................The extended forecast (next couple of weeks) shows rain with periods of something called sunshine. Anyone know what that is?

We're actually getting a fair bit of it at the present time and as there is a total fire ban and the fire risk is extreme could really do with some rain. The average rainfall here for January and February is 6.9 inches , we have  had less than half an inch. Am quite sure that with the battering the Aussies have been getting lately, they wouldn't mind sharing some of the rain with us.

Gary & Jake. Planes and trains, what's not to like. Big Smile . It doesn't hurt to have a variety of interests. My favourite aeroplane to work on is the Douglas DC3.

Ulrich. Hats off to your and your good ladies  patience in what is a very trying time, I hope that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train coming the other way!

Have just finished a pencil sketch that I am going to give a young friend as a personal wedding present  this Saturday. His farther was killed in a road accident several years ago, ( to good a pilot to be killed in an aircraft)  and I have been asked to speak for his Dad and so wanted  to give him something special. It is of his Dads  first dung duster depicted  in the King Country 30 years ago. Now a days with digital cameras and cell phones with cameras in them, I think  we take for granted the amount of photos taken on various subjects,  apart from a few grainy "Instamatic" shots and some "static" photos there's not much record of back then.


Currently 2206, 57 F, high this afternoon was 77 F,  76% humidity.

This sugar-cane saddle tanker was one of many purchased by W G Irwin on behalf of Hawaiian agricultural companies. The Honolulu Plantation holdings were on Oahu near Pearl Harbor. Pu'uloa originally was named Aiea, but the name lettered on the tank was Pu'uloa. 

The railroad that began operation in 1901 (see p. 83 of the Bishop study) used the Pu'uloa as its only engine. The locomotive was kept busy as the rolling stock included 500 cane cars. Later based at the mill at 'Aiea, the Pu'uloa was sold in 1925 to the O'ahu Sugar Company, which operated in the same area of O'ahu.

Enthusiast Hal Wilmunder bought the Pu'ulao in 1964 and moved it to Camino, Calif. In 1974, the Hawaiian Railway Society bought the engine, returned it to Hawaii, where it went on display in Ewa (on O'ahu).

Morning guys

Been working on a GP7, and figured out how to do the steps GN had originally put on their GP7-20s (and later BN did to the GPs of the Q, SP&S, and NP).

Some modifications to the inside of the step well were needed to support the inboard bracket. The pilot had to be modified to support the other bracket. The modifcations were done with scrap pieces of styrene. 2 pieces of .03 square rod glued together make up the pilot piece, and 2 scrap pieces of .02 sheet were glued back to back to makethe inboard supports for the brackets. Later release P2K geeps will need pilot modifications.

1 down, 3 more for this GP7. Then comes the other 14 or so locos and at about 5 bucks a loco for etched steps (and I screwed some up), this could get pricy....

Last night I got a dremel from a club member for $50. Brand new, but I realized after I agreed to buy it that it's the battery version. Oops....

You know, they say the average human walks about 900 miles a year and they consume about 22 gallons of beer… a year. Now I’m not sure how this equates for those who do not drink beer, but statistically, we get about 41 miles per gallon which I don’t think is all that bad considering.

Welp, didn’t get no 3 or 4 inches…..maaaybe two. Pretty much streets clear  and it’s misting snow right now. Glad I didn’t go to the trouble of getting the snowblower out. Todays forecast reads as follows; Occasional snow showers. High near 35.  Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Ken- Sounds to me like ole Tyler is in a bit over his head. Stressing out as they say.

Ulrich- I hope this w**ks for you and for your Parents. It will be easier and less expensive to get there too. I hope this place is nicer, some can appear nice until you are there. Either way, you have no choice. It has to be this way. I know what you mean about no time for the hobby. Many say just relax and spend some time in a hobby. Well that's easier said than done. Just doesn’t happen when you are “it”. Luckily this forum helped with keeping me into the hobby. Just that bit in the morning where I could take just a few minutes and get away from all the hubbub. It’s also helping me get back down there to Toddland (where I am king) from time to time. If it weren’t for this place, I probably would have just said "forget it (like so many other things I want to do) let’s face it I’ve no time". I still have things that keep me from w**king on the layout and also, I admit, just shear habit not to. If that makes any sense.

I need to better manage my time I suppose. I do have most everything done now that I’ve had to put off for those last years with Mom, but I do have some inside projects left that I haven’t started. I need to do these things like a job. W**k on them from like 8 to 5, then relax of an evening with choo choo time ever so often. Brilliant!! Yes, that’s what I’ll do from now on!

Yah, right. Anyway, time for a shower then Ziva.

Good morning. It's 41° with 94% humidity. Mostly cloudy now clearing to partly cloudy later. The high will be 65°.


Today I'm working on the FP7's. The work is easy but a bit time consuming. I'm cutting factory coupler mount off the rear of the shell and removing a predetermined amount of plastic along with it. I'm then mounting a Kadee #242 draft gear box with a #148 coupler in that location. I've already done two this morning. That leaves two more yet to be done. Below are before and after photos from the same loco. The top one is before the conversion, the bottom one obviously is after.





The only tricky part is cutting the right amount off the Kadee coupler box so it clears the rear truck. A self tapping screw is then used to hold the box and coupler in place. And yes, I know Kadee calls for a #34 coupler for the rear of the Atlas/Roco FP7 but doesn't tell you how to get rid of the flop. I'm putting a center shank coupler at the proper height and doing away with the flop.

The only other plans for today are to clean up the layout a bit more.

Good Afternoon Gang!

I am feeling quite miserable - fighting a headache. The move of my parents has been arranged - on March 7th, we will go up north, pack up their gear, wait for the special taxi to take them down south. It´s a 100 mile trip, certainly not going to be that comfortable for them, as my Dad has to be transported in his wheelchair. There is no way he could get in and out of a normal car. We will drive up north tomorrow to pack up a few things from their house and take it back to our place, just to have it handy when my parents move. Lots of administrative work ahead of us, but that´s quite OK. My parents prove to be a big PITA the last two days. They ring us up a minimum of ten times a day. I am fine helping them, but I am not their babysitter - period. Starting to get mad at them...

OK RAY- Today I did my grocery shopping and will spenfd the afternoon doing laundry!!! Did the pharmacy yesterday. should/could do some banking but not urgent! Today i get my check {4th wednesday of the month and so i can pay some bills. Will do one tomorrow and visit the parental unit.too.

MOH has to go relieve the FIL so FIL can take their cat to the vet. Our cat needs his shots again, needs to be shaved {long hair getting in knots, and he WON'T let you comb them out anymore either} but won't let you touch, pickup or hold him -at 15 he is a cranky old codger!!!

Maybe while laundry is going I can get the table top trains put away,,,,they need a good dusting first.Then MOH will have no complaints about them! I need to get that done as MOH { who DOES have respect for trains} tends to use the table top layout as a catch-all for everything!

We have been perusing SAvannah Georgia as a possbile place to retire to..Hawaii is where we'd LIKE to go,but need the $$$ to do that. Savannah appears cheaper, of course it could disappear into the water if the oceans rise!!! We don't like FLorida and it is too overcrowded there anyway. My parents have a property in florida I may inherit it too, but we don't like the area. It is a rental unit investment to them. Savannah seems nice enough. Dunno, maybe check out Atlanta too, it won't sink! Instead of buying a property here, we may just {when we are able to} buy down there instead,rent out until the parents pass, then move there.  prices not bad right now, either.

Well, off to take a nap and rest my achin' back!

OH< if I disappear for awhile it is because AOL says we we money...that the billing method is no longer valid, so we may lose AOL for awhile, and I hate accessing through other methods!

The coupler conversions on all the FP7's are done. The front and rear couplers (all center shank Kadee's) are spot-on with the Kadee coupler height gauge. Now I can relax for a while.

Mornin'.....  Ah....  hmmmm. Appears to be afternoon already, and since I already had my old Phart cereal a few hours back, I guess another refill of the dark roast Kona coffee would suit me for the moment, Zoe.

Gary, I don't know about germs, but viruses sure can.....

i was just getting ready to check out the forum when the phone rang this morning.  My son wanted me to watch granddaughter #2 while he ran some errands in Geneva.  I never mind playing with the granddaughters, so i told him to bring her over.  Then i got to looking at the foot and a half pile of snow at the end of the driveway and figured i might better start the gas burner and blow the heavy wet stuff out of the way.  Amazingly the old girl fired up on the 5th. or 6th. pull (usually have to pull the spark plug and hit it with starting fluid) and I cleaned off the pile on the deck most of which was from stuff that slid off the metal roof and the solar panels.  I used to have a long ramp for moving sound equipment from the spare bedroom in the house out to the trailer when needed.  That got recycled last summer, so I have been using the much shorter ramps left from when i sold the trailer to be able to get the snowblower on and off the deck.  I should have been smarter tghis morning and as I went down the ramp I slipped on the ice and landed rather hard on my rear end.  Lucky nothing appears to be broken, but I will have some very sore muscles for a while.  Major backache at the moment!  Did get the driveway cleared right before my son arrived.  Spent a few more minutes pulling the white stuff off the solar panels so they could get back to w*rk.

I have several projects needing to get done today, and unfortunately most do not include playing with trains...

Ok, I'm having a heck of a time removing soldering flux from my rails where I soldered joints, feeders etc. Can't seem to get the stick stuff off. What should I be using oh ye persons with all powerful knowledge?

And it needs to go away why? You should be able to rub it off of the top and inside of the running rail with a cloth. Will paint stick to it? No, probably not, but then to you really want a uniform paint job? Rails need to look like they belong on a railroad, warts, stains and all.

A problem to electrical pick up can be addressed if not by a cloth then by a pumice stone or track cleaner of that sort of ilk.

Or you can just run trains with 48 wheel power pick up. Laugh

If you have solder stuck to the top of the rail just heat it and wipe it off with a cloth as Lion said. Don't fret much about a thin layer staying on. I have that in a couple of places on my layout and they don't bother the trains any. It just sounds like they're running over a crossing.

No, solder stuck to the rail head isn't the problem. It's the sticky residue left over from the flux. I'll see what 90% alcohol does.

Took the dogs to the vet, no issues with them. Except for the bill... $137 bucks, but my folks are going to pay me back.

Train vs. Car dilema: My father found a set of TFS head on sale for $745 shipped, only needs 3 rocker arms. The numbers put them on par with my father's modfied edelbrocks, and they haven't been ported. The downside is they are iron. I'm debating wheter to get those or some more train cars. My engine with explorer heads is already going to be around 320-350 rwhp and 380-410 torque. Those TFS heads could add anywhere from 30 to 70 horses...

Ken, Got the kato motor installed in the P1K F3 that had a bum motor. Found one issue though, the kato motor is slightly longer than the P1K's original. So with the end plates for the motor, it fits snug. Which is good cause I'm out of foam tape and can't find the other rubber mount. I tested it with a 9 volt and it runs pretty good off of it.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
