***Johnboy, I can use an albuterol inhaler without interfering with the MP which is the treatment for sarcoidosis I am on. Steroidal inhalers and even the new "wonder" asthma drugs I need to avoid. Still have not gone to the albuterol yet, but at least I have it just incase.
Been thinking a lot about the future HO layout expansion. That's about it, just "thinking a lot". Will need to get better health-wise to really get much work done on it. Wonder how long a wait there will actually be for pre-ordered BLI, Walthers and MTH locos?

There will be a new Elevated train route from Kualakai Parkway trhough Pearl City and the Airport to downtown Honolulu!!! It is Called "The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART)"
How will people use rail transit?
Rail transit will be used to commute to and from work, and school; to go to shopping malls, the airport, and entertainment venues such as Aloha Stadium.
The train hours of operation will be from 4:00 AM-12:00 AM. During peak travel times in the morning and afternoon, trains will arrive every three minutes and every six minutes during off-peak time. At low travel times, trains will come every 10 minutes.
The route is 20 miles from East Kapolei with 21 stations and connects with the Honolulu International Airport and downtown Honolulu and ends at Ala Moana Center. HERE:

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
Got the appointment and the needle sticking done. Had to get my vitamin D level checked. I've been on Vitamin D gel caps for about two months so hopefully it's up to a good level. When they checked before it was at 13 which is seriously deficient, supposed to be around 50-100.

I have returned from the Dentist... One less hole in my head I guess. He works quickly and painlessly and has a great sense of humor. He is also an Eagle Scout and the Committee Chair for my old Troop. Next appointment for another filling and a crown (adjacent teeth) is in two weeks.
The HVAC guy was here a while ago as well. He called to let me know he has a couple emergencies and would be at my house in about 20 minutes. A half hour latter he wasn't here. I waited a few minutes more and his truck pulls in the driveway. He gets out and is followed by a wizened old guy that looked to be in his 80's... They grab a box of tools and come in the house. He was late because he decided to go and bring his dad with him as he knows furnaces the vintage of mine much better than he does and was hoping he might have an idea how to get it up and working! I told them both I thought the furnace is now beyond repair, but I would like him to check and make sure nothing is going to cause any more problems. He, his dad, and I proceed down cellar. He kneels down and takes one look at the wiring, his eyes got very wide and he say's, "OH MY GOD!" He can't unhook the gas from the old furnace as shutting it off will cut the gas from the other two units. He did remove the thermocouple to prevent it from somehow trying to fire anything.
He told me he contacted his supplier and was told I would be better off with a 60,000 BTU model rather than the 40,000 BTU. I asked what the difference in cost would be expecting a bait and switch routine. He says not that much more, no problem, the quote I gave you is still good. He also is a rare type that will still do business with a smile and a handshake. The new furnace will be ordered this afternoon, I should have a contract to sign by tomorrow and since he will on vacation for a week the unit will be installed the first week of March. He even offered to loan me a couple portable electric heaters. I thanked him but told him I have two usable electric heaters of my own. One more reason I like doing business with smaller local businesses!
Currently 39°F outside, the only heat is coming from my wood stove (which is almost shut down) and it is 73°F in the other end of the house from the wood stove.... I think I should survive just fine 'till the first week of March.
OK, now I can go do some modeling stuff!

Ray we had our furnace and ac replaced last year. We really notice a difference in cost saving's with the gas and Hydro.
Well it was a good day today at work, I actually really enjoy it there. My supervisor told me I did a good job so that's a good. The day flew by too so I hope there all like that. I do enjoy being home by 3:45 too.
Back from Williamsport, things are looking good with Penn Tech.
Placement test results are in. Tested at Level 4, which basically means that I am at college level math. However, because I didn't test at Level 7 (which is Calculus), and I'm looking to go into Civil Engineering, I'll need to take some courses before starting the Calculus course. It's not a bad thing since where I tested is where most people test, about 70%. Only a few people test at Level 7 (about 10%).
Under normal situations, this would mean that I would have to push the classes back by a year unless I take summer courses, but because of how the Civil Engineering course is set up, that won't be a problem. Lots of room in the eighth semester, and two open slots during the third and fourth semesters.

VA Hospital Visit Well, I am 99.9% sure Sue won't want to go again. My normal waiting time is 10 to 15 minutes after check in, lot of times much faster! Today, waited 1 and a half hours to be seen. I knew it was going to be a long wait when I over heard my Foot Ulcer PA fighting with the Nurse in charge of the ward!
Well it seems I was right, the PA was very pleased with the way the toe is healing! In fact, she is so pleased she wants to do a skin graft in the next 2 to 3 weeks! That way the wound will be completely closed!
I asked her "how soon after the graft can I go back to work"? Answer was "3 to 4 weeks"! I am at a little lost what to do at this point? I will say I would be happy to be away from the job for a month, give me some time to look for another job. Plus I will get some paid time off with being there for 70 weeks now. But then again, it won't be as much as I am making now either. Then there is the whole BoS thing that is going on as well!

I clean the tank and change the water weekly. Goldfish can be very messy and so the filters need constant cleaning. I belong to aquarium forum and they also say to do what Im doing and it makes for a nice looking aquarium. There is alot of waste that comes from goldfish. I don't know what fish you have? but mine are messy little things. It shouldn't get under your skin though as its my tank to clean.

as you can see in the article also they recommend 25-50% per water change weekly depending on water tests. When my nitrates start climbing its time for a change. My Local fish store also says the same. You cant argue with the tests right? How often do you clean your tanks? my water is crystal clear with nitrates at 15ppm and nitrites at 0

well after I saw that I was working 9 days straight and the response from one of my managers the other day(the way the response was said, it was said like one would be talking to a child) really pushed my buttons, and any steam I had for both work and class disappeared. I can't even get myself to set the track up and run some trains, I've hit a wall.

They’re calling for anywhere from 3 to 5 (some people say they heard 8) inches of sn*w tomorrow, I guess I should go see if the sn*w blower runs, but it’s cold out there and it is a Deere so, I’ll wait until I need it. If it doesn’t oh well, it (the sn*w) will be gone by Saturday, Sunday. Supposed to be about 50°. No wonder everyone’s sick.

Good morning. It's 43° with 69% humidity. The high will be 58°.I really have to do some cleanup on the layout today. The clutter is taking over! There's stuff that has to be put away and other stuff that has to be put out as trash. Other than that I have no particular plans for today.

Ray: The scenery is looking awesome on the module! Glad you're making some progress w/ that old furnace. What are those other gas units tied into the gas manifold? Good thing some "aged" experienced input for the investment. Always better to be somewhat overfired (BTU wise). I've been using some backup elec heaters myself, as I'm really never here and that "Oil Monster" is killing me. Those oil filled elec radiators are safe and efficient.
Jake: Calculus was always a bummer for me, and I was very good w/ math back in those medevial times. As long as you have the mind set for engineering, it will come more easily than you think. I still employ much of my geometry/ trig on a regular basis and that's for carpentry and design. It's not so much as education as a way of thinking. good luck in placement.
Ken: I see there's still much going on. Happy to hear your foot is making progress. A couple club members had quite the ordeal w/ a toe/ foot infection (diabetic related) and took close to 6 mo for proper healing. One thru the VA and the other a specialist in Boston. VA may be a PITA but got the same care in the end. I see your frustration though! Having luck w/ those MRC Fs, one I tried just wouldn't run worth a damm w/ any of my others.
Jeremy: Yes, goldfish are rather messy in the tank, ask the fish store what plants and/ or (calcium) shells etc that may be added to help not having to clean/ change the water so much. A couple catfish used to help w/ mine also. Might be able to keep the nitrates in check a bit longer. Just a thought
Jeff: I too ended up w/ red tailed black sharks as well as tri-color. Beautiful fish. They loved the bottom, tetras, gorami and others enjoyed the rest of the "community".Raised Bettas in other divided 10 gallon. Fun hobby, seems a lot of "train" folks also have fish. Nice weathering on that 40' box
Garry: You always have kind words, love following that layout progress especially pics on WPF, Waiting to see how the city progresses. Remember when you were just starting the basic scenery. It's come a long way and looks fantastic. Prayers for your niece's friend.

So was hoping to get back in the swing of things after that rather "grueling" W**K adventure in Hollywood, FL.. Just feeling real "lazy" and need the rest. Need a vacation from that w**k vacation. Was somewhat rewarding, though, but I'm getting too old for that crap.(a few mo short of turning 60) 20 straight 9-10 hour days and only saw the beach/ boardwalk @ night a couple times (and 2 min away). Was under the gun w/ a deadline and many Xtras thrown in to boot! All the tools needed there were pulled from 2 W**k trucks and packed in my Caravan. Now it has to be sorted out and placed back. Just looking @ piles of tool boxes and real messy trucks. Ahh, maybe "tomorrow" hoped to maybe bring back some of that 70/80 degree weather back w/ me and make the job easier. Ya sure.. still have ugly piles of snow from that 'noreaster I missed w/ 30" of snow in Boston. and more on the way this weekend.

Todd, yes I have to think someone is looking over me up there.... Have had too many close calls with the old furnace. Garry, I will be limited in hobby money for quite a long time with all the "improvements" around here. I'm sure I will still find a few $$$ to spend though. I'll have to get a photo of the damage done to the furnace today.
I have the contract for the new furnace sitting in my email this morning. need to get back to them and see what they want/require for a down payment, print and sign the contract, and then get it back to them.
Bob, when I had the gas heater put in the living room (was originally a side porch) and the heater put in the layout room, they teed the line past the shut off for the furnace.... Was the quickest and easiest way to do it I guess. I will say that when the HVAC guy walked through the layout room he looked at the heater there and and said, "Empire! Good unit, top shelf!"
The Empire heater in the living room did amazingly well over night as in the dining room was 66°F this morning and the outside temp was down in the low 20's. Wood stove was probably all but out by 4 AM. I did find some live coals and it very quickly came back up this morning. We'll see how it does tonight when it gets down to 16° overnight. Worst case scenario, I get up and stoke the wood stove!
Have the new scenery glued in place on the layout, and have started to put down the "forest floor" material. Should have some hours to spend down there today after i go shopping and possibly take the new mic down to church and test it out.

Been working on trains, installing a wiring harness into a P2K GP20.
Ken, I doubt I could get them to you by your birthday .I don't have a decoder to test the GP20 to see if the lights work right. On DC with an athearn dummy plug the headlight comes on in reverse, and the rear light doesn't light up. I wish I had a spare decoder to use to test the lights out. I may have mixed the motor leads, but that's fixable with some DCC programing. Maybe later today (I'm frustrated that I can't get one of the wires to stay attached to the frame) I'll pull a decoder out of one of my other locos and try it.

Wow, this new guy is a terrific worker. Hands down the best one I have had yet. At the rate he works, I could run out of jobs for him in a week or so.

Todd, oh your royal highness of Toddland, of which you are king, Did you watch the 1st of the 3 videos?
Video 1 was about the traffic congestion on H1, H2, H3 the "interstate highways" in Honolulu, Oahu.

Watch Video 1 again! When we were last in Hawaii, it was the last of Jan, first of Feb week/ weekend. The traffic wasn't't as bad as it could have been, nor as bad as peak tourist season, and the Hawaiian people are willing to let you in and out of traffic, but the congestion is getting to be paramount to that of Los Angeles!!!! It can take an hour to move 2 miles! The smaller tributary highways/roads {4 laners} can be as bad. the 'interstates" OBVIOUSLY can NOT be true "interstates" as they connect to no other state!. They are called that as we understand it because they were built to the high Interstate Standards.
There are elevated highways over the older "highway" routes. They are, frankly running out of land to do such things.
So the solution to easing the traffic burden is to build the train route. SO it is a matter of HAVE TO, not WANT TO, REGARDLESS OF COST. Video 3 talks about how it will get paid for. {or is it in the supplemental videos?}. Video 3 only doesn't tell how much the combined bus {called "THE BUS"} and train pass will cost. Probably because it hasn't been set forth based on costs yet.
What really really surprised me was that the Waikiki extension wasn't in the original plans and Will be an add on later. It would also seem to me to be beneficial to extend beyond the proposed Waikiki extension and include the lower half of Waikiki/Honolulu. But first they have to build what they have proposed!!! When we stayed in Waikiki, we were smack dab in the center,and the train seems to end about there. It seems it should cover more ground, but maybe I am not remembering something correctly. I'd have to let you know NEXT TIME we go, LOL!!!
It really is no different than any other city experiencing a boom in peoples who all want to use the same thing at the same time!!!

HMMM- Unenjoyment, One payment was deposited the 11th, another the 14th, and none the 19 {would have been the 18th but holiday}. HMM maybe tomorrow it will be there? if not we have to Call someone and scream?! So it should be deposited on THursdays, not mondays???? and the first one was out of sync?
Today was free bread day, not much to get. I took down the bagies I got for the bagels and donuts. They come "en masse" in a big bags and need to be sorted to smaller bags I took for convenience. Adn it helps to give back for that which we are given. I also take the old plastic containers washed and sterilized to be reused.
Moh went to a job fair today. If nto hear by Friday,assume they weren't interested. Tomorrow has an appointment with the emplyment agency to help. We will see what help they are! I constructed a form for MOH to record all jobs applied for , but MOH isn't using it. it will catch up to MOh when MOH is asked to present such a sheet for unenjoyment to PROVE MOH has been applying and is "ready will adn able to work". We shall see.

Just a quick hello to all of you.
I am still at my parents´ place. Fortunately there has been a change of direction. Both now agree to move into a retirement home, where the necessary care can be given to them. I will make the move on coming Monday. It´s a big relief for me now.
I am exhausted, not able to read through all the posts. Will do that later. Thanks for bearing with me!

Ulrich, I do hope they do not change their minds again!!! Once they get into the retirement home they will likely find there is a lot for them to do and enjoy. Most places have good programs for the elderly... At least on this side of the pond. You are my constant thoughts for this to be resolved in their (and your) best interests!
Signed the contract for the new furnace and stuck in the mail early this afternoon. So far the house is nice and toasty as the wood stove is providing all the needed heat at the moment. 73° in the dining room/office at the moment. Here are a couple of photos of the old furnace and what happened. The burner would vibrate off the gas orifice from time to time, something like this:
Most times it would just flick a bit of gas out into the basement which would end up being sucked into the system and I would smell a very faint odor of gas. Go down stairs put the burner back in place, and no more problems for another few weeks. The last time it flashed back and flared out from the burner and did this to the wiring right above the orifice. Three of the wires have the insulation destroyed on them. When I went downstairs the gas pipe you see under the wires was also very hot! Not a good thing...
Today has been mostly cloudy outside. Also very windy and cold! Good day to sit and enjoy the wood fire!

Just spent big bucks on my truck. The pressurized line from the gas tank (?) developed a pin hole leak. After driving it Sunday to w**k I smelled then found the truck dripping gas. That night I used 1/4 tank of gas to go around 15 miles. The mechanic said that was the reason I was having to crank it to get it to start, because I had to re prime the line.
Today I put ground cover on 2/3 of the mine and hill. That needs to dry before I can do the last part so I should finish that tomorrow and tentatively put everything together on the layout on Friday. A friend at the club (works for local RR) gave me a container of coal that he picked up of the right of way where he was working, so I have to use some of it on the layout.
Ken- Glad your foot is doing much better. Did my suggestions on the QSI decoder help you?
Garry- Saying prayers for your niece's friends family.
Ray- Your progress on your layout is looking good.
Rob- Glad you found a great worker.
Ulrich- I am hoping that you are able to get your parents in the nursing home. I am sure that this will be a relief for you and Petra that they will be looked after.

The Case of the Unwanted Window
Evening all, certainly has been quiet around the Diner today! Flo, I'll have a glass of Canada Dry Ginger Ale please... What's that... you don't have Canada Dry? Oh right, forgot we are in the US of A. Ok, any ginger ale will do
Anyway, as some will recall, I had a large 6 ft by 3 ft high window in my layout room. It was also a phenomena hole as it conducted a lot of ccoollllldddd into the room. It had to go and the following is how I did it.
The window before I started the project. Note that directly below the window are two levels of track work. The lower one is a 5 track staging yard and the upper one is where the town of Crystal Valley will be located.
Step one was to glue spacers to the existing window in order to get out from some obstructions like the alarm dohickey. I used dap clear caulking for glue because I want to be able to pull all this out should we move down the road.
I used chloroplast cut to the size of the window opening. Once again I used the same caulking to glue the chloroplast to the spacers previously installed. While the caulking dried, I used tacks to hold the sheet in place.
Next, I ran some old scrap mdf baseboard around the inside of the opening setting it back the thickness of the Masonite I had on hand. The mdf was glued in place as before.
Next step was to install 6 inch fibreglass insulation in the opening. Good bye cold Notice that I tucked the insulation behind the mdf..
I glued the pre cut Masonite into place and put in a few drywall screws to keep it there till the calking dried.
A little joint filler to fill in any spots that weren't a perfect match took care of that problem. The Masonite was pre painted by the way.
After a touch up of matching paint, the finished product
