Does anyone recognize this kit or know who makes it in HO? Or, maybe it isn't a kit??
-Bob
Life is what happens while you are making other plans!
It appears to be a Fine Scale Minaturers Kit.
They were located in Massachusetts, as I recall and each kit was a limited run.
Usually produced one or two kits per year.
If you have access to hard copies of MR from around 1973 through 1990, you would see their full page ad around the 1st of the year.
The January 1974 Issue of MR has a 2 stall roundhouse kit by Fine Scale, that retailed for around $39.00.
Bob,
Out of curiousity, I looked at many old & new kits from many sources and could not find it, unless I missed it or it was a scratch build or kit bash. Interesting building though. Something to search with:

Fine Scale Miniatures is still around.
That structure has more of a South River Modelworks look to it, but I don't see it listed. I don't see it in the list of FSM kits, and I checked a few others like Bar Mills, Sheepscot, Builders in Scale, and FOS.

Modeling the Reading Railroad in the 1950's

Can't tell from the pics but if those are shingles, then this was scratch, based this on the type of shingle.
It looks familiar. Wonder if it has been kitbashed, which is causing the varried responses.
Have fun,
Richard
I saved the photos from some source on the internet but it has been a few years. I normally list the mfg or source when I save them, but not this time? I finally drew the plans for it and started to scratch built from styrene and planned to use cedar shingle from a couple of sources and realized how much it was going to cost: so, I thought it might be cheaper to buy the kit, but as you all can see I couldn't find a kit. I tried all the sources mentioned in the replies myself before posting, hoping someone would recognize it. I held off ordering the shingle/shakes as well as windows/doors until I was sure there wasn't a kit. Guess I can go ahead with the scratch plan. Thanks for all the response and your efforts to locate it. I will post pics when finished.

If it actually was a kit, you can be certain that someone will let you know approximately 1 hour after you post the picture of your scratchbuilt model.
There is a 3D model made of it as well:

What is a 3D model? Are not all models 3D? Too bad it doesn't say who made the kit.
Yeah, I guess it will become available as soon as the paint dries! I like what they did with the 'well worn' version though. Keep the info coming, maybe I can hold off until after Christmas on the scratch building. Just got my Soundtraxx Soundcar decoder, so I have an immediate project that requires my attention, but the fish building is still on my work bench in the 'next' slot.
Bob I don't know who made it but with the limited number of angles I would say it would be a pretty straight forward building to scratch build. If it had of been a fsm kit would it not have been littered with castings?

Present Layout progress
http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/11/p/290127/3372174.aspx#3372174
I did a little mockup of the structure to see how it would 'place' on the layout and then started a final model. I drew the plans in my CAD and printed out full HO scale sheets. I haven't ordered the windows and roofing/siding yet but that will come soon. Just wanted to update what I have done so far. Looking forward to the finished model on the layout next to my lighthouse.
Although I wasn't able to find it in their current or past offerings, it looks a lot like products from Rusty Stumps, especially their corner moldings:http://www.rustystumps.com/proddetail.asp?prod=K4018
Just to update on the progress of the build: I have the 'Fish Building' well on it's way to completion but have run out of the cedar shake/shingle (siding) and have to wait for the reorder to come in. I have another brand of cedar roof shingle on order as well and when it all comes in I can continue and finish the model. I plan to paint/stain it to look like the original model photos I posted. The siding is applied in single row strips and is very tedious but rewarding when you see the results.
Lookin good! Keep us appraised. Be curious to see how close you can come to the original pictures.

It looks very good. What are the dimensions you went with?

farrellaa wickman It looks very good. What are the dimensions you went with? The main building is 4"wide x 3" deep and 4.12" high. The lean-to on the right end is 1.7" x 2.45" deep. If you or anyone wants the drawings I made let me know, they are in CorelDraw and can be saved as pdf files. -Bob

Looks quite a bit larger than those dimensions which is a good thing. I would appreciate the drawing please.
I would also appreciate having the drawings. Can you post them in this forum or do you need to send them via email?

These are jpeg files, the only ones I could get uploaded to Photobucket. If you want pdf files I would have to email them to you. Send me a pm with your emails and I will send the pdf files.
Thanks for the drawings.
wickman Thanks for the drawings.
Well, I am about 95% finished with my scratch built version of the structure I originally posted about. Never found out who made the kit, unless it was scratch built too. I am waiting for some of the small detail parts and I will be ready to put this little beauty on my layout. Thought I would post some photos of what it looks like now. I may lighten the roof color a little, but the photos are a little darker than it really is.
Bob
That's really nicely done! Where did you get the cedar shake sides for the walls?
I do agree that the weathering on the roof could be toned down a wee bit, and, if I can suggest, add a few rust stains coming from the stove pipe and vent stack, and maybe the chimney flashing. I hope you don't think that I am being overly critical. That is not my intent. You have done a great job!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Bravo! Very well executed. That building looks like it has weathered quite a few coastal storms.
I can hear the surf and the seagulls now...
Thanks for sharing, Ed

Thanks for the comments and no I don't think you are overly critical. I just added the stove pipe and vent stack yesterday (last details added) and did plan to weather them on my next session.
The cedar shakes are from B.T.S. and are absolutely great as they are laser cut paper with adhesive backing. I used them for the siding and roof. They are just a tedious task and took more time than the rest of the build process, but well worth it. I have use other brands that have to be glued on and they are really a p.i.a.
I am waiting for the roof details (lightning rod finials) and seagulls to come in so I can finish it.

The seagulls must be near you (if you can hear them) because I ordered them on Saturday and they haven't arrived yet? Model Tech Studios makes a lot of marine details and I can't wait for them to get here. Thanks for the kind comments. I will post final photos when I finish the model.
