it every time I start my old `puter. I wish I could build it, but aside from the fact I don´t get the track here and code 55 doesn´t fit, I don´t have the funds to do it, even if I sell of all my other N scale stuff I just recently have purchased. When I close my eyes, I can see that Alco RS1 switching the grain elevator ...

It´s snowing lightly, but consequently. The land is covered with a still rather thin blanket of that white stuff, and there is more to come. For once, our weather guessers were right with their forecast!

Have a happy day!

Gidday All, Zoe, I would like a nice cold beer but as I know I’m not getting this weekend off, what makes it worse is that we have a public holiday on Monday, I’ll stick with a large iced green tea, though I’m not that sure if it’s the appropriate drink to sit around the stove having a good chinwag with Ray, (I hope he doesn’t think my unsubtle hints about viewing the SLOW are rude). I presume the Finger Lakes region produces a good red?

I’m not sure that “squeamish” is the word I would use Ulrich but I think I understand why you use it. For me the study of history not only involves dates and who did what to whom and why, but after a conversation with a returned serviceman who had fought his way up Italy in the 4th NZ Armoured Brigade, his comment to me that on his return to NZ he saw people here that would have become Nazis given the right circumstances, I also try to have a critical look of how we would/could have behaved. The sad thing is and I’ll use a universal we don’t seem to learn, or want to learn from past mistakes which is why I believe we need to be reminded of dark days, in the perhaps vain hope that one day we will gain the understanding to get on with our neighbours. I believe that the main concern for most folks, no matter where they are in the world, is that they have a roof over their head, something to eat, and a hope that their children have a chance of a better life.
Heck, way too much philosophy late on a Saturday night. I just hope I’ve explained myself.Huh?

Her-in-doors and I went to the local amateur “Shakespeare Outside” production of Othello the other evening which was held at the local marae at the lake front. Having had Shakespeare shoved down my throat as a compulsory part of the English curricula as a school boy, I had vowed and declared not to have anything to do with him again. It was only because my daughter, who is taking English as one of her degrees at university and is home on her summer break, had several speaking and non speaking extra roles, that I went. I’m glad I did, it was a pleasant 65 F evening, the grass was soft, the sunset brilliant and as night fell it was a good performance under the Southern Cross. In light of recent posts here in the Diner I did find it slightly ironic and amusing that the military characters in the tragedy wore surplus post WW2 German Army uniforms.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Goodnight and Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Today's Quote: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” Mark Twain

Galaxy, this is the best quote you have posted to date in my opinion. I often find myself biting my tongue with some of the things I read on the forum and find it better to not participate and keep my mouth/keyboard shut. Regardless of economic, political or religious circumstances, if one actually takes the time and gets to know people from any country or region of the world one soon realizes that everyone is the same despite cultural differences that exist. Love, hate, laugh, cry, we all do it. It is easy to pick out those of us that have never wandered far from home.

Keep up with the quotes and definitions, I do enjoy them.

Batman Brent, Geman Ulrich, NY Ray: I cannot claim credit for finding it, I watch nearly, if not all, the travel shows on PBS. I believe it is Joseph Rosendo's Travel Scope on which he follows every program in closing with the quote credited to MT and shortened to: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness". I looked it up and I like the whole quote version better. As I think it needs some "further explanation" for a few who may read it to actually "get it".

There are some people in certain states here who need to read/learn that quote for when visitors come-a-callin'! Just sayin'!

I have even lived in areas where some people's opinions are formed solely on what they "know" from their COUNTY only, as they have NEVER left that county, IS they even left their own city/town.

I am not exactly a well-travelled man, having lived in only 4 states and visited extensively only a few more, travelled through *many* states with stops to "get there", and only been in 2 countries, but I know when I get to an area-especially one that relies mostly on tourism-and find them rather "inhospitable" to tourists, I am amazed! I consider myself fortunate enough to have travelled as much as I have.

Ah, well, whatcha gonna do?

Brent: I am glad you and YGW enjoy the daily words and quotes. I get them in my email or *search them* {or is that research} on the web and in dicitonaries. It makes it worth it put them up to know someone enjoys them.

Garry: will put up a candle for you and wish you speedy recovery. I heard it is nasty. I am hoping WE avoid it ..especially since MY surgery is coming up, and it was postponed once due to me having another infection.

have a great night...

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo a JSTL and a Beer please. Hum, a tap from the Buick guy? He got is Buick started? Hmm

Down in the dumps today due to lack of funds. Sigh By the time I bought Sparkie food, paid Charter, Electric bill, my Meds, little food and gas I had to take $11.00 out of savings. Only thing I have going for me right now is the current gas price. Iam so broke I could not spend $9.00 on the two packs of Kadee # 5 couplers I could use.

Gary Hope you get over quicker than I did!

Train Front Had a PK1 F7A go belly up last night. Not sure what the deal is yet, it just wants to sit on the track with the headlight flashing? Hope just a simple decoder reset will take care of the problem.

Found the cause of the 2 (did not post about the second one) Old Dutch Hopper derailments. Found a Old Dutch Hopper toward the rear was picking something, and the truck is shot! Luickly one of the folks here from the site just sent me 5 fresh trucks. Yes Hope to have it back on the rails tonight.

Jeffrey Last Box Car. I got it on the rails just today and so far it seems to be pulling easily. I am not a big fan of Round House rollig stock but with a little work I like it. Installing PK2 33" wheels and cleaing the trucks have made it a free wheeler. I still need to patch the road name.

I have about 5 more rolling stock to get off the RIP track, then on to the engines! I sure hope I can get the PK2 E-6 B unit going!

  Later, Ken

Evening Railfans! Flo - put my usual in a togo cup. Cant stay but a moment.

I really just stopped by to tag a message on the community board -

Ken - sent you a PM bout your puter.

In General - Nadda. Except it is a gorgeous day finally! A Virginia Grey Day and they say with a smidgeon of rain - maybe. OH HAPPY DAY! (dancing a jig). Wish it were snow BUT, beggers cant be chosey. Be lucky to see a rain drop or two i bet.

RR - Mommy dearest has been on a cleaning binge of late. A little spring cleaning to aim against the doldrums of winter.... and having to talk to dad. Laugh  In this course she has come off of a few of those medium sized parts boxes. Of which i scarfed right up!

So of late, my RR'ing endeavors have been to finally go through my kadee collection and organize it into some kind of reasonable assemblance. Thanks mom.

Now if i could get off my lazy caboose and do those loco storage boxes! I think the reason i dont is that i would be taking them off the shelves. Putting them away. I like looking at them. It is a project that DOES need to get done.

Best wishes to those on the sick call list. Keep up the quotes - love Mark Twain.

Many of the finest human beings I have met and been honored to become friends with in this life are people who are very different from me....

I always get a kick out of the photo's/videos that Jason Shron (of Rapido) has on his website of him rolling up his sleeves and getting in there with the people that are building his products. It reminds me of times spent of sharing a meal or ceremony and other interactions with people I have met in the few third world (and first world) countries I have visited.

I am extremely fortunate for the friendships I have and I do have a large circle of friends. The vast majority are from countries other than Canada. I was shocked when two people came in from overseas for my surprise 50th birthday party. They stayed 1 night and we talked well into the night and they went home the next day. We have different views on many things, however we accept those differences as it is the things we have in common that is what makes our relationship special.

Rob - the Trix version is unfortunately no longer sold and I doubt you will find one on the "Bay". You should be safe with Roco. Roco is all DC or DCC, but you may have to install a ESU decoder (or Lenz, or Uhlenbrock), as most of the locos have an NEM interface. Makes installing a decoder really into a plug-and-play business. Take off the shell, get the jumper plug out and put the decoder in - presto! You are safe with Roco on code 83 rail, but code 70 might not work, as the wheels have a slightly bigger flange (NEM standards are a tad bigger than NMRA RP´s).

Afternoon diners.

On the train front my Conrail freight car fleet is almost done. I only need 12 cars left and no diesels yet. I'm not counting on pre-order CR and must little CR Quality. I haven't counted auto racks, coil cars and Bethgon coalporters. (By my standards.)

It's still a work in progress, I hope I finish it to the end.

Galaxy, this is the best quote you have posted to date in my opinion.

Amen to both Brent and Galaxy on that.  My sister has that quote posted on her refrigerator.  She has visited most every corner of the world in her quest to learn more about the arts from cultures around the world.  I like to say that Good people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, religions, and ethnic groups, from all over the world, just like bad people!  Many of the finest human beings I have met and been honored to become friends with in this life are people who are very different from me....

Already gotten a whole bunch of items checked off the absolutely must get done today list.  Dropped off Certificates, $$$, and permission to use sheets at 4 school buildings (would have been 5 but I got the secretary at the Middle School to agree to send the High School stuff down the hall to that office for me).  Was easy until I got the the Middle School.  Pushed the button to have the office unlock the door for me to get in, Didn't see the sign at "Check Point Charlie" just inside the door, so when I walked into the office (where Check Point Charlie is, BTW) I got yelled at for not properly identifying myself and going past the perimeter boundary.  Wonder I wasn't greeted by the Local Police and carted off to jail for the offense I guess.  I duly appologised and asked which shoe I needed to leave at the check point (that went over like a lead balloon) and asked to see the Secretary whom I mentioned by name.  I was then quized as to what my business was in the building and why I needed to see the Secretary.  The person at the counter went around the corner of the office and mentioned my name at which point I was allowed to be in the presence of the official Middle School Secretary (who has known me for over 20 years).  Gave her the materials, chatted for a minute, and left.  On the way out I politely mentioned that It might be good to put up signs that mention one has to be frisked and ID'd properly before entering the office....  That too went over like a lead balloon.  I also mentioned I taught in the Middle School for 19 years.  Then went over to the LHS to drop off a bunch of flyers for the Rochester Model Railroad Club advertising their Open House coming up in March, and then spent some $$$ on scenery supplies.  Then stopped in across the street at the Mother Earth Store to buy a lb. of Seneca Lake Dark Roast Coffee beans (yep it really does exist).  Last stop was to replentish my supply of pictures of dead presidents at the Credit Union.  Now I'm sitting here after eating lunch typing a reply for the forum...  Such an interesting life I lead......Whistling

We are under an official warning here in the Finger Lakes today about a major Solar Radiation Spill going on until sunset!!!  Huh?  Yep that means it is a nice day outside....  Little wheels down cellar near the inverter should be spinning around and around at the moment.

Have to take off to Canandaigua to feed my sister's kittie claude.  Catch you all later!

Brent - out of own experience, I can only agree to this quote. You may say I am a well-travelled man. I have been to Canada, the US, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil in the Americas, to Egypt and South Africa in Africa, to Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and China in Asia, to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Russia and Switzerland, as well as Turkey and Israel. I never did go to the Arab countries, though. Wherever I went, I met good people and bad people, but I was never ill-received in any country. The funny thing is that the mix of good and bad people seems to be the same in any of the countries I visited.

There's nothing wrong with code 55 track other than the height of the rail. Code 55 is more realistic. If you're planning on moving/ traveling a lot then code 80 is fine. Unless you already bought the track a head of time.

Mr. B - I have a suggestion and you can get to the show and ski ! Ski to the train show !!

Galaxy - I wish I was a little bit homunculus !

Ken - Looked at the Foc Valley eb site this morning and they have a B&O caboose listed

Jimmy - Pain an engine in Jeffs colors not rolling stock !

Garry - what is eating you ?

Went to the sawbones this morning and teh vampires drew a LOT of blood ! Seems something in my blood is at extremely low levels causing me to be tired a lot ??? Well now that they have drained me I am even more tired !

Calling for bad weather here this week end sounds like a great excuse to ignore work and stay home and model !
