Surprise! - New format update
Posted by tstage on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 1:23 PM

Anyone else besides myself not see this one coming?  Usually we got a heads up "sticky" prior to a major change like this.

I guess I'll get used to the new format like I did the others.  Hope Kalmbach restores the "last post" feature.  Otherwise, it'll be a lot of page wading for any relatively long threads.

I noticed a couple of hours of downtime, then this.

Paragraphs do not work in "Quick Reply" mode.

Quotes don't seem to work at all.

The little pencil has been replaced with a real Edit button.

The font in normal Reply mode is N scale, while the font in Quick Reply is in HO Bold.

But, the annoying green pop-up is gone.  For this I am truly grateful.

Let's use this picture of a moose about to board the IRT subway to test photo insert:

OK, that worked.

At the bottom, the Edit, Reply and Quick reply buton placement is inconsistent.  On one of my posts, they were properly right justified in frame.  On another, the Quick Reply button was shifted almost completely out of the window.

For reference, this machine is Windows 7 and I'm using IE 8 on it.

Under the avatars, I now see home town and state information.  I think that was missing from the previous forum software.  I think it's useful, so thanks for that.

I was able to edit this post to correct my shoddy spelling.

There's also no way of knowning when a thread was started from a particular forum page.  You actually have to view the first page of the specific thread to determine that.

Design of Experiments I:  See if the mis-located buttons are related to the insertion of a picture:

Yes, there is much to be said for realistic prototype modeling.

And for experimentation.  The buttons are correctly located for all my posts, except the two posts where I inserted pictures.  Isn't science wonderful.

Later Edit:  The above is true of IE8 on my Windows 7 machine at work.  However, things look just fine on my XP machine at home running Firefox.

I just posted a reply on ShowMe and noticed a couple of things

I had thought ShowMe was on page 4 yesterday and it has 3 pages today. all the content appears to be there, so are there more replies per page??

When I posted me reply, some of the words on the right margin went off the page, it does not seem to be doing it here, so something with the picture format? I noticed the same on a couple of other ShowMe replies with pictures, but not all.

At least the post counts appear to be about right! Smile

Just noticed something else, CNTR-V does not work for Paste. Need to select Edit/Paste from the toolbar. It highlighted what I had typed and overwrote it with the paste. Now to see if the link will work

So far, it's only the MR forums that have changed -- Trains and Garden Railways forums haven't (yet).

Looks like Kalmbach is still working on some tweaks.  My "Your Discussion" link displays the following:

Server Error in '/' Application.

The resource cannot be found.

I also don't see any ability to change font color or size.

I worked hard for those stars---LOL      I'm OK with the join date as that along with the question helps me know something about experience level when replying.

Great EDIT button.  I just noticed that post counts are under the poster too.    I like the shading for the area that is quoted as well.  So far, no more annoying green bar and things work pretty well--it's actually pretty good.

This is terrible. Reminds me of Yahoo and Facebook. The techies love messing with the users. I bet they are rolling in the aisles over this format. No more indication of incorrect spelling.

I'm using Firefox 25.0.1 and Windows 8 and both the quote feature (highlighting the text you want in the quote and clicking the "Add Quote to your Post" button above the Post Body) and pasting (Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V) work fine for me.

George,

It looks like the number of posts per page has increasd to 30.  (It was 15 before)  With the prior format I think could change the number of posts per page.  However, I don't see whether or not you can do that with this new format.  It's possible that I'm thinking of another website though.

They will not allow me to log out. I have to close the browser which I have configured to clear, cookies and all other on line data to log out.

Sounds like they are going in the direction of Microsoft.

They never checked out the new format first. Very poor programming. My stepson did this kind of work for some years and he said this was really bad.

Aww, cripes.

Now the green bar runs diagonally across the screen, my post count is zero, so I am being moderated, and they got my avatar wrong.   That's the bad news.   Super Angry

The good news is that Sheldon's profile says that he hates Bachmann and loves DCC.   Laugh

OK, I now see an issue, comparing w/ the unchanged Trains forum - the old way, the comments column size was generally fixed in width, so that you could shrink the entire window size such that the right-side ad column would almost disappear (handy in certain situations). Now, the comments column size seems to shrink in width, and in a much larger proportion than the ad column.

What a nice mercenary move, Kalmbach...

Off TopicTest ramblings-feel free to disregard:

Dots - SignOdd thing is, when I try to post a link and change the text in the box to something, (I put "test" in the box above the URL, it puts the link as what I text next on the main page, and initially shows up blank. I was going to write "Odd this doesn't work". And it goes back to the top of the post. Bang Head So apparently do emoticons. Note the "Odd: at the start of the sentance is a linkm but only shows up when hovered over. again, odd. And ti doen't autocorrect captialization or misspellings.  Quote test

Okay, so when I split quote things, they all don't pile up at the top anymore, that is nice, disregard quote above, it was a test.  Question Emoitcon test. Note Emoticon spelled wrong, editor doesn't have spellcheck anymore. that is annoying.  http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/225023.aspx

Now with text added:   goes to top of page.

http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/225023.aspx. But when I copy and paste a link in, it is active. Good.

No, they haven't, and I'm not sure I want them to. The undo feature is nice, but this will take getting used to.

And all the other links are in the prior format, Rich.  As mentioed, it appears that Kalmbach is doing this update sectionally and the MR forums are the initial experiment.

I think for the most part the comments have been fairly civil.  We're just pointing out what's different and what needs to be fixed (i.e. lost features, broken links) and I see that as a good and helpful thing; for both the users and the IT crew.
