Iff'en y'all don't see my morning greeting, well it is because we have no power. We are expecting the nasty storm that plagued the midwest with tornadoes to come out way. We may be in hilly upstate NY, but we are NOT exempt from such. At teh least teh local 24 hr news is saying to expect very high winds, downed power lines and major power outages come morning! Expecting the brunt of it to hit 1-2 AM.
Speaking of the storms: prayers and thoughts for those families who have suffered losses in the great state of Ill-eh-noise. Including some relatives of mine who have been inthe target zones. No word yet on thier level of safety.
Other'en'dat, nothing special here, just some drizzle now.

Chloe, I'll have a bowl of the Beef pot pie and a trip to the salad bar to go along with a cup of hot decaf coffee for the moment.
Galaxy, you will get a little less where you are than what I may get up North of you, but not much... We are looking at 25 to 30 mph steady winds with gust a bit over 50 mph at times. If I lose electric here, I will have a chance to try out the new Pure Sine Wave Inverter I got for the PIP. It a small unit that just connects to the 12 volt battery and can put out 1000w with peaks of 2000w for short periods. Of course with the wood stove and through the wall natural gas units in the house staying warm will not be a problem. The inverter would be plenty of power to run the refrigerator and a few other things. There are units that can connect directly to the Li-ion battery in the car and put out a steady 4000 to 5000w and power a small house completely. They are also a bit pricy but I know one guy who was able to power his house from his Plug in Prius for well over a week after Hurricane Sandy. Lucky he had over half a tank of fossil fuel in it... LOL Actually much nicer than stand alone gas powered units as they use much less gas, are almost silent, and no refueling, having problems with stale gas, etc. The PiP just starts the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and recharges the traction battery as needed and then shuts itself off rather than running at high speed all the time like the stand alone units.
Jim, nice job so far on the Merchant's Row Block. Looks rather familiar to me.

Well Oliver is finally out of the observation car but not without incident. There are several items he needs to pick up while he's there. One is a blue key, another is a green key. He uses the red key he found in the motel room to unlock a box in one of the obsv cars few rooms to find a blue key. He then has to find a locker and open it with the blue key so he can find a green key. He also needs to open another box to find a manual on how to operate a GP40 locomotive. A baseball bat could come in handy too. The 'incident' I referred to earlier was when he found the blue key the box it was in should have been empty the next time he looked at it. Instead he kept finding a blue key every time he looked in it. I looked at the command line for that sequence of events many times and couldn't find the problem. When he finds the blue key the blue key variable ,BK1 is supposed to be reset from BK1=1 to BK1=0. This was being done. The box should be empty after the key is found. I followed the command line execution and it went off flawlessly. The key was found and BK1=1 was reset to BK1=0. Then when the cursor returned to the 'WHAT NEXT:' prompt BK1=0 suddenly switched back to BK1=1. The key was in the box! WHAT!! It took more searching but I finally found a 'IF BK1=0 THEN LET BK1=1' buried in the command codes. I removed this and everything now works the way it's supposed to. Oliver finally got the green key from the blue locker and was able to unlock the door of the next car, the last coach in the train. He's in the coach now and is about the check out the first group of twenty-four seats (twelve to either side of the aisle). There are three more groups of seats in this car and plenty of places for people and items to hide.

Quite a difference in the weather here over the weekend. Very mild and mostly sunny yesterday, but it's been raining all day this fine Sunday. We did go railfanning yesterday and I gave the new radio scanner a good workout. I don't understand all the chatter and jargon, but I'm sure I'll pick some of it up over time. The biggest benefit is there are 2 defect detectors very close to where we go. 1 to the east, and 1 to the west. The big benefit is we are now aware of something coming, rather than wait until they are upon us. Trains going west bound weren't too much of a problem as the sight line is very good. Trains going eastbound were a problem as they cant be seen untill they are about a good city block away. And they are usually going 40 to 45 mph. So there wasn't a lot of time to grab the camera, turn it on, get out of the car, and try to get ready. Now we have a 2 to 4 minutes advance notice. I'm happy. So we caught 5 trains in 2 hours. 2 intermodals, 3 mixed freights and 1 crude oil unit train.
As we were driving by that area today, we stopped to do a little railfanning again. Stayed about an hour and saw 2 trains, an intermodal and a road runner. Haven't seen one of those in awhile.
I did get the grass cut yesterday after we got home. Also got the rest of the cannas dug up and they are all now stored for the winter. Overall, it's been a busy, but productive weekend. Tomorrow will see breakfast, grocery shopping, and a number of other errands to get done. I haven't a clue as to what time we will get home. But whenever we do, there will be a couple of loads of laundry to be done.

It was stormy for a while here with tornado watch, but it is okay now. Looked bad on the Weather Channel in Todd's area.
PA Tom .... Thanks for the post of your railfanning photos. It was good to see the BNSF ex-Santa Fe warbonnet. They are getting scarce.I still think NS should have picked something other than black for their locomotives.
JimCG ..... Looks like you are doing great work on you Merchants Row. That is a nice kits, and there is a lot that can be added if you want.
Jom again.... You were asking about Cuda Ken. I wish he would stop in the Diner again soon. He's busy with his other hobby now, but we like his friendship.
I've been busy with non-mrr-stuff, but I accomplished some small projects on my work table (car shops). I installed Plan blinds in one of my brass Burlington sleepers. Also, I installed decoders in some Northern Pacifc F7 freight locomotives.
Sue ... I'm running fewer Northern Pacific trains now while I am changing to DCC. Now, my DCC eqipped NP is the Proto/Heritage 0-8-0, NP passenger F9 ABA, and NP freight F7A-F3B-F7A.

Our boy Oliver is in a pickle now. He's gotten in the first of the four Kings Port and western passenger coaches and can now search the overhead racks. So far I've programmed in one item for him to find. A large wrench. But he has to be on his toes as there's an ugly goon out to do him in. He'll be OK as long as he can defend himself.Nothing much to report today. We got thunder and lightning this morning but not even enough rain to call a short shower. My nieces husband found a snake out front this morning. It was a harmless hognose snake but being a very much anti-snake type he naturally flipped out and killed it. They also discovered an underground hornet nest. To make it worse the hornets had neighbors. Yellow jackets! Both got treated to some of the very best gasoline available in this area and got a first class demonstration of how to burn out hornets and yellow jackets with themselves as the subjects of the demonstration.That's all for today. Good morning. It's 62° with 68% humidity. The high will be 75° with a slight chance of some wet weather. with a I have no idea whatsoever about what I'll be doing today. I may work on the game a bit more, I may watch some movies. I just don't know.
Good morning from New England. It was a rainy drive in to work this morning, with a few patches of very heavy rain. There was nothing at all falling by the time I got to work, though. It was in the low 60s, unusually mild for this time of year.
SWMBO is back with her parents in Florida. She'll be there for 3 weeks this time. She called Saturday night trying to get tech support for connecting her Apple toys (Macbook Air and iPhone) to the network in her parents' condo, but I'm a PC guy and could not help at all. Maybe I'll tell her to be sure and pick up the Blue Key, the Green Key and that big wrench.
A year and a half back, when we were visiting our daughter in Italy, I bought a belt. I also ate too much. So, I've been slowly working to recover from the latter, and over the weekend I had to drill a couple of new holes in the belt so I could tighten it one more notch and keep my pants up. A small victory, perhaps, but every inch helps.

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of organic granola and a cup of Seneca lake Roast dark roast coffee (maybe two) this morning.
Sun is peeking through the clouds here in the Finger Lakes this morning. Currently 51°F which is reported to be the high for the day. Wind is still whipping through the area, 25 to 35mph with gusts up to 55mph. So far no power problems here. I see Galaxy made it through the night and still has power too.
Last night I started putting together the first two windows for the Blacksmith's Shop. I guess each window will have to be individually fitted due to small discrepancies in the cuts in the plaster. I have two ready to install in the openings sometime today. Also ballasted a couple hundred feet of track... (In HO Scale! Actually a little more than two foot of track on the layout).
About the only pressing item on the agenda today is to finish mowing the lawn and put the mower away for the Winter. Basically that means cleaning it and storing the batteries inside. Should find more time to w*ork on the railroad today. I am so far behind, I need to get some real quality time to start making any real progress down there. I do need to get the MLK Art and Poetry Forms done and out to the Schools in the next couple of days, but since the lady that was supposed to be chairing the Art and Poetry this year is moving and just resigned from the committee, I will have to find out how I should proceed....
Guess I will start to face the day in get busy...

Currently it is 34 with an expected high of 59 under sunny and cloudy skies.
Not much to tell from out west. Slept late again yesterday due to another late evening Saturday. Saw the play my daughters were in again Sat. night, then since it was the birthday of the younger one, we met the cast at Bully's for some late night snacking and one of her friends brought a cake. A good time was had by all. But two late night nights, as I got home around 2:00 AM, in a row seems to be too much for this old guy. I am not a kid anymore.
W**K in a little while, so no train stuff today.

If you're wondering what kind of wrench Oliver has to find on the train here it is. It's for 2" and 2.5" nuts and bolts and is great for hitting things. My father uses it for arm exercise much as you'd use a dumbbell.

I have to say that although we currently are at 7F with a 10 mph wind and 2 feet of sn*w on the ground I'd rather have this than what a lot of you folks south of the border got. Kind of puts things some sort of perspective for me.
Now that the ground is right and truly white and winter is upon us, I've been busy working on the rail road. Got most of the fascia on and in the process of starting on more landscaping. Tons of rock work to do but I really line doing the scenery part.
Still having problems programming my loco's via JMRI. The whole dcc thing seemed like a good idea when I bought it but with all the problems I'm having, I wish I'd stayed with good old DC. My Son in Law comes down every so often and everything works for him but the minute I try to use it.... nothing. JMRI won't recognize the layout and I get frustrated and walk away. What a waste of money.
I'm at the point where I'm considering just forgetting the whole rail road thing, tearing out what I've done and use the room for whatever.
Anyway, hope everyone is OK in the Midwest .

My Mother used to get those injections too Galaxy. It was like you say, a week of pain for a month or so of a whole lot less pain.
Hey y'all. Stopping in for the night. Wasn't able to visit over the weekend as I was busy at work, and we (Amy and I both) were busy on Sunday with church and church stuff.
On the parts for the Dash 8, I'm missing the driveshafts and the coupler that goes onto the end of the truck for said driveshafts. Other than that, I've got everything for it and I'm quite happy with how the unit looks, just want it to actually PULL!
On the kid in the cooker (due January 20th-ish) Its a girl, so that makes three girls and one boy (not complaining as my son, Michael, came into the world at 11lbs-3oz). Speaking of which, Wednesday is a check up day, so I dunno if I'll be in that day or not. Normally a doctor's visit day also includes a bunch of other running around.
On the MRR front, I've been reading my issue of MRR, other than that, haven't been able to do much at all with anything related.
Work today was kinda slow, but needed it, as the shop looked like hammered doggy "stuff". Got most of it cleaned up, just got two bays (six bay shop) left to clean sometime this week and will probably fire up the pressure washer on Saturday and power scrub the floors with our acid concrete cleaner (stuff works great, but leaves the floor "ashy")
Welp, that's about it for me, glad to see that everyone that was in/around the storms north of me are doing all right. Prayers for those whom are sickly, or on the mend.
And Ulrich, that double turntable and roundhouse simply looked AWESOME! (both the modeled version, and the real thing)

We had a fairly nice but very windy day here in the Finger Lakes. Gusts over 55 mph at times. I several times had to run over to the neighbors houses and retrieve some stuff that blew away from my property. One was a cardboard box stuck back by the woodpile on my back porch. Somehow the wind would gust and send it flying from where I had it jammed in. Still have no idea how it kept blowing away. Guess it doesn't want to get recycled.... I did finish up the lawn today. Still haven't put away the batteries for the Winter, but did tip the mower over and clean out all the built up clippings stuck to the underside. Also mailed a package to my Sister in Florida. She left a sweater at my house and I had a couple newspaper clippings I figured she might like to see. Also sent out some emails about the 2015 Convention my Division of the NMRA will be hosting. Need to get approval from the Region before going much farther. Oh! I even got a few minutes to do a bit more on the Blacksmith's shop... Got the windows in place one side #8 (the first one to get done....):

Any of you know what would be the best glue to put the "glass" in place without crazing the plastic it is made of?

Here's my nose for counting, CB&Q Garry! I think Galaxy missed me, as I slipped into the Diner so quietly that he didn't notice me.
Some of the worst-hit areas were north of us and across the river (in Illinois), as well as not too many miles south of us (Scott County, Missouri), probably 50 miles or less - but not quite as bad as in Massac or Washington Counties in Illinois. In Missouri, some towns hit were Morley, Oran, and Benton; in Illinois, the towns with extensive damage were New Minden, and it was definitely much worse in (what was) Washington - entire streets & neighborhoods leveled there. I was surprised to see on the news locally tonight, that the Illinois areas (not sure if it was just Washington or New Minden also) had power restored to areas (in only one day!).
Definitely keep the people those areas in your thoughts & prayers. I was glad to hear from some of you other Diners that your particular areas missed the worst of the storms. Now, we just need to hear from our Illinois Diners - hopefully before too long... The news tonight had some of the people on from areas hard-hit, and several of them were just glad that their families weren't hurt and that they'd survived the storm; they weren't as bothered by the loss of pretty much all their belongings. Some were already going through the rubble that used to be their homes, trying to find photos and other family memory items. Puts things in perspective for me.
I'll be at the Rivet Counter, drinking my hot chocolate for a bit. Prayers for those in the storm-damaged areas (including Illinois and Missouri, but other areas that just didn't get the mentions on the national news).

Oliver is almost halfway through the coach now. I've programmed in a yellow lock box that contains an orange key. Oliver has no idea what's in the box and he doesn't have a yellow key. See he's going to have to keep his eyes peeled for it. When or if he finds it he'll have to come back and unlock the box as he can't take the box with him. So far there are two very dangerous elements in the coach. A goon with a knife and an evil woman with a big bad 44 magnum. What these two do depends on what Oliver has with him (or doesn't have). Either the goon will kill him or he'll defeat the goon. The woman with the gun will either kill him or her gun will jam and she'll have to beat a hasty retreat. I never said this was going to be easy.Now I'm calling it a night a little early tonight. See y'all tomorrow.

I thought the tornados happened more in the spring storms Maybe some of those "global warming" people will mention global warming causes it, but seriously, we are in a cooler part of earths history, and the planet naturally goes through cycles of warming and cooling. So no we are not getting an electric lawn mower or leaf blower (which uses electricity produced by coal, and hauled by the huge Diesel locomotives, now that sounds environmentally friendly), my dad got a electric leaf blower a year ago and it is pathetic, it dies quickly, and I could blow harder then it when it is almost died, and it takes forever to recharge (unlike gas were it is fill and go), he now wants a new gas one. The gas lawn mower sometimes has a hard time cutting the grass in certain places (and sometimes dies on me) so an electric would be horrible.
My Grandfather was a Chief engineer on one of the huge ships, and we have some of his huge wrenches in the garage.

On the layout I'm running my Northern Pacific freight F-units. There are 2 F7A's with a F3B in the middle. The A-units are the MRC Platinum F7's that Cuda Ken liked. The F3B is a Stewart dummy I paimted to match the A-units.

That is about a 3 part answer, Garry.
First, I used to be the Head Receiver for a dept store when I was in my 20s and everything that the store carried went through my hands, EVERYTHING! If not my hands, the few helpers that I had to unload some 60 odd feet of at least one truck and dunring half the year, at least 2 trucks plus drop shipments.During the short 6 months, I was on by myself and had stocking duties too in addition to unloading trucks. Plain and simple: I plum wore out my back then after many years of this. I even spent 4 months out on employer disability for a bulging/nearly herniated disc {that has settled down some}. That part affects the muscles.I have pretty much destroyed them and no hope of any therapy working save the shots is helping. The things we do in our younger years REALLY DO affect us in older age.if only I had known...
Second, I naturally as I age, I have had arthritis set in. Arthritis is NOT helping and helps to affect the bones of course. They are getting "craggly" and stiff as they kindagrow and together. Again therapy was of little help. been a problem for a decade or more.
Thirdly, I had two tumors growing back there tha everyone missed until an MRI showed "possible necrotic tissue" there. The two tumor removals WAS supposed to help, but did not. Fortunately, it did not make things worse.
Fourthly, I tend to age quicker than my calendar years, if you know what I mean. Everything that SHOULD happen at an older age, has affected me at a much younger age. Prostate trouble set in by age 25, not age 45-50, for instance. Gall bladder trouble set in and plagued me for 5 years until htey finally removed it at 32, not 45 like "usual".Etc. Etc.
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
EDIT: I see I got tippy top, so breakfast is on me!!!

What a boring and gray day it is today! I have nothing proper to do, not even a HD list to work down! I will drive to my bank later in the afternoon to make some transfers - might even stop by at my friend´s place to finish some little projects with his help.
All I did this morning was to add some more detail to that railbus drawing I made yesterday. It´s a 1934 railbus, made by Waggonfabrik Wismar. It had two Ford 50 bhp gas engines - one for each direction. Top speed was less than 30 mph, which was more than steam powered trains usually did on branchlines in those days. Only very few survived until today.
Oh, btw, it was nicknamed "Schweineschnäuzchen", that´s little piggy snout...
Dennis - I know how you feel! I have been there a number of times in the past when things didn´t turn out the way I had hoped for. The best is to step back a little while and do other things, before attacking the issue again.

I've got a few driveshafts, the only trouble is there are several of different lengths, not sure which fits a dash 8 ! Best suggestion I can make is NWSL 489-6 Universal coupler kit and a length of NWSL 2.0 mm driveshaft. The universal kit comes with the shaft ends & cups so you can custom make what you need. Sometimes the plastic shafts from Bachmann , & Atlas too can be warps and cause a vibration. I just make my own and it fixes the issue![:D
Dennis, Don't give up the ship! I've found that if they are not started in the proper order, JMRI will not recognise my system either. Get you SIL to write down EXACTLY what order he is doing what to make it work! Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.
Ray, The Blacksmith shop is looking awesome! As far as the window glue, you could use Micro-clear or Testors makes a clear parts & window cement with a fine point applicator. HERE I love the stuff!
Galaxy, Sounds like you pretty mu Naufragated yourself in your younger years I'm surprised with the occasional run in with an irate farm animal or out of control dirt bike that I didn't hurt myself worse than I did in my younger years. Hopefully you can find a way to ease your pain. I know what you mean by aging faster than the norm. I never would have expected a stroke at 50, but it happened.

Its 41 and clear, going for a high of 49, the dropping to 29 tonight! (brrrr)! Got a few projects to work on today, Post Office run and stuff. Going to a free class tomorrow and Thursday at the local Comm College on the one Microsoft Office feature that's always given me fit, Excel. One of these days I'll get it figured out! I'm also re-evaluating future plans for the layout. Too many road names, too many eras, too many diesels, and not enough steam. Yes, building the Mikado has really lit my steam fire up! 1st up on the chopping block, my enclosed auto racks and Amtrak equipment, who knows what from there!
