Good morning. It's 43° with 100% humidity. The high will be 58°.Well I guess today I'll clean up the layout a bit and boot what's left of the old computer out the door. It still has the media center and Zip drive in it. Both of those quit working several years ago and I had no need to remove them. The old DVD drive (doesn't like to open and sometimes forgets there's a CD/DVD in it) will be opened up for looting! There's got to be some goodies in there that I can use.

I'm on my way out the door to go clean up the brush from the trees my son had taken down, ah, two years ago... He takes after his dad in the procrastinator dept. I plan to give my little battery operated Black and Decker saw a workout. Have 6 of the batteries and a couple chargers with me, so we should be able to w*rk all day with no problem.

I have a committee meeting for the handicapped Troop tonight so I doubt I will get anything done on the layout today.... Hopefully the meeting won't be too long and I might be able to go down cellar and stare at all I still have to do for a few minutes, maybe.
The weather people are forecasting something I have rarely seen around here lately. They say we should get something called "Sunshine" all day.... We shall see. They also are calling for the Thermo Meter to creep above 50°F for a change.... Yippy!

First time I used the-bay buyer protection and it worked, full refund for a model I purchased which arrived all busted up. It's mostly just scrap garbage at this point, which come to think of it, may not be a bad idea. Could paint the parts all rusty and stick them in a scrap yard. Might work, if I ever decide to make a scrap yard that is.
Real bad insomnia last night. Guess watching my dad's estate items selling for mostly cheap was not helpful. Could have bid on a few items myself, but I have a MRR empire to build and horses to feed, so just watched them go. It does all need to be sold off before the house can be put on the market.
Will be in the corner booth near the wood stove for awhile, getting warmed up.

Well I got my new to me engines Wednesday! But, my wife did not tell me this morning? Yep, right before I had to go to the meeting on my day off!
Gary, which SD has the ladders on both sides, SD 7 of the SD 9? I am guessing it was the 7, am I right?
New to me B&O SD 7 is making some racket but so did the B&O SD 9 I got from Vince's when I started running. So I am hopeful it will quite down.
Jeffery, is there a remote chances in heck you happen to have side frames for a PK SD 7 or 9? That is the only thing missing from the parts engine.

I found out earlier in the week, that a new DEDICATED model train store has opened in the CBD recently. I'm going to check it out on saturday. Prices seem reasonable on their website but the owner of the store seems like a nice guy so I'll probably buy a few pieces. I've always dreamed of going into town as if it was a big trip to make a purchase, something that rarely happens these days with suburban shopping malls. In fact the Brisbane CBD is getting a bit of 50's revival with department stores expanding etc. Of course I'll be catching the train in

Kinda rainy day. I painted some wheels and fiddled a bit with the SD40-2...
Ken, I've tried bugging Walther's about sideframes for the P2K SD7/9. They don't have any. I needed some to stick on my SD7 (I used the sideframes from it on a Kato SD40). Turns out BLI's sideframes for the SD7/9 will fit the P2K, but you have to make a mount. I used 2 screws in the trucks to hold the sideframes in place. The Kato pick-up strip works better in the BLI sideframe, but the P2K one could be made to work. It's still kinda pricy, as the 4 sideframes set me back about $20.

Went to the dealer to look at a Chrysler T&C. Abouthte same numbers as when bought the Kia, but salesman came out WAY to high on the payment. I knew something wasn't right, so I called when i got home, after I played with the figures, and found out how much "interest" I thought I was going to be paying, and come to find out, on a $10999 vehicle he wanted to include a 5 yr, 100,000 warrrantee {purchase} for ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN ONLY- nothing else...for a mere $2300 extra. About 20% of the cost of the vehicle!
Now in Wednesday when we bought the dryer the saleslady sure tried hard to sell me a 1, 2, or 3 year "extended warrantee" {which every financial advisor advises against purchasing as it only pads the sellers pockets} on the dryer. I pointed out, quite astutely, that "if it doesnt last at least 5 years, it isn't worth buying". She said "very good argument".Of course it is!
I did the same when we bought the new washer at Sears 3 years ago. She wanted to sell me a 5 yr "extended warrantee" on the washer, adn I said "if it won't last 5 years, it isn't worth bying".
So back to the saleman....his excuse for including the warrantee was "I hate to send a person who makes payments off without some kind of warrantee!". Now, mind you, my KIA has been out of warrantee for 1 year and I have no warranteel left on it. SO I am in no worse a boat eihter way. I know CHrysler doesn't make any worse junk than anyone else does, and so I have faith it will last a while, It WILL have its quirks, recalls and Service Bulletins I am sure, but a dealer can fix those, often without any charges! ANything else that goes worng can happen to me now with the KIA.
So he redid the figures and came up with the new payment as about $7 over my old one, but also got another $200 on the tradein value so that will about negate the difference. I told him I wouldn't take anymore than the old payment,s o forget it, nor am I going to finance it for Umpteen years to get a "lower payment"!
So the vehicle is 2 years newer than the KIA Sedona, and has almost exactly the same mileage to the nth degree, and has what I want on it and no more. No fancy DVD players or anything. The salesman "pulled it around back as I thought I'd hear form you, but no one is to know I did that for you." He siad think on it some more and I said I would and get back to him. WIll tomorrow. The payment is already in our meager failed budget and no guarantees I'll get requalified on a loan to replace the one I got, so it mihgt not work out.
MOH is a little leary and said "If I was working, I'd say lets do it right now", but is leaving the decision up to me. Now we would have to struggle for the next 20 months with the payment anyway, so why not struggle on a replacement? Ad in 2 years I am sure MOH will find some J-O-B to work at bringing in money. OR will be in school with guaranteed job placement AFTER school wiht student living expenses on Student loan for 12 months starting in September.. So no difference really. SO..If not, we will be in deep do do with or without the payment.
The worst thing is the vehicle didn't say "take me home" right away. the Kia did, so we bought it right away.
I tell all this to see what I think writting it down.Still not sure one way or the other. What do y'all think?

Evening All,
MOH and I went out got haircuts (2 different businesses) and then went out to supper. Tomorrow I am taking my Mom and Dad out to lunch. Sunday they start vacation (going to OH).
Today I "planted" the whistle/bell signs. Here is the stupid part. Yesterday I painted the uprights black. After mounting them today I realized the back of the keystone shape should be black also. So I ended up painting them on the layout.
I shot a short video of my new passenger cars. I will post it in WPF tomorrow.

Not much goin on here today, was nice & sunny most of the day, clouded up in the late afternoon, maybe tomorrow, but hey, at least temps were in the low 50's here, and there is no sn*w in the forcast!
Got a letter from BGE (Baltimore Gas & Electric) in my email yesterday. It seems they are giving away 4 ft trees of various types with the Arbor Day Foundation , for the purpose of reducing your energy bill. They have this really cool site set up where you see the satellite view of your house. There you move 2 "targets" around to determine where you can place the trees, and how much they will affect your utility bill when they mature. Pretty cool, so I ordered 2 trees, a Willow Oak and a Linden Tree. Hey, we were going to buy trees this year, but free is better than cheap!
Galaxy. I don't know if I would ditch the Kia for a Chrysler. Its the old out of the frying pan and into the fire routine I suppose. True, if North & South Korea go to war, there would be an issue getting parts. But Chrysler is about as stable as my Mom with her walker (She's 86). 1st out government bailed them out , then Daimler-Benz tried to save them, then our Government again with "help" from Fiat. My last shop I worked at was a former Chrysler dealership who dropped Chrysler for Kia. We still had some die hard Chrysler customers, and compared to the Kia owners, they paid dearly for that "privilege" in repair costs. One thing my Dad always told me, be careful on a used car. Been working on that SD40-2 again. The rear driveshaft kept sliding in too far, so I glued it with some flexible glue so it couldn't slide into the motor any further. Works great now. I got a bit steamed when I finally dug out the handrails I bought for it (specifically for a snoot). All the mounts are on the front, not 2 on top of the anti-climber, and 2 on the sides like it should be. I'll call Athearn tomorrow after work to see if they have the right type. If they don't, I'll try to get some smokey valley ones and some chain.
Well I didn't get the old computer out the door today. Maybe tomorrow. I got most of the salvaged parts put away. A powered 4-port USB hub that's made to fit in a 3.5" bay, three EIDE hard drives (80G, 6.5G and 8G), two port USB add-on board and a two port USB add-on that plugs onto the main board USB jacks. I may be able to reuse them at some point. I put the 80G drive in an external USB drive case and have it hooked up to the computer. I've been transferring my favorites bookmarks from it to my Firefox bookmarks. I took the DVD drive apart and salvaged three small can motors.The computer case with the media center, media center harness, power supply, main board and Zip drive will be going out with the trash.Time for me to call it a night. I see we got a couple saxophoners, a pinanerer, and a trumpetooter, not to mention a tubaister here in the diner. I have to admit that as well as being a professional singist at one time in my life I also played Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, and piano back in High School. Later after college I got so I had some fun playing trombone in a few brass ensembles as well. I taught classic guitar for many years and could play a bit of electric Bass as well as a bit of jazz guitar at one time. I think we ought to get together and have a diner band.... Hmmm, well, maybe not unless Barry sits in with us. Actually i need to get out my guitar and start getting some action back in my fingers. One more thing to put on the "to Do" list I guess.
Jeffrey, looks like you have some good salvage done on the old puter. I love the Dr. Pepper tank on the second photo... Is that a permanent fixture on the layout?
I spent most of today out at my sons house sawing up the remaining small limbs in his front yard from the trees he had taken down two years ago.... Got most of it cleaned up and I have some very sore muscles at the moment. I picked him up at a car repair shop just outside Geneva and took him home in the morning (his car was getting an oil change) and then took him back over to pick it up on my way home this afternoon. We made both trips in pure EV mode on the Pip. He couldn't believe how silent it is without the gas engine running. I got home with just enough time to grab a bite to eat, print out a few papers I needed, and check out the total Kwh for the day before heading out to the Troop committee meeting tonight. Meeting was particularly long as we had to figure out exactly who was at each meeting over the last 3 months for the funding they receive from an agency (due to them being a troop for Handicapped Scouts) plus all the usual planning.
Oh, the solar array produced 28.25 Kwh of power today. My usage for the last month has been 14 Kwh per day average, so today it more than doubled my usage. So far the Electric Company will be owing me $$ this month. I love it!

Galaxy: Not good! bad enough having to replace a dryer but having it catch fire, yes a good thing you caught it! I better clean mine out when I'm off in a week or so. Ah cars... We use to be Chrysler people but with their bad transmissions and shady dealerships we cut our ties with them 7 years ago and went with Hyundai. Yes what was junk one time turned out to be a really good product. We had our 1st Sante Fe for 5 years and all we had done to it was the brake pads :O Yahh say it ain't so!!
Garry: Had to think what you were talking about regarding my 2-10-2 fleet... Ya, you're right I do have a lot of them! I just haven't been running them lately. I'm hoping with the new reconfigured track design I'll be running more trains.It's been a SLOW 5 years.
I haven't told the CFO about the latest legislation to sweep "Our" land. I may have to MESSappropriate lands from the Laundry room for staging yards...
