Chuck, there's a difference between a "has been" and a "never was". I think the Astro's day will come sooner rather than later. Think of it this way, the Red Sox futility is double the length of the Astro's existance. Beside, the Angels proved that it could be done a couple years ago.

The Red Sox dilema: as much as they want to win it all, winning destroys their charm.
Hmmmmmmmm........ tough choice. Maybe they should just win this one, then they can start a new streak.[swg]

By the way, that thing with Schilling gives new meaning to the term Red Sox. Ewwww[xx(]

Dead Man Pitching

NEW YORK (AP) — Somewhere on a slab in Boston is a citizen of Red Sox Nation who actually gave his body to the cause.

With the team's future increasingly dependent on Curt Schilling's (search) right leg, doctors decided to try an apparently unprecedented procedure to keep a tendon from slipping around in his ankle. But first, they wanted to test it out.

So they used a cadaver. No way to know if it was a Red Sox (search) fan.

"We were going to try to do everything we could to try to stabilize the tendon," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said Wednesday night before Game 7 of the AL championship series. "We were only going to do it as a last-ditch effort."

The Red Sox wound up winning the playoffs Wednesday night against their rivals, the New York Yankees (search), and will head to the World Series for the first time since 1986. The Boston team hasn't won the baseball championship since 1918.

Schilling hurt the ankle near the end of the regular season and tried to pitch with the injury for Game 1 of the playoff series against the Yankees. Unable to push off the mound with full force, he allowed six runs in three innings — his worst postseason performance since 1993.

The Red Sox lost the game 10-7 and went on to fall behind 3-0 in the best-of-seven series. They won the next two to stay alive in the series, but they used every available pitcher in the process and found themselves needing Schilling again.

The Red Sox training staff thought of various ways to keep the tendon in place. Special high-top shoes didn't work, and they hit upon the idea of sewing skin in Schilling's leg to the tissue underneath, creating a wall that would keep the tendon in place.

"It seems extreme. We couldn't find a case of it ever being done before," Epstein said. "It was the best way to allow him to have his normal mechanics."

Schilling had three stitches put in at about 2 p.m. on Monday, about 90 minutes before he tested his ankle on the bullpen mound in Fenway Park (search).

"If it didn't work, he's in the same situation he was before," manager Terry Francona said. "We went out to the bullpen, he did pretty well without it. ... Schill kind of bought off on it, and they did it a day early to see if he could get used to it and let him get comfortable with it. And it certainly seemed to do the trick."

Although there was some fluid and blood leaking through Schilling's sock on Tuesday night, Epstein could see after the first pitch that Schilling was throwing like normal.

The sutures were taken out after the game to avoid infection; if Schilling pitches again, they would be put back in. Epstein said there was no problem repeating the procedure a couple of more times.

"We only have one more series," he said. "People think it's reasonable to do it a couple more times."

I found this news story. Explains the blood on Schillings sock. Ewwwwww, talk about taking one for the team. [swg]

This is going to be a tough World Series for me. I would love to see the Sox break the "curse," but being from central MO I cannot root against my hometown Royals or my wife's hometown Cardinals. To all those Boston fans out there, I feel your pain and I sympathize, but . . . GO CARDS!!!

All I can say is:

Go Cards!

As a die-hard Giants fan, I liked watching the Cardinals eliminate the Dodgers (the Giants' hated rival) in the NLDS, so that's why I'm rooting for the Cardinals in the World Series. That, and because I like the NL more than the AL. But that's a discussion for another forum somewhere else.
huh?

Thank you. That shows some class, and I appreciate it.

I don't know why, but this death has gotten to me. I didn't know her or anyone involved, but still... Maybe because I went to college in Boston not all that long ago, maybe because I play paint ball and have been hit in the goggles, maybe because I was so happy the Sox finally beat the Yanks and now it all seems trite, I dunno. I mean, people die everyday for the most ridiculous of reasons, but to be killed by a suped-up paint ball gun fired by a SWAT team member when one is only standing around (according to reports)... Man, I don't know what to say...

Even worse, IMHO, is the thread title. It isn't funny, and it's wildly inappropriate now, as a 21-year old woman, Victoria Snelgrove from Emerson College, was killed by the Boston Police Dept. during the after game "celebrations". In January, another college student was killed when a drunken fan tried to drive out of a crowd of people after the Patriots won the Super Bowl, so yes, indeed, the death toll is rising in Boston.

Thanks for the support from across the pond. Well the "Posting Police" may yet succeed in getting this thread "Banned in Boston" here on MR too.

Meanwhile, I and the rest of the Red Sox fans should be simply savoring the moment while waiting for "The Curse" to kick in and snatch another potential World Series title away. The Cardinals have done it to us twice in the past. History tends to repeat itself.

We played the Cardinals in 1946. The series went to a seventh and deciding game. Let Dan Shaughnessy tell you 'the rest of the story'............

"...but in 1946 the Red Sox still were expected to win the Big One. These Red Sox were the heirs of that first generation of world champions and there was no reason to expect anything would be different this time around. The public perception was that the Sox were unbeatable. Fortified by Mssrs. Williams, Doerr, Pesky, DiMaggio, and a raft of young arms, the Yawkey Red Sox appeared to be on the threshold of a decade of dominance. Game 7 of the 1946 Series was to be the first of many triumphs as the Red Sox returned to their rightful place atop the American League.

All of the above was shattered by the ghastly events of Game 7, and since this day the legacy of the Red Sox has been that of the underachieving loser. The Red Sox are usually competitive, sometimes good enough to make it to the postseason, but in the end they will always let you down. Tuesday, October 15, 1946, was the turning point. This was the first time the Red Sox took their fans to the edge, then failed." (1)

I've only been to Fenway once myself. I've also been to Yankee's once.[;)]

I'm glad to see that people are enjoying this very much "off topic" topic. It should get even more interesting once the World Series starts Saturday.

I really think Boston will finally do it this time. They have home field advantage, and they won't have to deal with New York anymore. Been there done that!!![swg]

"Experts"??? Nonsense! "The Curse" involves the World series, not just the pennant. Although it is a little known corollary of the curse that breaking it involves not just winning the World Series, but going through the Yankees to get there. So they're on the right track. Let's just hope the light they see at the end of this long tunnel isn't an oncoming train.

I still think it would be easier and more efficient to break the curse by digging up the Babe's remains and formally apologizing to them. [:D]

By the way, Elliot, congrats on having your new thread appear on the "Innappropriate Threads" listing. You scored twice. Not only is your thread inappropriate for this board, but your title is misleading. Sounds to me like sour grapes, maybe the guy is a disgruntled Yankee fan............ [(-D]

I had no idea that the Dutch were that interested in baseball. Do you follow the North American pro game at all, or just like to play? I think since baseball was added to the Olympics, more people around the world have taken notice. My regular team, the Minnesota Twins, actually have the first Australian pitching for them. Grant Ballfour did pretty well this year.

By the way, until you mentioned Haarlem (we Americans dropped one of the "a"s out of our spelling) it had completely slipped my mind that New York was originally called New Amsterdam.[swg]

Antonio, the joke is that some fans have lived entire lives waiting to see the Red Sox win the World Series. Since the last time it happened was in 1918, only a person around the age of 90 might actually remember.

There is this documentary called The Curse Of The Bambino, narrated by Ben Aflek, chronicling the futility of the team. In that show, the hypothetical situation of, what would happen if they ever won it all, was raised. The tongue in cheek conclusion was, that the death toll would be astronomical!!!

I expect that in the next day or two, HBO will air the show a few times, in light of the current situation. If you get a chance to watch it, please take the time, it is an absolute riot.

Many of the experts are starting to say that the curse has been reversed, since they beat the Yankees in such dramatic fashion. But others say that they must also win the World Series for it to truely be broken.

So to those Red Sox fans, who may be faint of heart, take your medication!!! I promise you that Doug Mientkiewicz will not repeat the error of Bill Buckner. I sincerely believe that this is the year, and next year we will all be Cubs fans.[swg]

The ONLY way the Sox won was to put a hit on all
the Yanks team. That's how the death toll rises in
Boston AND New York.

Actually I think Antonio has a good point, Elliot, you might want to consider revising the thread title, although probably by now most of the regular posters and lurkers have already opened it and seen what it's about.

Having said that, it was an incredible four game run by the Red Sox. I've lived and died with those dudes all my life and I have to say that this was their finest hour. [^] No matter what happens in the series, they did themselves proud by coming back from 3 down in the series, especially after the humiliating loss on Saturday. [tup]

Great, gutty performances by Schilling and Lowe. Great bullpen support (got to question the move of putting in Pedro as a reliever last night, though [%-)] ). And Damon and Bellhorn finally coming through with their bats, after all the critics were calling for Francona to revise the lineup. Ortiz, as series MVP, could probably get himself elected mayor in Boston right now.

I will say, that even when they were leading 8-1, I was nervous. A true Red Sox fan knows that disaster always lurks just around the corner. He knows that no lead is safe. The announcers kept on saying stuff like "...only 4 outs away from a trip to the World Series..'" and I'm sitting there remembering when they were only one strike away from winning the World Series in '86, and wanting them to just shut up about it.

Anyways, we've got a couple of days to savor the sweet taste of victory before they have to see how they'll do in the series. My heart needs the rest, and I could do with a bit more sleep.

Later

Ed

Hello BigBoy,

I just got back on as this forum's website link was "down" for about an hour here in Tampa.

Well, I get back on it.......................and on the front page I see "Death toll rises.......

My friend, you got me good!!!!!!! [:p][:p][:p][:p][:0]

For a few seconds my heart beat rapidly as I hurriedly clicked the mouse. This may sound nutty but I was thinking "Oh no! Another a terrorist attack!" (9/11/01 images are etched in my memory). And since Boston is a major metro area, well you get the picture.

I'm very glad that it was about the Sox! I'm a New Yorker but I'm happy for them. [;)]

But I just wanted to point out that this is a good example of the incredible impact words can have![:p][:0][:D]

Cheers!
