Walthers Proto wish list: diesel locomotives

  I was just thinking how nice it woujld be if Walthers came out with a few diesel locomotives never offered in their proto or mainline series before. Here is my wishlish for Walthers. Union Pacific SW10, EMD BL2, ALCO T-6, RSD-1, MRS-1, RS3M "Dewitt" version, hammerhead RS3, Davenport 44 tonner, Whitcombe 44 tonner, Lima 1200 hp switcher, Illinois Central SW14, GP8, GP10. Going by number of engines produced commercially, the engines i see perhaps being produced in HO scale by walthers would be RSD-1 (144 made), Illinois Central GP8 (111), GP10 (76), and GP11 (54), Seaborad Coast Line GP16 (155), Union Pacific SW10 (75), and ALCO MRS-1 (83).

I'd REALLY like to see them re-issue the P2K Alco F1's in the several SP&S paint schemes.

  The BL2 was one if the FIRST engines Life-Like did in the Proto 2000 series.  Many of the others you list are railroad specific rebuilds.  Even the IC GP8/GP10's varied quite a bit in details as the rebuild program evolved.  Most RSD1's were built in WWII for the US Army and would up in service on the Trans-Iranian Railway.  Some copies were built after WWII for Mexican service.

  The output of P2K models under Walthers has nevewr been close to what was produced by Life-Like in the 1990's.  Life-Like over produced and the models were on clearence for a number of years(usually about $40 for a GP).  With the slow economy, Walthers have been slow to even rerun a lot of the models, and in no where near all of the paint schemes that were available  back then.

The Walthers SW1 looks good & has had good reviews.  It's not an engine that is really important to me personally, but I know a lot of modelers are interested.  It represents the early SW1, but I'll bet a lot of folks would like to see the later version.

For own narrow interests, I'd like to see the FM H20-44 end-cab 2000 hp road switcher as used by UP, PRR, NYC, and others.  It's never been available in a plastic HO version from any source.   If Walthers won't produce it, then SOMEBODY ought to.

I second this, with DCC friendly(like Kato style friendly) and in N scale. I'd also like to see Walther's run C424's and 425's in SP&S colors in N scale. Ones that aren't of the canadian style tooling but actual US style units with recessed rear numberboards.

SP&S modeler, 1960's give or take a decade or two for some equipment.

Intermountain is doing the IC GP8/GP10 and the SCL/SBD GP16.

I am suprised they haven't re-released the GP18, BL2, FAs, and the other switchers that Proto 2000 made.

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I second the motions.....and add U36B to the list, although if they don't announce it soon I swear I'll paint one of my Gevo's in an Auto-Train fantasy scheme!!

I could see Bachmann making a Whitcomb 44-tonner, rather than Walthers-- it would be consistent with their other small power. The Davenport 44-tonner would be pretty cool, too. Both would support small-space layouts well.

I find Lima's smaller LS-750s and LS-800s fascinating, completely out of proportion to the number made and to my inability to use them with my chosen prototype.

What I'd most like to see somebody make now would be a U25B built to current detail standards.

I'd like to see a B30-7A(B) unit. lol Perhaps a C415 would be more sellable

My list might include;

1) a new-production of the P2K SW9 in UP colors, with DCC and/or sound

2) new production of SD7s or SD9s in CB&Q "blackbird" paint scheme with full DCC/Sound

3) upgrading the old P2K PA/PB to be compatible to DCC and sound, in UP colors

4) an all-new C44-9W with "modern" features missing on the Athearn and Kato models.  BNSF owns thousands of them but the currently available units are only applicable to the first one or two hundred without rebuilding.  MTH is tooling up for one, but MTH has such HORRIBLE customer service that I would buy from ANYONE but them. 

5) SDP40 - low production numbers but it shares a lot of components with the SD45 already produced by Walthers/Proto

Oh, and besides diesels we badly need a "Harriman" 2-8-0 steam locomotive.

I'm thinkin' an SD40 is closer to the SDP40.  And "we all know" that Athearn will be re-doing their SD40.  And if they don't also do the SDP40, I'll.......just.........sulk......a lot!  And make cranky emanations, too.

Actually, the Bachmann 2-8-0, which has been popular for several years, is based on a Harriman design.  the drivers are a bit large, as most of the Harrimans used 57" diameter, and that sandbox is all wrong.  The Baker valve gear is  modern touch that was not present on most Harrimans.   Most Harrimans also used Vanderbilt tenders like the one formerly made by MDC.  Change those features and you'll have a Harrimnan 2-8-0.
