Good Morning!

I am up earlier than usual. I have to take the car to town to get the tires changed. Have to be there at 8am, but I don´t like to rush, so better to get up early and have a slow start into the day.

cudaken
Ulrich, why did sound gruff to you?

Ken - this may be a cultural issue. You just wrote "Morning" - in my language we always say "Guten Morgen", leaving out the "Guten" is an indication one may not be feeling up to par. Btw, that foam block is the culprit. It made the knife slip and slice through my finger tip.

Got to go to the home improvement store after getting the tires changed. My order of stripwood included rods with a wrong diameter. I am not going to return them, as the postage would exceed the value of them. The vendor will credit the amount to my account - for the next purchase.

Have a good one!

Well, I accomplished my stated purpose today which was refurbishing the memory card. I also chased down a problem in a disk drive. Turned out to be a simple loose connection. Turned out to be a simple loose connection.  Other than that I surfed around on the net a bit and watched some TV.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

I was right, MOH is still sleeping. I ate dinner, and went an joined for aobut 2 hours, until another weird dream woke me. I have been having a LOT of those lately. This time I was "living" with a faimily in  a ramshackle house and I offered to build a garage on my credit card for them as The house was RIKETY. Built using Pallets as wood joints!

I tried something else. I found the computer mags reference to IE patch. Didn't know if it was "THE ONE" and I think our AOL is set to run on IE. WE also have google chrome on here. It came up with "error 2738" and couldn't complete. I tried to find a IE reference to "error 2738" but could not. So I don't think idea worked. I am not sure if it is "THE PATCH" that fixes the securtiy problem that can actually allow some scheister through an opening take control of your computer and operate it. If you haven't heard on the news!

Alos FINALLY got a lengthy email from AOL> Seems they have uncoved that people have hacked the AOL system and can access accounts and have been "spoof-mailing" from AOL memeber's accounts emails. change passwords is their answer. WELL, NO DUH! I called them THREE TIMES about 2 months ago to tell them SOMEONE WAS ACCESSSING MY ACCOUNT FROM ANOTHER COMPUTER. I get a notice of that, and BOOTED off AOL when I tried to get on! Those Idiots in India who handle AOl's problems had NO IDEA to WHAT I WAS REFERRING! I spelled it out  in PLAIN ENGLISH for them! SOMEONE WAS USING MY ACCOUNT AND IT WASN'T ME! OR MOH! THEn I found out AOL no longer has 24 hour service OR that service is now no longer open on weekends! I t was a Saturday the first time it happened, so I waited til MOnday to report it. I changed all my passwords and Had MOH {master accoutn} change them too! {The master screen name can change all passowrds- a feature I don't like, and any computer savy person who gets access to the master screenname's info can access ANYBODY ELSES!} Very next day, SOMeone was still acccessing my acct!No ONe else has access to our aol account I also noticed if I sent an email to myself for instance,, or any email for that matter, that It would stall out saying "you must wait for the previous email to be sent". I had sent NO such thing! I knew somone was emailing off my account!!!. AGAIN, DID THEY LISTEN? NO, they still claimed to have NO IDEA what I was talking about!. NOW they decide to notify people, after a lot of damage has been done, I am sure!

That is another reason why I DON'T DO any online banking or other financial stuff on the comuter. Or keep ANY records of any kind on it!

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer Pleases, and I will take a Shake and Bake Chicken Thigh and fried potatoes.

Weather today was pretty good concerting it was supposed to storm all say. Got the needed paper work scanned and printed for the attorney and in the mail box. That was the number one goal. Went on a trash run, bought Sue some pancakes. That leaves me $3.27 for gas the next today’s and I down to 45 miles.

Cute Sparkie Story. Yesterday I had to sew up my Holies, that what I call my around the house sweat pants. Caboose of them where falling apart and my wife would not wash them because she thought they would fall apart in the washer. So I decided to sew them up. Then along came Sparkie, at first he thinks I have food. (He gets no table food, but he gets a dog treat when I eat) He finally figured out I was not eating, so what does he do? He gets up on the love seat and sat there 15 minutes watching me sew up the sweat pants?

Galaxy, boy I had a weird dream last night as well! I dreamed I was trying to build a Real House from Lego Blocks! At one point in the dream I was trying to figurer out how big of a air gap I need to put in insulation?

Far as stoves go, I like gas my self. I have lived here for 20 years and I need the fourth stove. The electronic start for the oven went bad on the current one. Replacement is or was around $150.00 and with it being Gas no way the other half would let me install it! Hum, yet I took it out? So I just bought her a larger toaster oven and she happy. Up side to me? No burned no Burned Up Turkeys For Thanksgiving!

Sir Madog
Ken seems to be a little gruff this morning Smile, Wink & Grin

Ulrich, why did sound gruff to you? Just had a few things to do, like taking a nap!  Layout is looking very nice! But I am confused? You said “Here is the culprit” then you showed foam? So how did the foam cut you?

Terry, have you tried to clean the rail joiners where the train gets slow? I think the stuff I used is call CR 12, can is out in the Road Runner. Only real tip I can give you is if the solder joint looks dull, it is not a good solder joint. A good joint should have a shine to it.

On a side note, does anyone here besides me watch “Time Team” on U tube? If you like history it a pretty good show!

Will drop by before work Wednesday.

 Ken

Afternoon folks!

I've been in Rochester for meetings most all day.  Actually both meetings went very well.  My Division will be hosting a Regional Convention next year, and I met with all my officers and another person who is an appointed member to see what I should and should not announce at this years Regional Convention which is this weekend....  The second meeting was actually just getting together with an old friend of mine who is advising me on a project.  Got to see his beautiful new layout.  He says this one is the last he is going to do and since he is in his 80s, he may be right...  This gentleman will have his layout finished to be on the tour for our convention in 2015.

Cold, dark, and gloomy all day here in the Finger Lakes Region.  High today got all the way up to 53°F.  been having a good 20+mph wind all day too.  Won't break last yearts total for electric this month.  It will probably be about 30kWh less than last year.

Tips, tricks and techniques from you experts would be GREATLY appreiciated!! .... Pics would be great!

Terry how about a couple videos I did a few years back?  These are clips from a soldering clinic I did for my Division of the NMRA.  By the way, for about 90% of my hobby work, I use a 25w Weller Soldering Iron.  I also have a couple larger one I use when appropiate  (Building Fast Tracks Turnouts, for instance) but larger doesn't really mean better in a lot of cases.  You need to have the right amount of heat and get it where you want it quickly so you don't melt rails and such.  I learned this method from an electroinics repairman who learned it from his father who learned it in the US Air Force.  Works great and you will not have a cold solder joint.  When the solder flows, you are done!

Galaxy, since I know your home town, with IBM et al, I have to agree with your evaluation of the place...Whistling  It was, however a step up from Waverly though!WhistlingLaugh

I catch up to all of you a bit later.  Need to stir the speghetti sauce on the stove....

Remember the memory card I mentioned this morning? Got that sorted out. It had five bad RAM chips on it. A simple RAM scan told me which ones to pull. Photo #1 shows the card with these chips removed. Photo #2 shows the same card with an end label and five sixteen pin Eproms programmed as RAM chips and so labeled. It's been thoroughly tested and checks out as good. I wouldn't dream of selling such a card as this but for my personal use it's acceptable.

No, that is not the nightmare I had. Although, I HAVE had something like that about high school, more than once! Actually the nightmare {that continued} was about being left behind when I was with my brother on a few excursions! Since My brother has gone the way of the dodo bird, that must have something to do with it. Today's "bad dream" was about my father having a heart attack and me travelling home to an abandoned house on a 4 wheeled disability scooter! I am not ready for that yet! I still get by with a cane!

Yes, MOH came home between clients, but had to cancel the later one as the rain has brought pain to the degenerating hip that monday's MRI will tell us more about. SO a narcotic pain reliever and MOh is off to bed form 2pm probably until 8pm! I laid down too and got a whole 'nother 45mins sleeep...until AARP called to make sure I got my insurance card and "welcome package". I should have left the phone in the LR...WE have NO PHONE in the BR ON PURPOSE! BUt some days we have to have it in case of important calls, so we take it with us. My back gives me troubles on rainy days too. Same when winter snows move in too, we can forecast the weather by my back and hip, sometimes a migraine and MOH's hip and the finger MOh had a cyst removed from.

MOH could be in a world of hurt all week, but I think will survive. WHen MOh works at the grocery for hours on the weekend, the longer the hours {16 this weekend} usually means cancelling a client somewhere on Monday or Tuesday as the hip causes grief. I think there may be a connection? Only supposed to have no more than 6 hours a day and no more than one day a weekend every other weekend so MOH has at least one complete day off a week-or at least once every other weekend. at 55, MOH is no spring chicken anymore and that degenerating hip is causing a lot of grief. Otherwise MOH is relatviely healthy.

Won't get into too much more trouble today, running out of day. Dinner will be by myself with MOH picking up a plate later that I leave in the fridge. I will probably be bcak napping when MOH awakens again! Thats how it is with a heavy duty pain killer on board!

I am afraid if I sleep too much more, I won't sleep again tonight. so I will stay awake til after dinner. Tehn I can crash if My body wants.

have a good night.

Having breaded fried boneless pork as I guess I won't try to bake them off since the oven is giving me troubles.. Probably left over flavored noodles for MOH and green beans. The broccoli yesterday was NOT good on my still sensitive system!

Good Tuesday afternoon, Diners. 32f and....... snowing. Snowing hard. Got around 2" so far. I hate this.

I broke down and bought a soldering iron. I need to add feeders here and there. I used Atlas terminal rail joiners on about 90% of the layout , but not enough of them. There's some spots where trains will slow down, even with the Atlas stuff every other joint( 1 per 6' of track). It is a very large layout.I have never soldered before. So....

Tips, tricks and techniques from you experts would be GREATLY appreiciated!!

I have a Weller 25 watt iron. Rosin flux core solder. 20ga. solid doorbell wire. I know to strip and bend the wire to the rail, use a heatsink, etc. I need to know how long and where to hold the tip of the iron, what size tip to use( have a half-dozen sizes), stuff you guys probably take for granted.Embarrassed

Complete soldering noob. Pics would be great!

Thanks in advance!

galaxy - Was it the nightmare about showing up for a test and realizing you hadn't studied for it, or realizing the term was almost over and you'd skipped a class completely?  I had one of those a few months ago.  I "realized" I wasn't going to graduate, but then, I realized I was 67 years old and it no longer mattered.  I was going to retire, and I didn't need that degree anymore.  Since then, well, that nightmare seems to be "retired" as well.

Tom - My daily commute is 20 minutes in the morning, and about 30 on the way home.  Most of that is what a skiing friend calls "black diamond driving," demanding a lot of attention, going fast under treacherous conditions.  So, I'm not paying much attention to the sound system anyway.  When the two of us take a long road trip, like the three hours it takes to get the mountains for skiing, we like a "book on disk" to listen to.  That passes the time better than music for us.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

I laid down for a nap at 9:15. It lasted as long as it took to fall asleep, go inot REM and start dreaming, only to have it turn in to a nightmare, a continuation theme of last night's nightmare that woke me at 3:15 AM. I can force myslef awake out of them, but usually cannot "change" the theme of them while sleeping. SO it lasted a whole 45 mins! I will try again later.

It is only 45F here and rain should be starting sometime like NOW. It iwll move in with thunderstorms overnight, Just watch the power go out. It is supposed to rain for the next 7 days! They say the creeks, streams and rivers WILL Get high, but "expect no widespread flooding"..YEah right! In a matter of about 4 hours with flash flooding we had the devasting flood of Sept.'11 happen! People around here are nervous everythime it rains now..that was the thrid flood in just 6 years.

I was jsut commenting to MOH the other day that I wondered what happened to all the Flood money the Fed govt nad State govt passed out around here after the '11 flood? Well, they finally announced they are tearing down some of the buy-out properties from the flood in the city. About time. BUt I still wonder what happened to other funds? like for extending the height of hte flood retianing walls that failed? all the "studies" paid for  that they did have shown is the new properties now in the flood plain, might be in the flood plain, or near the flood plain, that now have to pay exhorbitant flood insurance rates. Naturally! the insurance companies cannot do that on thier own?

MOH may be home between clients today. Will be in the small town that is our county seat. It has a pop. of about 5K. MOH has about 1:45 between the two clients, and has complained "there is NOTHING to do in that town"..Tell me about it! I grew up there! It was a nice little town, but MOH grew up here in the fringes of the city and had access to the bus system so had things to go and do. WE did not have such things, and unless you could drive, had a car or were allowed to drive the 20 miles to get to the city, you were out of luck after 5PM! Home and TV-four channels oNLY- were your options! If you had Boy SCouts or Wed evening Church service, that was about it. If we got home at the wrong time of day, we had to wait for the cows to cross the road at milking time! {or wait for the frequent trains to go by..that was fun!}. But,  IBM had a plant there , and my father was lucky to have a steady job there all his working career.

well, I have a load of laundry going when done i may try again to sleep-hopefully without a nightmare going!

Nothing On TV right now either. SUcks! we have like 300 channels with NOTHING on! Maybe time to hit the dishes and get them done...

Mister Beasley - That's one of the reasons I subscribed to satellite radio in the car. I have a nice selection of music era's to choose from. The 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s. Plus there is "Old Time Radio" which we often listen to while railfanning. You can't beat Fibber McKee & Molley, Baby Snooks, Jack Benny, Phil Harris, etc. And on trips, I don't have to spend hours searching for a station that's worth listening to.

Jimmy - Glad you like your new job. If you don't mind a tip from an old timer, go out of your way and always try to do a little extra. Trust me, it will be noticed and at some point will make a difference.

Still trying to make up my mind if I should buy the new camera or not. I have no idea why I'm having such a hard time with this. Guess it's because I would like to have it, but in all honesty, it's a really expensive toy. We have to run some errands tomorrow, so I know the wife will be urging me to stop and get it. NOTE: It's sometimes easier just to do what she wants...

Getting a lot of rain here, but just a nice steady rain, no storms. Best wishes to those who are being battered about by Mother Nature.

Taped it up and went to see our doc. You know what he did? He used super glue to fix it - I could have done it myself!

I have done that myself. Super glue is handy stuff to have around.

Good Afternoon!

Janie, lots of coffee and something sweet to comfort me, please.

Got a nasty cut in my finger tip as I was cutting foam for the foundations of the light house. I was bleeding from it like mad and left stains of blood on the floor while I was rushing to the bathroom. Taped it up and went to see our doc. You know what he did? He used super glue to fix it - I could have done it myself! I now hurts like (beep, expletive - deleted).

That was the end of my today´s MRRing activities.

Here is the culprit:

The sides will be covered with a layer of DAS modeling clay, and engraved, once the clay has dried.

Tomorrow, I will have to get up in the wee hours of the day. I´ve got an appointment to get my tires changed. At 24°C, it is a little too warm to be still driving around with winter tires.

Good morning. It's 70° with 100% humidity and fog. The high will be 82° and cloudy. Wind will shift northwest in the afternoon.
Morning:    Afternoon:

I may be doing some work on a memory expansion card this afternoon. It's needed for one of the older IIe's to upgrade it from 64k to 128k. Besides the II+ compatible I'm tinkering with it's the only system that's still 64k.

So far I have no other plans.

took the van in for inspection, change the left turn signal and new wiper blades. Also needed a FEA. I knew thta was coming and rather than tear up the new tires I just bought I had it done now. I bought the "lifetime alignment" SO I should neve have to pay for again. With the roads around here, there is no sense in getting it done after Novemeber or before April!

Then I get home and the manager calls me to say the tech actually never put the new blades on! Unless i am out later today I will get that done tomorrow. Its an easy thing  to do, but I have to figit with them, and but while i have it in there, I have them change them so I know it got done!

I had breakfast at 4:30  and now a mid-morning snack, I think Lunch will be easy too. So my system is healing! I can actually look forward to lunch without wanting to vomit!

I did sleep fairly well las tnight, just not long enough. I may try to take another nap now that I am home for the day.

I don't know what trouble i will get into, dishes and 1 load of laundry await me, then I supppose I could vacuum. SOme days are harder than outhers to get into trouble!

have a great day!

Good morning - cold and raw here.  It's 42 degrees F out, and will not be getting much warmer.  C'mon.  May is in 2 days, and we're still getting this?

My wife an sister are off on their Irish adventure.  They let her know that the flight was running late.  That was actually better, as it let the traffic calm down before we had to leave for the airport.  We have a convenient bus from out here in the burbs into the airport, so I took her there.  Penny is a nervous wreck when she travels, and is always late.  We got to the bus station with only 3 minutes to spare, instead of the 15 minutes I had planned.  Oh, well.  I got no frantic calls from the airport, so I guess she had her passport with her...

My car has an FM radio and a CD player.  That's all I need.  The radio is good enough, most of the time.  Unfortunately, the definition of "oldies" has changed over the years, so instead of the Drifters, Coasters and other groups of my youth, we get Aerosmith and Bon Jovi, which I think of as "loud music for children."  Fortunately, there is a genuine oldies channel on the TV cable, so I tune that in when I'm working on the layout.  I enjoy watching my Transition Era trains and Transition Era automobiles while I listen to "Rock Around the Clock."

Good morning all. Another day of work, another dollar.  It's pouring down rain here now, but compared to what has happened in Arkansas,Mississippi,Alabama, and everwhere else-I can deal with the rain.  I am actually pretty good at my job, and it's A LOT BETTER THAN UPS! I hope everyone who needs it gets better soon.

I know a Hans, really nice older man.  Almost 80 and still works a lot-just because he enjoys his job.

I like the outside fram as well, it's "adorable" and has character.  Like I've said before, if I didn't have such  a collection of PRR stuff, I would start doing NG stuff. The PRR stuff has memories attached to it, so that is why I wouldn't sell anything that fits in my era (I've got a boxcar that is to new-shadow keystone instead of the keystone only).

I've always wanted to visit miniture wunderland, provided I ever go to visit the land of my ancestors (part German, part Solvackian, part Hungarian, posssibly part Italian, part something else), I hope to check it out.

Oh I have been to Cass, Colorado Railroad museum, Durango and Silverton (twice), East Broad Top(multiple times  before it shut down),B&O museum,Altoona museum,Horseshoe curve,The Galitzin tunnels,RR museum of PA, Strasburg railroad,  Cumbres and Toltec, Alamosa(before the sg opened), and a few others that elud me right now.  I've also seen most of the NS heritage units, a UP heritage, a FERROMEX special unit, and an amtrak sponsored trip down Norfolk Southern rails that had not seen a passenger train since 1954(PRR disccontinued the service).

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Gidday Chloe, a banana smoothie please.Drinks

a trip to all those railroads I´d like to visit,
I guess one of the really good things about social media is the availability of videos of those places that we’d both like to go to. It may be a poor substitute for the “Real Thing” but certainly better than “a poke in the eye with a burnt stick”. Wink
My late friend Hans spoke fondly of his hometown, Hamburg, though his early memories were of a far darker time, but he did enjoy getting back to see family and of course visit Miniatur Wunderland, not long after it first opened, he took great delight in showing us the video, had to translate for us as it was in German.

Probably far too late to be of assistance but I would suggest that you could use the German equivalent of this. I have used it on similar materials in the past with success.
Cool  looking locomotive.

Good Morning!

For whatever reason, I did not catch much sleep last night. Maybe my visit to Miniatur Wunderland was already over the limit for me. I think I will take a midday nap today.

"Ja Bear"wrote: One of the advantages of living where people rust instead of tanning Smile, Wink & Grin, being able to visit Miniatur Wunderland...

Bear - yes that may be an advantage. OTOH, a trip to all those railroads I´d like to visit, like those narrow gauge lines in the East, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR, the Durango & Silverton RR, and others, is out of question. Aside from Miniatur Wunderland, Hamburg is certainly one of the nicest cities in the world to live. It has more bridges than Venice, a huge lake right in the heart of the city, a bustling port, beautiful residential areas (requiring quite a lot of change in your pocket), a fascinating and utterly well functioning public transport system, dozens of great museums and lots of green. In fact, Hamburg is so green, that you hardly see it when approaching it by plane. A fresh breeze from the sea keeps the air clean, there is no smog, and the lack of high rise buildings give it a fin de siecle charme. Worth a visit!

I´ll be doing some more landscaping today, cut & fit those Styrofoam inserts for embankment. It´s a bit of a tedious task, involving an ugly smell from that glue I use to fasten the stuff. It´s solvent free, but still stinks like (beep, expletive, deleted)!

Make it a great day!

Edit: I have made up my mind - I´ll be ordering the 4-4-0 in the outside frame version, providing the bargain is still available ...

Edit #2 - the bargain was still available - just ordered this one:

Mint tea, please.

I saw where Model Power/Mantua are going out of business. That is too bad. Glad I already have the 2-6-6-2 Logger w/ tender. Will be needing that for hauling logs to the lumber mill.

Looks like a chance of severe storms here tonight and elsewhere. Stay safe y'all.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Jeff- Good to see that your wound is getting tended too

Yeah, it's about four millimeters smaller than it was a couple of weeks ago. My father was a little concerned today that it seems I'm spending a lot of time working on the computers and not on the train layout. I told him most of the work on the layout requires that I be on my feet a lot. A definite no-no with a large open wound on my foot. Most of the computer work requires I be sitting down. Which do you think my doctor wants me doing? That which keeps me off my feet of course, or in my case off my foot.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could use a nice hot cup of decaf right now, please...

Been a pretty decent day around here today.  Mid 50's and sunny most all day.  I have been finishing up odds and ends such as writing the agenda for the Division Officers meeting tomorrow.  I went over to the High School to get photos of 4 of the MLK Scholarship winners mid afternoon.  I stopped in at the drug store on my way over and dropped off a new prescription for one of the psoriasis creams that I use and asked to get another refilled (for the lances for my blood tests).  The lady aty the cash register noticed i was sue for more Diabetes medicine also, so I told her refil that one and I would be back in an hour or so.

Got to the High School and it seems the seasons have changed as there were all kinds of construction stuff goimg on around the property.  Probably installing elephant fence with razor wire on top or something....  I parked out in the back parking lot and hiked over to the door where you have to ring the bell and the lady at "Checkpoint Charlie" buzzes the door and lets you in.  I walked over to her window and she said, you do know we close the office at 2:30.  I said yes, which shoe do you want me to leave?  She laughed and said go ahaed, I know who yuou are and I will be gone before you get back.  I get almost to the guidance office and was stopped by the Vice Principal (whom I had not yet met) because i didn't have the proper vistors tag and I did have both shoes....  I told him who I was and that I was going to the Guidance Office to get photos of the MLK Scholarship winners and that the lady at the checkpoint recognized me and told me to just go over to guidance office since her office would be closed before I would be leaving the building.  I also told him I spent 19 years of my carreer teaching Music in the Middle School.  He seemed satisfied that I was OK.  Sure hope I didn't get the lady at the checkpoint in trouble!

Ooooo, Ooooo, Ooooo!  Geneva is in the process of Urban Renewal.  Finally, they are tearing down an old eyesore that should have been torn down 50 years ago.  Oh, I taught those 19 years in the dump!  Yep the old Geneva Middle School/ Geneva High School is finally being torn down (well the newer addition, including the room where I taught, will be staying).

I mentioned that to the Vice-Principal and he said, "That must be a heartwrenching thing for you".  I started to laugh and said, "Not at all, I hated that dump!  Should have been torn down years ago!"

Below is the view now looking inside what was the auditorium.  You can see the procenium arch still intact.  The stage looks about the same as I remember it.  A Mess! Actually the stage iself is gone... The doors on the right side were to the dressing rooms for stage productions.  Code prevented us from using them for shows, but didn't stop the students from tagging the area.... LOL  The area below the auditorium was originally the gym of the school.  Dressing rooms,. coaches offices, and showers were directly under the stage.  The old gym became the cafeteria by the time I taught there.

 Ken, Stay safe !

ChooChoo Willie, enjoy the new hot rod...  I have owned the PiP for a year and a half and i still reach into my pocket for the key every once in a while. Whistling  Actually I do tend to like the new security systems today.  Didn't think I would, but you get used to it quickly.

Catch you all later!
