Here's a grade crossing, probably not quite what you had in mind though...
Probably too close to February to expect any more on this thread, so how about:

Forty years ago I needed N scale ground throws. The Alexander ground throws that were used on HO layouts were ubiquitous in the pages of MR:
Looking at them, I mimicked their principle of operation in my scratch-built brass ground throws:
I refined my design a few years ago when I began making them for my current HO layout:
...but the inspiration can still be traced to the pages of MR.

Phil, I'm not a rocket scientist; they are my students.
This portion of my present layout started as a bedroom layout in my previous house based on an MR article in the September 1992 issues titled "A Track Plan to Share a Family Room or Bedroom". I did is as a mirror image to the original track plan and never built the 'wings'. WHne I moved, I incorporated the layout into my new plans, and extended it to the right. Now I am rebuilding it, calling it the Greenvale Indistrial Area Rebuild'
This is an overall picture of the layout before I started the rebuild

Here are a couple of my 'custom painted' locos:
Both units are Proto2000 models and both were in Atlantic Coast Line livery when they started out. I painted them and applied Microscale decals. The A-unit antenna was made from the handrail stanchions from an Athearn BB SD-40-2 and a couple of pieces of music wire. I installed an MRC sound decoder and a 1-inch Soundtraxx speaker. The B-unit is equipped with Lenz decoder without sound. The locos have been speed matched with Decoder Pro and handle our 8-car Pennsy consist without problems.
How about another 'custom painted' loco?

Since Lee [yankee flyer] didn't pick a new topic, I'll assume it's still the one that Garry suggested.
Here is something I just finished building this weekend: A by-product refinery to process the gases emitted by my coke ovens. I started with a Walthers North Island Refinery kit, then attached ~18" of half-inch diameter Evergreen tubing to carry the coke gases to the refining facility (the brown pipe on the left).
...then, I configured some additional piping to take the finished liquids from the refinery. Two pipes go to a tank car loading platform, the other two empty into the gray storage tank:
I shot these photos quickly just to get them on this thread, the whole trainroom is still a construction zone as you all can see! That's why normally you'll only see me posting pics of my previous layout. So....let's see some pictures of "under construction" areas of your layout!

Thanks for the complement. I spent an entire Utah winter building the trestle and associated truss bridge. It's actually two concentric curved trestles with a 1.5% grade on each. I think my General Industries building might qualify as a kit bash:
The building front is Walther's Fireproof Storage & Transfer Background Building. I mounted it diagonally on a corner of the layout and built side walls and a roof from black foam-core to give the building some depth and provide stability. I mounted a water tank from the scrap box, on the roof to give it more definition and lighted the interior. The signs and logo were made on my home computer. The gondola load, a Scene Masters item, was hand painted with Testor's paints to give the area some color. The dunnage was made from a scrap piece of balsa and a few bits of basswood. The figures came from Woodland Scenics, Bachmann and Life-Like.

Here is a Sylvan Scale Models lake freighter, sold as an early 1900's model but upgraded to resemble a typical lake boat launched in the late postwar period. I used a mix of PVC pipe and stryrene shapes to make the forward house, and for the stack I used a piece of PVC compressed from a perfectly-round to an oval shape. I also added an extra 1"-thick plank under the hull to make it look like it is empty, i.e. floating higher off the surface of the water.
Let's see another kitbash
I modify most of my kits to make them fit my needs. This one started out to be a boat shop:

[edit] Got beat! So show something going on in the woods...
An old-time New Yorker saw this photo on my computer screen, and looked at me quizzicly:
He recognized the equipment, but not the station, and asked where it was. When I told him "in my family room" he was kind of shocked. I made my own latex molds and then did Hydrocal castings for the platforms, walls and stairs. This picture is so old it was taken with a film camera.

16 hours, and no British fallen flags, so lets widen the scope to include fallen flags from anywhere in the Commonwealth
Here's a very recently fallen flag from right here in the Palmetto State. Plumeting natural gas prices and the cost of modernization led South Carolina Electric and Gas to shut down the Canady's Steam Plant. It was Hampton & Brnachville's only customer.
The real H&B 44 is currently at the South Carolina Railroad Museum in Winsboro, where it's being restored to operating condition. It has on left South Carolina once since 1927 to be used in an episode of NBC's show "Revolution."
