Who said "Make it a (grayed) day?

It´s gray, dark and gloomy outside we have to switch on the lights. It´s only shortly past 3 pm over here!

Did some weathering on the chassis, now the critter looks even better! But somehow I got a glitch into the gearbox again, so I have to teach the animal how to run properly again. All it needs now is the window glazing and some chipped paint, with rust underneath, as Todd wrote.

Flo, maybe a mug of hot chocolate will cheer me up a little - would you be so kind? Thank you!

Got some snow overnight here, its a little messy out there but it is pretty cold. Not much on today, the wife has to pick uo the renatl car while ours is being fixed from the accident. Then I have a few railroad projects I want to do today ( mostly painting figures ) and track cleaning. Might go down and see if there are any trains coming through, always looks nice in the snow.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and……oh make it a breakfast burrito….no wait. I’ll have egg foo yeung please. That’s as tummy warming as oatmeal.

Cold.

Happy B-Day CakeI know it was yesterday, but I didn’t find out until today. I noticed you casually slipped it in there towards the end, but I caught it.

Mr B.- When I was wo*king, we had “use or lose”. I would hardly take off during the year and when it got to the end, I’d have to take off most all of the month of December. One year I lost like 2, maybe 4 hours and boy that caused a mountain of paperwork to include me signing a sworn affidavit that I never requested any leave time during the year and was denied. Anyway, When I would return to work, they would all want to know what I bought. Seems when faced with nothing to do, I’d get bored and end up buying something like a car, or a gun…., a house. At least you have trains. Back then I didn’t. And yes, I’ve been witness to the good reference so they’ll leave, or more like so someone will take them, more than once.

Ulrich- Weathering looks greatYes. Too bad I have no suggestions for chipped paint. That’s all it seems to need. That however, I would be afraid to try because I’m afraid I would ruin the whole model. Very nice.

G’s right. Subtlety is the key. Oh and patience. It’s not impossible to get extra pay even from the fast foods. Just don’t count on it.

Retriement…yes I seem to be busier than when I wo*ked. But I admit, I do mainly what I want to do now. At least for the most partWhistling Laugh. But stay busy I must. Too expensive for me to get too idle even with the trains. ESPECIALLY with the trains.

Today I will wo*k on the shelves a bit and hopefully will find out the items needed yet for the feast tomorrow so’s I can get it today instead of me running in town tomorrow for a can of pineapple or something like that. Last  year I had to do that three times for items and there was no excuse other than she just didn’t look because well, she had me to run into town for her. This year I shall protest that, and refuse to budge. Unless it’s something I really like or……I get that lookSigh.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Top again! Order up.

Good Morning!

Chloe, just coffee for me, please! I have to go a little easier on the food in the next days...

The weather in my neck of the woods is back to normal, i.e. gray, wet and windy. Temperatures are 37F during the day, and not much colder at night.

No plans for the day, which means I will be playing with my track planning tool for some time. I might give the critter another close look to see what I can do about the chassis in terms of weathering.

Ray - a belated Happy B-Day and a big Cake from Petra! You are 10 years ahead of me ...

Will drop by later in the day!

Make it a good one!

GOOD WEDNESDAY MORNING!!

Today is Wednesday, November 27th, 2013!!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

Today's fun limmerick:

I think the limericks are fun
and when I have read the last one
I'll wipe away tears
from my eyes and my beard
and go back to where I'd begun.

Today's weird words:

borasque : a tempest at sea

glaistig: gaelic for beautiful fairy; or just the opposite- a hairy hag in the shape of a goat

demegoric: of or pertaining to public speaking

USED IN A SENTENCE:

The borasque was afraid of the glaistig's demegoric, as the glaistig would win the fantasy creatures debate.

Evening All, Just a hot chocolate please Chloe, it's getting close to my bedtime.

Ray, a belated Happy B-Day.

Johnboy, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Galaxy, when I started work in the mid 70s, the only reasons for instant dismissal, from memory, were for Theft as a Servant, Fighting in the Workplace, and Refusing to obey a lawful instruction. Now 3 verbal, and 2 wriiten warnings are required before you can fire someone and even then a disgruntled dismissed former employee can file a Wrongful Dismissal Case in the Employment Court. That's why, if I get a contract which requires more manpower than myself I will only hire other labour only contractors. Having been a Shop Steward and also in management it seems that the happy medium is a rare occurance, that's human nature I guess.Sigh

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Cheers, the Bear.

Had a little problem with my //e earlier. Drive two on the slot six drive card (backup drive for Native Fury) seemed a bit sick. Turned out it wasn't the drive at all. The cable connector had only partial contact with the drive card. I shut the computer down, pushed the connector down with my thumb and felt it move then set. Fired the computer back up and all is as it should be. Sometimes heat can cause tyhe connectors to push up a little but most of the time it's due to the connector not being pushed all the way down in the first place.

Progress on the old style coach is moving right along. The walkway from end to end is done, the lavatory and food service area are done. The doors to the seating compartments are done. I still have to program the locks then program in the details of the compartment interiors and who or what might be in them. After all this is a train crawling with criminals of many types, sizes and ages so there's danger at every turn. After this coach there's one more coach, then a baggage car, a crew car then three locos. So Oliver needs to collect all the items he needs so he can be on top of his game when he either brakes or derails the train. He might bend it a bit but either way it's gonna stop.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill of decaf for me please...

Johnboy, thanks!  It was a fairly peaceful day around here.  Did some shopping for items I need to get the stuff cooked I am bringing on Thursday, opened up a bunch of Birthday Cards, and went to a MLK Committee meeting tonight in the weather....  Family will be throwing me a birthday party next Sunday I hear....  Don't feel any older.  I will keep you in my prayers for good news on the tumor and all other stuff you are going through!

We have had some snow, some sleet, some rain, and most everything in between.  They are calling for up the 3/4" of ice possible in some areas with this storm.  That is not gtood news for keeping the power on!  I do have the Pure Sine Wave Inverter for 120v power in the PiP should I need it, but I would just as soon not have to fire it up.

Have a safe night out there.  Prayers for all in need!

Well I got started on programing in the old style luxury passenger coach. The line numbers for it's part of the program run from 700 to 1570. 700 to 1150 deal with the walkway going from one end to the other. At one end of the car is a small food service area manned by two stewards who run snacks to the four deluxe seating compartments number 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D. There are seven more seating compartments for passengers paying the regular fare (no snacks or games provided). These compartments are numbered (you guessed it) 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7. This is a day travel coach so there are no berths provided. At the other end of the coach is a small lavatory (restroom). The walkway going from one end of the car to the other runs down one side of the car so it's between the windows and the wall separating the compartments from the walkway. From what I understand coaches similar to this were in use in Oz up until the late 80's.

RAY, A very Happy Birthday to you,  Oh to be 67 again, I've got 6 years on you. and by the way am still working..

Good luck and stay safe to all those enduring the winter storms. Do nothing foolish.

I had another Cat Scan this morning (whole body this time)  It worries me. They don't say much or even answer many questions. Not that they are ignoring me, just nothing very informative.   Thursday morning and afternoon I am scheduled in for a full day at the Cancer Clinic and hopefully will come out of there with more info and the plan they have in mind for treatment.  The wait is the painful part.

Started to assemble my Grandson's Christmas present, I can hardly wait to see his expression when he sees it. He has been getting into Thomas on the TV and get quite excited about it.

Again Guys, thanks for all the thoughts, kind wishes and prayers, and Galaxy the lit candle is always welcome as well.

MBH, just called and supper is ready, so I must answer the call.

By the way where are the two emotioncons with the big smile and laugh ?  They seem to have disappered as well with this new/old update. Along with the ability to add color to your words............C'mon give us some of the old features back

Later Taters....

Johnboy out.................................................for now

from Saskatchewan, in the Great White North..

We have met the enemy,  and he is us............ (Pogo)

Good Afternoon,

Another sunny, brisk day here in Winterpeg. The river near our house is completly frozen over now and indeed it has been for a week or more. I wonder how long it will be before some goof goes through the ice on a snowmobile.

Had my annual physical this morning. BP was good as was the EKG. Have to wait on the lab results but Doc said he would be surprised if anything turned up. I do count myself lucky to only need Lipitor every other day and Glaucoma drops daily. As I said to my doc, when my pants seem too snug, I immediately cut back on the food intake as I am too cheap to buy new pants. My wife would kill me if she heard that so please, Mum's the word.

Well I installed a decoder in that SW9 I bought a couple of months ago. The delay was largely waiting to go down to MN to pick it up. It is a NCE replacement board that must be hard wired. I also tried to add in a MRC sounder which worked fine except for one little problem in that I could not quite get the shell to go back on. Just a little too much stuff under the hood I guess so it is a non-sound loco. I might get a Loksound for it sometime. It runs fine but is a little noisy for a PK2. I re-lubed it, as it had been sitting for about 10 years, which helped so perhaps more break-in time will do the trick. It really isn't that bad. Now that I have a loco with correct CN green and yellow, the paint on my BMan FA2 really looks poor. I think I'll sell it and put the money from it and the CP S3 towards an Atlas RS3 that is supposed to be out soon in my colours.

I finally managed to finish that N scale Kitts Transfer building and have painted a Kibri fuel depot that I hope to assemble later tonight. After that it is the continuation of a retaining wall now that I have the necessary pieces or I might assemble an Atlas wharehouse after it gets painted. At least the window frames are seperate unlike those DPM kits. Busy, busy, busy.

Gee, I sure seem to be busy in retirement. Tomorrow I'm off to see my investment guy and then more RR stuff. I suppose I should get at a few painting jobs I have planned assuming I can find the time.

Ray and Galaxy, I hope you don't get too much snow. That storm is supposed to whack Montreal fairly hard.

Guys in the way of the winter storm stay safe. Here in Southern Ontario we are only suppose to get 1cm so nothing big. We are in a akward position as 45 minutes to the west of us got hammered with snow on the weekend and we got nothing. Looks like this storm is going to affect the states more then us here in Canada.

Thirdly: NO EMPLOYEE is so valuable that they cannot be replaced! Be fully aware of this. Tread carefully when "making demands"

Very Good Advise Mr. G. While I could have said more, not knowing US labour law gave me reason to stop while I was ahead, don't want to get Vincent fired. That said I suspest that employers are the same the world over.

Night All, Cheers, the Bear. Zzz

Bear, Here in the USA, it IS possible for an employer to fire you for ANY REASON- even just for the color of your eyes being the "wrong color"- EXCEPT in liike Seattle and like DC or Philly and I think NYC is trying hard to get laws passed. Only a few very few cities have protectorate laws against willy-nilly firings.

They can fire you for "not representing the corporate image" if your hair isn't right, your age isn't right, etc. A Dentist fired his assistant for "being too pretty". His wife was concerned he'd have an affair with her, so demanded he fire her. He did and the COURT UPHELD IT. HE COULD fire her legally.

so one must tread carefully these days. BUT one CAN enhance one's position Carefully. That is what I tried to suggest to him, and warn him.

Well.......  Hold on  folks!  Here she come!!!!   Looks like a classic Nor'easter to me by the looks of the weather maps...

Sn*w is falling here in the Finger Lakes a couple hours earlier than expected and it looks to be the type that will just keep coming and coming.  They are now saying 6" to 1' up nearer the great lakes but I wouldn't be surprised to see that much or more by Thanksgiving right here on Seneca Lake.

Went out to the store to pick up some needed supplies for the big feast.  Didn't grow Butternut Squash this year so I had to buy a couple.  Also needed to get celery and more onions to be sure I have enough for the double recipe of Bread Stuffing I will be making Thiursday morning.

Jeffrey, have you had any rain down your way? We will be getting quite a bit here in the Finger Lakes in the next 48 hours. IIRC it is coming up here directly from you guys in the South! My son will be driving route 90 in from the Chicago area and around Buffalo, NY is predicted to be a real mess!

TONS! I'd ask you if you want some but it looks like there's plenty on the way already. We're expecting snow tonight but I don't think you want any of that either.

Getting bored is no reason not to retire.

Well said Rich!  I know several people who have gone back to w*rk after retiring.  I always ask them if they are having fun?  If they say yes, I inform them that it can't be called work anymore....  I kept my recording/live sound business for several years after I officially retired from teaching.  My hearing (or lack there of) put an end to that though.  I guess folks liked the things I did as many were very unhappy I gave up the business and told me so. Smile, Wink & Grin  I can tell you I have little time for being bored during my retirement.  Way too many things I want to do with whatever life I have left!

My other son showed up at my house rioght after I rolled out of bed this morning.  He was dropping off my trailer (which he still hasn't used to get the lumber he needs) after finding that hisw BIL still had my table he needs for all the company coming for Thanksgiving.  I was hangiing around the house in my bathrobe and since he had to get his hair cut (a block away from where I live) and had to pick up his little daughter at school by 11:30, he just dropped it off in my lawn.  I figure next time the snow has melted out ther I will move it myself to where I keep it.

Got an email from a guy at the Museum with some breaking news about "Big Boy" #4014.  "A UP employee from the steam program was saying it won't move out to West Colton (California) until Sunday Dec 22, 2013. They are waiting for the SD40, reefer and bay window caboose so they can move them in and the 4014 out at the same time. It was to be in the middle of the night, but now local mayors, etc. want to make it a ceremony and Metrolink is going along with it
for the publicity. They will detour their trains. It will stop every 20 miles or so for greasing, and be in W. Colton a fairly short time. They will tow with big road diesels front and rear, and pull the "hospital train" with parts and staff to fix it along the way. 30 mph max, and it will be a railfan zoo in Cajon, when it passes through there. Mainly they are waiting on the SD40 which is delayed being painted in Little Rock, AR."

Guess I will get moving as at my advanced old age (67 today) I might never get up again if I sit too long....

Later!

Good morning. Yes it's still raining here. It's 36° with 100% humidity. Rain in the morning. Rain likely in the afternoon. The high today will be 42° and will feel like 30°.
 and tonight

Yep, you see right. We have a small chance of snow tonight. Wouldn't surprise me if some folks get out and dance in the streets. Others who know better will stay inside and wonder if they have the next day off from work. Half an inch of the white stuff here pretty much closes everything.

I may get a chance today to work on Oliver's train adventure. He'll be starting on his search of the old style coach with it's seat compartments. That should be a joy to program. Yeah, right. More like a PITA but it's fun to watch the text descriptions as each compartment is gone through.

And so it begins...

Well, at least for me. I just got back into the house after getting out the snowblower and clearing the driveway and sidewalk. Used the snowshovel on the walks and steps in the front and back yard. It's still coming down, but won't amount to much as the temperature was 32 degrees, but is rising.

Expecting delivery today of another Walthers Sante Fe Super Chief passenger car. This last run of cars looks great, but I noticed that the trucks hit the body limiting the radius they could be used on. I suppose one could file or grind away some areas to allow for a full swing, but these will probably be display pieces for some time, so I'll worry about that later.

I had ordered a different antenna for my new handheld scanner, and it came yesterday. It's designed for the railroad frequencies and seems to improve reception. I have only tried it out here in the house, but I'm listening to a lot that was just static before. I'll give it a work out on Saturday if we go to our usual railfanning spot. Then I'll know for sure if it was a good investment. Well, not investment, as it only cost $25.00.

I've got a couple of loads of wash to finish up from yesterday, so I guess I better head to the basement and get that chore started. Hope everyone has a good one.

It's going to be another one of those "am I ready to retire yet?" experiments.  Last year, I got bored before going back to work.  This year, I hope to plan my activities better.  There is plenty of train work to be done!

Flo, long time no see.  Two eggs, over easy, hash browns, wheat toast with strawberry jelly, bacon well done, large tomato juice.

Getting bored is no reason not to retire.  I used to tell my clients, plan before you retire.  Otherwise, just retire and then plan.  Over here in Chicago, it is golf all summer and playing with the layout in the winter.  Lunch, then a nap.  Make a second To Do List with all the things that you have not done on your first To Do List.  But, whatever you do, retire!

Flo, what's taking so long?  I am getting bored.   Laugh

Rich ...... Good to see you. My good friend retired in Illinois, and remarkably he stayed in Illinois. He gripes about state taxes and state politicians, but he stayed. .... Yes, we should plan our retirement. We should plan all of our lives..... Young people should plan their careers. We all should plan our monthly budgets. ...... Model railroaders plan their layouts. ...... Next, we implement the plans, but stay flexible and adjust according to evolving circumstances.  ... Young people should get in the habit of saving their money and investing it wisely at an early age. ..... My My 2 Cents

Vincent.... I read some of the comments about your job and your boss. You are young, and you can make your future. Evidently, you have good work habits, and that is a strong attribute. Keep that attititude. I don't know what kind of work you do, but regardless your positive attitude is a plus..... As Todd explained, some employers have a lot of job applicants. Employers can't justify higher wages to current employees if they can easily be replaced. That is how things are. No point in worrying about things you can not change. .... Take time to think of your goals for your life. Next, put together a plan to implement those goals. .... Pick your path and stay on it. Focus on your goals, and don't waste any time on doing things that keep you from reaching your goals. .... In your life time, you will probably have several employers and many bosses. You may become a boss yourself..... Always strive to better yourself. Learn as much as you can. ..... More My 2 Cents (Almost a nickel of advice in one post)

I spent enough time talking. Now my coffee is cold.

Edit: .... Model Railroader's slogan ..... Dream, Plan, Build ....... Fits in with life in general.

Good Afternoon Folks!

It´s been a busy day so far. After doing some banking business, I started on the weathering job on that lttle critter. I still have a set of powedered pigments bought last century (sounds funnier than 20 years ago). At first I brushed on some light colored pigments to brak the shine on the supposedly dull light blue color of the body, just to simulate a "bleaching" or fading effect. Next I lightly brushed on some black pigments to simulate dirt and grime, followed by rust colored pigments on the air box and the exhaust stack. Any excess material I just blew away - lesson learned, I should have worn a mask, as I must have inhaled some of that stuff... Ick!

This is the result of my second attempt of weathering:

1. Before:

2. After:

I stll need to work on that red, although it looks much better tha on those pictures.

Just to give you an idea of the size of the critter, here is a pic showing it next to a small HO scale streetcar (also one of those thingies I found in a box up in the attic):

Actually, I am quite pleased with the result so far!

Vincent - I can only second what the others have told you on that job issue. Times have changed significantly on the job markets everywhere. Don´t expect to get monetary recognition for your service. Anyone appearing too demanding will most likely lose the job. If you want a pay raise, start to look for another job, but don´t tell anyone your doing it.

Mr. B - I am not retired, just out of a job. You could say it is a "forced retirement". If I had a little more cash on hand, I would certainly be able to occupy the plenty of "free" time I have ...

Make it a great day!
